Lego Bible Banned By Sam‘s Club Following Parents’ ‘Mature Content’ Complaints

Brendan Smith (who calls himself a “reverend” in jest) has a penchant for Legos. The atheist author and children’s toy aficionado has already published three popular books and he has a well-known web site — all of which attempt to tell Biblical stories through Lego re-creations.

Now, controversy is brewing after Smith’s latest book, “The Brick Bible,” was recently banned from Sam’s Club stores over charges that it contains “mature content.” It‘s widely known that Smith’s work does, indeed, contain some not-so-kid-friendly images.

On the Brick Testament web site, the following cautionary message is written, “The Bible contains material some may consider morally objectionable and/or inappropriate for children.” Clearly, it’s the re-creations that are potentially “objectionable,” which is why Smith has added this slightly sarcastic cautionary note.

Lego Bible Banned by Sams Club | Brendan SmithS The Brick Bible

CNET calls the images shown on the web site, “a series of interpretations of sexually suggestive passages of the Bible.” Smith, though, is confused, saying that he doesn’t understand why the latest book was banned, as controversial selections were apparently removed from it.

According to Smith, Walmart and Sam’s Club representatives saw an advance copy of the book and, as a result, they initially expressed interest in placing it in stores. He also claims that they were willing to sell the book only if he removed images of Old Testament Bible characters in sexual poses.

In the end, the sexual images were not included in the book. But according to CNET, a spokesperson for Sam‘s Club claims that the company was never involved in conversations prior to the book’s publication.

Apparently, the company pulled the book following complaints from consumers. Smith, though, doesn’t know for sure how many people actually spoke out against “The Brick Bible,” as Sam’s Club has not yet share that information. CNET did receive a vague response from Sam’s Club.

“We offered the print version only of ‘The Brick Bible’ in our clubs….Sam‘s Club received numerous concerns from our members and parents about the mature content in what is perceived as a children’s book,” a spokesperson said. “Accordingly, Sam’s Club made a business decision to discontinue sales.”

On Monday, Smith wrote the following on his Facebook page:

“I have just been informed that Sam‘s Club is pulling ’The Brick Bible’ from the shelves of all of their retail locations nationwide due to the complaints of a handful of people that it is vulgar and violent. This despite the book containing only straightforward illustrations of Bible stories using direct quotes from scripture.

The Brick Testament has won tens of thousands of fans across a wide spectrum of beliefs who appreciate it as a fun, engaging way to get a better knowledge of the Bible’s contents. I know that The Brick Bible book will not be right for everyone, but it saddens me to think that a ban at Sam’s Club will prevent thousands of people from coming across The Brick Bible and being allowed to make up their own minds about it.”

Here‘s a 2009 report that recap’s Smith’s work:

If Smith‘s assertions about Sam’s Club are true, the decision to stop selling the book may have roots in a variety of scenarious. Perhaps Sam‘s Club became nervous over the sexual content that is present on Smith’s web site — or, maybe the company falsely assumed that the images were still present in the new book.

Either way, Smith isn‘t happy over the chain’s decision to remove his book.

Many atheists dislike organized religion because of the tax free status and the way many pastors and preachers abuse the power and money that come with it.

I guess this author may as well get his.

@ ANTON PHIBES- The name “Christianity” is not in the bible not the word Christian. If the name of Gods religion is called Christianity why didn’t God put that word in the bible. The word Christian is a derogatory term used by the enemy of those who were followers of Christ. They called his followers Christians and they liked it so they kept using it. Like the whites used to call blacks the “n” word. Now the blacks call themselves the “n” word. They liked it, so they kept it. So the “n” word and the word “Christian” are derogatory terms.

While that may be the case, please keep in mind that gay no longer means happy, queer no longer means strange, and **** aren’t bundles of sticks. I’m sure that since these words were primarily innocent until the gay propaganda started, it’s nothing to us that the meaning of Christianity has also changed, from negative to positive, as opposed to the 3 aforementioned words. The way you use your comment about Christians
Comparing them to A black slang term that is a derogatory name that only the select few of the Black race embrace .
And to me ,can only be taken one way . I only wish this conversation was face to face…
Christians wear that term as a badge of honor ,to pick up their own cross and carry it . Jesus said that we would be hated by all men for his namesake. No MAN can be greater than their MASTER.
They hated Jesus and they will hate all who follow their (lord and Master) Christians
      .
That being said …How do you respond to your
      ENIMIES ..!!!
Do the followers of Islam and the writing of Mohammad, respond with pride and conviction when being compared, to a child molesters or a baby raper. Your religion is also is called one of hate, by your ENIMIES…!
And will… YOU.!!. Wear that term as a badge of honor .
I can only say you never was in a Sunday school class, young minds cannot comprehend and it is better to teach a child as he grows and matures. As so he has a grounded understanding or the Bible. You don’t start a kid in Algebra, before he can count to ten. Your logic can only be construed as insulting to anyone with half a brain.
Take your ideological propaganda pushing backward hell bound thought process and peddle it somewhere else….!

@ SAWBUCK- If a book claims to be from God that book should not be kept from the population because that population is not old enough to be exposed to adult material. If the bible did not have the word bible written on the cover, you would not read it to your children until they reached the age of consent. Just like you wouldn’t expose your children or grandchildren to adult magazines until they reached the age of consent.

