Leaked Memo Reveals White House Distress: Why Don’t Schools Want Obama to Speak?

Last year, the White House received applications from more than 1,000 schools in a competition to secure a commencement address from President Barack Obama. But just one year later, it seems schools have lost interest.
A leaked internal White House memo reveals the Obama administration is scrambling to ramp its “Race to the Top Commencement Challenge,” facing a serious shortage of applicants less than one week before the deadline. CBS News reports:
The competition was extended from the February 25 deadline until Friday, March 11 after few schools met the original application deadline. CBS News has learned a White House Communications Office internal memo dated February 22 noted “a major issue with the Commencement Challenge.”
“As of yesterday we had received 14 applications and the deadline is Friday,” the memo said. The memo also urged recipients to, “please keep the application number close hold.”
A follow-up memo on February 28 reported receipt of 68 applications. Noting the competition among more than 1,000 schools last year, the memo said, “Something isn’t working.“ It called on staffers to ask ”friendly congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral offices” to encourage schools to apply.
“We should also make sure the Cabinet is pushing the competition out to their lists,” the memo said. The note reiterated, “We do not want the actual application number out there (we didn’t release the number of applications we received last year until after the submission period)-so folks should not use it in their pitches.”
On Monday, officials declined to cite the number of applications received so far.
So what does it take to get the President of the United States to speak at your graduation?
The president will travel to the school that is judged to best prepare students for college and careers. The competition is part of Mr. Obama’s ultimate goal of making the U.S. the country with the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020.
The White House has released this video featuring a member of last year’s winning class to try and inspire schools to participate this year:
Administration officials were unable to explain the reason for the apparent lack of interest.
“It’s a huge opportunity for high schools to tell their story,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan told CBS Radio. Asked about the lagging application numbers, Duncan said, “Folks are working hard.“ He called on schools to ”put their best foot forward and join the competition.”
In addition, a press aide from the Department of Ed said the deadline was extended “to provide an ample amount of time to reach out to schools from across the country… Like last year, we anticipate the overwhelming majority will be submitted near the close of the Challenge.”
The new deadline for schools to apply is 11:59 p.m. (ET), March 11.

Posted on March 8, 2011 at 12:43amJust because we could have a high number of college graduates DOES NOT mean that we have educated our youth. Now I’m sure Obama would love to see all kids be indoctrinated in college by their progressive/marxist professors, and I wonder if that’s not his real goal. But, I would much rather see more emphasis be put on improving our public school systems. High School should be the perfect place to teach our kids how to think. Please note what I wrote, cause I want kids to be taught how to think for themselves and NOT be told what to think!!!

Posted on March 8, 2011 at 5:03pmHave you taken a look at the application form? It is quite extensive, requesting three years of school “report cards”, various statistics, and has many essay questions:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/webform/commencement-challenge-2011
It would be non-trivial for a school to assemble the information needed – I’d imagine a couple hours, plus the effort to review and make sure all the info is correct, and for what? So that you can spend hours and hours working with the Secret Service to make the venue secure, get whatever is needed to secure the area to meet the SS requests, and to make school records available to the White House for review, all for a 20 minute presidential campaign speech by one of the more partisan presidents I can remember (“Elections have consequences”)…
Oh, and all this as every school district around the country is facing budget cuts, trying to balance their local budgets – they are a bit, how would you say it, “pre-occupied” at the moment…

Posted on March 8, 2011 at 6:32pmUm. Might I point out that perhaps the criteria for the competition is just too demanding? Or simply NOT permitted to exist at all?
“The president will travel to the school that is judged to best prepare students for college and careers.”
Since school teachers are taught (in college) social justice/equality/socialism-and are attempting to infiltrate their curriculum with it, how on earth can they justify participating in a CONTEST in which only ONE school WINS? Not to mention that the best way to prepare students for college is to teach them how to learn, how to study, how to take tests, how to work hard, etc and the best way to prepare them for careers is to teach them be on time, work hard, take orders, accept criticism, set goals, and apply themselves.
Just how many high schools does the White House think still operate under that ideal?

Here’s last years finalists if anyone is interested:
* Blue Valley Northwest High School, Overland Park, KS
* Clark Montessori, Cincinnati, OH
* Denver School of Science and Technology, Denver, Colorado
* Environmental Charter High School, Lawndale, CA
* Kalamazoo Central High School, Kalamazoo, MI
* MAST Academy, Miami, FL
Interesting….
Report Post »2 incredibly well run “normal” public high schools (both in the Midwest)
One Montesorri school-with an interesting view of curriculum-and limited enrollment
One DSST school-that focuses on liberal arts through science and technology? Limited enrollment. Interesting list of donors too.
A “green” Charter School-limited enrollment, not overseen by public school district, only 20% of their school teachers are National Board Certified.
MAST Academy is a lottery style “Choice” school where applicants must “qualify” under specific criteria in order to be put in the lottery to join the school.

Posted on March 8, 2011 at 8:37pmHell no we don’t! My brother and I have had to call my nephews school and yell at them for a History and Sociology teacher that feels it’s okay to teach his Liberal OPINION to the students. He actually told them that anybody who didn’t want the Mosque at Ground Zero was wrong. Luckily, my nephew started a Republican club at his high school as a freshman and doesn’t buy this claptrap. However, we have had to explain to him that most Politicians and the Government aren’t to be trusted (both sides) and that he should use his own mind,in the TRUE American fashion!

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 2:40pmThis is a president who has chosen to leave Kevin Jennings remain his “Safe School Czar” in spite of his dubious past. Jennings previously organized a gay/lesbian children education organization and gave a keynote speech on teaching children about fisting at Tufts University. This president seems to have very low standards for his education department. Besides, what if he couldn’t make a speaking engagement and sent Jennings instead?

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 5:26pmThats the truth of it Showtime. The Wittless House has under estimated the parents of this country. We know what this fool is up to and have been telling and showing our kids for two years. You may have brainwashed the current post high school era, but you wont get the next generation without a fight. And guess who is winning that fight? We arent like ghetto parents. We care, and we are there.
