Libertarian Author: Today‘s Lower Class Is ’More Dishonest,‘ ’Less Religious,’ & ‘Less Responsible’ Than it Was 50 Years Ago

Libertarian Author: Todays Lower Class is More Dishonest, Less Religious, & Less Responsible Than it Was 50 Years AgoNoted libertarian author Charles Murray, famous for controversial works such as “The Bell Curve” and “Losing Ground,” has released his latest book titled “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010.”

In “Coming Apart,” Murray investigates the growing gap between America’s upper and lower classes, with a specific focus on whites (to show that neither race nor “income inequality” have anything to do with his findings), and warns that America is in a very dangerous position.

Murray posits that a conspicuous rift has grown between the “new upper class” and “the new lower class” and that it has gotten to the point where, culturally speaking, the two have nothing in common.

Even more disconcerting, according to Murray, is the fact that this rift has grown during times of economic stagnation as well as economic prosperity.

“It’s not too dramatic to say this,” Charles Murray said during a recent interview with PBS, “we’re losing a lot of what has made America exceptional. And as we have become increasingly a class society in which a big chunk of the people on the bottom no longer behave in the ways that are essential for a self-governing free society.”

According to the libertarian author, the “new lower class” has become less honest, less religious, and less responsible than “white working class people were half a century ago.” Crime is up, marriage is down, rule of law is disregarded, and the number of those not even seeking employment is astounding.

To illustrate this point, Murray compares the affluent, upper-middle-class town of Belmont, MA., with the working-class town of Fishtown, PA.

By the early 2000s, only 48 percent of Fishtown’s working-class were married, down from 84 percent in 1960; children living in households with both biological parents fell from 96 percent to 37 percent; the number of disabled quintupled from 2 percent to 10 percent; arrest rates for violent crime quadrupled from 125 to 592 per 100,000 people; and the percent attending church only once a year nearly doubled from 35 percent to 59 percent, according to the L.A. Times‘ Frederick Lynch.

Moreover, by 2008, almost 12 percent of prime-age males with a high school diploma were “not in the labor force” — quadruple the percentage from the all-time low of 3 percent in 1968, Lynch adds.

Now compare that to Belmont: 83 percent are married; 84 percent of children reside in two-biological-parent homes; less than 1 percent are on disability; and nearly 40 percent attend church only once a year. Furthermore, nearly all adult males are in the workforce. According to Murray, Belmont represents about 20 percent of the total U.S. population, whereas Fishtown represents about 30 percent.

Libertarian Author: Todays Lower Class is More Dishonest, Less Religious, & Less Responsible Than it Was 50 Years Ago“We have a new lower class that’s large and growing that has fallen away from a lot of the basic core behaviors and institutions that made America work,” Murray said.

However, contrary to Murray’s critics (e.g. Salon’s Joan Walsh, The Daily Beast’s David Frum, or AFL-CIO Deputy Chief of Staff Thea Lee), the goal of “Coming Apart” is not simply to condemn the “new lower class.” Instead, it is to demonstrate how the aforementioned cultural divide has been detrimental to both the “new lower class” as well as the “new upper class”: The former has experienced a precipitous decline in family and community life while the latter has insulated itself from the knowledge of these dangerous cultural shifts.

Which is worse: the class that has abandoned certain essential cultural institutions or the class that is unaware of the cultural rot taking place?

What is to be done?

Murray argues that it’s up to the class of people who still recognize and acknowledge the merits of religiosity and community life to encourage the return of those who have fallen away. But the word “encourage” is key: Murray says this should not be done through force of law or government mandates.

“It’s a very well verified social science finding that government programs don’t do a good job of solving the human problems that I’m discussing,” Murray said.

Murray explains that “Coming Apart” is more about cultural shifts and people than it is about mere economic trends and cold numbers; we should focus on real happiness and personal satisfaction as opposed to simply the promise of economic reward.

“The way that social norms become social norms is not through any systematic process. It is through a flowering of an understanding within a culture…I think these are ideas whose time has come,” Murray said during his PBS interview.

    @Joe – Seriously take a statistics course.

This guy is reporting facts and you are angry because you don’t like the truth.

Putting your head in the sand is more a liberal reaction to bad news than a conservative one, but you may be an outlier. Also blaming decades-long trends on a fairly recent recession does not explain away the facts that were here 5 years ago.

And what is this crap about “less fortunate”. I know a lot of people that grew up handicapped or dirt poor that are richer than I am. The poor are those that do not earn enough to take care of themselves and do not save for the future – not victims of some unknown disease.

If we actually told people “you are poor because you are not working and saving”, we would help them a lot more than giving them hand outs and teaching them to live hand to mouth.

The Discrimination Card has been so over-played since then. ( Wish more people had listened to Bill Cosby instead of calling him an Oreo. ) Now the “trouble makers” insist that they have “ rights ” in the classroom so they exercise those “ rights” and , thus , ruin education there. Parents who want their children to get a decent education abandon the public schools and send their kids to charter or private schools. Which is one of the reasons public schools are such a mess – parents who expect more are largely missing. Wish ALL parents would expect their kids to behave and insist that education take place rather than fighting for their kids because they are black or white or yellow or whatever racially ” special .“ This only results in a racially ” special” trouble-maker who will then end up with his rights of “specialness ” preserved but his potential for knowledge and employable non-existent. Until the Discipline Card is returned to public education there will be no improvement in American public education. Our kids today are suffering some of the worst results of slavery because so many people are still trying to ” get revenge / justice” for the sins of the past. But these people are really only revisiting these injustices on their own children – by not expecting them to produce what these children are truly capable of achieving. There have been so many successful inner city schools run by “ tough love ” principals

if they are less fortunate, what does that say about their work? Society as a whole is rotting, its on the news everyday. The majority of the problems exist in the poor of society. It is a statistical fact. He is not bashing the poor, he is pointing out the trend to possibly awaken them before it is too late.

