Legendary Investor: Approaching Crisis Worse Than 08, Yuan Will be Safer Than Dollar

Jim Rogers

Legendary investor Jim Rogers, CEO of Rogers Holdings, offered a very glum outlook on the U.S. economy yesterday. According to him, we’re headed for a crisis worse than 2008, the Chinese Yuan will soon be safer than the dollar, and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will probably institute another round of money-printing, or QE3.

“The debts that are in this country are skyrocketing,” he told CNBC. “In the last three years the government has spent staggering amounts of money and the Federal Reserve is taking on staggering amounts of debt.

“When the problems arise  next time…what are they going to do? They can’t quadruple the debt again. They cannot print that much more money. It’s gonna be worse the next time around.”

He later added, “The U.S. is the largest debtor nation in the history of the world. The debts are going through the roof. Would you keep lending money to somebody who’s spending money and not doing anything about it? No you wouldn’t.”

Because of that, he said the Chinese Yuan will be a safer currency bet than the dollar. And what may even better is gold and silver: he’s hoping the price goes down on both so he can “pick up the phone and buy more.”

He’s also convinced Ben Bernanke, who he calls a “disaster,” will institute another round of quantitative easing, essentially printing money, later this year.

“They’re gonna bring it back because [Bernanke will] be terrified and Washington will be terrified,” he said. “There’s an election coming in November 2012. Washington’s gonna print more money.”

According to him “draconian” cuts will be needed to control U.S. debt:

Rogers comments come as a new poll reveals nearly half of Americans expect another Great Depression in the next 12 months.

If things do fall apart, who are you going to sell your gold to? Trade it for silver? When you have to use a full ounce of gold to buy a loaf of bread, it’ll go quick. Gold and silver are not the investments for economic collapse but rather for economic uncertainty. I myself am stockpiling up enough food to take my family through 12-months. If my job goes away or my dollars are worthless at least we’ll be able to sit down together at the dinner table. For the price of 3 oz of gold, I’m able to buy 12 months of peace of mind.

I plan to sell my stockpiled “commodities”, (from ammo to zuccini seeds). The folks that paid $1500/ oz for gold are going to end up selling it to me for 25 lbs of pinto beans/oz.
If stockpiling trade amounts of food (bulky)commodities isn’t your style…just stockpile a couple thousand gallons of moderate quality whiskey or other beverage…the liquor stores are ALWAYS the first to be emptied and your supply (carefully sold in small amounts) will be a very trade-able commodity…has been since the dawn of time.

That’s how government handouts appear, also. The point is, nothing is “free”, despite what your president tells you. The government is either taking money from other people who work hard, China is lending it to us, and we have to pay interest, or they’re printing money making your dollars worth less. All three have a negative affect on the country as a whole.

As for the free to the end-user, you don’t think they recover the money by charging you more for their product? Have you looked at a hospital bill lately, or the ridiculous cost of a cup of coffee at these shops?

Critical Thinking requires thought beyond the obvious.

You know, you may be right about the silly secessionist part. The Federal government would all they could to stop it. Texas created 38% of all the jobs in the country last year. We’re providing large sums of money to the Federal government so they can redistribute it to failing states like California.

That being said, I sincerely believe we here in Texas could do far better on our own that being under the regulatory thumb of the Federal government. After your president finishes destroying the US, we may have no other choice but to become an independent republic again. People who value freedom will no doubt flock to Texas. Being that liberals love government handouts, I don‘t expect you’ll be one of them.

Texas is a great state in which to live, fiscally and otherwise. That has a lot to do with the conservative, less-intrusive government. Compare it to any of the many Liberal, democratically run states. Notice they’re all broke and struggling?

I guess he could go down the road to the next coffee shop…oops it had to close it’s doors 5 months ago…well there’s always the evil Corporate Oppressor McDonalds…oops they often require you to ask at the counter and most now only allow limited access that’s too slow for video to stream….(too many perverts hanging around?)

Obama is being a good Keynesian, an economic theory I totally disagree with. Under Keynesianism, all new money is injected into the system as new debt. That’s just how it works. If the coming economic disaster doesn’t show the world how bad a system it is and how it must be avoided in the future then man will never grow beyond where we are now.

You nailed it. Many people know that we have a debt problem, know that we can’t continue on, know that sacrifices have to be made, but can‘t or won’t do what’s necessary to start fixing the problem.

They’re waiting for someone else to make the hard decision for them, because that way they don’t have to take responsibility for the suffering and violence that is coming. And that “someone else” clearly won’t be any of our elected leaders. The force will be external, e.g. the Chinese and other creditor nations refusing to buy more of our debt.

The Yuan is growlly inflated as well. The Asians in general seem to have taken Keynes seriously, which of couse is a foolish mistake, since his policies were intended to erode political liberty by centralizing wealth and power, preferentially in the hands of the “in”, to the expense of political opponents, and the politically unnecessary.

Always in times of crisis, we debates between what is called, say, “remediation”, or ameliorization; and on the other hand “reform”. The latter is always code speak for the implementation of desired political goals under the CLOAK of crisis. Look at the power unions got under FDR. As one example, they more or less got the right to literally act as organized criminal empowered by law to use violence, intimidation and vandalism–all normally against the law for everyong–to pursue labor cartels whose members weren’t really give a choice in the matter, and whose bosses felt and feel no accountability to them.

