Liberal Site Tries to Tie Shocking Muslim-Taunting Video to Respected Conservative

When news surfaced that radical UK cleric Anjem Choudary was going to stage a Shariah4America rally at the White House on Thursday, it’s fair to say many expected some explosive video to surface. Especially considering counter protesters planned rallies, too. Choudary canceled his rally. The counter protesters did not. At least one shocking video still surfaced.

But that video, posted by liberal-leaning Talking Points Memo (TPM), blames the actions in the video on conservative Frank Gaffney, a frequent commenter on Muslim issues and American security. That connection, Gaffney’s organization says, is a “total lie.”

First the video, from TPM’s website, which author Ryan Reilly describes as a lone praying Muslim being “surrounded by a large group of protesters who shouted an array of insults at him: mocking him for drinking Starbucks coffee, telling him to go back to his country, and even throwing tiny crosses at his feet as he prayed.”

Reilly captured the video himself, and it does show counter protesters disgustingly mocking and taunting the Muslim man:

According to Reilly, the Muslim man is a White House regular: “A police officer on the scene told me the man showed up to pray at the White House every couple days.”

Reilly goes on to associate the taunters with conservative Frank Gaffney from the Center for Security Policy. Twice Reilly links the harassers to Gaffney and his ilk, and even uses “Frank Gaffney” as a tag for the post.

But were the people shown actually harassing the Muslim man really with Gaffney?

“Absolutely not,” Center for Security Policy Communications Director Dave Reaboi tells The Blaze. “This is a complete misrepresentation.”

Reaboi doesn’t deny that he, Gaffney, and the center were at the White House. But, he adds, they weren’t there for a rally. Rather, they held a press conference regarding the conflict between Shariah law and the Constitution — it didn’t have a religious or “Jesus” element, like the incident in the video. Further supporting that claim: Reaboi says he’s Jewish.

In fact, the group says it secured a permit to be on White House grounds and had the Park Service specifically change the permit application to note the group was having a press conference, not a rally.

Indeed, a story on Foxnews.com from yesterday notes that the center was slated to hold a “counter press conference” that was even set to feature a speaker who is a non-radical Muslim. Multiple press releases sent out before the event also confirm it was a non-religious event. It seems natural, then, for the center to defend itself on the grounds that the abusers were religious in nature while its press conference was not.

According to Reaboi, the group seen in the video was actually part of the mob accompanying Florida’s burn-a-Koran pastor Terry Jones. Reaboi says he knows what Jones’s group looks like because it tried to co-opt the center’s press conference, with Jones himself at one point pulling out a bullhorn, standing on a nearby bench, and “treating us like we were his assembled crowd.”

They weren’t. And they made that clear.

“No, he’s not with us and he doesn’t have a permit,” Reaboi recalls telling the Park Service, who then relocated Jones and his group about a half a block away. Where’s that, you might ask?

“Exactly the same spot where the incident with the Muslim man occurred,” Reaboi says. He knows that, he explains, because he happened to see the Muslim man praying while he (Reaboi) was leaving the press conference, which ended about 40 minutes earlier. And while he didn’t see the actual incident occur, he recognizes some people in the video as the individuals who tried to crash the center’s press conference.

According to Reaboi, TPM did not try and contact Gaffney before linking him to the incident — an incident he calls “absolutely disgusting.”

The Blaze asked Reilly for comment and received an e-mail response from TPM’s managing editor, David Kurtz. “We stand behind our report,” he writes. “Our reporter personally observed numerous participants from the Gaffney-organized rally, including someone who spoke at that rally and who appears in the video we posted, becoming involved in the incident as the Gaffney rally broke up.”

We asked Reaboi to respond. He watched the video three times during our conversation and on the third time identified one sanctioned speaker in TPM’s video: Beverly Perlson of Band of Mothers. She’s seen holding up a sign in the background saying “Thank You Troops for Keeping Us Safe Since 9/11.”

But despite Perlson’s appearance, Reaboi stands by his claims.

