‘Levels Unseen’: U.S. Poverty Rate on Track To Be Highest Since 1960s

(The Blaze/AP) — The ranks of America’s poor are on track to climb to levels unseen in nearly half a century, according to the Associated Press, erasing gains from any sensible economic policies in recent decades.

Census figures for 2011 will be released this fall in the critical weeks ahead of the November elections, and Tom Blumer at Newsbusters suspects the Associated Press’ lengthy write-up is being released now so it doesn’t have to be given as much attention right before the election.

“It looks like the strategy is to get a comprehensive report out on how bad things are in July when few are paying attention, and then to give the official report short shrift when it arrives in mid-September,” he wrote.

The Associated Press reportedly surveyed more than a dozen economists, think tanks and academics, both nonpartisan and those with known liberal or conservative leanings, and found a broad consensus: The official poverty rate will rise from 15.1 percent in 2010, climbing as high as 15.7 percent. Several predicted a more modest gain, but even a 0.1 percentage point increase would put poverty at the highest level since 1965.

Poverty is spreading at record levels across many groups, from underemployed workers and suburban families to the poorest of the poor. More discouraged workers are giving up on the job market, leaving them vulnerable as unemployment aid begins to run out. Suburbs are seeing increases in poverty, including in such political battlegrounds as Colorado, Florida and Nevada, where voters are coping with a new norm of living hand to mouth.

“I grew up going to Hawaii every summer. Now I’m here, applying for assistance because it’s hard to make ends meet. It’s very hard to adjust,” said Laura Fritz, 27, of Wheat Ridge, Colo., describing her slide from rich to poor as she filled out aid forms at a county center. Since 2000, large swaths of Jefferson County just outside Denver have seen poverty nearly double.

Fritz says she grew up wealthy in the Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch, but fortunes turned after her parents lost a significant amount of money in the housing bust. Stuck in a half-million dollar house, her parents began living off food stamps and Fritz’s college money evaporated. She tried joining the Army but was injured during basic training.

Now she’s living on disability, with an infant daughter and a boyfriend, Garrett Goudeseune, 25, who can’t find work as a landscaper. They are struggling to pay their $650 rent on his unemployment checks and don’t know how they would get by without the extra help as they hope for the job market to improve.

In an election year dominated by discussion of the middle class, Fritz’s case highlights a dim reality for the growing group in poverty.

“The issues aren’t just with public benefits. We have some deep problems in the economy,” said Peter Edelman, the director of the Georgetown Center on Poverty, Inequality and Public Policy admits.

The predictions for 2011 are based on separate AP interviews, supplemented with research on suburban poverty from Alan Berube of the Brookings Institution and an analysis of federal spending by the Congressional Research Service and Elise Gould of the Economic Policy Institute.

The analysts’ estimates suggest that some 47 million people in the U.S., or 1 in 6, were “poor” last year. An increase of one-tenth of a percentage point to 15.2 percent would tie the 1983 rate, the highest since 1965. The highest level on record was 22.4 percent in 1959, when the government began calculating poverty figures.

Though the reported unemployment rate reportedly improved from 9.6 percent in 2010 to 8.9 percent in 2011, the employment-population ratio remained largely unchanged, meaning many discouraged workers just stopped looking for work.

Food stamp rolls, another indicator of poverty, also grew.

Demographers speculate:

-Poverty will remain above the pre-recession level of 12.5 percent for many more years. Several predicted that peak poverty levels – 15 percent to 16 percent – will last at least until 2014, and a jobless rate persistently above 6 percent with weak wage growth.

-Suburban poverty, already at a record level of 11.8 percent, will continue to increase.

-Part-time or underemployed workers, who saw a record 15 percent poverty in 2010, will rise to a new high.

-Poverty among people 65 and older will remain at historically low levels, buoyed by Social Security cash payments.

-Child poverty will increase from its 22 percent level in 2010.

Analysts also believe that the poorest in the nation, defined as those at 50 percent or less of the poverty level, will remain near its peak level of 6.7 percent.