What conservatives, need to recognize, on our part, that our system IS fundamentally corrupt, in definable, real ways, and that since our goal is MORE freedom, that we CAN in fact combine reform with relief. Almost all Americans have been the victims of a systematic theft that has been going on at a minimum since 1913, and depending on how we define things, possibly all of time, since banks were invented. To the extent of my knowledge, no truly free banking system has ever existed anywhere http://www.goodnessmovement.com

You may not subscribe, but that won’t fail his business ventures. The content will either be worth the price, or it won’t. Can’t get much simpler than that. I personally think he might be a little ahead of his time. As customized content (i.e., see hulu, appletv, netflix) becomes as available as live television, you will see people pay for their information and entertainment a la carte vs. the traditional cable or satellite subscription. That isn’t far away, and for some is already here. I’m on the fence…only two things holding me back from the above–1. getting the remainder of the networks on board (most are), and 2. Yes, you’re correct: that’s exactly what Obama will say. But the Chinese don’t really care. It’s their money, and eventually they‘ll decide that we’re not a good credit risk. Calling the Chinese government “racist” won’t make any difference.

Anyone else catch that he formed the quantum fund in 1973 with SOROS ?

$10 says the bank he’s short on is Goldman sacks. He could tank them with a word,
he reluctant to say giving them time to divest.

I like the guy, but his strategy is not for everybody, you have to know your stuff to be a currency trader. He is right about commodities though, and that tidbit about the average age of the American farmer being 58 years old spells doom for the american farm, our kids will be under huge agri business companies, almost zero incentive to start or take over a farm these days.
That is different than OWNING the farmland “with water” as that is an assett that can be sold when big agri is looking to expand in the coming years….

I will still pay for the Glenn Beck show by canceling my subscription to Time Warner cable. I have already realized that the only reason I keep cable is that is the way for me to get fox news. But I stuck paying for all of those Obama cheer stations also. This will be the best way for me to boycott those stations. I hope FOX network will team up with Beck and offer all that programming to his subscribers. When half of the population drops cable TV to go with GBTV and FBN, that will wake up those people.

I just signed up for GBTV for $49.95 per year. It looks amazingly great in HD. All I needed to do was run a PC VGA monitor cable from my PC to my flat screen. It is a relief to see how un-PC GBTV really is and with a great selection of various programming. You get the straight scoop on GBTV and it is presented in a very interesting way. Best money I ever spent. The Socialists, Islamists, Statists, and Commies will have a hissy fit. They will hate it worse than Glenn’s FOX program. Now I know why Obama wanted to have control of the internet shut off switch. I am looking forward to the “Super Spooky Dude” cartoons. It actually looks and sounds like Spooky Dude himself. I think GBTV is going to put the screws to PC TV.

Ironman, Some of us 50-somethings who lost their jobs (years ago now) can’t find employment – even at Walmart. I’ve given up looking for a professional job after 2-1/2 years. Luckily I saved and inherited a bit of money and its what my family of four is living on now. Yes, I do question spending an extra $5 on anything that isn’t food, house, gas or health related and their has been little to nothing I can do about it. We’ve sold off everything we can, got rid of the cellphone, the tv service and downgraded on anything we could. House payment still has to be made every month – but its been up for sale for over a year. Come on – don’t insult people.

I don’t need my TV. I do need truthful information and there are very few places to get that except the net, especially when Glenn leaves TV. Who else is there? Sean? He loves politics and doesn’t understand the depth and breath of this thing but he will, too late but that‘s OK because he’ll feel bad about it. It‘s not that he doesn’t see some of the signs, he just won’t say anything about the obvious conclusions. O’really is an absolute statist joke, I stopped watching him years ago because it was pointless. The man does believe in freedom but he believes that ‘somebody’ should control that freedom and us. I typically agree with your posts. But I have to say I think you are a little overly optimistic on this issue. It will take literally decades to reverse what has happened to this country. Our current socio-economic policies are closer to pure communist socialism than they are to the original liberal capitalism of the 1800′s. We went off track in the 1930′s, not with the current administration, he’s just the last in a long line of socialists. We are so far from where we were we can’t even see or describe it. The world is too far gone, and we are flowing down the same river…..it’s too late. Horrible times are around the corner and people who think free market capitalism and republican government can save us will be blamed for anything that goes wrong…..until it is completely abolished……NOTW

The country is in deep trouble we have 10% inflation right now from QE 1 and Tarp, QE 2 just ended or will end this month which when it kicks in next year or so inflation will be 30%. Now there are rumors of QE 3 which by most experts opinion will bring us to hyperinflation by 2013 50% inflation. That alone should get people‘s anger up if it isn’t up already, Obama is taking this country down on purpose the Left is quietly cheering him on, little do they know that they will be just as destitute and miserable as everyone else .

I agree (for once) with LACT….

I think Obama has played us all for a fool. We’re all running around focusing on stopping his re-election and he doesn’t even care about getting re-elected, because his work will be done before the 2012 elections. He is now promising to give Greece a pile of money (we don’t have) ??! WT?? The only logical reason is that he knows he won’t get re-elected as people figure out he is destroying American on purpose (with Gorge Soros and Co.) but it doesn’t matter because with the “mutually assured destruction” policies in the world financial markets he will have brought down the entire world economy while we all watched in shock. Then he will be in a position to usher in Marshall Law as their is going to be massive civil unrest (at least in the inner cities and suburbs close to the cities, where there will be little food) and let his religious followers usher him in as defacto leader to “help get us through this crisis” as it would be too chaotic to have an election during this chaos…

Strap in folks, this is going to be a bumpy ride! Get a gun if you don’t have one, get some ammo to protect your food supplies…get some water purification filters and if you don’t have some freeze dried food sources, go and spend an entire paycheck to get you through at least 6 months.

I don’t care what people give as their excuse, if they are on the net, then they are spending money that they can “afford” to spend. The cost to get Glenn is less than it would be to drop cable/satellite or other form of entertainment. Not to mention, that we still get three hours of radio free daily. I can afford to lose one pound of meat a month for an education. It is a heck of a lot cheaper than going to college, and it actually teaches me HOW TO THINK, not WHAT TO THINK.
