Leftist Christian Leader Jim Wallis: Occupy Wall Street Protesters ‘Stand With Jesus’

Leftist Christian Leader Jim Wallis Offers Praise to Occupy Wall Street

As the Occupy Wall Street movement has both spread and intensified, there have been many intriguing — even disturbing — stories that have emerged and gained precedence. But one angle that few have covered is how the leftist faith community is responding to the protests.

As you know, over the past year, The Blaze has spent a great deal of time highlighting how the left is using faith and religion as a tool to rally adherents to political causes. Today, we will begin looking at how Sojourners, led by Jim Wallis, is already sinking its teeth into the Wall Street debacle.

In an article entitled, “Praying for Peace and Looking for Jesus at #OccupyWallStreet,” Wallis offered his support for the Wall Street protesters — going just far enough in his piece to back their efforts and to encourage their antics without officially endorsing them. He wrote:

The new movement called Occupy Wall Street now has spread across the country, from the very seats of our political and financial power and our largest cities, to suburbs and small towns…

In each instance…people’s frustrations, hurts, and feelings of being betrayed by our nation’s politicians and economic leaders are clear. They want to be heard.

Leftist Christian Leader Jim Wallis Offers Praise to Occupy Wall StreetDespite these comments, Wallis is careful to write that there is a great deal that he still doesn’t know about the movement. He also contends that there are elements of the protest that will inspire and others that will offend, but he says, “that’s OK.”

In Wallis’ view, Occupy Wall Street has “caught the imagination of a generation — and that matters.” In speaking about what he does know about the protesters, he writes:

When they stand with the poor, they stand with Jesus.

When they stand with the hungry, they stand with Jesus.

When they stand for those without a job or a home, they stand with Jesus. [...]

When they talk about holding banks and corporations accountable, they sound like Jesus and the biblical prophets before him who all spoke about holding the wealthy and powerful accountable.

Now, it’s important to hold the powerful accountable. Wallis isn’t incorrect there. In fact, the conservative movement, which has grave concerns about the government’s size and scope, is often working toward this same goal. Both sides of the aisle, in their own ways, seek to hold powers that be to a higher standard.

But doesn’t the Bible also speak about personal responsibility, the power of negative decisions and the like? Wallis is certainly correct that those who wish to help the poor and hungry (in terms of volunteering at soup kitchens and other associated activities) are acting out in a way that the Bible will command them to, but the issue here isn’t simply about the poor; it’s about the extent to which businesses and government should be blamed for social and political problems.

Nowhere in his article does Wallis address the other side of this debate — the one that deals with individuals’ decisions to take out loans and to engage in other consumer behaviors. Plus, the protesters have made it clear that this is about “revolution not reform.” Is this something that Wallis, too, would be willing to endorse as being rooted in Biblical principle?

As one reads on, though, it becomes more clear what he was attempting to accomplish. Delving into unemployment, foreclosure and hunger, the leftist preacher coveres issues of concern for people on both sides of the political aisle. Certainly, the situation in America is difficult for a great many. But as Wallis continues his list, describing all that is wrong in America, his purpose becomes clearer:

…college students who have tens of thousands of dollars in loans and can’t find a job.

Families that have lost their homes in bank foreclosures, and the tens of millions of people who live below the poverty line even though they HAVE jobs. [...]

The institutions and systems — whether business or government — meant to serve the people, seem beyond the reach of basic human kindness and completely unaccountable.

And the ever-widening gap between the very top one percent who control more wealth than the bottom 99 percent is a recipe for disastrous social instability and unrest.

As the piece unravels, Wallis seems more and more supportive of the protesters. In fact, he even encourages “church folks” to bring them casserole, to talk with them and to offer up “the sacred gifts of hospitality, company, and friendship.”

“The Occupiers’ desire for change and willingness to take action to do something about it should be an inspiration to us all,” Wallace writes. According to his Twitter feed, Wallis visited the protest on Thursday:

Leftist Christian Leader Jim Wallis Offers Praise to Occupy Wall Street

While Wallis seems to be playing a bit coy about how much he supports these protests, the communications director for Sojourners, Tim King, has actually joined in on the festivities — literally. Christianity Today has more:

He is sleeping in the park and blogging about his experiences. He said one of his goals is to look for God’s presence amidst the event.

“I believe it’s often easier to find God on the streets than in a sanctuary,” King said. “We serve a God who shows up for those in need, and for those who stand with them.”

He reported that there are Christians at the event and that many of the protesters are open to religion.

King said, “Many protesters here have had some bad experiences with religion, but it’s clear that they are genuinely open to seeing religion done differently.”

And here’s a photo montage that was created for Sojourners (and published on the group’s blog), which features images, along with dramatic music, seemingly praising the Occupy D.C. rally:

Considering Wallis’ past support for the redistribution of wealth, it’s hard to imagine him writing anything negative about the protesters. The Blaze will continue to monitor how Wallis, among other leftist religious leaders, responds to the Occupy Wall Street protests.

