Lawmaker Says Air Force Class Suspension Over Bible Verses ‘Misinterprets 1st Amendment’

Sen. John Cornyn Writes to Air Force About Class Suspension Over Bible VersesBack in early August, The Blaze brought you the controversy surrounding a missile training course that the Air Force suspended following complaints about the inclusion of Bible verses in the curriculum.

Now, Sen. John Cornyn (Texas) is asking for a detailed report from the Air Force that explains why the course, entitled “Just War Theory,” was canned (the course was taught at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base).

Clearly bothered by the Air Force’s willingness to amend the course to remove the Christian passages, Cornyn sent a letter of concern to Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley. In the note, which was given exclusively to Fox News Radio, he wrote:

“…suspending a course like this because of references to religious texts misinterprets the First Amendment.  Although our Founding Fathers rightly included language in the Constitution that precludes the Federal government from establishing an official religion, this language does not, as some have argued, protect them from exposure to religious references.  The First Amendment is intended to guarantee an individual’s right to the free exercise of religion according to his or her conscience.” [You can view the entire letter here.]

Sen. John Cornyn Writes to Air Force About Class Suspension Over Bible Verses

Texas Sen. John Cornyn

Others, of course, disagree with Cornyn’s take on the matter. Despite the fact that the course had been implemented for 20 years without incident, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) says that it violates the constitution’s intent to keep church and state separated.

On the MRFF’s web site, the group — which has taken a hand-on role in this matter – describes itself as follows:

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the United States Armed Forces fully receive the Constitutional guarantees of religious freedom to which they and all Americans are entitled by virtue of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

The MRFF filed a complaint back in August on behalf of 31 missile launch officers, threatening to file a lawsuit if the Air Force refused to suspend the course.

Following Cornyn’s letter, there‘s no telling what the Air Force’s response will be. As The Blaze reported last month, David Smith, the spokesman for the Air Force’s Air Education and Training Command, says that the MRFF’s concerns have led the military branch to conclude that the inclusion of the Bible verses is an “inappropriate approach” in today’s society.

As I saw at least one other point out…I agree with this change for one reason.

I don’t believe a government-run entity such as the military should be basing any training/teaching with bible verses in mind…nor any religion. If you want to pray and worship and whatever else, then you are absolutely free to do so.

But, to all your Christians: If this course has quotes from a Muslim faith instead? You’d be calling for the heads of those that implemented these lessons. There may be one or two that would hold to what they have said here, but almost all of you would be having a massive fit that they were catering to the Muslims and rightly so.

It is no different that they are catering to Christians and anyone that is not a Christian has a right to be upset over it in THIS case. Why? Because our military wasn’t founded based on Christian principles. The military from the day it was created was a mishmash of everyone’s faiths whether Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Quaker, Hindu, etc.

The leadership has no place pushing religion on any of our troops, but every single one of our troops has a right to whatever faith they wish to(or wish not to) participate in on their own.

Your whole statement is false. This country as well as the military was started on christian beliefs and principles. That is why there is freedom of religion, where are values of right and wrong and a “just war” come from. Our christian roots is why this nation prospered and became the greatest nation on earth. It is when we left these roots and beliefs we as a nation suffered for it.

You say they were “pushing” religion. If you don’t know the verse how do you know they were pushing?. By your own admission that religion has no place in the military, then chapels and chaplains should be done away with. If a military person wants a god then let them seek that god off base and not on govt. property. When a military person is dying on the battle field then let them scream for their own god but above all not a chaplain. The chaplains should also be done away with in the house and senate because after all we are a secular culture now. MLK day should also be done away with because it is founded on the religion of a man and it divides the culture from the unification of communism. It‘s easier to paint a white man black than it is to bleach a black man white and it’s easier to take away a god than it is to introduce a god.

Actually, since the Koran has some things to say about when war is justified, it would be entirely reasonable to include that in a course on Just War. The whole idea of a Just War course is to teach the students what various philosophers have said about when war is justified. The Just War Doctrine is not a Christian thing. Contributors to it, over the past twenty centuries or so, have included pagans, Christians, Jews, and even atheists.

It’s important for our troops to know what the thinkers of the past have said about when war is justified. They shouldn’t have to work it out from scratch for themselves, any more than they should have to work out the rules of mathematics from scratch for themselves. .

