Left Nearly Silent on Fatwa-Endorsing Singer‘s ’Sanity’ Rally Performance

It seem the liberal news/blog sites may not know quite what to say about Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s decision to feature Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) at the “Restoring Sanity” rally.
Islam was brought on to sing his most well known song — “Peace Train” — in a running battle with Ozzy Osbourne. Comedically this worked, er, not all that great.
As an idealogical move it was even worse. At least Mediaite noted the evident issue:
The inclusion of Yusuf Islam in the Rally to Restore Sanity is sure to raise a number of eyebrows, given the controversy surrounding his alleged support of the fundamentalist Islamic fatwa against author Salman Rushdie. As Andy Levy tweeted “Rally To Restore Fatwas?” Yusuf has since asserted that he was simply joking and his comments were taken out of context. In the years that has followed, he has repeatedly denied ever calling for the death of Rushdie or supporting the fatwa.
Yusuf Islam’s current version of his feelings may not quite square with the fact. A YouTube video of Islam’s original remarks (in 1989) was, of course, yanked by YouTube. Ed Driscoll has an excellent post with the original video here. And Ed Morrisey has another one.
Here’s a transcript of the key section from the 1989 TV program:
Robertson: You don’t think that this man deserves to die?
Y. Islam: Who, Salman Rushdie?
Robertson: Yes.
Y. Islam: Yes, yes.
Robertson: And do you have a duty to be his executioner?
Y. Islam: Uh, no, not necessarily, unless we were in an Islamic state and I was ordered by a judge or by the authority to carry out such an act – perhaps, yes.[Some minutes later, Robertson on the subject of an protest where an effigy of the author is to be burned]
Robertson: Would you be part of that protest, Yusuf Islam, would you go to a demonstration where you knew that an effigy was going to be burned?
Y. Islam: I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing
Morrissey notes that The New York Times, at the time, that the singer didn’t back down from his remarks:
The musician known as Cat Stevens said in a British television program to be broadcast next week that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ”I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing.”
The singer, who adopted the name Yusuf Islam when he converted to Islam, made the remark during a panel discussion of British reactions to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s call for Mr. Rushdie to be killed for allegedly blaspheming Islam in his best-selling novel ”The Satanic Verses.” He also said that if Mr. Rushdie turned up at his doorstep looking for help, ”I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like.”
”I’d try to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is,” said Mr. Islam, who watched a preview of the program today and said in an interview that he stood by his comments.
The Telegraph is featuring this reenactment of Islam’s remarks:
The Telegraph also notes the Salman Rushdie wrote to the paper in 2007 about Islam’s views:
Cat Stevens wanted me dead
However much Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam may wish to rewrite his past, he was neither misunderstood nor misquoted over his views on the Khomeini fatwa against The Satanic Verses (Seven, April 29). In an article in The New York Times on May 22, 1989, Craig R Whitney reported Stevens/Islam saying on a British television programme “that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ‘I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing’.”
He added that “if Mr Rushdie turned up at his doorstep looking for help, ‘I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like. I’d try to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is’.”
In a subsequent interview with The New York Times, Mr Whitney added, Stevens/Islam, who had seen a preview of the programme, said that he “stood by his comments”.
Let’s have no more rubbish about how “green” and innocent this man was.
Salman Rushdie, New York
All of this is far from “sanity” to Morrissey:
What I find amazing about this is that two stars from Comedy Central would share the stage with a man who supported the idea of murdering an artist for his remarks on Islam. The producers of South Park got death threats from radical Muslims for attempting to depict an image of Muhammed in one of their recent episodes, and the executive management of Viacom forced them to censor the show in fear of Muslim reaction. Now, two of Viacom’s most recognizable television stars have linked themselves to a man who publicly endorsed that exact kind of threat — as a way to “restore sanity.”
But I could find barely a mention of the issue on liberal sites. Except Talking Points Memo:
Rankles? Yep, that’s pretty much all they had to say about it. TPM notes the controversy and includes Islams mollifications:
Since then, he has strenuously insisted that he does not support the fatwa and never did, though he strongly criticizes Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses.
“I never called for the death of Salman Rushdie; nor backed the Fatwa issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini–and still don’t,” he wrote. “The book itself destroyed the harmony between peoples and created an unnecessary international crisis.”
Rank me as rankled.

Posted on October 31, 2010 at 10:49amI wish someone would provide the left with a teachable moment on the subject of taqiyya . If Yusuf Islam (like Paul , Cat is dead) is even half the devout “ The Religion of Peace” (SARCASM) disciple he claims to be, he will no doubt know about the idea of lying to the infidels. A shame the left seems all too happy to cozy up to the TROPites. Then again, they both despise America .

