Lawmakers and organizations are reacting to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Obamacare, including the individual mandate, in almost all its entirety.
(Related: Supreme Court: ‘Obamacare’ Constitutional)
Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said less than an hour following the ruling the House will vote on a full repeal of Barack Obama’s health care law during the week of July 9, Politco reports.
“The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold ObamaCare is a crushing blow to patients throughout the country,” Cantor said. “ObamaCare has failed to keep the President’s basic promise of allowing those who like their health care to keep it, while increasing costs and reducing access to quality care for patients.”
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) released the following statement following the Supreme Court’s ruling:
The president’s health care law is hurting our economy by driving up health costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire. Today’s ruling underscores the urgency of repealing this harmful law in its entirety. What Americans want is a common-sense, step-by-step approach to health care reform that will protect Americans’ access to the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a lower cost. Republicans stand ready to work with a president who will listen to the people and will not repeat the mistakes that gave our country ObamaCare.
U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said about Obamacare and the high court ruling:
Today’s decision makes one thing clear: Congress must act to repeal this misguided law. Obamacare has not only limited choices and increased health care costs for American families, it has made it harder for American businesses to hire. Today’s decision does nothing to diminish the fact that Obamacare’s mandates, tax hikes, and Medicare cuts should be repealed and replaced with common sense reforms that lower costs and that the American people actually want. It is my hope that with new leadership in the White House and Senate, we can enact these step-by-step solutions and prevent further damage from this terrible law.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in his own statement called for Congress to repeal the president’s healthcare law and replace it with real reform:
What’s important to remember is that what the Court rules on is whether something is constitutional or not, not whether it’s a good idea. And while the Court has said that the law is constitutional, it remains a bad idea for our economy, and I hope that in the fall we will have a majority here that will not just repeal this law, but replace it with real solutions that will insure more people and cost a lot less money.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.):
In passing health reform, we made history for our nation and progress for the American people. We completed the unfinished business of our society and strengthened the character of our country. We ensured health care would be a right for all, not a privilege for the few. Today, the Supreme Court affirmed our progress and protected that right, securing a future of health and economic security for the middle class and for every American.
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) released the following statement on Obamacare ruling:
When Obamacare was sold to the American public by Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and other Democrats, they essentially lied to the public and said it was not a tax. However, in order to pay for this monstrous government takeover, taxes were imposed in a variety of ways, including through the individual mandate that required everyone to buy government insurance or pay penalties. Today, the Court said Congress can impose new taxes and that the individual mandate is constitutional as a new tax. In short, if it walks like a tax, talks like a tax, and quacks like a tax, the Supreme Court will tell us it’s a tax. And so it did.
As a healthcare provider, I remain confident that the best solution is a full repeal of this costly burdensome legislation which will hurt patients by undermining access to quality care while adding billions to our deficit. I will continue to advocate for stronger, smarter and more cost effective measures to solve our nation’s healthcare crisis without government interference.
The Republican National Convention released this video response to the Supreme Court’s Obamacare ruling, saying “The final verdict of Obamacare is now in your hands”:
The Chamber of Commerce released the following statement:
While we respect the Court’s decision, today’s Supreme Court ruling does not change the reality that the health care law is fundamentally flawed. Left unchanged, it will cost many Americans their employer-based health insurance, undermine job creation, and raise health care costs for all.
It is imperative that policymakers and the business community now work together to develop and support genuine reforms that control costs, improve access, ensure quality, and promote wellness. These reforms and goals are achievable. The Chamber and the American business community are ready to go to work to enact true health care reform. Given the Court’s decision, the need for action has never been greater.”
We will continue to bring you reactions as they become available.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 12:28pmThis is what it says about lower income citizens:
Report Post »The “[s]hared responsibility payment,” as thestatute entitles it, is paid into the Treasury by “taxpayer[s]” when they file their tax returns. 26 U. S. C. §5000A(b). It does not apply to individuals who do not pay federal income taxes because their household income is less than the filing threshold in the Internal Revenue Code. §5000A(e)(2). For taxpayers who do owe the payment, its amount is determined by such familiar factors astaxable income, number of dependents, and joint filing status. §§5000A(b)(3), (c)(2), (c)(4). The requirement topay is found in the Internal Revenue Code and enforced by the IRS, which—as we previously explained—must assessand collect it “in the same manner as taxes.”
This proves they WON”Y pay anything

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 11:31amWe were sold out by the Supreme Court. The tax argument was not brought up and Obama says it is not a tax and yet they use that as the reason to approve it. I thought thay had to consider the argument and not make one up. If Romney and the Republicans cannot overturn this law then the country we love and know is fiinished as the takers will now control. Atlas Shrugs warning is now reality. God help us!

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 12:11pmAs one who has followed this closely I can tell you this. The solicitor general argued before the court that it is a tax. Even though it was not passed as one in the legislation. That is what saved it. It was struck down under the commerce clause but upheld as a taxing issue because it was argued as such. So to put it plainly it was passed on a deceptive premise. But it will be implemented and funded with funds via taxation. A tax, mind you, that we were promised would not occur. Just another day in Obamaville, more deception and flagrant violation of the trust of the American citizenry. If this slug is reelected we can say good bye to our America.

He cares not about 3 equal legislative branches of government. I believe the entire Senate and Congress could be 100% Republican and this president would not care. If he can’t get cooperation, he just wakes up in the morning and unilaterally changes law. There is no accountability for him apparently. He, Valerie Jarrett and Napolitano make the laws now.