“She clearly did not become involved in the incident,” he says. “You can see six or seven people doing things or saying things and becoming outrageous and she is not one of them. I don’t see any of our speakers taking part in any harassment.”

Perlson denies the charges, too. According to a statement provided to The Blaze, she was in the area trying to draw attention to her cause.

“I want my sign to remind the American people, whenever I can get it out there, to support our troops wherever they are,” she says. “When I see a camera, I try to get our message across and get our sign seen.”

As for TPM portraying Gaffney — a well-respected conservative — as the instigator of Muslim hate at a mixed event, Reaboi thinks that’s unfair.

And that may be a fair assessment. Someone holding a support-our-troops sign in the background during a controversial incident doesn‘t exactly mimic Saul holding the coats of Stephen’s stoners.

As for the rest of those featured in the video, couldn’t it be that some people were roving the area and might have meandered through the outdoor press conference, Jones’s gathering, and the incident?

“Of course,” Reaboi says. But, he adds, that doesn‘t mean those people’s actions can be directly linked to Gaffney and his “followers.” Especially considering there were other groups, such as Jones’s, present.

“There were many groups there protesting,” Reaboi recalls, noting that a couple Mexican groups showed up to coincide with the state visit from Mexican President Felipe Calderon. “To directly connect us to anything that went on is off the wall.”

Really? This is much ado about nothing. If it were a group of satanists throwing pentagrams at the feet of a praying Christian, it wouldn’t have made any news and if it were Muslims throwing crescents at the feet of someone Jewish, it might have actually been picked up as some act of bravery by some liberal press. It was distasteful but our society needs to grow some thick skin and get over it.

@Alex… I would actually call them more liberal than I would conservative. It would be a mistake to assume that just because they are anti-homosexual that they are conservative. The root of all conservatism is individual liberty. That would include the right of people to do things that you think are wrong. Westburrow’s aim would be to impose their world-view on society which is actually the liberal method. True conservative would not make a law respecting religion.

Just like Rambo said from the White House, “Never waste a good crisis”. So when the radical cleric cancelled the rally, the lib press naturally jumped at the chance to shoot video of a praying Muslim being harassed by other goof-balls and blame it on a conservative. That’s their playbook and fortunately, we all know about it now.

What we see in this video and is labeled as “Christian” in nature, is indeed, not at all in keeping with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus would have knelt beside him and prayed for both of their salvation and then split a loaf of bread with him. At the very least Christ would not have begrudged this man and taunted him in public. What you see here is NOT good Christians being good Christians.

They will do anything to demonize people even fabricating things we have seen with our own eyes as truth telling us its not real.

Like Beck has said (Im paraphrasing) “…what is solid will become liquid and whats liquid will be solid. They will tell you things you have seen and heard with your own eyes and ears isn’t real”

I personally have been victim of this, I have commented on things I have seen that are flat out real being told no thats not true it never happened! Heck Lawrence O’Donnell did it to Katy Abrams last year when she said she saw vid of candidate Obama talking about the end goal of healthcare overhaul was single payer. Anyone who has lived in a 3rd world country where muslims are always finiding a way to instigate a riot against other communities will tell you, what this man did on video is nothing new.
Long time ago, I was visiting India to attend a friend’s wedding , which was in an old part of the capital.
One day, muslims started rioting based on some rumor that someone had found a pig part near a mosque. Within minutes, there were muslim men and children, chuking rocks and burning cars and scooters on streets. When the police showed up, the muslims lined up shoulder to shoulder, blocked the narrow streets and alleyways by instantly performing sajda , making an inpenetrable wall. While the police in riot gear were halted by the prayer-line, the muslims behind the prayer line continued to throw rocks and burning rags at the police.
      This was in 1980s.

