‘Last Socialist Republic’: Howard Dean’s Odd, Misguided MSNBC Interview

The former governor of Vermont made another odd, gaffe-filled appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today, attacking Gov. Romney for something he did not say and also announcing that the State of Vermont is the “last Socialist Republic in America.”
First, the wrongly-focused attack on Romney.
The MSNBC segment opened with a news clips about Libya, including a short piece from Neil Cavuto’s interview with Romney. Specifically, the GOP candidate said he hoped that a new government in Libya would send the Lockerbie Bomber, Dr. Abdelmaset al-Megrahi, to the United States to face justice. Romney never mentioned Gadhafi in the clip used on “Morning Joe.”
The portion of the interview used on MSNBC was from :30 to 1:23 of this Fox News clip:
Dr. Dean must not have been paying attention. He wrongly believes that Mr. Romney wants Libya to send Gadhafi to the U.S. and uses his mistake to take off on another unwarranted attack on the GOP frontrunner. Nobody on the show (hosts or producers) caught Dean’s glaring error during that segment or later. Dean just used the opportunity to bash the leading candidate of the opposition.
Watch Dean’s gaffe:
To his credit, fill-in host Willie Geist did call out Dr. Dean on his foreign policy slam of Romney, making note of candidate Obama’s lack of foreign policy experience prior to taking office.
Dean also made a curious statement when he declared Vermont to be the last remaining “Socialist Republic” in America… (the still frame appears to be the same, this short clip happened in the same segment):
The state of Vermont, a Socialist Republic?
Vermont is certainly home to a number of different-thinking Americans, but if the entire state became a Socialist Republic, someone needs to send out a press release or a Tweet.
The official Vermont state website says nothing about being a Socialist Republic. Bernie Sanders, one of the two U.S. Senators serving the state claims to be a Democratic Socialist (but he’s registered as an Independent and caucuses with the Democrats).
As MSNBC’s pool of Left-leaning hosts and experts are often heard quoting the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who gave us the classic line: “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but they are not entitled to their own facts.”
I’m fairly certain that any minute now, Howard Dean will be apologizing to Mitt Romney and the state of Vermont.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 10:30amOne good piece of news: the New York Times is running an article ( middle of the page/ smallish print!) about the new Executive Order regarding illegals/ not deporting unless they have committed crimes. Even the liberals who frequent the NYT are outraged by this . I think the Obama Administration has overplayed their hand on this one. Thank God even liberals have a sense of political over reach. Surprised there is no mention of this here in the Blaze!

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 4:44pmDean`s blaming Republican for the“ leading from behind” attacks is absurd. It actually came from a Nelson Mandela point of view. Obama`s advisors thinking it was brilliant decided it was a good talking point and started spouting it for several weeks. After realizing how dumb it sounded ,decided to distance themselves from it altogether. If Obama ever had a original thought it would die of loneliness.

Truth and even reality have no place in the Democratic Party. Which is why they think that spending trillions of dollars you don’t have when you are already 13 trillion in debt is good fiscal policy. (Of course the Republicans thought it was smart to let them do it.)

The next generation of voters will be even more ignorant of the foundations of our republic than the last, thanks to the radical left and their minions in the teachers unions. Remember Obomaos’ promise to FUNDAMENTALLY (foundationally) change our nation? His adherents are eagerly working towards that goal. Posted on August 23, 2011 at 10:48amHaving lived in Vermont for a number of years, it was more than once that I heard it referred to as the Peoples Republic of Vermont. Good old Bernie, the admitted socialist, is the crowning glory of the liberal electorate of the State.
However, it should be noted that the “real Vermonter” (one born and raised there) is most likely conservative and a Republican. The out of control socialization of the population occurred due to “immigrants”, like Dean and Sanders from NY and Mass. Obviously, the most popular radio station in Vermont is NPR – National Peoples Radio – who often interview the left, far left and uber left nuts in local government.
A few years ago, there was a campaign by the old timers to return to common sense. Their slogan was “TAKE VERMONT BACK.” Although they failed, I surely believe that it is time and attainable that we take America back. That means back to common sense, respect for others and our Constitution.
Report Post »krisinvt
Posted on August 23, 2011 at 12:40pmPAVNVET, I totally agree. I have lived in VT most of my life and a “real” Vermonter is far more conservative than liberal in general. I have been to tea party rallies here and even (gasp!) belong to an Evangelical church. Unfortunately, many young people leave the state for college and don’t come back–for a season or for good. The young that come here for college (for one of the most expensive public schools in the country) tend to stay…and tend to come here because of the liberal agendas.
As for it being a Socialist Republic…I think that only applies to Burlington (where Bernie was elected mayor as an open Socialist) and Montpelier. The rest of us are trying to make a difference the old fashioned way– working hard, paying (high!) taxes and taking care to insulate our kids from the system.
