Lesbian Pastor Refuses to Wed Straights Until Gays Allowed to Marry in NC

Lesbian Baptist Pastor Nancy Petty Wants Gay Marriage LegalizedPastor Nancy Petty, the lesbian spiritual leader at Pullen Memorial Baptist church in Raleigh, N.C., has a message for her state: Legalize same-sex marriage — or else. Until gay unions are legislatively permitted, Petty plans to no longer sign marriage licenses — an action that will potentially have a profound impact on her congregation.

At the end of July, Petty told her church body that until the state begins allowing gay couples to wed, she is uncomfortable performing nuptials. Apparently, she has asked church deacons to allow permission to be relieved of this duty until the matter is settled (i.e. until the state enables same-sex marriage). Though she claims that she’s enjoyed presiding over weddings, she says:

“every time I sign a marriage license for a heterosexual couple and act as an agent of the state, I am reminded of those couples who I marry that are denied the basic human right to legally marry the person of their choice.”

Star News Online further explains Petty’s decision:

She’ll do the religious blessing at Pullen, but she won’t sign a marriage license. If the congregation backs her up, anyone wanting a state-sanctioned marriage will need to see a magistrate first — most likely in the public safety building downtown, where brides in their gown must pass through a metal detector.

Lesbian Baptist Pastor Nancy Petty Wants Gay Marriage Legalized

In addressing same-sex marriage, Petty said the following to her congregation:

“Do we, Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, want to continue to participate in offering religious ceremonies that carry with them civil and human rights that are not afforded to all people? Or will it be our practice and the practice of our ministers to honor all marriages equally by only offering religious ceremonies, thus not acting as agents of the state and perpetuating the unjust marriage laws of our state?”

Some may be wondering how a Baptist church could condone such actions. Others may be questioning the church’s general stance on same-sex relationships. The Associated Baptist Press (ABP) has more:

The church has long blessed unions between both same-sex and heterosexual couples, [Petty] said, but they are not the same. For heterosexuals it is called a “marriage” and satisfies requirements for the state. The others are called “unions” and are not legally binding.

Petty said she has “become increasingly uncomfortable with the inequality” of the two ceremonies. Even though the intent is to celebrate lifelong committed relationships equally, she believes the church unwittingly condones marriage inequality by acting as an agent of the state.

The church has a long history of advocating for progressive policies. According to ABP, its former pastor, Edwin McNeill Poteat, was a leading advocate for progressive Christianity within the Southern Baptist Convention in the early 1900s.

The pastors who followed also took stances on issues related to organized labor, the Vietnam War and, obviously, gay rights. As a result of the latter, the church was removed from the Raleigh Baptist Association, the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and the Southern Baptist Convention in the 1990s.

Petty has been extremely active in her community. In 2010, she was arrested for taking part in a NAACP protest over a school diversity policy that was being stricken from the books. Here’s a video that showcases statements from Rev. William Barber of the NAACP as well as his and Petty’s arrest (she is only visible in a few frames, but her arrest and presence at the event is documented):

Considering the current debate over same-sex marriage across America, there’s no telling how long Petty could be refraining from signing licenses. The issue continues to be highly debated in the state.

I live outside of Raleigh, NC and know exactly where this church is and on what it, and most of its congregants, are really focused. It is a typical liberal, progressive church. Nancy Petty most recently made headlines by protesting along with the NC chapter of the NAACP some of the school board policies made in Wake County. It comes as no surprise then that this church and Petty essentially follow along on the liberal agenda.

This comes as no surprise. She is an openly gay female “Baptist” “pastor” and so it should come as no surprise that she is for gay marriage. Otherwise she would have to admit that she herself is wrong in her lifestyle. Thus she is seeking not only the “legitimization” of homosexuality but of her very way of life.

Sadly, she is herself led astray and others are following her. This issue will not go away anytime soon and, as much as I hate to admit it, it seems like those who believe that homosexuality is not morally acceptable are going to continue to lose these types of battles. I am not being pessimistic, but rather realistic.

This fight will eventually come to my home state, and it will probably come to yours, if it hasn’t already.

It would behove “Pastor” Nancy to get her head out of her ass. Raleigh/Durham has become an island unto itself inhabited by northern liberal transplants, and they are oblivious to the culture of the state that surrounds them. Hell will freeze over before “gay marriage” is allowed in North Carolina. Frankly, life in NC could potentially become unbearable for those who want to push it. Take your liberal progressive multicultural ****-friendly ******** somewhere where it’s wanted – ’cause it ain’t wanted here.

The real question here is… does she really think that everyone in that state will jump up and demand gay marriages just so that SHE will be more willing to perform ‘straight’ marriages?
this is more like a child throwing a temper tantrum… and as all parents know, ignore them for 5 minutes and they stop.

First let me say I sadly agree with you this fight is not going away.
Second: This person is no pastor. She and those like her are heretics!
Is there a straight couple who would WANT this person to “marry” them?
      I can’t imagine a church making a gay person a pastor!
She must have been “ordained” by the state.
I am SICK of Govt sticking it’s long booger filled nose into our churches!
This kinda nonsense needs to stop and stop now! God does love gay people!
He died for them same as He did me!
However those who LIVE in sin are NOT to be leaders in the church!
He lovingly calls us out of our sin! Does this mean pastors do not sin? No.
But they do or should strive NOT TO!!!!!! Not embrace sinful behavior!!!!

