Lawmaker’s Sign Cracks Decorum at Obama Job Speech

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Jeff Landry knew not to yell at President Barack Obama during his jobs address Thursday night to Congress. That move made Rep. Joe Wilson famous a couple of years ago, and not necessarily for the better. Instead, Republican leaders urged their members to show up, keep an open mind and be polite — voters were anxious and Congress’ bickering had angered large majorities of them.
So Landry, R-La., instead printed out a small white sign to raise when Obama mentioned how, exactly, he planned to put more Americans to work.
“Drilling(equals)jobs,” it read in big black letters. Seated two rows behind the well-mannered Wilson, R-S.C., Landry held it up when Obama acknowledged that Republicans might have ideas different from his $447 billion jobs package.
It was only a modest departure from decorum, but a sure signal that more than policy disagreements remain between Obama and congressional Republicans whose standoff over raising the debt ceiling last month brought the country to the brink of default. The markets and recession-weary Americans didn’t appreciate the suspense. The nation’s credit rating suffered for the bickering, and Congress’ favorable ratings dropped to around 12 percent.
Aware that some conservatives planned to boycott Thursday’s speech, Republican leaders urged lawmakers returning to Washington this week to be cool. They said that they were listening for ideas they could agree upon to put some of the 14 million unemployed Americans back to work. And they declined to issue a formal, televised response.
Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, a Republican presidential candidate, didn’t make it to the speech, blaming floods in in the rain-ravaged capital. But she did arrive in time to hold her own news conference afterward, where she cast the president’s speech as misguided and political.
“Our patience for speeches, gimmicks and excuses has run out,” she said.
In the House chamber earlier in the evening, there was little joy in the face-to-face meeting between Obama and lawmakers. The White House and House Republicans had sparred even over the date of the address: Obama had proposed Wednesday, at the exact time of the Republican presidential candidates’ televised debate in California. House Speaker John Boehner proposed Thursday instead. The two agreed on 7 p.m., more than an hour before the kickoff of the National Football League season.
“I’ve encouraged my colleagues to come tonight and to listen to the president,” Boehner said Thursday morning. “We ought to be respectful, and we ought to welcome him.”
In the evening, the speaker and the president greeted each other respectfully.
Democrats smarting from Obama’s recent criticisms of Congress were stingy with the whoops, hollers and sustained standing ovations that peppered Obama’s previous addresses to Congress.
Obama called Congress “a circus,” without specifying Republicans, phrasing that many Democrats noticed.
Republicans openly chuckled when Obama insisted that his plan to tax rich people more “isn’t political grandstanding.”
Some Republican lawmakers skipped the speech entirely, making it clear to reporters they felt they had more important business to attend.
Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., tweeted a live town hall from his office, said his spokeswoman, Meredith Griffanti. And Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ill., was home in the Chicago suburbs hosting a meeting with small business owners. South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, who calls himself “Sen. Tea Party,” had planned to skip town before the speech, citing a meeting in Charleston, S.C., with officials and employees of the Boeing Co. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., planned to listen carefully from home, where he wanted to watch the New Orleans Saints play the Green Bay Packers.
But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., scheduled a vote Thursday night immediately after Obama’s speech that kept DeMint, Vitter and the rest of the Senate in Washington.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 3:24amObama is making me soooooo mad. His men raid an all-american business like Gibson guitar, then “suggest” they move thier plant to another country; He sues Arizona because they are doing his job for him; He wants us to spend another 447 billion dollars for a “jobs” program that he has proven will just be a payoff to his supporters. When the oil industry has allready said they would create 1.5 million jobs if he would just allow them to drill (which courts have allready ordered him to do), yet he still refuses.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 8:13amThis jobs bill is proof the Democrats are just a bunch of Keynesians with a guilt complex at the moment. They know their policies have utterly failed in the best test they’ve ever had. All the years of Keynesian economics classes, all the back-room poo-pooing of Reaganomics and supply-side economics and “tax cuts for the rich”– and when a full-on recession is handed to them, with full control of the legislature and executive branches, they put everything they were ever taught into action: TARP (yes, voted on under Bush -by a Democratic legislature- but administered by the Obama Administration), Stimulus, Omnibus, Cash for Clunkers, Dodd-Frank, even Obamacare; all examples of Keynesian economic policy and all complete and abject failures. And now they’re caught. Trapped. In the corner with the smoking gun and the economy is bleeding. And they try and blame the paramedics.
Report Post »This is the reality of the situation and they have not– and cannot conceive why they have failed.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 8:22amCan you say more “Union jobs” = more “Union corruption”. His job bill is a scam….the only way a private construction company will get any part of a highway or bridge project is if they agree to subject themselves to become unionized or pay all union due’s with no union benefits. I have thirty years in construction management and have seen first hand at what happens on a job site when you cross the trade unions….all work comes to a screeching halt.

