Lib Writer’s Al Jazeera Op-Ed: ‘Let’s Forget 9/11′ & ‘Haven’t We Had Enough of Ourselves?’

Tom Engelhardt Urges Americans to Forget September 11thTom Engelhardt, a fellow at the left-leaning The Nation Institute and a professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, says it’s time for the United States to “bag” remembrance of the September 11 attacks.

In an op-ed for Al Jazeera English, Engelhardt calls for an end to all things 9/11 and asks, “haven’t we had enough of ourselves?”

In Engelhardt’s view, there’s no need to read the names of those lost, to bring past and current presidents together, to honor first responders or to have moments of silence.

It doesn’t take long, though, for his thoughts to extend far beyond the reaches of the horrific terror attacks that took America by storm just 10 years ago. In dismissing the need to memorialize, he writes:

If we had wanted a memorial to 9/11, it would have been more appropriate to leave one of the giant shards of broken tower there untouched.

Apparently, Engelhardt sees the way in which America handles the anniversaries of September 11 as weak. Or, at the least, he views the observance and behaviors as inappropriate at this juncture. “If we have any respect for history or humanity or decency left,” he writes, “isn’t it time to rip the Band-Aid off the wound, to remove 9/11 from our collective consciousness?”

Regardless of one’s political opinion (and Engelhardt’s can certainly be described as left-of-center), it‘s practically impossible to wipe such a horrible event off of one’s mind — let alone the minds of a collective society.

While Engelhardt knows that such a prospect isn’t possible, he wonders why America won’t stop exploiting “the anniversary remembrances,” writing, “We could stop using it to make ourselves feel like a far better country than we are.”

But none of these thoughts appear to be rooted in a frustration with 9/11 itself. Instead, Engelhardt seems to see a connection between observance and federal policies he vehemently dislikes. He writes:

No more invocations of those attacks to explain otherwise inexplicable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and our oh-so-global war on terror. No more invocations of 9/11 to keep the Pentagon and the national security state flooded with money. No more invocations of 9/11 to justify every encroachment on liberty, every new step in the surveillance of Americans, every advance in pat-downs and wand-downs and strip downs that keeps fear high and the homeland security state afloat.

He contends that the victims of 9/11 have been “misused” and he laments the blood that is on America’s hands as a result of the Middle Eastern wars that have been launched over the past decade. Additionally, he calls the attacks “in every sense abusive, horrific acts.”

Tom Engelhardt Urges Americans to Forget September 11th“Abusive” is an adjective some would say is too mild to address what occurred in America just 10 years ago. An accidental use of a weaker descriptive? Possibly. But as the op-ed goes on, other instances of downplaying what occurred on 9/11 are glaring. For example, consider the following (highlights are mine):

The facts of 9/11 are, in this sense, simple enough. It was not a nuclear attack. It was not apocalyptic. The cloud of smoke where the towers stood was no mushroom cloud. It was not potentially civilisation-ending. It did not endanger the existence of our country – or even of New York City. Spectacular as it looked and staggering as the casualty figures were, the operation was hardly more technologically advanced than the failed attack on a single tower of the World Trade Center in 1993 by Islamists using a rented Ryder truck packed with explosives. [...]

Despite the screaming headlines, Ground Zero wasnt Pearl Harbor. Al-Qaeda wasnt Japan, nor was it Nazi Germany. It wasnt the Soviet Union. It had no army, nor finances to speak of, and possessed no state…

Tom Engelhardt Urges Americans to Forget September 11thAfter delivering this blow, Engelhardt reinforces his view that the U.S. is “tattered,” in decline, “teetering at the edge of financial disaster,“ has a mess of an economy and is experiencing ”weird weather,” among other negative statements. And don’t let him catch you calling Ground Zero “hallowed ground.“ Engelhardt believes that it is ”defiled ground” and that it is we, as Americans, who have caused it to be so.

He laments: “It could have been different.” To Engelhardt, 9/11 was exploited by politicians to secure “a blank check for the American war state.” He continues:

It’s a terrible thing to ask those still missing the dead of 9/11 to forgo the public spectacle that accompanies their memory, but worse is what we have: repeated solemn ceremonies to the ongoing health of the American war state and the wildest dreams of Osama bin Laden.

Engelhardt’s piece is sure to inspire controversy. Its declaration that America is immensely flawed and its seemingly dismissive — though cautious — undertones may infuriate those who read it.

In the end, he is entitled to his opinions, though they certainly are far off from the mainstream. Ironically, his comments mirror those of New York Times’ columnist Paul Krugman, who called memory of 9/11 “an occasion of shame.”