It is not only the lower class that has become more dishonest, less religious ect. all the classes suffer the same disease. No one wants to be the moral person today. Parents do not respect sunday as a day of family and church, instead it is the day of football. Taking care of the old is no longer an honor instead it is avoided by family. This is one thing that Obama said that was the truth America has become lazy.

Too bad sally doesn’t know where the Bible comes from. Constantine, founder of the Byzantine Empire, brought together Hebrew and Christian scholars to assimilate a book based on the dead sea scrolls. HUMANS determined which “books” would be included, and left out the ones (plural) they did not approve of (like the book of Enoch). This was done for SOCIAL STABILITY, and Christians were required to move the sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, the PAGAN sabbath. As anyone can tell, Hebrews did not comply w/ this compromise. At this time, Christians were brainwashed to believe Jews are Gods chosen, and this created PERCEPTION has brought them great wealth (research the talmud, they really HATE Christians).

@MR166 The air frame of a 767 is formed sheet aluminum, the thickest being the skin at 4mm. According to the MYTH, an entire airliner “disappeared” into each tower. The wing tips are quite fragile and have even been know to come off IN FLIGHT. It is NOT POSSIBLE for them to pass through (shear) box columns w/ a wall thickness of 10mm (making a total of 20mm of A36 structural STEEL). This doesn’t even take into account the 4″ thick concrete floors, w/ a depth of over 200′. Just research the 45′ strike of the Empire state building, where the air frame NEVER PENETRATED the exterior wall, falling to the street UNASSISTED. 500 fps is nowhere near the 2-3000 fps bullets travel to shear steel, and lead is 4x alum sg. Most of the “new” lower class we see now were raised with a sense of entitlement, thanks to a welfare system that creates dependence on the government. Many of those who were able to climb out of the lower class come from families who understand the value of education, love for God and family, respect for others, and hard work. These are the lessons I learned early in life. I am now retired and continue to thank God for the life he’s given me.
I continue to pray for others, both rich and the poor, that they may come to know, love, and serve God in this life and in Heaven.

The blue collar working class who associate with many of the non-working class understand and recognize this great cultural divide. However, the middle class and upper class, who insulate themselves with barriers of location etc do not understand. They even may be sympathetic to the non-working class who are more than willing to take everything they are given. In fact, it is quite scarey how oblivious many in the upper and middle class are to the non-working class cultural divide. The upper and middle class still talk as if everything is still rosey and moving along as it should. “The republican party is a prime example. No one in the republican party seems to understand how far out of touch they really are with the non-working class or even the working class for that matter who understand the problem(tea partiers). Therefore, how could they possibly understand how to solve the problem. Listen to the Democrats. They are talking about a completely different country than the republicans and the republicans continue oblivious, looking for compromise where there is none. This lack of commonality is becoming more and more deeply embedded in the rhetoric and the actions. What is also scarey about the republicans and upper and middle class is that they are so oblivious to this cultural divide that they will listen to the propaganda of the Marxists and turn against those working class people who are the only ones who can save them.

I have to respectfully disagree. My wife and I were both born and raised in the lower middle class and many of our friends and family remain there. Through education, military service and hard work, my wife and I are now upper middle class. We are quite aware of the decline in the lower class. We both have too many family members to mention that are persistent alcohol and pill abusers. Few of them go to church. Many have “disabilities” and others live off government assistance. We know what’s going on, we just don’t know what to do about it, other than providing a good example. I don’t think giving them more money is the problem. Education is limited as well…smart and unethical might be worse. It’s seems to us that what we are losing is a system of core values, a good work ethic and a true moral compass. Our religion provides us with that…I think that might help them as well….but try getting a pill addict to church…most of them only care about the next government check and catching a buzz. It’s sad, but I can’t walk them to redemption…that comes from within and from God.

This is similar to what happened to Germany in the 1930′s. I’ve seen a lot of people say that “Hitler fooled the Germans”.

Actually the Germans fooled themselves into a planned society which by definition had to be dictatorial, Hitler merely stepped in at an opportune time and took power for himself, but Germany was already on a path to dictatorship long before he rose to power.

F.A. Hayak spells it out pretty well in the opening 4-5 chapters of “The Road to Serfdom”.

Unfortunately, when you have a lot of people begging to have their lives planned for them, totalitarianism is the only thing that can answer their prayers.

It is not just the upper class that is insulated. The middle class is insulated also. The lower class has become a depend class, not a working class. In Marxist terms the lower class has been replaced in Marxist lexicon from the working class to the non working, government dependent, class. Having so many dependent on government largesse is very dangerous because it makes for a government ruled not by reason and morality but by primal impulses and mobs. No governments in all history have ever ended in anything but tyranny that have allowed the rule of mobs.

Yes, the answer is “out there” but people have always been rebellious to it….don’t want to acknowledge the reasons why we were blessed with our successes, prosperity, freedoms was b/c we had godly Founders and based our foundation on biblical standards and ideas about individualism, etc. Nothing new about humans – they usually go downhill and become rebellious to all that. Liberalism, Progressiveism, Communism, etc. all trying to establish govn’ts w/o God/Bible, which most detest. Never works but they refuse to acknowledge the facts & history. Founders warned we would fail if most of the nation wasn’t “moral” – a healthy Republic can’t continue without it. We got lazy and took things for granted, fell spiritually and so here we are.
However, the good news is I am hearing there IS a revival taking root among the youth as we speak & hopefully will spread — but after God’s judgement of natural disasters, enemies attacking us, economic crash, etc. Always takes disasters to wake people up unfortunately.
