Liberal Talk Show Host: National Anthem Is an ‘Abomination’

Liberal talk show host Bill Press, perhaps best known for comparing Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally to “allowing Al Qaeda to hold a rally on September 11 at Ground Zero” while simultaneously bemoaning the “toxic” nature of talk radio and its destructive effects on civility, has let loose another doozy.
This time, Press’s target is nothing less than the United States national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” which Press dislikes for several reasons, according to this clip from his show:
Press begins with a few semi-reasonable criticisms of the anthem for being musically difficult (or as he puts it, “un-singable”) because it employs a wider range of notes than most people can sing. However, as the transcript provided by the Radio Equalizer shows, he quickly descends from strictly musical complaints into a nasty dig at the lyrical content of the song, and especially its positive attitude towards Americans:
PRESS (11:31:) … But it’s an abomination. First it ranges two octaves most people can only do kind of one octave. I mean when you think about it, it’s bombs bursting in air rocket’s red glare it all kinds of, you know a lot of national anthems are that way, all kinds of military jargon and the land there’s only one phrase ‘the land of the free’ which is kind of nice and ‘the home of the brave?’ I don’t know.
OGBURN: I mean I get that part.
PRESS: Are we [Americans] the only ones who are brave on the planet? I mean all the brave people live here. I mean it’s just stupid I think. I’m embarrassed, I’m embarrassed every time I hear it.

I have no problem singing the song, but I don‘t sing it out loud because I can’t carry a tune.

S. soil, the first time he heard the Star Spangled Banner would sound pretty damned sweet! It would take something like that for him to appreciate it like the majority of us already do. Guess he thought it sounded pretty stupid when Whitney Houston sang it at the Super Bowl, too. But . . . I’m sure Mr. Press would prefer the United States to adopt The Internationale as its anthem but that will never happen.
The unconventional musical structure of our national anthem is one of its greatest attributes. I think it is one of the greatest adaptations of poetry to music ever attained; which gives it a High Art aspect that really ticks off liberals because “jingoism” and “nationalism” are not supposed to be beautiful.
The irony is the National Anthem is neither jingoistic nor nationalistic but the critiques of the National Anthem never fail to mention the word “hate.”
Hate: the core of the liberal heart.

It depicts the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, an attack that would not be remembered were it not for the poem it inspired.
This cuts to the very core of modern-day liberalism where personal stories and personal accounts are at the center of their narrative and the United States must always be portrayed as the aggressor and the oppressor.
They fail to realize that the “bombs bursting in air” were not our own but those of the Royal Navy. The small island fort withstood the bombardment (which was brutal for its time) and so did its flag.
The beauty, imagery and symbolism this evokes stirs my heart deeply.
The welling of hot, proud inspiring tears that form in ones eyes upon hearing this song is a force, in and of itself, to be reckoned with.

They listen to our music all over the world, but our national anthem is sung to a British melody. If we ever were going to consider changing it, my vote would be for Land of a Thousand Dances.

You’re an un-American jack@ss. The above poem was composed for the Anacreontic Society, a typical British gentlemen’s club of the 18th century. Obviously they were inclined to heavy drinking and women, but their binding interest was music. The great composer Haydn was among their notable guests.
John Stafford Smith, who wrote the music for the song, was a renown composer and organist, as well as a consummate musicologist. Smith was also a collector of classical works, including the works of Bach and Obrecht.
It was the tune, not the lyrics, that was hailed for its vocal range and metrical structure, and that was one of the reasons why Francis Scott Key and his brother-in-law chose it. The other reason was that it was a popular tune everyone could sing to, so the patriotic spirit caught fire. Our talented poet gave this extraordinary tune the lyrics that matched its musical richness.
You liberals have little or no respect for our patriotic symbols. I wish to God we could ship all you poorly evolved apes back to England, where you can kiss royal @ss, take to the pubs, get drunk, skkrew whichever side happens to be in front of you, and the next day dutifully blend into the collective workforce of your socialist utopia.