Quit trying to obfuscate the issue by dragging in something irrelevant.

I have a problem with a few things you stated…..first we can’t allow organizations to bully us into there belief system. If we are told we can’t incorparate our beliefs into our lives we are hypocrites. If we are nolonger allowed to believe in our faith, then what will we fill the void with, what do they propose we do? second….Islamn is a belief that does not co-exist with other belief systems, it is designed to assimilate all other beliefs into one by power of the sword. It rules by governing thru laws and tyranical regimes. Step out of line and …well…you know the rest. It does not tolorate {other} religions, period. All peaceful religions are like water that can mix without resistance, at there core is love and co-existance….Islamn is not! it is like oil…..never to mix with anything….black is it’s heart, forged in the fires of hell, protected by the dragon of deciet!!!!

“Just War” theory IS a Christian concept. It’s not fm other traditions. It goes back to Aquinas – a major thinker and theologian for the Roman Catholic Church. This makes it a core of the Western Tradition. In islam, any war against the infidel is considered just, to include civilians as both casualties and subsequent slaves. Islam is not part of the Western Tradition — in fact, it is opposed to the Western Tradition of rationality and the ethics derived from the Bible.

If Christianity is illegal they should just say it, get it done and over it instead of these mind games of Subversion that are really annoying and disrespectful. If the Bible is illegal the President of the United Marxists Sates Of America( Obama) should command to arrest Christians on sight. Banned the Bible once and for all and stop this Hypocritical nonsense that Karl Marx command under law that Christianity only is not allowed to have any part in any Politics, Social Live or Education. So please Democrats stop the BS, when is time for the Elections for some reason these very Militant Atheist claim to be 100% more Christians than Jesus himself, maybe cause they need that 79% of the Population’s votes who claim to be Christians. I read the entire blog and found it to be one of the most rediculous conspiracy theories to date. The writer, Aaron Fleszar, provides ZERO verifiable facts throughout the supposed expose. In fact, his entire theory is based upon look-alike individuals allegedly enticing internet users to engage in get-rich-quick schemes as a ruse for government agents to identify terrorist operatives and others whose intent is to overthrow the United States.

Like Glenn Beck repeatedly advises, please do your homework. And, refrain from spreading conspiracy theories unless you find verifiable evidence of insidious activities. The free church was always intended to be separate from the state. This is why Anabaptists were killed and why baptists even in early America were hunted. Today most good Christians have lost sight of the fact that we do NOT want a theocracy! Every time the state becomes involved with the church the church becomes the harlot. This never fails. America is NOT a Christian nation, nations do NOT have souls! America WAS founded on Judeo-Christian principles and I want Christian men as our leaders…but we need to draw a line and we need to do it fast. We are fighting the wrong fight. We cannot ram our beliefs down other people’s throats. God did not intend that. That is why He gives us the choice to turn towards Him.

I go back and forth on this myself, it is a hard line to find. The reason this nation is going down the drain is because we have turned away from God…But…Things are not as clear-cut as they were in earlier times in this nation. There are many different religious beliefs today and atheism, while being a relative minority, has flourished. I do not need to have God on my money or in the pledge to be a Christian. I do not have to have the Ten Commandments hanging in a courthouse or a manger scene in the city park. I do not necessarily want to lose these battles, but I do understand they are not as significant as most Christians make out. Christ is in our hearts and lives, that is where He belongs.

I am, you can check my posts. I am not perfect I have been very un-Christlike in many posts, and I have argued when I should have simply retired…But I tell others about Christ everywhere I go. Do you? God should never be out of sight He should be displayed brilliantly in everything you do and say. But He does not need to be hung on a wall or put in a pledge or on a coin. Remember what Jesus told the Pharisees and Herodians in Mark 12: Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. If you belong to God then YOU are to do His work here on earth.

Freebird, let me put it in a simpler way. If you want revival, I mean true revival not the 4 day evangelist visit thing, then it must come through the church, not the government. Government cannot and should not legislate morality. A copy of the Ten Commandments hanging on a classroom wall is meaningless, it gathers dust, no one reads it. A motto on a coin is meaningless. Faith in God begins at home with yourself and family. Then…Don’t just sit on your faith, tell others what Jesus has done for them. We need to quit the petty denominational/doctrinal infighting and turn back to Scripture. You want revival? It starts here, with you and me.

