Landslide Buries 20 Children at Malaysian Orphanage

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A landslide buried 20 children and four adults at a Malaysian orphanage Saturday where scores of rescuers were digging by their hands in soil softened by the rains to find the missing, police said.

The bodies of five children, ages 8 to 17, have been recovered. Six children and a 30-year-old warden who were critically injured were pulled from the mud and rushed to a hospital, district police chief Abdul Rashid Wahab said.

Heavy rain had likely caused the landslide that hit the orphanage for ethnic Malay Muslim boys in a rural village in central Selangor state, he said. Rain was still falling in the evening and hampering rescue work by some 200 firefighters, police and others.

“They just had lunch at the tent by the side of the house when two landslides apparently occurred at the same time. The tent collapsed, burying 24 people as they did not have time to escape,” he told The Associated Press.

“Rescuers have to dig using their hands and other equipment because the soil surrounding is very soft due to the rain,” he said, adding the search would continue for another nine children and three orphanage staff.

A small stream runs nearby the orphanage, a huge three-story house at a foothill in a sleepy village in Selangor. The house wasn’t damaged but was partly covered in sludge. Several tall trees fell along with the landslide.

Several houses near the orphanage have been told to evacuate amid concerns of further landslides, Abdul Rashid said.

Mohamad Hambali Ismail, a warden at the orphanage, told local media that the children were preparing to receive visitors when the earth shook.

“I heard a loud noise. Suddenly the earth was chasing me. I had to run to save myself,” Hambali, 34, told the Malay-language Berita Harian newspaper.

The ones that were ‘rushed to the hospital’ are the ones I fear most for as my experience with Indonesian hospitals are if you need them–don’t go, have your own supplies when traveling to these countries! Guide books tell you the same thing.

May God lay healing hands on these victims for a full recovery!

May these people see the grace of God and acknowledge his being. People too often only see the hammer. We’re going to need wisdom to see past the hammer of God and see the hand of God at work.

Perhaps an American adoption agency could look into helping Americans adopt some of the children

While I am sorry for these children and pray for their quick recovery, we have thousands of orphans in our country that need to be adopted first.

I don’t think the world is ending today.
But this news is certainly going to make a lot of people nervous.
I guess the predictor’s radio station must be getting flooded with calls.

G*D help us…well, I guess that is the best prayer of which to start…

My prayers with those children and their rescuers. It’s very sad.

Hmmm. I was thinking the same…I don’t think a rapture will be taking place today however. But I do think there are going to be a lot of mislead people waking up tomorrow morning to realize that they’ve spent their life savings for naught…my heart goes out to those poor people. A lot of them are elderly folk.

G*D be with the orphans and Mayalasia.
      G*D be with us all.

My post did not say I wasn’t concerned for the children …of course I am. I was only making a comment about the church. Only a liberal would project such an ad hominem attack?

I have to agree. A family was left homeless the other week when their apartment went up, no one was injured thank god indded, yet it was a sad sight as people rushed to help find them temp shelter and such until some permanent arrangments could be made.

Keep the faith, OLD GLORY, we have walked in your shoes. Heaven will have more angels and hopefully all who survive will recover.
SNOW, hope your allergies are improving. Really been a tough spring, although I have had a vast array of birds on the feeder lately. Pollen doesn’t seem to bother them.