I am grateful I do not have to make the call as to who does and does not go to heaven however the bible does have a list of those who practice what is on the list will not see heaven. Homosexuality is on that list. Read it for your self the above post is not wrong. However we do not have to remind the sinner they are sinners they know it. Beating a person with an iron cross will not win the lost but if we glaze over the consequences of sin we do not help the stuck get free.

You’re going to find that when you try to serve yourself that you wind up out of control because the whole object of serving self is I want to be in charge of my life. And the irony, God always works in irony, the irony in Rom. 1 is that the more you try to serve yourself and bring ourselves and our program into effect, it always falls apart. Homosexuality, which is the illustration in Rom. 1, is the hallmark of a pagan society. We’ll see this in Gen. 14. The hallmark of a pagan society has always been homosexuality, ALWAYS, on every continent, all the time. It was prevalent in the Greeks, it was prevalent in Rome; we think we’ve got a problem, the Greeks and the Romans were like San Francisco from one end of the Mediterranean to the other, that’s the way it was. Paul lived in that, the early church lived in that, they lived in a profoundly perverted society and Paul makes a statement in Corinthians that many of those in the Corinthian church were, past tense, homosexuals. They were cured. It can be dealt with by submitting to the word of God.

The Episcopal Church has been totally taken over by the gay and lesbian movement. Some Pastors and Bishops are openly gay and living in gay relationships. The Presbyterian, Methodist, and probably the Baptists are now allowing gays to hold higher office in their churches. The majority of the congregants are against this and therefore choose to leave their church. When there are no more straight members then they win. You can‘t force people to accept something they don’t believe in and don’t agree with. Most of these people are activists and aren’t really interested in following scripture, just rewriting it to suit their needs.

There are no such things as either of these in God’s Word and directions to us.. Now in Christian and Catholic denominations there are because they worship themselves and do not follow God. Well, then lady, don’t perform the marriages. No one gives a crap about your strike. And IMAKESENSE, thanks for the info, will have to look into this. Most of us do not care about the marriage deal, but I for one have a huge problem with their willful ignorance to be led down this path. What path? The false argument that they are denied a right. Instead of fighting for the right to marry and have their own unique definition of marriage (same rights, different definition that EQUALLY cannot be challenged by anyone else) they fight to take the one that defines a man and woman. In the meantime, in places it has passed, the nutcases come out of the woodwork and scream me too….polygamists, triads, beastiality, NAMBLA. Where does it all end? You set a precedent for anything falling into the definition, next thing you know employers are forced to provide insurance for Muslim men and their child brides, goats, etc. Yes, it sounds insane, but the me-too suits have already come up. And since you changed the definition once……the precedent is there to be possibly won. Again, most of us do not care, but get your own definition and then you can happily contribute to the divorce statistic. But your “strike” means nothing.

I move to challenge your assertions. I will try to make this make sense for you. What people do in their private life is non of your business. It’s that simple. If two gay people want to marry, that is their prerogative and not yours. It doesn’t affect your life. Gay people don’t come knocking on your door and ask you to participate with them, they just want the same rights and freedoms you have.
I realize that modern day conservative dogma mandates you must label everything that doesn‘t follow your party’s agenda as “liberal” nonsense but this is an issue of personal liberty and freedom. I don’t think “conservatives” know what freedom means anymore. So please dismount your high horse and let people be people, they aren’t forcing you to do anything but to let them be free to live their lives the way you freely live yours. It’s only an issue because no one wants to just let people be free. You feel so silly need to “hold on” to values of the 1800‘s like they’re going to work in the 21st century. The Christian Right only feels persecuted because they can’t have their archaic beliefs remain law of the land. This isn‘t Iran and we aren’t a theocracy. It‘s funny how the right blasts Iran for its infringing on freedom but doesn’t hesitate to do it to their own fellow countryman.

@TimeToTurnToTheLibertarians ~ You must be a bit confused, you see when gay/ lesbian/ transgender people want to take an institution that IS and ALWAYS has been defined as “A union between a man and woman” as ancient as mankind’s history itself, and then by attaching their misguided movement to it and changing it‘s entire definition by virtue of using it’s sacred oath (all ordained by God to point to procreation to co-create a family hence fulfilling the first great commandment, “Be fruitful and multiply”)…hmmm doesn’t sound like “What they do in the privacy of their own home” does it?!

