Lawsuit: Singer Patti LaBelle Threw Bottle of Water at Toddler During Spat in NYC Lobby

Lawsuit: Patti LaBelle Threw Bottle of Water at Toddler

NEW YORK (AP) — R&B diva Patti LaBelle hurled curses — and half a bottle of water — at a woman and her 18-month-old daughter after a dust-up over parenting in an apartment building lobby, according to a lawsuit filed Monday and the family’s lawyer.

LaBelle‘s publicists and lawyer didn’t immediately respond to Kevin and Roseanna Monk’s lawsuit.

The couple live in a Manhattan building where the Grammy Award-winning singer stayed for a time while appearing in the Broadway musical “Fela!” last fall, said the Monks’ lawyer, Samuel L. Davis.

He said LaBelle chastised Roseanna Monk for letting the toddler take some steps away from the mother as she grappled with some luggage and a car seat in the building’s lobby on the afternoon of Nov. 11, 2010. After Monk scooped up the child and told LaBelle it was none of her business, the singer threw water on them from a bottle she was carrying and then launched into an obscenity-filled tirade, he said.

When the child started wailing, Roseanna Monk made a remark to LaBelle, and the singer charged at her and tried to hit her, Davis said.

The Monks filed a complaint with police; no arrests were made.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, comes five months after a West Point cadet sued LaBelle over a Houston airport scuffle with her bodyguards. He said they attacked him for no reason in March 2010. She countersued the cadet, saying he tried to get into her limousine and was drunk and using racial slurs, which he denied.

Davis said Roseanna Monk had asked LaBelle for an apology and a donation to a children’s cancer charity but was rebuffed. The Monks feel “someone‘s got to teach her even a diva can’t attack and frighten and assault regular people in the building,” their lawyer said.

LaBelle’s singing career has spanned more than four decades, two Grammys and several hits, including the 1974 disco smash “Lady Marmalade.”

Patty Labelle is a publicity HOG, but not in a good way. She feeds at the trough. She seems to like incendiary incidents. Where were her body guards this time? Hope they sue her arse.

This woman hasn’t been relevant in almost 25 years. She was hell to work with when she “mattered” and has been out of control ever since. First there was Houston where her thugs beat up a guy, and now this. She needs to knocked on her @ss a few times. Maybe that will shake nudge her brain a little and help her join the real world. Where’s her reality show? She could be the whacky neighbor of Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston. Imagine in the opening scene – Bobby & Whitney look out the front window and see LaBelle heading towards their house. Bobby says – “Oh, Oh, here comes crazy lady!” Priceless!

Who died and made Labelle the queen of parenting? In most cases people are forced to keep their mouths shut and turn a blind eye to children misbehaving in public. But this wasn’t even an issue of misbehavior; big deal that the child was walking around. More children should be walking anyway! I see way too many capable children being carried or rolled around in strollers. As for Labelle, she should have minded her own business and complied when told to do so. I hope the settlement the family gets from Labelle is put towards paying off some debt or put towards a college education for the kid.

In Virginia, that little tantrum would be classified as “hurling a missile”, a felony. Tack on a second felony for reckless endangerment. And oh, given that she has the means to, she could be held without bond as a flight risk. That would give this celebuturd a taste of reality.

I get tired of parents not being responsible for their kids – letting them open-mouthed bawl in public, letting them run around and do whatever they want while whispering “Stop it, Billy!, Stop it!”.

But I’m not gonna respond like Patti is accused.

So is she going to counter sue and say the baby made racial slurs at her like tried to get into her limousine like she did the West Point Cadet even though the video clearly shows he didn’t make any such attempts.

The cadet could not graduate with his class this past May. He was re-admitted in August and will graduate with the Class of 2012. Glad WP finally got it right. The whole incident at the airport was on the surveillance camera which showed he was on the phone when her body guards approached him and decked him.

I agree that people should be exceptionally careful about their children – no matter where they are. But what Ms. LaBelle did was assault – and she needs to be taught a lesson. There is no way a person should ever assault anyone else – not with anything – and to do that to a child is wrong in so many ways I can’t even enumerate. There is no excuse for being a bitc#. She’s raised children, so she should know better.