The Qur’an has no such restriction, the Qur’an does not contain pornography. A sophisticated 7 year with good reading comprehension skills could pick up the Qur’an and read it from cover to cover and not be exposed at all to pornographic material. No other religious book in the world could be so bold to make that claim. God does not talk like some of the stories written in the bible. A prophet of God getting drunk and having sex with his daughter, not once, but on 2 different occasions with different daughters. C’mon man! And you want to call the prophet of Islam a pedophile?! Abraham has sex with his sister and you want call the prophet of Islam a pedophile?! What do you call these men? And what do you call a book that has the potential to expose little kids to this garbage? Back in the day there was an old computer programming term that programmers would use called GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out), this is a good description of some of the stories in the bible. The so called “ ” word of God.

I’m guessing you are talking about

But My only response to that is there are people in prison today
that have done real bad things and asked our lord (Jesus) to forgive them.
      They will be in heaven.
      God does forgive.
And the Apostle Paul use to persecute Christians.
And I re-peat Jesus is faiful and Just and does Forgive
and I believe Paul is in heaven also.
Now If Paul had a Bomb vest on and went into a crowd
and blew himself and othes up.
He would not be able to ask for forgivness ,

Jehovah gave us free will. That was not mean we are free to force others to believe in him or as we believe. People get to choose for themselves without corecion. The idea of forcing others to believe one way over another is a product of man’s interpretation and is used to control others for their own purposes. It’s about power. God has it and they want some of it. They are using God and peoples’ beliefs to control them.

The fact that man’s sin is not covered up is just proof that the Bible is true. Man didn’t try to cover up to look good. It is the Truth from Divine Inspiration..

Sorry, but I’ve read most of the OT(KJV), and to be honest, I don’t really recall anything that was graphic. I think you’re reading the wrong bible. I think… the ‘worst’ I‘ve come across is ’And Adam knew his wife, and she bear him a son’. Other than that, pretty mild.

You can’t see it because you have been overexposed to pornography on TV and in society, and probably as child from the bible. You have become desensitized to it and can’t recognize it when you see it.

@surham How old are you? You reason like a child. Have you not read 1 corinthians 13:11???

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

@ SCHMITE123OH- You, acting like an adult? You attack me personally because you can’t handle me intellectually and you say, I’m acting like a child! I’m not surprised, this is what christian‘s do when they can’t win a discussion on an intellectual basis. Notice the people that respond to my comments, most of them attack me personally. They either cannot or will not debate my post.

I agree. Kids should learn about sex, in the home, in age appropriate discussions with their parents. For those who are naive, and objecting to the “Lego Bible”, do you mean to tell me, you never had your Ken and Barbie dolls sleep together? I guess your mom and dad never had the birds and the bees talk with you. You never knew about sex until your wedding night (Sarcasm).

Please, somebody explain to me why an atheist is writing a Bible directed towards our young children? That alone makes me suspicious! I haven’t seen this book but I would not be at all surprised to find out there was an agenda behind it.

      USAMama,

Because so many christians refuse to read the book themselves. The will read the nice parts but the parts which show gods true character never seam to get read.

Agreed. I don’t understand why the sex part is even remotely offensive. What do you think Adam and Eve were doing? They had unlimited food, a beautiful garden, and they were naked.

Jack Nicholson said it best, “If you cut off a breast, it’s PG-13, if you show a breast it’s rated R.”

Religion has caused more of the world’s wars than any other factor in the last 2000 years. I cannot prove to you that God doesn’t exist (impossible to prove a negative)…prove to me that he does. What a simple mind you have sir!

Winedude: “Religion has caused more of the world’s wars than any other factor in the last 2000 years.” So? There have been plenty of wars fought over Money, Food, Land – yet you don’t talk about that, do you? Even as an Athiest, you have to recognize the positive influence of relgion on humanity or, at least Christianity. After all, what other religion has created country with the kind of Liberty that America has been blessed with for the last 200+ years?

And lastly, I and many others I know would much rather be ‘simple minded’ by your standards and right with God than to have it any other way, so you’ll get no where here with that attitude.

I agree…I don’t even know why I should be labelled atheist, I don’t pratice not believing in god, I just live my life. I have no problem with people who need faith in a higher power to get through the days.

The bible is pretty graphic really…there‘s a reason children’s bibles don’t cover stories like egglon and the left handed judge ehood, jael and the tent peg, or whats his face that wouldn‘t carry on his brother’s bloodline and got struck down by god for spilling his seed.

I‘m not familiar with this ’edition’ of the bible, but perhaps there are some kid-unfriendly stories in there?

I believe above his atheist beliefs this makes him a HYPOCRITE! Kinda like all the anti-capitalist OWSers running around with their Mac books, Iphones, nice leather shoes, accepting free food from strangers while denying the homeless. HYPOCRITES! They all take the stances they take because it gets them attention.

Maybe if the atheists would read the Bible they would come to know how wrong they are in denying Gods’ existence. To read all the prophecies that have come true, and the ones that are being fulfilled in our day should be quite an eye-opener if viewed with an open mind. I think their hostility towards Christians and Jews stems from envy!

@science What? Not sure what your train of thought is. Does your child have ears to hear? Let those who have ears hear.

      Zechariah 7.

And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, 9Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: 10And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. 11But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. 12Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. 13Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts: 14But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

Most people ignore verses 9 &10. Most follow verse 11. May everyone repent of their sins, for all have sinned. God be the Glory, through our Lord, and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
