Largest Ever U.S. Israel Military Drill Postponed Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

The largest joint defense drill ever between the U.S. and Israel has been postponed.

Israel state radio – Reshet Bet [Hebrew link] – first reported on Sunday that the drill would be delayed due to “budgetary constraints.” However, IDF Radio later in the day quoted military officials saying the motivation was to prevent “unnecessary headlines.”

Reshet Bet’s military affairs correspondent Carmela Menasheh said that Israeli defense officials spoke with their American counterparts last month at which time the decision on the delay was made.

On Sunday night, Ynet reported:

Israeli officials said the Americans asked to delay the drill so as not to heighten tensions with Iran over its nuclear program and avoid drawing any additional attention from the Arab countries during such a turbulent period. Security establishment officials said the decision was also related, in part, to budgetary concerns.

An Israeli Ministry of Defense spokesman tells The Blaze, “No final decision on the matter has been made. It’s still being discussed with the Americans.” The IDF would not comment. The U.S. European Command Sunday provided information on the new timing:

“We are going to be conducting the exercise in the second half of 2012,” explained Capt. John Ross, spokesman for the US European Command (EUCOM). “It is not unusual for such exercises to be postponed and leaders of both sides believe that the best participation of all units will be best achieved later in the year.”

The delay comes as a surprise particularly because as late as last Sunday, the IDF was still distributing a written statement describing the joint drill as “another milestone in the strategic relationship between the US and Israel, as well as a step forward in promoting regional stability.”

Though the IDF said the planned exercise was “not in response to any real-world event,” it was widely regarded as one of several actions sending a tough signal to Iran, including increased sanctions, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s explicit definition of two red lines – an Iranian closing of the Strait of Hormuz and the development of a nuclear weapon – sending another aircraft carrier strike group to the Arabian Sea, and the British deployment to the Persian Gulf of its largest warship the HMS Daring.

The joint drill, called “Austere Challenge 12” was expected to involve thousands of American and Israeli military personnel, testing a variety of air defense systems and drilling the response to incoming missiles.

Arutz 7 writes:

The sudden postponement of the “Austere Challenge,” ballyhooed by observers as a saber-rattling message to Iran, official[ly] was attributed to budgetary and logistical problems. However, considering Israel’s anxiety over Iran’s progress towards manufacturing a nuclear weapon, it is difficult to believe that money is a problem.

According to Israeli media reports, the joint exercise was originally expected to occur in the spring. The Jerusalem Post on Sunday reported that the two sides were discussing a two to three month delay to the exercise or might altogether cancel the exercise that was expected to last a week. It then updated its story to include EUCOM’s anticipated timing for the drill.  It wrote:

Talks about postponing the drill took the Americans, as well as the Israeli Air Defense division, responsible for missile defense, by surprise. Just last Thursday, top IAF officers had said that the drill was scheduled for this spring.

This year’s drill was expected to be unique in its size and scope and also mark the first time that commander of the US European Command, Adm. James Stavridis, would participate in the simulations. In the event of war, the EUCOM commander will be responsible for approving Israeli requests to deploy US missile defense systems in Israel.

The planned drill had caused tension in the region amid concern that Israel is planning an attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities in the near future, and therefore is bolstering its defenses together with the US.

It is possible that talks about postponing the drill can also be contributed to increased American concern that an Israeli strike is being planned.

Arutz 7 suggested that the extra time would allow more opportunity for sanctions to work, hopefully precluding the need for military action.

To be honest I had no idea this was their next to their final step to label whoever disagrees with this totalitarian govt will lose his/her God given rights. I found out who sponsored this and it was Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Charles Dent (R-PA).

      BADDOGGY.. AMEN brother! You see, the wording is VERY important. Hostilities towards the US GOVERNMENT! NOT just someone blowing up something somewhere. That is bad enough but that’s not directed at the GOVERNMENT. Start a protest on something the government is doing and that is considered ‘hostile.’

      I have never believed in aliens at Roswell..and as far as Kennedy being shot by Oswald..I don’t know who shot Oswald..but a sniper for the FBI and CIA told me personally that it was an inside job..just because you believe that all conspiracies are theories…doesn’t make it so..The world is not as cut and dried as you supposedly think. Every paranoid idiot is the only one , or one of a few, who knows the “truth” and the rest of us are “sheeple” and just don’t get it. It’s really the perfect argument, the conspiracy theory.       People wake up do you not see what is going on here? We now have legislation being advanced and written by the senate dim’s that has not gone thru the committee process for review. What that means is that we do not have a clue what’s hidden in the bill that may effect our freedoms! The leaders are complicit in this or they would not allow it to happen and would not receive a bill that did not originate in the house as proscribed in the constitution! They are getting around the rule by voting on a duplicate bill that cannot be changed or amended in any way. This is how we are getting screwed on every bill since the 2010 election. This current bill is not even going to be discussed much less debated and put on the internet “WHY IS THAT“? They are hiding their agenda items that they need in order to change our society into a socialist one! This is all happening right out in the open without any news agency pointing it out. Sense the last election not one major bill that passed in the house has been allowed a vote in the senate, as prescribed by the constitution. As a side note in the real world of how the constitution was set up to work The senate is a deliberate body that votes a bill up or down only after the house sends it over for their approval!       Do you think laws with that language, a lawyer could not use against YOU. If you speak out against what the Government feels is right, and want to stop that route, and you grab attention of others who start to lean in your direction…..even though you have no intentions on doing anything extreme…You are saying it is impossible….not even likely that the Government would use that against you?