The child was in the lobby of the building where she or he lived. It didn’t sound like there was any endangerment issues. The child should be allowed to walk around the lobby of the building without harassment if the baby is not causing any kind of disturbance or disruption.

      @taquoshi

I was at the post office once with my 2.5 y/o daughter. all I had to do was write an address on an envelope and put it in the slot to be mailed. My daughter was running all over the place – away from me. I tried my best to keep her close… but a few seconds of writing one line of the address, and I looked up and saw her at a door, with a woman trying to get her to leave with her. This in a town of approx 65K population during the college school year. It only takes a few seconds of inattention. From then on, I kept her up on the writing table and my arms around her. I am not a bad mother, but this was a lesson that has never left me.

I remember seeing a mother with 3 children – and she had her hands full with a baby and two older ones who wouldn’t obey her. The 2 older ones just walked out the front door of the post office while the mom was trying to do something with the baby. I went after them and asked them if their mom knew where they were. They said no, so I told them they needed to go back into the building and stay with their mom. Their mom was extremely grateful – it was very difficult for her to handle the 3 kids at that time. She wasn’t a bad mom – just had too much to handle with older children who didn’t understand how important it was to stay with their mother.

Sorry, but I do have to say that there are devices for such situations, i.e. child harnesses. I don’ t care what that sounds like, or what it looks like, its for the child’s safety. Having said that, I wonder if there is any video evidence.

You obviously don‘t have a child that’s a runner. Yes, I used a harness on my son, but it took a while for me to realize I needed one. Plus, the child was 18 months old, so he’s just walking and it said some distance away, it didn’t say half way across the lobby. And once you get a harness, you have to deal with people telling you you’re treating your child like an animal. Try having a Down Syndrome/autistic child on a harness and see the comments you get. It ain’t that easy. Ms Labelle is a demon, and the couple was probably white. The White House had made it ok to abuse white people if you’re black. The military cadet was white. She‘s a diva who thinks she’s above all the little people and needs to be taught a lesson. I’d sue for a LARGE amount and then donate it to charity, except for my expenses.

Labelle said years ago that she lost a ton of weight by abandoning her traditional post-concert beer. I remember thinking, at the time, that that decision was as much about gaining control of her weight as it was her alcohol consumption.

    I wonder if she’s having trouble…

I’m sick of hearing one side of the story. In this article, they have LaBelle sounding like an enraged ape with no conscious whatsoever. What did they say to her to get such an reaction? Furthermore, if you’re a parent, why are you letting your child wander away from you in a high volume traffic area, where it could be trampled by some unsuspecting adult? Worse yet, with the number of children disappearing over the last 10-15 years, the last thing you should ever do is allow your toddler to be out of reach, where somebody can scoop it up and vanish. And let’s not delude ourselves into thinking the parents were in the right to tell somebody to mind their own business. about 9 years ago,

Short story time, grab your binki…I was almost in an accident with another car in a parking lot, where we both backed into each other at the same time. A young teenage mother and her friends witnessed what happened. After the driver and I had a small discussion, guess who decided to make their toddler walk up to the mall’s door? unbeknownst to me, I attempted to back up only to hear cursing from a female. The idiot allowed her child to wander near my bumper. Yeah, as if I can see a 2ft nothing child in my mirrors. As I eventually got out of my parking space, I told her to pick her child up and get the hell on. More attitude ensued. I swear I nearly lost it dealing with her.

It takes all kinds in this world…

So, in other words, your mother sucked? Perhaps we should have gotten Social Services involved when you were born, then maybe you wouldn’t believe you know everything about everything when it comes to parenting. I’d like to know when parenting comes with a handbook. I’m sure that handbook will be written by experts who have never been parents and a few parents who actually look at themselves as perfect. No one’s perfect Apple, get over it.

You are right…. It was clear in that video that he had no intention of
getting into her Limo, he was not using racial slurs he was on the
phone when they came over and attacked. They said he was drunk
and as a result West Point put him on active duty and he is having
to go to war. I think they found out he was not drunk but his orders
