Leftist Protesters ‘Boo’ During National Anthem at Madison Tea Party Rally

Demonstrators from both the Tea Party and the left showed up in droves in Madison, WI on Saturday to attend a rally featuring Sarah Palin. The Associated Press covered the clashes:
Capitol Police estimated about 6,500 people converged on the building Saturday, but said it was impossible to tell how many were tea partyers and how many were labor supporters. The Capitol Police is a division of the Wisconsin Department of Administration, a Walker cabinet agency.
The tea partyers appeared clustered in front of the building, waving “Don’t Tread on Me“ flags and signs that read ”Public workers—the party is over,“ ”Thank you, Scott,“ and ”Tax and spend brings the end.”
Counter-protesters surrounded them, banging drums, bellowing into bullhorns and ringing bells. Bitter arguments broke out along the edges of the two groups over everything from the size of government to corporate power.
That’s old news by now. But what you may not have heard is that the leftist, union protesters seem to have mirrored the attitude of their counterparts thousands of miles away in Oregon — they booed during the patriotic gesture known as the National Anthem:
As the video shows, it seems the protesters eventually wised up to their actions and joined in. Eventually. Not before shaking their noise-makers, shouting, and holding up their signs:
But Ann Althouse over at her blog says the booing may not have been as overtly disrespectful as it seems:
I don’t have my own video, because I mishandled the button on my camera, but I was right behind the Tea Party crowd amid anti-Tea Party protesters who were making a lot of noise trying to drown out whatever was coming from the podium. They were, in fact, succeeding in their purpose so well that they could not hear when the national anthem began.
I started walking forward and it took a while for me to recognize the anthem. My observation was that those who could hear it were not booing. The “rockets red glare” line seemed louder, and there was a noticeable hushing that extended back into the anti-Tea Party areas of the crowd.

Outdoors, yesterday, the acoustics were distorted, the anthem began unexpectedly, and the noisemakers were into their thing, drowning out the tea partiers. You cannot infer disrespect for the national anthem.

All the Tea Partiers are known for are nice peaceful rally’s the park mark by everyone in attendance having colorful signs and picking up all their trash before they leave. Big Woop! That’s it. Blah…blah…blah….Get ready because the leftist union SEIU types will start showing up at all the Tea Party rally’s and causing disruptions, starting physical attacks, and eventually chaos. Do the Tea PArty folks every trash the SEIU and/or union rallys? Not. The time has come to physically take a stand…and if you want results it is going to cost in terms of time, money, physical attacks, maybe jail time (because they want send the SEIU folks to jail…just you and me), prosecutions, etc. The days of everyone packing a nice picnic basket and going to the park to hear someone speak and sing kumbaya together are gone. What I want to see is if the Tea PArtiers are willing to attend a rally of they know there is going to be a physical confrontation with the Progressives thugs. Bottom line…it is going to cost each and everyone of us something from this point forward. The progressives are willing to do whatever it takes to win. Question is ARE WE? I was raised in a southern baptist church and for the first twenty years of my life I would have never DARED to think things like that, much less write them down. I also believe Jesus was a real person who lived and died. But we know nothing about the afterlife, if there even is one. The Bible was written by human hands. No one knows why we’re here, what outer space even is or what happens when we die. Instinct tells all living things to fear death, to attempt to avoid or delay it.

I want to believe in it like I used to. I want to think that we go on, that when my loved ones die that I’ll get to see them again. But I don’t. I still believe in God. I guess that‘s a conflict I’m still working on.
You talk about America and having liberties and freedoms here but most christians are fine with laws being passed that force people to live by what they believe. it’s hypocritical and destroys the credibility of the religion.

But we’re not. It’s a weak argument to say that the acoustics were bad, so they couldn’t hear. I could hear the singing in the video, and that camera was clearly in the midst of the same noise and distraction as anyone standing there.
Neither does it make them look any better that they were making so much noise merely for the purpose of being distracting and disruptive toward another groups exercise of Free Speech. The act itself is childish, and merely illustrates the fact that, since they’ve run out of (or rather, never had) sensible arguments for their position, they had to resort to acts of foolishness and generally disrespectful behavior in order to “prove their point”.
They meant what they were doing, and only stoped their behavior when they realized that it might actually get caught on tape and expose them for what they really were. They only ceased their act once they realized it could make them look bad, not due to any sense of pride for our history or our values.