“I’ve always been the guy who could find a job. Now I’m not,” said Dale Szymanski, 56, a Teamsters Union forklift operator and convention hand who lives outside Las Vegas in Clark County. In a state where unemployment ranks highest in the nation, the Las Vegas suburbs have seen a particularly rapid increase in poverty from 9.7 percent in 2007 to 14.7 percent.

“You keep thinking it’s going to turn around. But I’m stuck,” he said.

The 2010 poverty level was $22,314 for a family of four, and $11,139 for an individual, based on an official government calculation that includes only cash income, before tax deductions. It excludes capital gains or accumulated wealth, such as home ownership, as well as noncash aid such as food stamps and tax credits, which were expanded substantially under President Barack Obama’s stimulus package.

An additional 9 million people in 2010 would have been counted above the poverty line if food stamps and tax credits were taken into account.

Robert Rector, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, believes the social “safety net” has served its purpose and it is time to cut back. He notes that many government recipients live in decent-size homes, drive cars and own wide-screen TVs, and that the net may be preventing them from working.

People like Jose Gorrin, who lives in the western Miami suburb of Hialeah Gardens, are now deciding the best way to tackle the historic problem. Arriving from Cuba in 1980, Gorrin was able to earn a decent living as a plumber for years, providing for his children and ex-wife. But things turned sour in 2007 and in the past two years he has barely worked, surviving on the occasional odd job.

Holding a paper bag of still-warm bread he’d just bought for lunch, Gorrin said he hasn‘t decided whom he’ll vote for in November, expressing little confidence the presidential candidates can solve the nation’s economic problems. “They all promise to help when they’re candidates,” Gorrin said, adding, “I hope things turn around. I already left Cuba. I don’t know where else I can go.”

Associated Press writers Kristen Wyatt in Lakewood, Colo., Ken Ritter and Michelle Rindels in Las Vegas, Laura Wides-Munoz in Miami and AP Deputy Director of Polling Jennifer Agiesta contributed to this report.

Another round of thought into the magazine… Eventually those who would keep your name on a list of supporters for your 2nd amendment rights could easily with the stroke of a pen be subpoenaed to provide that list to those who would seek to deprive you of your rights. All Americans are on some sort of list. Smile at the camera lady, when you run that red light. RPV’s flying over head and they can night vision and impact your skull. No powder needed. Strange Orwellian world we have now. A passerby picks up a “kids” airplane on the ground and walks away, Apparently indifferent to the individual lying a few meters off to the side.

Probably not the only one those things are expensive Point two, maybe because your parents spent money going to Hawaii every year is one of the reasons you can’t manage your current financials. Odds are in Colorado your the product of liberal parents who made money using capitalism with no thought for the future because someone (the government) would always back you up. I ear that this is the new “middle class” that O keeps talking about. He doesn’t want to give up his money, he wants you to give up yours. Wait until he requires work from those on Welfare, just for the government bennies. He’ll have riots. He keeps talking about government jobs…can you say WPA from the depression? My grandpa on one side dug ditches, the other “job shared” working digging basements (he worked half the day, and someone else worked the other half so they owed no benefits, just the paycheck). And O has the poor snowed with how the government will get them back up to the level they’re used to…yea, right. And part of the problem with the little rich girl is she has an infant and a BOYFRIEND, not a husband.

Comrades such negativity towards Dear Leader, this isn’t what he desires for America at all! We are still a FIRST class society with some poor. Dear Leader desires for us to atone for our “sins” (in his eyes and the eyes of the Communists surrounding him) and become more in line with the rest of the world!
So vote for Dear Leader so he can complete his mission and we can all join the commonwealth of THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES. Basically, you haven’t seen anything yet!
Like most Americans you probably haven’t taken the time to read the important books that Dear Leader has read and believes in, like DAS Kapital, by Karl Marx. Anyway, the middle class that Dear Leader loves and wants to vote for him must be destroyed completely so Communism can florish!
Now think about this, when was the last time a died in the wool communist ever gave up power to a non-communist?
I’ll give you a hint, the number is very, very, small.

Taxpayers: PUT OUT THE DAMN FIRE!!!!

Liberals: NO PROBLEM, WE’LL JUST ADD MORE OIL TO SMOTHER IT OUT! IT WILL BE OKAY DON’T WORRY!

