Lap of Luxury in Outer Space? Russians Plan Galactic Hotel by 2016

Looking for the mother of all extreme vacations? Look no further. In just five years, you could be riding high — literally — in a space hotel.

Company Building Commercial Space Station as Hotel

According to the Daily Mail, this hotel being created by the Russian company Orbital Technologies, formally called the Commercial Space Station, will orbit 217 miles above Earth and hold up to seven guests in four cabins. Orbital Technology reported the station would be complete by 2016.

In the weightlessness of space, visitors can choose to have beds that are either vertical or horizontal, while showers will be sealed affairs to stop water going where it shouldn’t (those aboard the International Space Station must make do with sponge baths until they return home).

Tourists, who will be accompanied by experienced crew, will dine on food prepared on Earth and sent up on the rocket, to be reheated in microwave ovens.

The plan is to do away with the freeze-dried tubes of nourishment given to astronauts and replace them with delicacies such as braised veal cheeks with wild mushrooms, white bean puree, potato soup and plum compote.

The Daily Mail reports Sergei Kostenko, chief executive of Orbital Technologies, as saying  that “the hotel will be aimed at wealthy individuals and people working for private companies who want to do research in space.”

At £100,000 ($165,513.59) for five days plus £500,000 ($827,567.94) for the flight up, it will be costly. For nearly $1 million, this could be you:

But the hotel is not just those looking for peace and quiet in the luxury of space; it may be used for astronauts needing to get off the International Space Station in the event of an emergency.

Actually, I believe they stand a better chance than U.S., IF we don’t change course. Russia and China are developing “tech” at a dizzying pace compared to us.

Yeah right, the the Russians and still using those antique gumball machine soyez capsules to get into space, their Mir space station was like a ghetto shanty in space and their progress supply ships have a nasty habit of crashing into things…. and they think they could have a luxury space station up by 2016, they couldn’t deliver their section of the NASA space station (yes, I call it the NASA space station, not the ISS since the US and NASA paid for almost all of it and it was brought up almost completely by NASA, so without NASA it wouldn’t exist, so it is the NASA space station)

I suggest everyone from now on refer to it as the NASA Space Station.

So we‘re supposed to believe that the country whose tanks got stuck in swamps in WW II because they didn’t have proper maps, and uses archaic 60′s style rockets to reach space has the capacity to do this? Only if Obama gives them the technology like Bill did with China.

Hum…… The Russian’s will send tourist up in space for about one million dollars, but they are reputedly going to charge American fifty million for American astronauts go to the space station. Such a deal.

The Russians are financing this venture with the millions that the Americans are providing them now to shuttle our astronauts back and forth from the space station. Only the moronic Americans would make a decision to scuttle the shuttle. See, it is really smoke and mirrors. We did not save any money by shutting down the shuttle program, we now just divert that perceived savings to Russia.

The bathrooms will all be out the back door. This Hotel will be just like the rustheap Russian Naval ships and submarines littering the harbors. And without an AMERICAN example to copy , how are they going to design it??

      Ha!
I wonder if it will be the “International” hotel, for use free by every nation?
You know, like we (stupidly) did with the ISS.

It looks like a jail cell to me. I‘m just fine here on tera ferma in Tennessee and if I want to be cramped up with my family on vacation we’ll just go camping in our travel trailer. At least I can go outside and fish or ride my bike. I’m all for the rich being shot into space and put in a intergalactic jail cell for proffit.

If it is truly commercial, then I‘m okay with it even it the clients pay full price to the gov’t.

I would love to go. I can’t afford it, but I would put it on my list of places to go and see: Aztec and Mayan temples and ruins; the great wall of China; Agra; Kilimanjaro–not to climb; the Namib desert; Gilbraltar; Havana; Tienimen Square; Moscow; Versailles–the one in France….
