Leftist Writer Dupes Wis. Gov. Walker; Poses as Koch Brother During Trick Phone Call

A so-called journalist from the liberal website the Buffalo Beast in Buffalo, NY has just released a stunning piece of audio, in which the journalist poses as conservative financier David Koch and tries to bait Wis. Gov. Scott Walker into an embarrassing conversation. In the end, Walker doesn’t bite. The audio, then, may be most stunning not because of what Walkers says, but because of what the writer did.
Below is the call, recorded Tuesday and released today, in two parts:
The reporter, Ian Murphy, details how he got to the governor:
I first called at 11:30 am CST, and eventually got through to a young, male receptionist who, upon hearing the magic name Koch, immediately transferred me to Executive Assistant Governor Dorothy Moore.
“We’ve met before, Dorothy,” I nudged. “I really need to talk to Scott—Governor Walker.” She said that, yes, she thought she had met Koch, and that the name was “familiar.” But she insisted that Walker was detained in a meeting and couldn’t get away. She asked about the nature of my call. I balked, “I just needed to speak with the Governor. He knows what this is about,” I said. She told me to call back at noon, and she’d have a better idea of when he would be free.
I called at noon and was quickly transferred to Moore, who then transferred me to Walker’s Chief of Staff Keith Gilkes. He was “expecting my call.”
“David!” he said with an audible smile.
I politely said hello, not knowing how friendly Gilkes and Koch may be. He was eager to help. “I was really hoping to talk directly to Scott,” I said. He said that could be arranged and that I should just leave my number. I explained to Gilkes, “My goddamn maid, Maria, put my phone in the washer. I’d have her deported, but she works for next to nothing.” Gilkes found this amusing. “I’m calling from the VOID—with the VOID, or whatever it’s called. You know, the Snype!”
“Gotcha,” Gilkes said. “Let me check the schedule here…OK, there’s an opening at 2 o’clock Central Standard Time. Just call this same number and we’ll put you through.”
Could it really be that easy? Yes.
Walker’s spokesman Cullen Werwie confirms the audio is real. But in a statement he says the call verifies Walker is the same person both in public and private:
Throughout this call the Governor maintained his appreciation for and commitment to civil discourse. The phone call shows that the governor says the same thing in private as he does in public and the lengths that others will go to disrupt the civil debate Wisconsin is having.
Democrats, however, used the recording to blast Walker.
“Scott Walker won’t listen to Senate Democrats, or the hundreds of thousands of average Wisconsinites who are speaking up against his divisive power grab. But an oil billionaire from Kansas gets his full attention,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Mike Tate told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “It is a damning, embarrassing and possibly illegal admission that Scott Walker has put Wisconsin up for sale.”
“My first reaction, it’s revealing of his true agenda and his character,” State Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) added.
According to the Sentinel, the Koch brothers are supporters of Walker’s. Koch Industries’ political action committee donated $43,000 to Walker’s political fund last fall during his run for governor.
But while Democrats are quick to smear the governor over the audio, Phillip Klein at the American Spectator thinks it isn’t damning at all, and in a post he pokes holes in the accusations flowing from the left.
“Throughout the call, fake Koch makes a series of bizarre and over-the-top comments such as ‘gotta crush that union,’ but Walker generally either changes the subject or treats the remarks politely without cosigning them, as a host or guest would do with a crazy caller on talk radio or C-SPAN,” Klein Writes.
He gos on to pick apart each argument, such as the charges that Walker agreed with the fake Koch about MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski being a “real piece of a**”:
Some liberals are claiming that Walker responded “oh yeah” when fake Koch referred to MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski as a “piece of a–.” But TNR‘s Jon Chait has had to correct his post to acknowledge that the early transcription was “totally misleading.” If you listen to the audio of the exchange (just before the 7 minute mark), you’ll hear that what actually happened is that fake Koch said, “You gotta love that Mika Brzezinski,“ Walker said ”Oh yeah” and started to change the subject, there was cross talk when fake Koch referred to her as a “piece of a–,” and then Walker goes on to tell an unrelated story.
And throughout, Klein writes, Walker is consistent regarding his convictions, even at one point saying, “We’re doing the just and right thing for the right reasons, and it’s all about getting our freedoms back.”
“The worst you can say about the call — aside from the screening bungle by his staffers — is that he took 20 minutes of time to speak with a rich guy from out of state,” Klein says. “But at the same time, the call undermines the conspiracy that Koch is secretly controlling events in Wisconsin, as Walker is clearly explaining the way things are to fake Koch and the decisions he’s making, rather than acting on Koch’s suggestions.”
Editor’s note: An edited transcript of the call can be read here. You can also read Blaze blogger Kevin Balfe’s thoughts on the issue here.