Yes, but we as believers are still responsible to be “salt and light.” Historically Baptists have promoted the separation of church and state, but the purpose has always been to guard against the establishment of a “state controlled church,” NOT to exclude the influence of the church and Biblical precepts on the state. Thomas Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists, ironically seized upon by the Supreme Count to support the exclusion of religious influence upon governmen because of it’s reference to “a wall of separation between church and state,” was never intended to dim inis or restrict the practice or proclamation on the Christian faith in the public square. Jefferson in fact ended his letter as follows: “I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection and blessing of the common father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves & the Danbury Baptist association assurances of my highest esteem.” Furthermore, on Sunday, Jan. 3,1802, Jefferson appeared at church services at the House of Representatives, two days after recommending in his reply to the Danbury Baptists “a wall of separation between churchmand state.”. During the remainder of his administrations he attended these services constantly. He even granted permission to various denominations to worship in executive office buildings. In addition, scholars have recently argued that in the 1790′s Jefferson developed a more favorable view of Christianity that led him to endorse his fellow f

      DR4Soul,

Agreed. Also notice I did not comment on this particular story. I simply do not have enough information to make a judgment. What were the verses and how were the verses used? My point though, is that the founding fathers never intended to have a single denomination over all others. There really were no other “religions” in proliferation at that time but it is a different story today.

Should public schools be Christian oriented? I will have to differ from most Christians here and say no, they should not. Should there be a minute if silence after the pledge to the American flag, so students can pray or meditate or just whack off? Absolutely! I do not want public school teachers teaching my children about Christianity. That is MY job.

I guess I am saying that I can see where Christians are swinging the pendulum too far to the other side lately and that is mostly why we have such hard blowback from other religions and atheists.

I think in issues such as prayer before sporting events majority should rule, however, Christians need to be aware that this can work both ways. We should also be sensitive to other beliefs. No they are not right but it is not our place to diminish them. The early Christians did not do this. Paul did not do this on Mars Hill. Christ cannot be force-fed to people.

Very well said. I understand that people want the governement to help spread their religion, but when does the government do anything right? And some people want their church in the governement and the government in their church? What good could possibly come of that? Even as an Athiest, I’d much rather see a Christian in power than any athiest, or person of a different religion. Just as long as they don’t try to use the government to push their religious beliefs. I prefer to learn from history, and even Christians in government is bad. Drawn and quartered, or burned at the stake for heresy? And that’s just for people who think that indulgences might be a bad idea…

Even though the US is in decline for the moment, this could just be a blimp on the radar. I’ve been reading a lot of history lately, and times have been far worse in the past. Just looking at the pictures of the people in the early part of last century are depressing… and they stay depressing all the way up until the end of WWII. Christians should use the holy bible as their guideline for all things, not religion (that is manmade) The scriptures from the bible do teach us about going to war.

here are just a couple of scriptures:

Luke 14:31 (this from Jesus himself)
Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand?
      Ecclesiastes 3:8
“There is…a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”

war is a result of sin,
      sin leads to bloodshed.
sin has always been paid for by blood, whether it is man’s in-humanity to man or it is the gift of Jesus Christ on the cross.
      You Choose

Jesus flipped the tables and chased the money hungry creeps out with a whip…there is a time for war and a time for peace. Christians are not the wimps many believe they should be. Yes we will turn the other cheek, but only to get the fart aimed in the right direction, always facing mecca and the liberal commies !!!

Religion, race, money, all things human are used as justification for war. It doesn’t make those things evil.

I am a strong Christian, but I don’t know if I agree with him. If the references were from the Koran, I would not want to study the material unless it were to demonstrate what type of twisted thinking we are fighting against!

As a strong Christian, you should know your faith well enough to defend it. God has censored nothing – all thought is available to us. He simply expects you and I to be wise in our examination of all thoughts and ideas. What do you fear that you would censor others? As a strong Christian, I can defend using scripture and materials from all religious groups. Your way denies scripture BECAUSE of other religious materials. Fear denies access, faith opens access.

      Deannarae,

That is a VERY good point and something to think about. As a poster says up at the top of this page though, I hope you stand by this principle when they start using Koran verses also.