It’s about the subtle erosion of American Liberty that YOU should be concerned with.       Opinion: Thank you for bring up the Enemy Expatriation Act (H.R. 3166; S. 1698) to public attention, but all major media has not, for discussion debate which per a simple search on the Senate’s website show it been since October.       Both are truths. One truth is that we are placing our military into another War footing front directly with the devil himself in Iran, the other truth is at home with NDAA and the repat act being considered. I think they who made these acts have good intentions but thats not how they always end up. Good intentions in the Mideast is to bring peace and stability but we’ve seen nothing but more escalations of War, at home…we see nothing but more unrest among the people which I believe this year will lead to a head. We are in a calm before a great storm coming on the horizon. Those who have eyes to see and ears to hear with can interpret these signs of the times we are now in. A third world war is underway. Just as we spent time stockpiling war materials in Britain, positioning our airforce all around Britian, we are and have been engaged in that same thing right now. These drills will go forward but likely un-announced right up until the last minute which will make Iran feel even more threatened.

      You state “Russia needs Iranian oil”. Do not proliferate falsehoods or instigate conspiracies. Know the facts before posting such rubbish. Russia is in fact one of the top oil producing nations in the world, as is Iran. It would do your e-cred best to rely on fact for future posts.

      People, it is not oil production that is necessarily the factor. It is oil REFINERY capacity. There is plenty of oil capacity in the world, including the US. The Iranians have minimal oil refinery capacity. An oil embargo against Iran would effect shut the nation down due to lack of refined petroleum products, just like Iraq.

      Notice how this nation has very limited expansion of oil refinery in the past 20 years. The infrastucture is limited and all on the Gulf Coast. The Keystone Pipeline would reinforce expansion and upgrades to the only refineries we pocess. Thank you Washington for such dumbassery. Thank you Washington for knowing what is best for us. Thank you Washington, where would we be without you.

    This sort of thing happened all the time during the Cold War, when the Soviet Union was a far greater threat to America and the world than Iran will ever be. Every time, the situation was defused, every time negotiations continued even as forces began to be deployed, as in 1962 and 1973. If Iran were to attempt to close the straits, I would expect even the Obama administration to take very forceful measures. What might happen should Iran test a nuclear weapon is a harder call. Certainly North Korea is more dangerous with than without one, yet Armageddon has not visited the Korean peninsula. Send in the drones? To do what? In any case, do not expect a full-scale US invasion of Iran. Obama, unlike Bush 43, has more sense than that.

There’s the exact amount specified and tested to be only medical or power grade. It‘s the UNSC that is headed by the big ’O’ that is screaming. PLEASE don’t let them distract you with false flags of terror. You have MUCH BIGGER problems RIGHT HERE with the Enemy Expatriation Act.

      Now that the NDAA classifies certain people as ‘enemy combatants’ and the US as a battlefield due to the “War on Terror” what are they going to say about ANYONE caught with drugs since there is the “War on Drugs” as well?

    Hm, I have to agree with the posts I’ve read, since when does America bend because of tensions or presumption of tensions?
    I‘ve made it very clear I don’t like wars, but I‘ve also made it very clear that if I fight one don’t be on the receiving end and expect to survive.
    Israel is our ally, wether we hold a joint training exercise with them ( or not ) is no one else’s business.
    There us something here beyond eyesight, all the start logistics for this exercise must have already been completed by now and we’ve far more force “projection” in arena than is necessary. Additionally, it has long been held as common knowledge ( amongst spooks ) that Iran has possession of two thermonuclear devices already from Russia after the cold war ended. The only thing they truly lacked was a reliable delivery system, they have such systems today.
    I’m sensing a “Maine” moment, don‘t know why other than I don’t trust Obama one little bit. That and those pesky Bildebergs clearly stated a desire for WWIII at there annual meeting in Switzerland this last year. Remember when the LSM told use they didn’t exist, now FOX covers them at the meeting, funny that. Anyway, I digress, about my “Maine” feeling, theses nothing like a fully culpable and duplicate propaganda machine to whip up support for another really BIG war.
    And one of those supposed nukes, going boom over anything ours or allied………

      @Better days – Obama may be a ‘wizard’ of foreign relations in his own delusional dreams. He is so desperate to change the world, and the US at the same time, he will resort to anything to do so. Just like you mentioned of ‘fast and furious’ and the other ones.

      Just recall a saying of how most people have either brains or common sense, seldom both.

      The major announcement was about the endorsement of Tom Davis of SC!
      Wish the Blaze was on top of this but then no one in the msm is. The endorsement was followed by a great speech by Ron Paul. At first I could not find a live feed which was ticking me and my husband off…..but then thankfully there was a link to cbs ustream on the dailypaul.com site.I am so excited about this because all of the GOP candidates have been hoping to secure the endorsement of Tom Davis.
      This is really big.