I wish Obama well as a human being (husband & father), but as President he is God awful. And it gets harder & harder to accord him any dignity or respect with each passing day as his words & actions pile on. He does not even want to be a President of & for all Americans. He is only interested in being President for the moochers, the takers, the irresponsible, the happily dependent, etc.. Oh, & illegal immigrants. He doesn’t actually even care about the truly helpless. He only desires his utopia of a centrally (govt) controlled economy & populace, where people like him decide who gets what & we are all evened or leveled out. He is only concerned about his perception of UNFAIRNESS & UNEVENESS. That really bugs him.
I saw a posting yesterday listing planks of Marx’s communist manifesto – one was no inheritances being passed on. It was relevant to a Dem saying that high state estate taxes were a punishment & to confiscate the wealth so it couldn’t be passed down.
Anyway, this is how Obama thinks. About others that is. A typical liberal, he’ll shelter his wealth so that his children inherit all his recently (& future) acquired fortune.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 3:05amTo be (politically correct) or not to be. That is the question. Answer: DON’T BE (politically correct)!!
When the elites and even many of his constituents began to follow “conventional wisdom,” David Crockett said, “You can all go to hell, I‘m goin’ to Texas!” Sure, Colonel Crockett died at the Alamo shortly after he arrived in Texas. He died a hero. He died fighting for Liberty, Justice and Rule of Law. He was not alone. He was one of many who stood up for Truth and Liberty. Together, they saw to it by way of great sacrifice that Truth, Liberty and Justice would be possible for many millions that would come after them. In many ways, the story of Texas independence is a retelling of the story of American Independence.
It is time for a new retelling of the same story! We MUST have the courage and conviction to start telling the elites–the followers of modern conventional wisdom and the lovers of tyranny–to go to hell. Offend the HELL out of those who reject Liberty in favor of tyranny and control over you and me–We, the People of the United States of America!! Fight for Truth over the Big Lie of conventional wisdom/political correctness (i.e., “Progressive” ideology) even unto death!! This is the only way that American Liberty and Justice will be preserved for our children and grandchildren.

Obama’s tactics are despicable. He continues to blatanly lie at times and employ Alinskyan deceit at other times. Lincoln was not the first Republican, Jefferson was. By continuing to bring up Lincoln and link his progressive agenda with Republican party fundamentals is dishonest (and I’m not a Republican). Lincoln also never let a good crisis go to waste.
I’ll give Obama credit though, he is taking the only approach he can to try to establish his 2012 platform. Fast forward six months; “I urged Congress to put Americans back to work, you heard me beg them to pass my American Jobs Act plan right away, but the Republicans would not let working class Americans go back to work because of their rigid, cuts-only idealogy .”
Free Market Principals in everything we do. That’s the solution.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 2:57amYeah, cute, holding up a sign, like a grade schooler, during an address from the President. No spitballs? It’s pathetic but represents the state of politics today. Any decorum historically accorded our Constitutional government is gone, replaced by the immature, attention grabbing gestures of government officials with the maturity of ten year old boys. Instead of holding up a sign, why didn’t this guy have a press conference afterward and explain his plan for offshore drilling in order to properly represent big oil, which funds his campaign, although not the constituents who lost their livelihoods after the BP oil spill.
Maybe the big oil guys suggested he hold up his sign. I doubt hiconstituentsts did.

You continually show your ignorance on here. Rep Landry is a Louisiana Congressman whose constituents lost their jobs because of Obama’s Moratorium on drilling, not because of the oil spill. Also maybe Obama should follow Landry’s lead and refuse the Government pension and healthcare. Here is what a real Patriotic public servant does as this Headline tells you, “Congressman Jeff Landry formally declined his Congressional health care and retirement.” The only childish one at that speech last night was OBAMA!

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 4:50pmI’ve got to say a few words here because the liberals keep putting half lies and outright false information out. In the fantasy world that liberals live in truth and facts are not important. They don‘t accept facts that don’t meet there narrative. Only what they think they know matters. Of course, everyone knows what Ronald Reagan said about our liberal friends.
We can not drill in the gulf because all the drilling platforms went to Brazil for their deep water drilling. Some facts about that:.
- The water that Brazil is drilling in is deeper than the gulf.
- George Soros is the major stock holder in the company that is doing the drilling in Brazil
I would suggest that even a moron can figure out why Obama banned the drilling in the gulf and he held this position even after the courts ruled against him for a period long enough that the oil companies had to move the drilling platforms.
The second lie that keeps getting put forth here is that the Obama administration has opened up more area for drilling. Yes, his administration has opened up areas where they know there is no oil. Places where there is oil have been kept off limits and even when one department in his administration opens up an area, another department steps in and uses other regulations to keep oil companies from drilling.
Obama sees it as a game. And he is winning while the American people are losing.

Why do you knowingly make intellectually dishonest post? You are too knowledgeable to unknowingly post that ignorant of a comment. You know about the reduction of permits granted since the spill as seen in the link below.
http://www.newslettertree.com/release-gpi-gulf-permit-index-as-of-september-6/156799/
Most of your posts are dishonest. Like you claiming the rich are not paying their fair share. If those who pay the highest percent/largest portion of taxes aren’t paying their “fair share” it means everyone else is paying LESS of their fair share.
Pardon the simple example but if say it is cold outside when the temperature is 35, wouldn’t I be even colder if the temperature was 25?
Again I have made over 15 requests the last couple months. I would really like to know what liberal ideas you have applied in your life and reaped the benefit of. You answered once with some Bible verses and those were nice. However I am asking for specific examples from your life. Again if no response I will assume you didn’t see this not that you’re ducking the question.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 2:32amLet’s see. 447 billion is just about half of one trillion I believe. Did one trillion in stimulus spending help? It kept some government employees on the payroll for a year and that was about it. The dems will never learn. They need to get out of the way and let the grown ups run the place.

You forgot to mention the promise that if they got their 787 billion dollars unemployment would not go above 8%. Well that was a lie and spending another 447 billion will not help either. I‘m in favor of extending unemployment benefits to those who can’t find a job because of the policies of BO. Until he’s gone they will need those checks to survive.
We need to look to the future (get BO out of the white house) and develop a government culture that promotes real jobs. That will not happen as long as the dems control the senate and the white house.