Thats what you get when you elect a Muslim in Chief. I used to think we elected a communist but after researching the caliphate and the muslim brotherhood in America I have changed my mind. I think its funny the union leaders believe he is a commie and are happy to use Obamao to their advantage, when in reality he is ushering in Islam. Even the green movement has a whole new meaning.

And his explanation of how easy it was to get to talk to him because he used the name Koch is idiotic. If Koch was really that big a player and that important then they would have known immediately that it wasn’t really him. People don’t check their schedules and tell people to call back on appointment when they are supposedly best pals and partners in crime.
It’s also great how he constantly uses idiotic stereotypes that liberals push about conservatives, and editorializes that the people he spoke to thought it was all hilarious even though none of them reacted whatsoever on the audio.
Liberals please get your **** straight. I can‘t even get angry about this because it’s just too pathetically sad. Does every tool with a blog fancy themselves as investigative journalists now?

We are talking about a group who does not produce a profit nor do they work for the EVIL INDUSTRIALIST’s who exploited the workers. These workers can hardly be exploited nor could there be child labor problems being they work for the very body who produces the laws of which protect them.
I understand your support for Unions , especially, with the indication of the time period of which you grew up. However, this here with the Public Unions lies a problem of conflict of interest. Many of great minds of the past strongly opposed the Public Sector going Union because of these very problems of corruption. Which seems to be the case now. 5 Day work week
8 hour day
Paid vacations
Sick time
Safe working conditions
Child labor laws
@veryseniorcitizen – Yes, unions served a purpose long ago. We now have laws protecting from unsafe work environments and child labor laws. Businesses have also found that the work force are more productive under a work schedule that is 5 days a week and are afforded vacation and sick time. The issue is not about being fair with the public empoyees. The issue is they have demanded and have been given far more than the system can afford. Now, rather than being reasonable and agreeing to some concessions the unions demand that our taxes be raised rather than they be reasonable and pay more for their retirement and such.

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 5:03pmThe interesting parts of story:
• Walker admits having considered planting provocateurs in the crowd.
• Walker plans to trick state senate dems into meeting so that he can hold the quorum open, even without their presence.
• There’s some bill being presented that forces the absent dems to pick up their checks in person, and if/when they do show up to get them, the checks will be locked in the desks on the house floor.
• ‘Koch’ calls up and gets a 20 minute, in-depth report from the governor; there is very little prodding from ‘Koch’. Simply put, Koch is the boss.
• Walker’s biggest public complaint about the protests is that many protesters are from out of state. Koch is very much from out of state.

So why is it OK that our so called ‘president’ talks to richard trumpka almost every day? I’d rather my representatives be talking to people who know how to do business and make money, than people who know how to get unions into unrecoverable debt, and promise people things they can never deliver. obama already knows how to do that.
Besides that all I hear is ‘what’s going on’ talk, though i couldn’t listen to that tool for both recordings.
Bottom line is that the guy has to fix his financial problems and the democrats want to pretend that people holding signs make financial problems go away.

