PayPal Co-Founder and Libertarian Heavyweight Donates $1.7M to Ron Paul PAC

Peter Thiel, business heavyweight, tech giant, PayPal co-founder, hedge fund manager, and avowed libertarian, has donated another $1.7 million to Endorse Liberty, a super PAC supporting Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX).
“Thiel, a billionaire who runs the hedge fund Clarium Capital, has donated a total of $2.6 million…since it was founded on Dec. 20,” Politico’s Robin Bravender writes.
This makes Thiel the single biggest contributor to the super PAC, which, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission, brought in $2.4 million in January and $1 million in late December.
“Other big donors to Endorse Liberty include Stephen Oskoui, founder of Smiley Media and co-founder of the super PAC, and Gunter Marksteiner, owner of a Florida broadcasting group,” Bravender writes. “Oskoui donated $125,000 in late January and provided $296,000 of in-kind media services. Marksteiner cut a check for $2,500 and donated $161,000 in in-kind air time on WHDT, the groups filings show. Luke Nosek, another PayPal co-founder, contributed $10,000.”
However, even with these generous and oftentimes impressive donations, Endorse Liberty still managed to spend more than it raised in January. A total of $2.9 million was spent by the PAC, most of it going towards advertisements: $2.5 million went towards online advertisements on Facebook, Google and other web sites and another $165,000 was spent on television commercials.
But considering the dedication and the seemingly endless financial resources of the PAC’s biggest contributor, overspending on necessities such as internet advertisements and TV spots seems like a negligible offense.
Consider the following: Thiel’s $2.6 million in total donations account for 76 percent of the super PAC’s fundraising since it came online late last year, according to CNN Money.
Furthermore, his donations are just a fraction of his net worth. In addition to the libertarian’s enormous success with PayPal, which is now owned by eBay, Thiel has made a few other business investments that have contributed greatly to his personal worth.
“In 2004, the angel investor put up $500,000 for Facebook’s first financing round. At $30 per share, his stake in the social-networking powerhouse is now worth $1.3 billion,” CNN Money reports.
Translation: the $2.6 million Thiel gave to Endorse liberty is only 0.2 percent of his Facebook holdings — and there’s a lot more where that came from.
Therefore, as long as Thiel believes Rep. Paul is the best person to represent libertarianism, the Endorse Liberty PAC can probably take comfort in knowing that even though it overspent in January, it still has a generous billionaire angel investor in its corner.

Ron Paul is crazy for wanting the people to have individual liberty and have the federal government follow Constitutional principles. That is craazzy!
I believe all you Paul haters are selfish people. You are so afraid that your life will be changed from the cushy life you are now enjoying with no regard to anyone else. You are right though. Everyones life will change, and the changes will be difficult at first, but I believe we owe this to our future generations, as it was us that helped to get our country to this point by blindly following the establishments idea of corporatism.
Romney, Santorum and Gingrich have a plan to try and make government better. You cannot make big government better, it is impossible. We need someone right now that is dedicated to shrinking government drastically. If we do not, our way of life will be over and the hard times will be even worse.
I predict the fall of the dollar and every single person in the U.S. will be out of work with no unemployment checks as there will be no U.S. government in place to issue them. http://www.usdebtclock.org/

Posted on February 20, 2012 at 7:29pmForeign Policy;
Somehow the media has brainwashed Americans into believing that invading foreign countries, while disregarding their Constitutions, and rule of law, while killing scores of civilians is a ‘strong foreign policy’. Not to mention spreading our military thin throughout the world and leaving our borders wide open.
I think what we consider a strong foreign policy is a bit skewed. If you think starting unConstitutional wars, and killing MILLIONS of innocent people abroad is a strong foreign policy/defense…well our definition of a strong foreign policy differs.
The terrorist/civilian kill ratio is ~1:10 That is for every ‘terrorist’ killed 10 innocent civilians (children, women, men) die (Brookings Institute, and GTD Global Terrorism Database). This begs the question; How many terrorists have we just created? We could never end this war without genocide.

Maine
All states where Paul was projected to do well, win even, according entrance polls, but somehow he just can’t win. Votes were lost, counting done in secret, tally’s held out of state jurisdiction, entire cities and precintcs disqualified, caucuses canceled for supposed “bad weather”, caucuses moved to new locations without notice, college students wrongly told they are not eligible to vote in caucuses… And we’re supposed to just accept that these are all a coincidence? The Iowa GOP Chairman even said that if Paul won they would “pull the vote”, whatever that means.
When 12 people get up to speak for a candidate at an Iowa caucus site, and Ron Paul gets ZERO votes at that site, there is fraud.
When there are only two caucus votes televised in Las Vegas, Nevada and Ron Paul wins both with 60%, and NONE of the rest of the precincts in Clark Country are even counted, there is fraud.
When the Maine GOP Chairman calls the race with 81% of the vote counted, 125 cities recording zero votes for all candidates, and refuses to count an entire county whose caucus HE canceled, there is fraud.
One instance I could explain away. Two or three, possibly. But every time Ron Paul is on the ballot there are shenanigans. It happens too much to be coincidence.