T: OMG!! Get the hell out!!!

L: What? Oxygen can’t exist in oil! And it’s all we have! Just leave it to us!

Instead we have some Americans in support of the Liberals, thinking:

Lib Supporters: You know what you should do? Use the Race Card! That will put that fire out! That will solve all the problems with this fire!

T: Huh!??!? What?!! What in the hell are you thinking!!?

LS: Look around you! See everything burned to the ground?? Why does it have to be black!? Why can’t it be white or yellow?! So it needs to be brought to everyone’s attention and playing the race card will put the fire out!

T: OMG!!!! You freaking idiots!!! We’re all suffering here! Who cares about everything being black from the fire!?!

By know means will it be a simple win in November, but we got to have faith that more people around the country sees what’s going on and have the common sense not to let them continue with this foolishness.

When you take the time to weight what we have versus what we don’t have, it’s no secret what occurred and what needs to be done. Liberals don’t even have a legitimate excuse nor reasoning behind their policies, but to play the damn race card at every turn possible! Every Democrat should take a step back and ask themselves, “Is that all I am, a race card?” If their answer is yes, they have what they deserve already. That’s their fair share, because that’s all they recognize themselves as being in life, a race card.

No human should want so little in life, to be a race card. What the hell can a race card do for you that you couldn’t have done for yourself? What can a government ran by incompetence do for you, that you couldn’t have done as a child? Our children can’t even operate a lemonade stand for crying out loud, for having to be harassed by grown ass adults using screwed up rules to shut them down! Liberals, ask yourselves, is this really your vision of America?

I felt back in ‘08, that Romney had a plan to fix this issue. America went dumb, forced him out because of his faith, we know the rest of the story. I believe he’ll have one again, should America use some common sense and see Obama for what he truly is, an absolute farce of a leader. He’s a Marxist at worse, a damn fool at the very least. And the fact that he‘ll lie his ass off to keep a job he’s totally inept at, never mind unqualified to be in the seat for….

    America, don’t do it again.

When you bring in unemployable immigrants from Somalia, etc to add to the welfare rolls (&obamas aunt uncle et al) along with the Mexicans & others you naturally have people who have their hand out for “aid”. Now on election day these people only need to show up with a utility bill to get to vote, they are not asked if they are citizens with right to vote. Almost all will vote for the handout not the hand up. Voter fraud stole the 2008 election & they are counting on same thing in 2012.

State of the Union Address 2010 –
Obama Speech “Excerpt” May 25, 2012

Let me repeat: we cut taxes. We cut taxes for 95% of working families. We cut taxes for small businesses. We cut taxes for first-time homebuyers. We cut taxes for parents trying to care for their children. We cut taxes for 8 million Americans paying for college.

As a result, millions of Americans had more to spend on gas, and food, and other necessities, all of which helped businesses keep more workers. And we haven’t raised incometaxes by a single dime on a single person. Not a single dime.

Because of the steps we took, there are about two million Americans working right now who would otherwise be unemployed. 200,000 work in construction and clean energy. 300,000 are teachers and other education workers.

Tens of thousands are cops, firefighters, correctional officers, and first responders. And we are on track to add another one and a half million jobs to this total by the end of the year.

The plan that has made all of this possible, from the tax cuts to the jobs, is the Recovery Act. That’s right – the Recovery Act, also known as the Stimulus Bill. Economists on the left and the right say that this bill has helped saved jobs and avert disaster.

No surprise to me. Those in their late 30s to mid 50s have been hit the hardest and I unfortunatly am a part of this group. Don’t blame BO other then he made things astronomically worse. Folks find a way to survive and strive despite the situation. Don‘t take any government moneys since I’ve been lucky enough not to have to (combination of several things), but do understand and simphathize with those that have no choice. There‘s only one solution and it’s time for me top post it once again. :)

First of all, we have to understand that we are going broke. My solution: we got to recall all our military from all foreign lands (and I mean all) and cut it by a third to a half and the remaining troops main mission should be guarding the borders as they are Constitutionally demanded too. Now that would save a heck of a lot of money. Let the rest of the world take care of their own business; we can no longer be the police force of the world. Domestically, I would eliminate the Income tax and IRS and go to a National Sales Tax model. Less entities to collect from so that will further reduce the need for government workers saving more money. Cont….