The interesting parts of story:
• Walker admits having considered planting provocateurs in the crowd.
- He also reasoned that it would be ill advised to proceed with such a plan.
- How do you feel about the Unions “planting” people in the crowd that are not from Wisconsin? If you don’t have an issue with that you are a bit of a hypocrit.
• Walker plans to trick state senate dems into meeting so that he can hold the quorum open, even without their presence.
- The democrats shouldn’t need to be tricked. They should be at their job doing their job.
• There’s some bill being presented that forces the absent dems to pick up their checks in person, and if/when they do show up to get them, the checks will be locked in the desks on the house floor.
- Again, the democrats should be on the job site doing their job. Not hiding in another state. C’mon, be honest, if the republicans pulled a stunt like this you would be livid.
• ‘Koch’ calls up and gets a 20 minute, in-depth report from the governor; there is very little prodding from ‘Koch’. Simply put, Koch is the boss.
- The man had to call up multiple times to get to Walker. Doesn’t sound to me like there was an open door for **** or that Walker was waiting by the phone for it to ring.
- You have a problem with a powerful man contacting a representative. Do you have the same problem with Trumka meeting with representatives of the White House three times a week? This is of his own admission. There is video of him saying this to a group.
• Walker’s biggest public complaint about the protests is that many protesters are from out of state. Koch is very much from out of state.
- You are cherry picking. Walker also said let them protest all they want as we are on the side of what is right. Polls are showing that Walker has a majority of Wisconsinites on his side. I believe the number will continue to grow as the people see the behavior that has been shown and continues to be shown.
Report Post »- There is an inherent problem with unions dealing with the very people they help get elected. If that isn‘t corruption then I don’t know what is.
- After the Giffords assasination attempt there was much made of the “vitriol”. We have seen plenty of Vitriol in the past week during the protesting. Again, very hypocritical.

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 6:10pmOK so he pretty much said in (what was supposed to be) private what he has been saying in public. Call me a simple man, but isn’t that what people should hope and expect out of their elected officials? Not like the do as a I say and not as I do routine of the Obamas, hello we all need to make sacrifices while I take my (what are we on now?) 15th vacation now, or we all need to make cutbacks with Michelle and her 40 some odd entourage the next largest of which being less then 5.
The only part out of that whole thing that may seem out of order would be the offer to fly Gov. Walker out to California, now I say seem because on the surface it may appear to be a direct conflict of what he was referring to with the 14 AWOL Dems. The very important piece of context that changes the charge that opponents have already placed on him for his acquiescence to the offer is that the 14 Dems are possibly accepting the “donations & help” for in return to not do their jobs. Ostensibly taking a bribe to throw a match. The supposed offer from the fake Koch is not in an attempt to get him to fore-go the tenants of his office. Really, even in his attempt to “gotcha” Gov. Walker the fake Koch framed his offer in a way that would not break any laws.

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 9:54pmWow–the leftists here are confused. Very confused. So what I am actually saying is, that’s normal.
For you uberpartisans on the left—get a grip and read the bill and check out the budget. This isn’t about who you hate and who you think is a puppet, if you can’t function on basic facts that threaten your freedom and livelihood and instead engage in the usual name-calling, then please disengage yourself from the voting booth. If you don’t have any real clue as to why your vote matters and why it should be used wisely OR you use it to vote in those who will give you goodies, PLEASE don’t ask the rest of us later where it all went wrong. We’ll be busy picking ourselves up and rebuilding. By that time, there will be no union to act as your thugmaster and force us to hand you money. It will be do or die–meaning, you had better learn to be self-sufficient. Though most of us are charitable–not all are worthy of charity. We choose wisely and compassionately. We don’t feed lions expecting them to purr–we just won’t feed them. We know no matter what compassion we show to the lion, its in is very nature to attack. Wake up.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 7:41amScott Walker handled a touchy situation with a person he believed to be a heavy weight political backer, but who had some odd things to say, in a very graceful manner. When someone donates in the neighborhood of 43,000 to your campaign, you don’t ignore a call from them. But!! He didn’t sign on to any of the pseudo-Koch’s odd remarks. He did say the same things he has said already in public with the exception of upcoming strategy. That is the only thing I wish Mr. Walker would have kept to himself. But again, a man in his position cannot afford to alienate big dollar backers. It‘s relieving to not hear him say anything about the whole thing he hasn’t already said in public venues. His redirection at the embarrassing comments pseudo-Koch made was skillful.

That is exactly what I was thinking. IF Gov Walker is Koch’s puppet and taking direction from him, he would have recognized that the voice was not Koch’s. This proves that he IS NOT in constant communications with Koch. I don’t know about you, but if I have spoken to someone on the phone before even if only once, I would recognize their voice to some degree. He didn‘t catch the difference in voice which leads me to believe he isn’t very familiar with Koch’s voice. If he isn’t familiar with his voice, then he isn’t talking to him regularly.
But of course the left will spin it, like they do EVERYTHING else and the useful idiots will believe it.