AND…. “The largest donor to a SuperPAC supporting Ron Paul is Peter Thiel, the sort of ultra-wealthy, super-national figure Paul and his supporters love to hate.
Thiel — who gave $900,000 to the pro-Paul group Endorse Liberty — made his fortune as the co-founder of PayPal; he was also an early investor in Facebook, and is now a major player in the world of high-tech venture capital. He’s also a devoted libertarian and devoted Republican: He hosted a fundraiser for the confrontational gay conservative group GOProud at his grand apartment off Union Square in 2010.
Thiel is also a member of the steering committee of the Bilderberg Group, the elite, invitation-only conference that’s the frequent subject of conspiracy theories.
“They probably get together and talk about how they’re going to control the banking systems of the world and natural resources,” Paul said in 2008.
Thiel shares, though, Paul’s anti-government, and anti-Est@blishment, impulses. He has funded a prize to encourage talented students to drop out of college, and is a major supporter of the cause of “Seasteading,” creating independent, water-borne cities free of national law.”

Your story sounds close to mine even. I can respect Santorum. I can also respect Romney and even Gingrich. None of them come close to my political ideology, but so what? Too much noise, the truth is we cannot know what any of these folks would do once in office…Not even Ron Paul. Get past the mud slinging, he is not an isolationist or a pacifist. He is also ultimately right but the real world just does not play by the rules. If you want to crusade against him then more power to you, it does not threaten me in any way. But you surely understand most people do not take your posts seriously.
In any case, thanks for being authentic with me. And thank you for your service. I was fortunately too young for that war by a few short years, but I know many who went.

Report Post »justangry
Posted on February 20, 2012 at 7:18pmIt is, and it isn’t even really conservative when people want the government to push a social agenda. It’s more inline with the temperance and family values movement at the start of the progressive era.

Posted on February 20, 2012 at 7:06pmi like the libertarian message ……………not sure paul is the best messenger though .
people ( understandably) have a difficult time understanding his perspective on foreign affairs because he is seeing it from a continuous constitutional point of view that would have required us to actually have made our decisions constitutionally since the beginning ………..but since that is not the case, his view seems foreign today, and is actually not feasible in this day and age. first we would have to slowly revert back to constitutionality slowly over time just like a heroin addict cant quit cold turkey . but, if you look at his views and place yourself back in time before the multitude of errors were made he is actually right …………..we shouldnt have involved ourselves in many global situations, and we sure shouldnt be policing the world
his domestic policies are dead on
sadly, too many neo-political actors from both sides of the spectrum fear the loss of governmental power that would be the conclusion of pauls policies and thus the media and pundits misrepresent most of his views
and as most of you regulars here know, im no paulbot but i do take the time to actually investigate the news . he has a big problem with messaging , but then so do most honest people

It is never right to INITIATE force upon anyone who has not damaged anyone elses person or property.
but, i hear what you are saying, but the thing is we CAN quit cold turkey…
to say we can’t is to say that we will NEVER end wars. you have to lay down your arms, and say it’s over, we are done, you are FREE to live your lives. and they will THANK US.

Posted on February 20, 2012 at 10:47pm@Justangry: I think Ron Paul is a great speaker. You can at least discern honesty and integrity from how he speaks. Unlike Obama. Check out reverse speech… it’s not a perfect science, but the concept is that the subconscious express congruency with what is being spoken… it’s very interesting, and all of Ron Paul’s reverse speech clips show 100% congruency, as opposed to Obama’s clips, which are almost 100% incongruent with the message that is being spoken. Check it out!

Report Post »Taldren
Posted on February 20, 2012 at 7:16pm@trolltrainer: No, Romney has barely any delegates. Ron Paul has won nearly all of the delegates from every caucus state. The campaign has been very open and clear about this … it has even been reported on both Reality Check and , of all places , Rachel Maddow. The state “vote” is only a straw poll … the people that actually make the real vote are the delegates and while everyone else’s supporters leave after the strawpoll results, Paul’s supporters stay and get elected as delegates.
Report Post »NoNannyState4me
Posted on February 20, 2012 at 7:29pm@taldren: This is true for all the States that are not “Winner Take All”, such as Florida. None the less, Ron is doing great in the delegate pool.
Report Post »Texas Chris
Posted on February 21, 2012 at 7:01amMy personal delegate counting looks like Romney has about 119 bound delegates, and Paul has about 7 bound and 120 UNbound delegates.
When/if Gingrich and Santorum drop out and release their delegates, Ron Paul will pick them up because his supporters got picked as bound delegates.
In the event of a brokered convention, Ron Paul will win (barring GOP shenanigans at the convention).