Will liberals stand with me, be consistent, and condemn people of their persuasion when they do illegal or irresponsible things? I would have defended this man if I would have been there. I am a Christian, and this display is disgusting to me. It shows a radical element in the Christian community, and shows how those radicals recruit. Shouting insults and dropping crosses in front of this man will in NO WAY make this man convert. I would love to have seen someone who is knowlegable, after telling the croud to shut their pie-holes and after this muslim’s prayers, take the man aside and have a nice conversation with him.
      Worked in “The Last Samuri”

On the other hand, this was supposed to be a day of “conflict” and this man showing up must have known that. Now, I don’t know his intent for being there, especially since someone identified him as “coming several times a week to pray at the White House” (how many of you read this whole story before posting?) But I have my doubts.
I personally believe that islam is the body of the anti-christ, but until the laws change, as a Marine, had I been there I would have cleared that mob away from him so he could pray in peace.

I will and must be consistent that if I am going to expect Muslims and liberals to denounce the unreasonable and wrong things their cohorts commit then will and must do the same or then I am being hypocritical, even if this was staged. It is a matter of how Jesus is represented to the world. Even if these people are not sincere believers (I certainly question this) we must denounce this action or we are no better than the liberals or Muslims who would persecute Christians in a similar way.

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5

Conservative site links nutritionist’s recommendations for healthier eating to Muslim Brotherhood plot, Sharia law, enslavement of all Americans, and death.

…he must not have gotten the memo that the islamo-fascist rally was postponed…I’m glad that Americans will not roll over and play dead like the Europeans in the face of sharia terrorists.

Yesterday I called some one a moron for having a different point of view than me… and instead of getting my point accross it was lost in anger over the word “moron”. Pretty sure nothing was resolved and comon groud was found… pretty much like this video. Regardless of who‘s side you’re on this kind of behavior is wrong.
And to “Leftiesaredangerous” I apologize for the name calling.

Well the Jones gang believed that fake Blaze story and here we go again. I bet they plan on having a pig roast on the 4th of July, too. They will find a giant Beach Boys concert instead of a million muslims! April Fools!

Bad Christians, dare you stand up for your religion. I guess Glenn and the Commie-Libs are saying we should take the example of the Muslims. You know, just before they scream out there god’s name (Allah) they murder innocent people.

Glenn and the Commie-Libs should show some of those great Muslim videos of love and peace, remember those old-time favorites of chopping heads off and the twin towers falling down.

The man bowing to the pavement is doing this as a form of agitation, howerver, a true Chrsitan would have welcomed the man to pray, and then asked him to pray to Jesus after he was finished, and part ways, or not. Maybe a dialogue could take place? Bottom line is neither side will budge in their beliefs, but to maintain respect of each other is paramount. Until the time they become violent here, I will treat them as brothers and sisters, after that, infidels.

First of all, everyone has a right to pray to whatever God they want. Accusing a Muslim of inciting a riot for praying is f’ing ridiculous. I’m a conservative and Christian, and I fully believe that Jesus would be disgusted in the way those people treated that man for *gasp* praying. That’s certainly not the way to treat a human being who has the same inalienable rights as you. And shame on you who make such snarky comments about someone exercising their right to pray. Who cares what time it is–and if you’re such a good Christian person, you should turn the other cheek rather than slinging insults and demeaning people. It’s idiots like you who give conservatives a horrible, horrible rep.

This is not only wrong, but very un-Christ like. Jesus would NOT have told anyone to do this. I hope these morons get called onto the carpet by their churches. Shame on them.

Just a follow up word to those who would condemn this self-proclaimed Christians with such bitterness and visible disgust. Jesus would also have compassion for them as well. He would confront their actions as I did in my other posts on this story, but as a rel Christian we must be careful to commit the sin Jesus exposed in the unmerciful servant or the elder brother sin in the prodigal son parable. Jesus confronted the religious Pharisees and yet still held out forgiveness for them without condemnation. It was Jesus who said he didn’t come to condemn the world but rather to convict it of sin, big big difference. Just a word of caution on our responses.

It’s obvious what happened. Anjem Choudary canceled his rally knowing that crazy people would come to throw Jesus’ name around in a crazy fashion making Christians look crazy. Jesus would probably say, “These, oh my, these are not my people.“ Just because your lips say to the waters ”come” nothing comes if your heart doesn’t say it.