I don’t agree with this liberal, but I‘d say you should read his article in it’s entirety. His main point is, “The attacks of September 11, 2001 were in every sense abusive, horrific acts. And the saddest thing is that the victims of those suicidal monstrosities have been misused here ever since under the guise of pious remembrance.”

He’s got a point there. From left to right, it’s all been highly politicized. We need some perspective. Over 500,000 have died in traffic accidents since 9/11 in the USA. In addition to this over 1,000 die every month in homicides. Not saying we shouldn’t memorialize it, just saying it’s way out of proporation. For crying out loud we didn’t build a WW2 memorial until 2004! Half a million American troops died in WW2! Cost of WW2 memorial? About $180 million. Cost of 9/11 memorial? About $600 million plus billions in government subsidies to reconstruct buildings that private industry didn’t feel a good investment.

“[I]sn’t it time to rip the Band-Aid off the wound, to remove 9/11 from our collective consciousness?”

      WHY?????

I mean, why haven’t you written about removing the band aid regarding the Crusades which you still lament today? Or how about the Holocaust that occurred about 70 years ago? Or how about slavery that occurred 150 years ago? Why not advocate removing those band-aids?

Why is it always white Christians who must not remember a hurt although it is most recent than what any of the other tribal crybabies whine about?

Whoops! Bioengineer just suggested that you read the whole article and look at the context before you judge! What is he smoking?!?

But really folks, what was the point to Billy Hallowell’s “article” here? All her did was take this other 9/11 article and selectively quote from it–why can’t we just have the original? Do we really need Hallowell to distill the argument into a series of block quotes?

Here is something that Englehart says and Hallowell, for some reason, doesn’t quote:
“This country has become dependent on the dead of 9/11 – who have no way of defending themselves against how they have been used”

And he’s right! What Englehart is saying is that there is an awful lot of “honoring” going on, but very little RESPECT for the memory of the dead. Rather, as Bioengineer says, the dead are being repeatedly politicized for others’ gain.

Odd how Hallowell’s quoting and summarizing misses the main point of the argument. I think he may need to take a freshman-year composition course if he can’t handle these basic writing tasks….

No surprise a leftist professor wants the rest of America to “forget” about the unpleasant realities of 9/11.
So by this moron’s standards, we should also forget about what happened on 12/7 n Pearl Harbor… or what happened in Nazi Germany in 1939, as well as Soviet Russia in 1911.

This evil college professor should be laughed out of a job… but we know the “smart” folks at UC Berkley would miss him too much.

@Berbel73, no, I did back it up with facts. Let me connect the dots for you though since you apparently can’t. It’s very simple, the security situation is blown WAAAAAAAY out of proportion. Homeland Security, TSA, Patriot Act, estimates are that over $5 trillion has been spent on GWOT alone. All of this over 19 guys with boxcutters. ?!? Think about that. 19 guys with boxcutters. And not a one of them was Iraqi or Afghan. They didn’t even speak the same language as the people in Afghanistan. They couldn’t communicate with an Afghan any better than you could. 9/11 has been propagandized as a tool to fear everybody into multiplying the size of our government and shredding the Constitution here at home. Again, not saying we shouldn’t memorialize 9/11, just saying it’s WAAAAAAY out of proportion with reality. It’s completely hypocritical to cite the Constitution and attack the libs for entitlements while supporting other things that are just as unconstitutional and just as wasteful. The guy that wrote this article is an idiot for sure, but most of you guys railing against him are simply the other side of the same darn coin. Your rhetoric is just as dumb. Get a grip!

I am not down playing the event ( I still have to turn the channel when I see the towers on fire or I lose it) but do think that the families may want to mourn in their own way but feel like they have to participate in these large memorials. That Liberal Engelhardt needs to understand one of two things about 9/11:

He can either lump it or leave the nation.

9/11 is a day that WE the PEOPLE of the UNITED STATES were ATTACKED.
9/11 is a day that WE AWOKE to the ENEMIES WITHOUT.
9/11 is a day that WE BEGAN PAYMENT DUE of the ATTACKERS.

9/11/2011 is the day WE the PEOPLE RECOGNIZE we fight the ENEMY WITHIN.
November/2012 WE TAKE THE NATION BACK.

If you do not like this great land, or respect other peoples oppinions, and the freedoms we are endowed by the Creator with; then you do have the freedom to leave and never come back.