Posted on April 18, 2011 at 2:03amI’m really tired of all this self-righteous patriotism from the Right–if the Right REALLY cared about America, 1) The wouldn’t send our military into conflict so readily, 2) They wouldn’t support policy that only benefits those making over 250 K (literally a minority), 3) They would care more about threats to this country’s natural and human resources and its infrastructure, and they would take steps to safeguard it not undercut it
I’m a Socialist and I love my country. But for me, that means forcing myself to take a hard and objective look at the facts facing it and choosing to work towards whats best for my country and what’s the right thing to do. And unfortunately, this is not an easy undertaking, as any one regardless of political affiliation will tell you right now–the’re disappointed with the status quo.
As such, my patriotism is grounded in practicality–I care about my country because I care about the fate of its people. and as such my politics naturally reflects this concern; I want America’s troops to be the best equipped and provided for (i.e. education and training, medical, etc.) and I violent conflicts to be avoided in all but the truly morally just applications because no American should ever die so that another (or even worse a foreigner) might profit. I am also abhorred by the numbers of my countrymen that are taken, held hostage, deprived of liberty, and in many cases murdered, for the silliest and most trivial violations of law. Our State accounts for 4% of the worlds population, yet we hold more than 20% of it prisoners; at a certain point, one must begin to question whether there’s more than just a “bad people” at work here (something I think is a fundamental mis characterization of the American people). Of these prisoners, a disproportionate number are black men, sent there for minor drug offenses. We waste money robbing our most vulnerable citizens of the opportunities to gain skills and gainful employment only further entrench them within a society of criminality when our response to drug use in impoverished communities is to imprison entire generations of black men. This is an outrageous atrocity and it cannot be allowed to continue; America cannot afford for it to continue. For that matter, America can no longer afford a great deal of the partisan moral policing it currently does–for the sake of domestic peace, for save of moral justice, and for to sake of fiscal prudence, this division and senseless bickering must be put aside. Our border is not secure, presenting a clear and present threat to the American people, and why? Because the government refuses to penalize businesses which hire immigrant labor per head and at a rate which makes hiring their labor more expensive than paying the prevailing wage. Furthermore, the laws which govern entrance and citizenship to this country are so onerous, setting the bar for entry far above what even the average caliber of citizen could accomplish in an examination, that even those individuals who are of equal, or greater, merit than the average American are forced to go through extra-legal means of entry and existence in this country. I believe America is a country founded on cosmopolitanism, fairness and egalitarianism, not elitism–we are not the kind of country that should be saying “no vacancy,” we are the kind of country that always believes and strives for the highest of human potential and our immigration policy should reflect that. Furthermore, if the only people that remained who had a reason to extra-legally enter the U.S., they would be far easier to catch and isolate when most former illegals are now entering through document-able and screen-able entry. In other words, a more expansive immigration policy makes meeting our security burdens more manageable as threats are more easy to isolate. And what of the state of the economy? Yes, this too troubles me. But I care about it in terms that are significant and meaningful to every person who derives sustenance from the economy, not just capitalists who nominally “own’ it. The question of the justice of ownership (i.e. who is the “rightful” owner of the means of production) is a silly one–no one individual can honestly claim the productive powers of an entire corporation to be their doing, and so no one is really entitled to the private ownership of these productive powers. They are beyond the capacity of individuals to produce, and beyond the responsibility to manage. Nor is the State a sufficiently competent actor to act in this regard. Instead, ownership, responsibility, and control should ultimately fall to those who put their labor into the production of the product (i.e. workers). If we had such a worker’s democracy, and it were extended to the financial sector, I guarantee you we would not have seen people making such risky wagers with their own money as the banks were with theirs, and they certainly would not have speculated the real estate market into a bubble. We also would not be experiencing a credit crunch as people would be making enough on the value of their labor to buy the goods and services the economy needs them to buy in order to sustain itself at current output levels. The need and capacity to supply is drive by the aggregate demand of an economy for product. Demand is the capacity and desire to consume a good or service. Aggregate demand is responsible for the existence of the economy and for its growth. The richer you are, the less of your income you spend–think about it, it makes sense. The more money you have, the more things your can buy that you need/want, and the less each additional unit of money means to you in terms of value. Theoretically, you might hit a point where money is literally worthless because you’ve completely satisfied your demand, buying everything you could possibly want or need. Presumably, when the most wealthy of our society are no longer entitled to the lion’s share of the product on the basis of their status and ability to own the means of producing that product, but rather are forced to contribute, and receive for consumption, solely on the basis of the productive value of their input there will be a decrease in income disparity–and this should be a welcome change, as income disparity is not just an incidental effect, but it is the primary cause of the recurrent poverty and associated crime, the strain on public services, and the credit crunch and economic stagnation. If private individuals are allowed to own and rent the capital of society, then they shall do so only at the most exorbitant rates they can and the system is more profitable the fewer owners involved, so there is a natural incentive for collusion. And the result is that such a system will always tend towards a gradual concentration of capital and class stratification until the economy grinds to a halt and we’ve come full circle to feudalism. I do not think that this is a desirable fate for America, and I feel it is my political and civic duty to oppose it at every cost. That is why Socialists are the true patriots, and we hold the guard for this country against the cruel force of barbarism and tyranny.