Indeed, and as one pastor speaking about the actions of others, this is far from common what Wallis is doing; the matter is fairly simple — he has traded the glory of the Almighty and preaching His word to the world as guided by the Spirit; for the glories of this world and the short time they will last when compared to the eternal kingdom of the next world.

It can also be summed up as: Wallis has traded his passion of God for the glory of the world.

Hey buddy, it would help if you opened your Bible as least one time to try and come to your conclusions about Jesus. You mock Jesus in every word that comes out of your mouth. By claiming to know Him and support Him you blaspheme God himself. You are a disgrace. You use God and Jesus Christ as a tool to achieve your political goals you evil SOB. As the Bible says…..

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” Matthew 7:15

You prey on people who don‘t know God’s word and manipulate them to add to your foot soldiers for a socialist revolution. You don’t ask people to stand with God. You ask people to stand for a political agenda driven by socialist ideology and USE GOD as a cloak to get it done!! EVIL SOB

The left who hats any notion of God or religion acts so fast to coopt God or Jesus into their plans. Why not coopt Muhammed, Budha? Because those are false Gods and they know it, so they give themselves away a bit here by giving Jesus some credibility. They should also note some of the other things he said about those who pay him lip service but their hearts are far from him or I like the one where he calls them hipocrites because they act so pious in front of the people but their hearts are like tombs full of dead mens bones.

Someday Jesus WILL rule the nations. A global monarchy. And even under the reign of JESUS, there will be gullible rebellious people who will be decieved into a “popular uprising” against His kingdom. Jim Wallis, these people are NOT protesting for compassion, they are protesting for the COMMUNIST OVERTHROW OF AMERICA. Please revisit Romans 13, and stop playing religious games.

Or maybe I just missed the parts here Jesus called on Caesar to confiscate more wealth from the “rich” and give it to the poor. How does Wallis explain the parable Jesus taught about the men being hired in the vineyard at the end of the day getting paid the same as the guys getting hired at the beginning of it? Matt. 20:1-16

Now Obama has decided to take out Wall Street. This is a big back lash from Obama. @ TH30PH1LUS Jesus is reigning now(1 Cor. 15:25). When He comes back it will be the Judgment Day, no millennial reign, no big war with a literal dragon or a literal beast. Revelation is meant to be read symbolically and it was for the 1st century Christians to warn them about the fall of Jerusalem and those who fled were spared (the flight to Pella) and those who overcame (sin/the world/held to the faith) would have a crown of life (that’s the application for us today). The Lord’s church is the kingdom
      Luke 16:16 “The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 1 Thessalonians 2:12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. 2 Thessalonians 1:5 which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer;

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.

Snowleopard {gallery of cat folks}, I see that you actually read Wallis’ article and you struggling with your own beliefs. That’s my perception, but surely you are free to contradict me.

You says, “Indeed, and as one pastor speaking about the actions of others, this is far from common what Wallis is doing“ Did Jesus worry about being ”far from common”? Did Jesus not “stand with the poor?”

Snow, your language is enigmatic. That doesn’t make it profound, any more than the ambigious statements of the Delphic Oracle. That just makes it meaningless.

You says, “It can also be summed up as: Indeed, and as one pastor speaking about the actions of others, this is far from common what Wallis is doing; the matter is fairly simple — he has traded the glory of the Almighty and preaching His word to the world as guided by the Spirit; for the glories of this world and the short time they will last when compared to the eternal kingdom of the next world.

It can also be summed up as: Wallis has traded his passion of God for the glory of the world.” Not sure exactly what that means, but IMO Jesus taught us to behave on Earth as we would in Heaven. That means not supporting, as conservative Christians would have it, the the exact opposite of Christ’s teachings: depriving and reducing the help our Christian nation provides to the poor and helpless in order to offset the cost of channeling more money to the rich.

      Good luck with your idea.

In the end, blinded by their own shadows and self-interests, they stumble into the revelations of truth and light, and are found accountable for their deeds made manifest to all.

Jim Wallis and everythng he believes is a fraud and not based on the Christian Gospel but the gospel of Karl Marx. If he ever knew any Christian teachings he’s forgotten them. The Christian Scriptures tell us that Jesus said to render unto Ceasar the things that are of Caesar and to God the things that are God’s—-it seems that Willis had combined the two. He thinks that the State is God and that Ceasat is His manifestation. He better learn that one day he may have to choose between the two–and soon.

Actually “creepy” is not quite the right wording, though a good one.

What we see in Wallis, as with Obama, Reid, Pelosi and even Van Jones is the various faces of evil and darkness made manifest on the world and in the world.

Just as those who belong to the family of God are tried by truth and fire, to grow more and more into the spiritual likeness of God and His Son, so those who are children of the devil develop aspects of their master, old Lucifer himself.

Mind you, I use the old name for the Devil, to let everyone know exactly who I am talking about. The term “Devil” nowdays has become a kind of cliche such as “devil in the details, devil made me do it..” to where the the true understanding of WHO and WHAT it personifies and embodies has been all but forgotten.