Their weak argument of equal rights when in fact it‘s ’special’ rights just like all the other existing institutions in this country that segregate us and divide us (not the people, I love them, just hate the so-called spokespeople that appoint themselves for them, telling them their oppressed and not getting equal rights and then in the very next breath telling them they cannot succeed like everyone else, that they need ‘THEIR’ help and handouts constantly and by doing so in fact define them as not being equal)…such hypocrites, such wolf‘s in sheep’s clothing, such dishonest, selfish, vain attempts at forcing a viewpoint through an imagined plight and attacking others beliefs and sacred ways at the same time they say they’re being attacked. It is not a sin to be gay, intimate contact with a member of the same sex or someone your not married to is. Obviously same sex marriages are not condoned either
      Paul said in Romans 1:26-27
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
I don‘t suspect God’s blessings are on this church. Romans 3:23 , Romans 10:9 through faith in the ressurection-willingness-surrender may the Holy Spirit guied us in the path He has for us according to His will. My personal responsibility is to despise the sin from within, look for opportunities to give unselfish service and sacrafice to my brothers and sisters. Reveal Jesus presence in me through my actions. FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD

Decades ago several of my dear friends were literally kicked out of a SBC because their alcoholic husbands divorced them. Notice; NOT the errant husbands were kicked out, but the BIBLE-believing, CHRISTIAN women were “excommunicated”. I cannot get my mind “around” / to accept the fact that that same denomination now has women “pastors’, and worse than that women who defy GOD’s laws and directions. I think I’ll just go back to sleep now for a few more decades. Gee whiz!

To those who were offended by my use of UMC: sorry. Never, ever occurred to me it could be anything other than UMC or Episcopal Churches. *sigh*

And, to whomever I offended by the use of “with all my heart”: tough! When I use that phrase it means the same to me as the oath of office of a US SEAL or any other special branch of the military! It means “with all my heart and soul and strength and might and training and ability so help me GOD.” Get it, now? Good!

This is a joke, right? A lesbian minister threatens to stop performing weddings until the NC legislature okays gay marriage? Let her stop. Who cares? Remember the kid’s threat – “Ill hold my breath until you do what I want.” Good. Let the church not have any more weddings. Kinda what conservatives want anyway, isn’t it? Like I really would rather be married by a lesbian preacher than a real one. Can you say “absurd?” I knew you could.

Works for me. If enough people leave her congregation she will no longer have a church and will be replaced. It is not like a franchise deal. If this is the life style men/women choose for themselves, while I may not agree, it is their choice. Marriage is a different story – civil union is an option.

Sadly, this is not joke. This church has always been an activist church. In the late 60s the Sunday School class I was in did nothing but discuss their protesting in the city. It never seemed to be a real church. This minister is always protesting. She seems very childish to me.

Encinom…it is not just in the old testament about homosexuals. It cites several times in the new testament that neither fornicators,, adulterers homosexuals or sodimites will enter into the kingdom of God. But it’s probalbly nothing for the libs to be porn stars and have a side job as a pastor. Heck, with that kind of mentality, you could be a serial killer and be a pastor. What a freakin joke.

Unfortunately it isn’t a joke. North Carolina is a hot-seat for Progressive Liberals. The cities, especially, are rife with them – especially Asheville, the self-proclaimed “San Francisco of the East Coast”. It’s only a matter of time before the legislature caves to these people and passes a gay marriage law state-wide. Hopefully it won’t be accomplished while the Republicans control both houses, but I’m not holding my breath.

ANY person who attends a so-called Christian church with a homosexual pastor IS INSANE. They are no better than the Muslims who waste their whole life jumping through the crazy Islam hoops only to end up in Hell anyway, they should have at least enjoyed this life. Whatever these twits are doing in these so-called Christian churches with the homosexual pastors makes God sick, it sickens Him.

“Do we, Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, want to continue to participate in offering religious ceremonies that carry with them civil and human rights that are not afforded to all people?”

I wonder about people like her sometimes… with that statement it‘s a wonder they just don’t transform themselves into an “everything goes” congregation like teaching buddhism, atheism, wicca etc. I mean aren’t those groups being “discriminated against” at your church because aren’t their ideas deserving of equality?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. What kind of a Christian would even go to a church like that. But if you notice, thery were kicked out of the Baptist Association a long time ago. I didn’t think Baptists would allow blatant lawlessness. But to answer the question…a “liberal christian” which really is an oxymoron.

Sweet! Now if only she would refuse to “pastor” them as well. Obviously she should spend her time looking to the word of God and repent of her rebellion. We are all sinners but some of us are decieved and think our particular sin is ok.

Her church, her choice. If the parishioners don’t like her stance, they can fire her and hire a new pastor. Gay marriage should be handled at the local and state levels. I will add this though, people should be able to give their money and belongings to whoever they wish. You should also be able to give permission to people you would like to come visit you in the hospital. If the sick aren’t able, their family can vet visitors. Just a thought.

If we are talking about a living will, I believe you are definitely right. Although, I was under the impression that if I was gay and died, that my belongings wouldn’t automatically go to my partner. Is a JOTP marriage considered under holy matrimony? Isn’t there an argument for legal partnership? I may be wrong and don’t have the time to look it up right now. I’ll try if I have time tomorrow and get back to you. I assume for most people it is a religious argument and not a legal one.

I don’t see this as anything except grandstanding. She is essentially saying “I won‘t give you something that you can get from a lot of other places until society gives me something that I can’t get anywhere else.” It isn’t the strongest position to be in – if you were in her congregation and wanted to get married wouldn’t you just go somewhere else? She can’t keep a straight couple from getting married, she just won’t officiate.