Posted on October 31, 2010 at 3:11pmI think it was interesting that he was supposed to sing “Peace Train”, but as a Muslim, he would commit fatwa if ordered to do so. To get around this, they worked it so he was interrupted by Ozzie Osbourne and couldn’t finish the song. It was supposed to be funny, just like Islam is supposed to be a religion of peace. The “skit”, if you want to call it that, wasn‘t funny and Islam isn’t peaceful.
Nice try, better luck next time.

Posted on October 31, 2010 at 12:48pmIt‘s very interesting that Steven’s was allowed entry into the US in the first place. Let’s not forget September 2004; he was turned away by FBI-Washington after his plane had landed there.
The guardian.co.uk archives holds a statement from Mr. Islam that he made in regard to the event shortly afterward: “I want to make sure that people are aware that I’ve never ever knowingly supported any terrorist groups past, present or future.”
Focus in on the ambiguity in the phrase “knowingly supported.” This purposeful ambiguity, or rather an emergency escape route from the truth, is the rhetorical mechanism that shields Muslims from ever admitting guilt in anything they involve themselves in. You cannot be guilty of something you did not know of; or rather that you choose to not know . . . Translation: you are ignorant of the events that you turn your back on so as not to witness heinous crimes you choose not to acknowledge or to have any memory of.
But then, it shouldn’t come as any shock to anyone that liberals would put on display Mr. Islam as he is a champion of their embracement of such mastery in rhetorical skills. Certainly we see Obama liberals have feebly attempted what Mr. Islam has accomplished in their trying to keep blood off their hands while slitting the throat of our Republic. But we should give credit where credit is due, as one could make an argument that Bill Clinton mastered the skill set long before Obama finished his first read of Bill Ayers’ masterful works, of rhetorical devices, undermining and overall corruption. And keeping in that fashion, should Obama liberals ever be brought to any moral or legal justice beyond the voting booth, be assured that Clinton despite his current show of support will find a wealth of ambiguity to stand his innocence on, that he never ever knowingly supported any Obama notion of socialism or general ill repute.
Importantly, let’s properly frame the significance of Mr. Islam making his presence known at a liberal rally: Mr. Islam, his mere physical presence, standing on US soil, is a victory for liberalism. He signifies a certain door has been forced open and that they are holding a foot inside. Quietly, they have been working on this one for a long time . . . the return of the ambiguous Cat Stevens- the artist . . . Mr. Islam, an ally of sorts.

Report Post »Peters
Posted on October 31, 2010 at 2:15pmOn a much related side note: Liberals having Mr. Islam appear before them stands as a stark contradiction to their overly malleable views on the First Amendment.
Certainly liberal’s primary attitude for Stevens is that his voice has a right to be heard as does his religion. And it must be quickly pointed out that we absolutely agree. This Mr. Islam and any Mr. Islam does in fact have the rights our culture affords them. That he is not a US citizen matters not in that context. Our beliefs are applicable to all men and women regardless of the real estate that they may occupy. But it should be pointed out that the United States, unlike much of the Muslim world, guarantees this right by the rule of law. By his own words and actions, and in contradiction, it is Mr. Islam that does not. He wants his right to be heard and his religion and culture to be honored while his religion advocates the silencing of all other religions. Mr. Islam after all, the infamous Cat Stevens, did call for the execution of another artist, the silencing of his voice and of his opinions, all the while espousing the superiority of his own.
When you put into context then the contradictions of Cat Stevens you also can’t avoid seeing the modern Democratic Party, modern liberalism, blind support for inevitable tyranny standing before him in mass of 150 thousand.

It is a travesty of the First Amendment to allow religious hate speech. Advocating death fatwas and Sharia law should not be protected speech, just like speech that calls for the killing or discrimination of blacks is censored. Wikipedia defines HATE SPEECH as follows:
“In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or BY a protected individual or group…” [emphasis mine]
Racial hate speech was not criminalized until our government exposed it as a threat to our constitutional freedoms. However, liberals (and many conservatives) refuse to do the same vis-à-vis Islam. They vehemently deny the imperialistic nature of MAINSTREAM Islam, i.e., its foundational concept of Islamization, and therefore refuse to identify Islam as a threat to capitalism/democracy. Consequently, Islamization is taking place throughout America under the protection of the First Amendment, and at an accelerated rate since Obama took office. The redefinition of NASA to favor the recruitment of Muslims, and the celebration of Ramadan in lieu of our Christian National Day of Prayer are just two examples of how Muslim-born Obama is actively supporting the Islamization of America.