I do not wish to sound so judgmental but, based on what Wallis says, I would suspect that if he met Jesus he would not recognize Him, nor would Christ “know” Wallis as one of His own. When a man invokes the name of the Father or the Son for an earthly purpose, especially political and economic, flee from him. Christ has already spoken for Himself and there is nothing of Him in these protests.

As a Christian I do understand that we are to faithfully help those who are poor and suffering. We are to give charitably. It is not a political issue and we should remember that God will bring judgment on those who are able to help the poor but do not. The judgment that Wallace wants to see is for God not for man.

      DSM,
May I just say that Jim Wallis is NOT a disgrace to Christianity? He is a disgrace to HUMANITY!
He is a propagandist. He is the cliched “Wolf in Sheep’s clothing”.

The young Sheeple attending “Days of Rage” protests around the country are being used by aged 60′s PROGRESSIVE radicals to finally achieve their dream…,the dream that NEVER died for them.
Their dream is the end of the United States of America.

While watching this ludicrous photo montage, I felt like Joplin ,Buffy St. Marie, Dylan, Hendrix, and all the other 60′s abettors (their heyday was really late 60‘s to mid 70’s ), would pop up whining…, “Give Peace A Chance”, while stuffing their “HIPPIE” pockets with “CAPITALIST” millions. UGH!

And what did the 60′s era accomplish? Hmm., Let’s see…,the brutal deaths of millions in Cambodia, Laos, and S. Vietnam because, boo hoo…,“War is bad for children and other living things”.
The derision of American Soldiers who did nothing more than fight the war they were DRAFTED to fight. It goes on. None of it is positive. NONE of it. It was a horrible decade. We’re now finding out that it never really went away. These 60′s COCKROACHES had just scurried back under the surbases waiting and planning.
Just as the little girl in the movie Poltergeist said,”THEY’RE BACK”.

The banks messed up but their masters are in the congress and the bureaucratic entities that force goofy things onto them like NINJA loans.(No Income No Job) Bush 43 needs to be mentioned also since he was in agreement to raising the fraction of non-performing or poor performing loans from Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac from 50 to 56%. This poisonous paper was peddled globally as triple A paper. That is why we had to bail out not only our own banks but the foreign banks that accepted the bad paper. @Marengo:

Here is the crux of the matter, Christ himself said the two phrases:

“Do not judge lest you be judged in turn.“ and ”By their fruits you shall know them.”

This is a topic I have studied about and prayed for guidance and clarification on for years; and have come to this much so far — it is the INDIVIDUAL PERSON, we are not to judge as we all are sinners before God, unless redeemed by our acceptance of Lord Jesus.

The thing is though, the DEEDS and ACTIONS of the individual, and that includes each of us as well, are to be called into notice…look at the actions of the Apostles, and of John the Baptist, along with those of Christ…they did not condemn the individual, only the actions they did, as Christ so often had to remind his own followers of until they finally understood the truth of the messages.

This is one of the hardest actions for all of us to do, seperate the person themselves from their deeds, for we are to love the sinner (to show him/her/them Gods mercy and grace at work), and not love the sin that they do.

I freely and openly admit to having much more changes needed in my life — especially my temper, and when I do lose it in the least, expect to openly be called to task for that moment of lapse on my part — I do the deed, I accept the consequences.

I hope this can clarify it some.

The word judge in the Hebrew is to Condemn (to hell) or death. We have had that word used against us in the wrong way for way to long. We are to be discerning of what is evil. Jesus surely was and so was Paul who was not God. If we looked at it only in the terms you think judging means then no one could make any decision to do what is right for any given reasons because one would be judging. I judge you to be a fool at this point until you prove otherwise. How bout that!

I live in a small town of 800. Went to the little grocery store yesterday and found two wall clocks proudly displayed for sale. The picture on the clocks was Che Guevara. When I expressed my horror at it being sold here, the young lady, whose South Korean family had recently immigrated here, and purchased the little store, expressed her pride in Che. I am going back today to ask the parents if they would be so willing to sell their daughter’s clocks if they praised Kim Jong Il.

Here’s a thought: mind your own business and try not to tell others how to manage their affairs. For a group of people who believe that capitolism is some holy institution from on-high, you have no problems getting in peoples‘ faces and telling them how they ’ought to be.’ In a capitolist system, you vote with your dollar, so there’s a simple solution: don’t buy the clock.

wallis better hope JESUS doesn’t show up. If HE does, it will be the second clearing of the temple and the leaders will run over each other to escape the LIGHT.

That could be a GOOD, GOD thing in that the followers might at last SEE THE LIGHT and KNOW THE TRUTH. Then the tide would turn toward JESUS AND GOD.

    That’ll work.

Know that many of us are praying daily, hourly, minute by minute for GOD‘s intervention in your plans and especially standing on SCRIPTURE and GOD’S PROMISES for and against you.

Men like Mr. Wallis are nothing more than liars who go about trying assuage the guilt of those who claim to be Christ-like and instead are doing the work of Satan.