      Hahahhah…

Pearl Harbor: FDR ordered a blockade of the Japanese oil supply — they were trying to loosen the strangle-hold we (undeclared participants in the hostilities of 1939-1941) held on them. FDR and the Naval command in the continental United States knew the Japanese were on their way to Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were not “running silent”. Lots of radio chatter was picked up — the only one surprised was the commandant of the Pearl Harbor naval station, whom the command had neglected to notify that there was a threat.

Lusitania — Loaded with weapons bound for Britain, after the Germans told us in no uncertain terms that if that ship sailed, loaded the way it was (and they had intel at the time — don‘t think they didn’t,) that it would go to the bottom. This is a game the Wilson administration played to get us into that war.

USS Maine — Blown up in Havana harbor BY A COAL BIN EXPLOSION. Not an act of war, but sure was convenient!

Gulf of Tonkin — Same sort of thing as the USS Maine.

Are you seeing a pattern here? Propaganda is NOT fact, or is only about HALF THE STORY.

I cannot figure that out either. I would not stay anywere I hated. Does anyone know why people stay when their hate is all they have. That they make a living out of it. Take John Kerry, he came back from the Vietnam war and told so many lies about the military that he should have been charged. But the libs in Mass. love him so I guess they agree with him. This president sends him all over the world to advance his opinion. Just like he did during that war.

This coming from a leftist, socialist, white-guilt, slavery-laden, racist. We’ve been hearing about the atrocities of slavery for over 150 years from the likes of this moron and his ilk. America will NEVER forget the heinous acts of cowards that killed innocent children, women and men on our own soil. You, sir, are not a true American speaking such words of disdain.

I’d like to think the US would respond aggressively to another attack, but with loons like the ones in Washington now I think we’d just apologize profusely for provoking Islamic rage. I‘m afraid we’ll just have to leave the glass making to the Israelis.

Put a 50-foot high bronze statue with 20 Muslims hanging by their necks from the beams of the Twin Towers and I might consider toning it down, A bit. Probably not.

@Nuffsaid … too few feet high and far too few Muslims. And that should read, ” … hanging by their necks after being dipped in bacon grease …”.
Englehardt and other brain dead puppets like him never cease to amaze me when making comments like “inexplicable war in Afghanistan”. Inexplicable?!! You dumb waste of flesh and gutless blood! No, Tom (!), 9/11 WAS our 21st century Pearl Harbor in every way possible. And suggesting that we forget 9/11 is like saying we should forget the 4th of July. September 11, 2001 was our rebirth, reminding us in the most horrific of ways how precious this nation is and that we must rededicate our efforts to see that it remains the strongest, the most enduring and the most endearing nation of all. Your words and your books border on US treason, Tom. Careful that you don‘t dislodge yourself from Al Jazeera’s teat. Your head-of-the-class status might soon be changed to beheaded-by-the-class.
      Forget 9/11 ?!! Forget you !!

I like the idea posted about using a piece of the original wall, with the statue of the firefighters raising the flag. But that would be WAY to intaginistic for the PC crowd. I memorial is nice if, imo, not right for the situation. I hope the museum is better.

I have Al Jazeera as a channel on my Roku.

Surprisingly, they‘re showing a LOT of stuff going on in the Middle East that doesn’t get shown here. Not all of it is “pro-Iran“ and ”anti-American”. It is surprisingly balanced.

You should try it some time. It surprised me. Since Fox and the other major networks choose only to put useless little snippets of ridiculous shows on their Roku channels, and do not have live feeds, Al Jazeera (and Russia Today, but that one gets a little too propaganda-ish for me at times) are the only “news-all-the-time” outlets I have.

The depth and breadth of their reporting is far better than anything you’ll see on the major networks.

The libs were saying that just days after 9/11. LOL

In 1968 one of the Poli Sci 101 classes was being taught by a Muslim at the University of Oklahoma…they’ve been in our society for a long time. He was abundantly cautious of what he said and did teach the right things, at the time.

Perhaps he would like to see Sharia law replace U.S. law.

He’s a fool, and certainly no historian. He‘s the one wanting to put a ’band-aid’ on the wound, rather take one off, by wanting us to move on, nothing to see here, get over it (and ourselves). Rather than deal with the problems that created the tragedy (Islamic fascism, lack of governmental agency cooperation, etc.), he’d rather put a walkway over the ruins like we did the USS Arizona, and let it just sit there rusting in the wind.

Instead, how about we do this: memorialize those who died, comfort their loved ones and friends, never forget it happened, and do something to make damned well sure it never happens again! These thoughts probably never even entered his over-educated mind.
