MSNBC‘s Lawrence O’Donnell Responds to Beck: ‘We Are All Socialists Now’

On his Tuesday night version of “Last Word” Lawrence O‘Donnell went after Glenn Beck for seizing on O’Donnell’s admission last Friday that he was a socialist. In an over seven minute explanation, O’Donnell concludes, “we are all socialists now”:

Here’s my take (usually reserved for the blog, but I’ll include it here).

The most surprising part of O‘Donnell’s follow-up is his defense. He doesn‘t say that he’s not a socialist, just that we all are. In doing so, he explains a sort of  “gotcha” moment directed towards Beck, saying that last week was not a sudden outburst of the heart (as Beck had portrayed it)– no, he‘s admitted before he’s a socialist, along with Bill Maher (and they both threw Barack Obama into their fold). Take that.

“I started saying things like that publicly over ten years ago,” O’Donnell said. “What I’ve been trying to do by saying it is make people understand what socialism is, and that every taxpayer in this country, every social security recipient, every medicare beneficiary, and everyone who uses the post office is participating in successful socialism, practical socialism every day.”

“We need to take the political sting out of the word socialist,” he added, and then explained that there is good socialism and bad socialism (he’s a proponent of the good kind). And right before showing the infamous Newsweek cover that takes the same approach, he boasts that the magazine drew the same conclusion he did 16 years earlier: “we are all socialists now.”

There’s a lot in there. Let’s recap:

  1. I said I was a socialist
  2. Beck pointed it out
  3. WAIT, but I’ve said it before, so don’t take so much joy in it, Beckster
  4. We are all socialists because our economy is mixed: there’s comrade Boehner, Paul, Obama, and even Beck
  5. Unless you advocate for the repeal of everything that has even a hint of socialism, you are socialist
  6. There’s good and bad socialism: I like the good kind
  7. Newsweek was right, but I said it 16 years before its editors even thunked it
  8. “We are all socialists now”

I’m sure Beck will respond. But here‘s what I can’t get past. In his on-air admission last Friday, O’Donnell used the “socialist” designation to separate himself from “mere” liberals and progressives, not to point out how similar he was to them. If what he really meant was that we’re all socialists, how come he used it as a unique identifier?

A final thought: isn’t saying we are all socialists, all the same with no real differences, so, well, socialistic?

Good socialism and bad socialism. Who decides? If you benefit, you like it. If you pay for it, you’re against it. If you are in the ruling elite, you can siphon off prosperity. The ruling elites want their luxuries and perks and have no intention of living like the middle class. When hard times come, the middle class will be expected to share the sacrifice. Progressives keep adding to the government provided goodies to get votes. What’s next? Housing, food, job, education? You can give a job, but you cannot order excellence. Why work if everything is provided for free? You soon run out of other people’s money.

It‘s funny that people who call themselves socialist don’t know what socialism is. They confuse and include anything a government does with what socialism really is.
Socialism is the government owning or heavily controlling the means of production. It’s an economic policy and not like rooting for your favorite baseball team.
The post office operates , and badly , on revenues from the people who USE it. Yes, it‘s run by the government and yes it’s subsidized by taxpayer money, but not by design. It’s suppose to be run completely on revenues from stamps.
It’ proof the free market is best and that the feds can not run a thing without wasting money .
Social Security is an account of YOUR money, that you get doled back to you in you later years.
It is going belly up BECAUSE the feds handle it, not despite the fact they do.
Medicare is insurance run by the goverment, an insurance policy that the individual has to pay…..goverment run and in the red.
None of this is the government owning the means of production.

“every taxpayer in this country, every social security recipient, every medicare beneficiary, and everyone who uses the post office is participating in successful socialism” – Successful???? Coercion in a enterprise (the post office) that didn’t offer overnight or second day service until they were challenged by competition of Fed Ex and UPS. Medicare and Medicaid WILL go bankrupt, Social Security is a Ponzi scheme that is sure to collapse. This is his idea of successful. Socialism HAS NEVER been a success. See Greece, France, UK (yesterday). Are these successes? I say no. Capitalism (Not CRONY Capitalism) and the free market have made America the strongest and greatest country in less than 200 Years. Compare that to all of Europe who have gone the socialist route and declined. Is that really where we would want to travel, well hold on because we are on the path. Thanks Pelosi, Reid, and Obama.

Look at all the ‘programs’ this idiot calls out as being part of ‘Socialist’ America; SS, Medicare, and (this is almost too funny for words) the Postal Service. All of these ‘programs’ are bankrupt or close to it. All are bereft with incalculable fraud and waste and increasing numbers of Americans are losing faith in them all. The Post Office in my town began closing on Saturdays a couple of months ago. Saturday mail delivery, as a casualty, is not far behind. They lose Billions of dollars every year. SS and Medicare are going broke at breakneck speeds and this clown holds them up as come kind of success story. Entitlement programs have left us Trillions in debt with no end in sight. This was not what America was intended to be, folks. Socialism is a fraud. The only equality it provides is to leave EVERYONE equally poor while the elites live well. Mr O’donnell fancies himself among the elites. That should say it all.