Cont…..Also, before we even had income tax, we got most of our money from tariffs and other fees. Repeal NAFTA/GATT and bring the tariffs back. Short term, things will cost more. Long term, the jobs will return (they have too if companies want to sell their goods to us at a reasonable cost to them). NAFTA/GATT just gave them incentives to leave. That’s my take; want to hear yours.

Do have to add since that we need to drill our own oil and remove all the idiotic rules/regulations that have stymied business where it makes sense. Get rid of all the nonsense rules created by the Obama Administration would be a good start. A not to the Paul folks in that we need to bring back either a gold, silver, or other precious material backing for the dollar. There is not freaking reason to pay $4.00 plus for a Whopper when it was one $Buck in 1992 for instance. Got to nip this one in the bud. Two men…And you will decide which one to vote for, Why? Are you already in the yoke of the master? Why does it come down to voting for one in the same? This ‘choice” is two sides of the same coin. You should have been marching down Pennsylvanian avenue months ago. With Mothers, Fathers, children. U.S. forces know the difference between Family and the OWS crowd. Waiting till you think your making a difference on November second is not what the founders provided for. Your “representative” voices are no longer heard. Does it take a second shot? Like the one heard round the world by king George 243 years ago? Well are you Americans or servants to a new tyrant?

Ok Paulbot. There is a big difference between these 2 men. One is a communist, one is not. and that is enough for me. Romney gets my vote.

@Freedombeliever…I think for myself. The warning from history which we were warned about is:

      1. Complacency
      2.Hedonism and getting too comfortable
3.Believing that the republic could not be reversed (Denial) of attack from within
      4. Lacking the intestinal fortitude of the 53 constitutionalists (most were martyred)
I am sorry had to use my interpretation. I am not gifted like those who addressed the Continental Congress.

@ Freedombeliever; Two choices. One openly communist. Groomed by communists for decades. And you really think that they could not pull off a Manchurian candidate part two In a victory with a Romney? Grass roots revelation that was discussed by Beck and other Patriots HAS fallen on deaf ears. So squeaky clean, Mitt is the antithesis needed to pull this communist fiasco off. All that’s missing is dipping your index finger in purple paint after casting your “vote.” and waving it a a frightened world.

With news like this I suppose Obama voters will think twice……oops they need to think first before they can do it a second time. What else does it take? I suppose if you have a union/government job you think you have it made…..but when it collapses under the weight of this debt you will be screwed too.

They think they have job security because they may be protected by terms but terms don’t last forever. Time to show they are just the same as the common man and fire them all.

Obama voters won’t get this news. It won’t be reported. That’s the rub. And what is so seriously wrong with the media. They will NOT report on anything damaging to barry. And that is scary because the average John Q voter just turns on ABC,CBS,NBC for their news and will only hear about what a great president he is, even though he has not done one single thing positive in 3 1/2 years – NOT ONE!

In less than four years Obama and the Progressives have drained 40% of the nations wealth; sent soaring the levels of poverty, and all but crushed the nation in massive mounds of debt unseen of and unheard of before. If we do take the nation back in Nov, and survive any moves by Obama and the leftists to seize final power or scorched earth, we face a multi generation effort to undo the damage done in this time.

Yet the one great hope found in that worst case, of generations to undo the damage, is that we are AMERICANS, and use to doing the impossible. So it can be done, after all we did put a man on the moon, so how much harder can the next “impossible” be for us to accomplish?

This has been the End Game of the Liberal Left since the Great Society: To get more Americans on the Government dole than pay to Fund the Government. The former are, by definition, stupid enough to believe that MORE Liberalism will “solve” the problem and will therefore, loyally, vote Democrat every election. The tipping point has finally been reached, or Damn close to it. America will not be overrun and devoured by Zombies, she will be overrun and devoured by the Stupid.

Considering the calculated definition of the “Poverty Rate” has been revised upward, in real dollars, for my entire lifetime, don’t worry at all about this report. It will be “revised away” before you know it.
