Libertarian Candidate Running for US House Legally Changes His Name to Thomas Jefferson

Odds are you have heard of Thomas Jefferson — American founding father, one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States.
Additionally, there is also good likelihood that you have not heard of Jack Talbert, the Libertarian Party nominee running against Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo in Kansas’ Fourth House District. Well, he’s hoping to change all of that with a drastic change in his identity.
The long-shot candidate has legally changed his name to Thomas Jefferson in a bid to make a lasting impression on voters when they cast their ballots, the Topeka Capital-Journal reports.

“When people see that Thomas Jefferson’s on the ballot, half will think I’m committed to the Libertarian Party, and the other half will probably think I should be committed,” Jefferson told the newspaper. “But whether you think it’s crazy or not, hopefully it gets people thinking about the founding fathers and Thomas Jefferson in particular and whether we have that form of government still.”
Jefferson is particularly concerned with the U.S. government’s sweeping national security measures put in place after the 9/11 attacks that give the president the ability to detain citizens under the National Defense Authorization Act.
Jefferson’s wife, Santana Marie Talbert, is the Libertarian Party‘s candidate for the House in Kansas’ 87th District seat in Wichita. He said his wife was overall supportive of the name-change.
“She said ‘Whenever I want to rebuke you, I will call you Thomas,’” said Jefferson. “It’s like she uses it if I do something stupid, like, ‘C’mon, Thomas, use your brain.’ Around the house, though, she usually still calls me things you can’t print in the newspaper and Jack.”
Still, even with the publicity stunt Jefferson does not think he nor his other opponents have a great chance of unseating Pompeo.
“Essentially, when you’re running against Mike Pompeo, you‘re drawing straws to see who’s going to lose to him,” he said.
Jefferson added he is content with Pompeo‘s opposition to President Obama’s health care overhaul but argues he has not balanced the budget or taken steps to address the domestic security crackdown that has infringed on the civil liberties of citizens.
“He’s doing the job of a congressman,” Jefferson said. “But unfortunately the job of a congressman anymore is ‘campaign, rinse, repeat.’”
Jefferson understands the stature of the name that he has now adopted. But he says he isn’t trying to live up to the name as much as he is trying to pay tribute to it and remind Americans where we as a country came from.
“It’s indicative to the party,” Jefferson said. “It‘s a name that’s recognizable, and it’s a philosophy I think we need to re-adopt.”

I hadn‘t researched the article and my memories of Reagan were that he was president when I was trying to get into my girlfriend’s stirrup pants at a Molly Ringwald flick. Looking back he was a social progressive, but every human makes mistakes. In his case it costs us trillions, and acomplished nothing, but… Jefferson had no Constitutional Authority to make the LA Purchase, and was mildly corrupted in his later years yet I’m still a huge fan. I don’t worship Reagan like so many folks here do. You know the types, they say we worship RP. LOL and if he were that great explain the mullet! But seriously that article would take a long time to verify. If Rothbard is correct, I‘d say Reagan wasn’t the guy everyone makes him out to be. If he’s wrong, I’d say the opposite. Other folks I think highly of, such as Tom Woods believe Rothbard was a brilliant economist. (and Woods schooled Levin on the subject) I’m a newbie trying to learn this economic stuff. I probably wouldn‘t even know who Rothbard was if I didn’t see your posts.

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 10:49pmJUST. Whether you agree with me or not on anything, you can say I at least I introduced you to Ron Paul’s mentor Murray Rothbard to some degree. If you want to know the history of Paul, you must know Mises, Rothbard and even Lew Rockwell and you have to be very objective in your research (which I know you are but only if you think it’s worth your time to do so).
You have to go way back and look beyond the nice buzzwords you hear these days, the great sounding (but unproven) theories proposed and get into their history, heads and character… that’s all I can tell you. It ain’t all about the Constitution IMO with any of these guys. It’s just a vehicle, albeit, a sweet vehicle that Constitution… but a vehicle for the pimping of a dangerous ideology which could harm our country more than Obama or Liberalism/Progressivism.
Way, way more dangerous than Romney my friend… but that’s just my opinion (and the opinion of millions upon millions of others).

I keep hearing Paulbots talk about a convention battle, great, hopefully they will vote for neither Paul or Romney. But this is in contrast to what you guys originally said was your goal: to have the PEOPLE decide whom the (R) candidate would be. Then the unthinkable happened, your guy lost nearly every state but tried to say he won them even though polls showed otherwise. Then, since they PEOPLE were so stupid to not recognize Paul as the second coming of George Washington (who personally lead troops in an armed insurection against American citizen for failure to pay a tax) they tried to go through the conventions to overturn the votes of the population.
….Exactly how is it now that Paulbots are not hypocrits? Political corruption and idiocracy occurs on ALL sides, including the Libertarian/Green Party. If you honestly think Paul is as clean as the driven snow I’ve got some great ocean front property in Oklahoma for you!

Doing anything else will change nothing. That is simply how this system works. I realize that if it were in your power you would assemble all your friends and start a revolution that would eventually install Ron Paul as king. You claim you are for liberty, but only as long as it agrees with YOUR ideals. That is the very thing the founding fathers fought! This is their system, the system spoke and Romney won the primary…by a large margin.
I was not trying to talk down to anyone. I do not know you personally. I would assume you are in your mid twenties to early thirties. I could be wrong. But believe it or not I was that age once too. I had earned my first graduate degree by that time and I felt I knew everything and could see and understand what my elders could not. I was wrong. I am no longer an idealist. I am a realist. Either Obama or Romney will win this election. My vote does indeed go for the lesser of two evils…As it does every time I vote. That is just the way it works. Thank God for it too…

Lincoln was not a founder my friend. Being a Philadelphian I would have expected you to know that the adopting of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution are the events that constitute the founding of the United States of America. The adoption of the Constitution, which is the last of the three events chronologically, was ratified in 1787. Lincoln wasn’t born until 1809.
You should educate yourself and honor your mother. Not take delight in her sadness.
As to their religions you are correct. They were deists. If you’ve read any of their writings, however, you will see that they were spiritual men who both strongly believed in God.