The reason we have socialistic tendencies at all is because of our tax structure which is progressive in nature so politicians can bribe the masses. If we could start a low rate flat tax or a consumption tax and dump this progressive tax system we have now, we could really watch the decline of socialism. Socialists would dry up like so many fish gasping for air on the river bank.

So to stand back and sum this up we’re all just a bunch of socialist/communists and those that are capitalists are the odd ones because now there’s no such thing. How can I retire, I have to pay for health care for 26 year old “children”.
How can I retire if medicare is slashed to pay for the poor defenseless 20 somethings. Don’t worry kids, grandma can take care of you. When the Bureaucrat replaces the “free market” with a regulation, we all lose. Every regulation gives a political crony a windfall at the expense of the general population. Printing money is not the only cause of inflation!

If you believe that the tyrants act in the best interest of the individual, consider the following quote:

“If the government is to tell big business men how to run their business, then don’t you see that big business men have to get closer to the government even than they are now? Don’t you see that they must capture the government, in order not to be restrained too much by it? Must capture the government? They have already captured it.”

The quote is from an early wannabe tyrant, Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Since then each encroachment on our individual liberty has caused problems that have been used to justify more tyranny.

THE DEVASTATING AFFECT OF THE BUREAUCRACY:

Rules and regulations created and enforced by the “Fourth Branch of Government” (the bureaucracy) that restrict innovation, inhibit the creation of wealth and provide advantages to the “technologically challenged” are the root cause of our problems. Inflation, credit and failure of financial institutions are just the symptoms, an attempt to cover up the failure of “disastrous centralized planning.”

Money manipulation is simply a method of misappropriation of wealth. Wealth must be created before it can be misappropriated and the Bureaucracy inhibits the creation of wealth.

Our problems started when the bureaucracy obtained significant power during Roosevelt’s (T) Administration. About 10 years later the Fed Was created and it’s been downhill every since.

Chapter 8 (The Bureaucracy – ICC) of “21st Century Common Sense” addresses this point in detail, including a description of the “Iron Triangle” (control of the bureaucracy by special interest) and an enlighten quote by Woodrow Wilson highlighting the capture of the Bureaucracy by “special interest.”

The bibliography on my website allows you to visit the websites used for the book’s research just by “control-clicking” on the website address.

In his “Theory of Moral Sentiments” Adam Smith grounded healthy capitalism in a deep sympathy and caring for our fellow man. In other words charity.

According to Smith humans have a natural tendency to care about the well-being of others for no other reason than the pleasure one gets from seeing them happy. He calls this sympathy, defining it “our fellow-feeling with any passion whatsoever”

The difference between this and socialism is that it is grounded in individual, voluntary acts–not from bureaucrats, panels or the state.

The best hospitals are church hospitals. The worst are state run hospitals.

The problem isn’t capitalism–it is the fact that this country isnt capitalistic enough in Smith’s conception of captalism.

Because if it were in Smith’s conception, charity, values and principles would be as strong as the economic mechanism of the free market. It would be grounded in charity and love.

And the state is incapable of love. Only individuals can love.

Government monopolies are the worst because they also have a monopoly on force to prevent competition. No private business, even if huge, can force you to purchase what they provide.

“The only security men can have for their political liberty, consists in keeping their money in their own pockets” — Lysander Spooner, 19th Century libertarian and entrepreneur who was forced out of the letter-delivery business by the U.S. government. He committed the crime of competition.

What you have been trying to do Mr. O’Donnell is move the Overton Window.

I’m sorry but the post office, social security and medicare have been in the red for years. What part is he talking about that is successful. He needs a teleprompter to try to put a thought together that makes an ounce of sense. Still using too many drugs, I guess.

I used to do a little
But a little wouldn’t do it
So a little got more and more.
      Just kept trying
      To get a little better
Said a little better than before.

Guns‘N’Roses on being addicted to heroin. Kind of like how our Socialist/Liberal/Progressive/Statist/Democrats are dedicated to redistribution of wealth and the welfare state.
The intellectually honest of us do already know our economy is riddled with socialism. And those of us who are honest and aware also realize it is a cancer that will destroy the whole system. As Thatcher once said, “Socialism is fine until everyone else’s money runs out.” Bring it on, Larry!

The modern day failure of social security and medicare proves the failure of socialism. China and Cuba are communist. What we fear is the intrusion of the minor aspect of socialism into the harsh rule of communism. We are capatilist not socialist or communist. He is right the failures of socialism were brought to us by a socialist and added to by a communist (Obama) and promoted by proganda (MSNBC). He talks like he is proud to admit that he is associated with these failures and revolutionary radical change. I will never say I am a socialist. They wouldn’t in the eastern Soviet Union and Stalin killed them for it. I won’t be killed for a label.
