Laugh or Cry? Video Shows D.C. Tourists Can’t Answer Basic Civics Questions

Yesterday we published a depressing story showing that just 13 percent of high school seniors showed solid academic performance in American history. Today, it seems we are seeing the effects of such poor performance.

This week, the folks over at MRC TV took a camera to the White House and decided to see how well some tourists would do if they were asked some basic civics questions. And the results were horrendous:

You would think that the quintessential symbol of the American political system, the White House, would attract tourists who are knowledgeable or at least interested in or curious about American politics.

You would be wrong.

The results were, in a word, depressing.

Get some Kleenex people.  Because this is going to make you weep for your country, or laugh until you cry.

Who’s Joe Biden? No clue. Who’s the Speaker of the House? That one guy. Name one Supreme Court Justice? Hmmmm.

    Those of you suggesting this has to do with progressivism or liberalism might want to do a little reality check.

    Anyone with political power benefits from having an ignorant public, regardless of their political affiliations or philosophy. The vast majority of people in this country, sadly, frequently find it difficult to answer questions like this. It’s got nothing to do with how people vote or where they lean politically.

    Making people more informed about basic, indisputable facts of government (like who the speaker or VP is) should be something we’re all on board with. Why make this a partisan thing?

      As you have said, like a Weiner in denial…. deny its you (or your party) until caught and then beg for reflection and another chance to do it again.       Not quite. Libertarians want an educated public. It’s the opposite of Progressivism. Libertarianism is about understanding freedom and the rule of law. For Progressives, an uneducated populace benefits them. No one would consider voting for a Libertarian unless they had at least some understanding of the intentions of the Founding Fathers and they believed that MAN CAN RULE HIMSELF BETTER THAN ANY KING OR TYRANT.

    I’m not surprised. Too many of our so called citizens can’t take time away from watching American Idol, Survivor or other brain rotting productions. Instead, it’s easier for them to get all they need to know from 10 second sound bites. Add to that the school systems that are taken over and controlled by teachers unions who attempt to rewrite history or just omit the parts that would enlighten the public. And the media, who is mostly liberal broadcasts as much propaganda to keep the manipulation of the public in their favor. Just dumb down the public and their easier to control

    The progressive agenda at work. Make all your subjects fat, dum and happy. The less they know the more we can get away with… Our education system is being run by the same people that want to overthrow our Republic. They have been at this for many decades, while we have been consumed with TV mini series, the latest gadget, etc. No one is being taught real history anymore, and no one is introduced to our Constitution, how it was formed, or the people responsible for it (that and the Bible should be our entire ciriculum). We have lost our way, and the only ones that can bring it back are the individuals; the freedom loving Americans that understand the true genius of the Republic.

      Have you noticed how “smart” the home schooled children seem to be these days? Even though most parents are not professional educators, they get great results from their children simply because they keep them out of the reach of the government mind controllers.

      If we the people do not take back out school systems soon, very soon, we will no longer have a free market republic. The socialist elite will take that away from us and replace it with Marxism and famine. (Take a good look at North Korea!)

      Idiocy testing for voters? Undo-able. Allowing land owners only to vote was a smart idea by our Founders, but ALSO undo-able.
      The answer is to educate your friends and family about these things, and if they blow you off or are stupid, tell them that the voting day has been changed to WEDNESDAY instead of Tuesday.
      They are stupid. They will fall for it.

      I would blame the culture of anti-intellectualism that pervades the Tea Party and other conservative organizations like it.       You know originally Land Owners were the only people allowed to vote, and the logic behind this was that land owners would vote responsibly because they had something to lose.

      Of course, Andrew Jackson changed that, but to be honest about the situation I am not so certain that everyone should be allowed to vote. I think either A) If you are employed you can vote, or B) if you are getting federal aid you cannot vote.

      Of course that is merely speculation and not much thought put into how we should implement said system, so do not bombard me with hundreds of questions on the details of such a plan.

      I think our country would actually elect people based on their principles versus the American Idol fiasco I see daily here on the Blaze.

      This is why people don’t get to vote for the President. Obama‘s name wasn’t on the ballot–there is a buffer zone known as the electoral college. So why are these people saying they voted for “Obama” or “McCain”. There would have to be a test given to voters on their civic knowledge before allowed to vote directly for a President. Idiots don’t qualify!

      This is the result of the best trained most professional teaching pool the Country has ever known. But to be fair to them what they teach is left up to the Political Cast that chooses the course curriculum,books and sets the standards. I answered all the question asked because I find this stuff interesting and need to remind myself most people don’t, that their interest take them down different roads toward different interests.

      As a foster parent and seeing the complete absence of education that they give these kids, it is and has always been disturbing. I have known dozens of kids in and out of the “system” and they’re all dumb as bricks. I love em don’t get me wrong but I constantly look at these kids and think, “WOW no one taught these kids ANYTHING!”

      You, my friend, are a moron. Bachman and Palin know much more about US history than Obama and pretty much EVERY member of the Democratic Party. In fact, the Tea Party and pretty much all conservatives know much more about US history than Democrats. A little intelligence can go a long way, you know.