See how secure, happy, and creative the people are. Try as many as you like. Go to the most “open society” socialist place you can think of. Take an extended leave of absence; go to Europe! The more socialist, the more the government “helps” in normal people’s daily lives, the more nervous insecurity there is. It’s human nature. People know that they themselves are not providing for themselves. They become scared of the future and insecure. And the “leaders” just feed the “security” lie to stay in power. The followers believe, and loudly sabotage their own self-worth.
Trouble is, these open socialist societies are all broke. Go and see for yourselves. Young people scramble to go through demeaning and often corrupt screening to get into government paid jobs. Those who don’t make it (and if you’re not “recommended” to a regular high school–at 13 or 14 years of age–you don’t make it…) sometimes turn out to be the lucky ones, having to create their own livlihoods, but often are left with no sense of confidence or self-worth.

When I win, if it is not to late I will bring all of our men and women home and place them on the borders (north and south) 250,000 north and 500,000 south. East and West Ports will consume the rest of the best. Lawyers and cheats need not apply.
I will surround myself with 10 of the smartest people in the world. Starting with the Vice Pres., jobs and the economy will be your job, Defense Alan West, the other eight will fall into place as a very short time passes. All of them Conservative Constitutionalists. Their pay will not exceed $60.000 per year and if they do not preform they will be replaced. No government employee will be paid more then the $60.000 per year until the budget is balanced. There are no exceptions to this rule. If the budget is not balanced within 2 years they will not be paid.
The tax reform will happen just as fast. A flat tax of 25% for everyone small and large business and the working class. No more loopholes.
Our military personnel will be paid first above everyone and they will get a bump in pay of 10% within two weeks of me being sworn into office. The same will go to our Vets. There are no exceptions to this rule. If at all possible that pay will rise again another 5% within the next two to three months.
Entitlement programs will remain the same. The age limit will rise to 65 after 2014 and 70 by 2018. Unions collective bargaining will be frozen at the 2010 level. Walkers plan will apply to all unions. If you are lazy, fat and stupid you can stay that way or work your way out. NO MORE BIG FLAT SCREEN T.V.’s for you unless you earn it.
All other issues will be determined according to their priorities.
Israel will remain our closest friend and if you attack them you are attacking The United States of America.
Iran’s nuclear program will end or they will feel the full extent of our power, no more debating.
North Korea falls in the same category.
Iraq will repay the U.S. in oil for their liberation. If not we will take it.
I know there is a lot more that needs to be thought through and that is why I will surround myself with the best of the best.
Lastly, all faiths are welcome but if you are a Communist, Socialist or Jihadist you will be out or jailed or shot, take your pick.

We agree to disagree and vote it out. But I truly believe that if you put them in a situation where someone was filming them just in case they did something outrageous they would do something outrageous because they were being filmed and didn’t want to be. I don’t like people filming me. I would be the crazy ranting tea-party guy if a camera was shoved in my face or just following me around.
Stop filming people and saying they are just going nuts. I KNOW SOME ARE ACTUALLY GOING NUTS, but most are just mad you’re filming them! Ever heard of ignoring a person so that they stop acting like a buffoon? Ignore them and VOTE!

We heard and recited the Pledge and then heard the beginning of the Anthem. Acoustics aside, you couldn’t miss the number of people reciting the Pledge. No excuse to be disrespectful.

The Leftist were yelling and banging to drown out the speakers and it wasn’t until the lyrics “the rockets’ red glare” or thereabouts that the Leftists realized that this was the singing of the national anthem. Then they became quiet. Many may have joined in the singing, although I’m not sure, because I was singing and those immediately around me were singing.
Were they respectful or disrespectful, I think, is a different question. The Leftist protesters were so angry and hostile that it would have taken a switch in energy for them to have sung the national anthem with reverence. So I’m not sure that they were exactly being “respectful” in the sense that I think the Tea Partiers were. But I am a witness that the yelling and noisemaking stopped when the Left realized the national anthem was being sung.
The yelling and banging started up again immediately, as soon as the song ended, and continued through every other part of the day. It was the most hostile and disrespectful I have ever seen a crowd of people act in person.
Andrew Breitbart said we are witnessing the death of community organizing. (Love him!) I agree that this is the conduct of people who know they have lost and are just trying to make it impossible for anyone else to function; very much like the way they lost the 2010 election and so shut down government for everyone else; very much like the way they lost the Supreme Court race and are trying to stall and obfuscate.
It was painful to see Americans keeping other Americans from assembling and hearing the speakers we wanted to hear. Thank God for the internet! I watched the videos later. Thank God for videos!
Next time, I’ll bring a smartphone and simultaneously live-stream the speeches so I can hear, no matter what the Left is doing.
I want to commend the Tea Party people, the guys especially, for peacefully putting up with all that insulting provocation. The Tea Partiers had the Gandhi energy. The Tea Partiers had the way of forbearance. The Teapartiers were the more Zen-like at the the event.
I think if the Left had quietly entered deep meditation about what they want and what they care about they would have done their cause more good. I don’t think most people would be drawn to their hostile energy.
Rock on, Americans. Self-government takes a lot of work and attention.

Did you know that MOST small businesses are run by individuals, making $250K?
