Library of Congress to Get Rare Map of Flat World

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — An Oregon man has given the Library of Congress a rare and unusual gift: a 120-year-old map supporting the theory that the Earth is flat.

Don Homuth, of Salem, Ore., says the map was given to him by his eighth-grade teacher. It was created by Orlando Ferguson of Hot Springs, S.D.

Homuth used to live in Fargo and was a North Dakota state senator.

Library of Congress spokesman Robert Morris told The Forum newspaper that officials checked more than 75 maps before confirming the design was one-of-a-kind.

He says the only other known copy of the map is in the Pioneer Museum in Hot Springs.

    Since I saw this map, I looked up some interesting theories out there. I believe this guy, who charted the map, believed the earth was the center of the universe. It is considered a creationist theory. I still haven’t pieced it all together, but it should make for a good read- and something that was never represented in my schooling, funny huh?

      They thought the earth was the center of the universe and the Sun, Moon,and Planets (planet means wanderer in Greek as they looked like stars ,but they moved) revolved around the earth.The RCC would persecute you if you thought otherwise.Look what happened to Galileo.

      Galileo was close friends with Pope Urban II in his early years he considered being a priest. He was censured by the church not because of his theory, but because he wrote a book about his theories, failed to put forth the creationism argument too, and made fun of the pope in it. Not because the church hates science.

    This is important history. I think things like this really help use understand how people livng back then thought and helps us better understand them. It also teaches us a lot about science: at one point, the earth was flat, Pluto was a planet, and even the Big Bang Theory used to be mocked and ridiculed. But eventually all that became, no longer science, but history.

      Even though we have better tools and toys and see much more than ever before I really think there is one thing that we have failed to learn from the science of the past. That is the fact that at any given time what we think we know isn’t always so. Evolution and the big bang theory are two cases in point. You see those that don’t believe in a big bang as flat earthers. Oddly enough I think the same of those that do believe in a big bang.

      To believe in a big bang you have to believe that matter is limited. No scientist that I know of will argue that space is limited. How ridiculous it is to believe in unlimited space and assume limited matter. Since you believe in the big bang explain to me which is correct and why. I don’t think you can explain either.

      1) In limitless space matter is limited.
      2) In limitless space matter is unlimited but somehow limitless matter was compressed in limited space.

    Orlando Ferguson of Hot Springs, S.D. must have been some kind of progressive liberal to come up with a scheme like this. This map fails to take into account Antarctica, unless you count that ring of land around the map, which is completely out the window. Are we to suppose there is a flat block just drifing in space, or an infinite flat no-mans land beyond the Antarctic “ring?”

    Its interesting the map making has in it saying that according to the bible the world is flat, this is in fact one of the most heinous lies perpetrated throughout history by those who hated the church, especially the Catholic church, who is fact in 1491 has a conference whereby Christopher Columbus was in attendance before his trip to “around” the world to get to India…

    Even in recent history, Washington Irving (1783-1859) wrote novels of historical fiction but claimed they were real history. In 1828, Irving wronte a “history was of Christopher Columbus who as a ”simple mariner” appeared before a group of Catholic inquisitors and theologians, all of whom believed, according to Irving, that the earth was flat “like a plate.” It is true that there was a meeting at Salamanca in 1491, but Irving’s version of it was completely fictional and is in fact an outright lie. There are actually references in the early pslams of the bible and in the library of the Vatican, all showing that the Catholic Church was never an impedement to Science and in fact knew all along the Earth was round.

      So how to this brilliant “flatters” explain the live shots from all of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Shuttle and Nasa Space Station video and photo’s of the earth?

      Or the most famous Apollo 8 “Earth Rise” showing the earth rising above the moon as they came around the far side of the moon and saw the earth as man first oribited the moon in 1968? That’s gonna be a tough one to explain…

      Quite frankly, anyone believing the earth was flat had to have been out of their mind given the fact that right above the earth floating in the heavens was proof that planets were round… the moon and the Sun, why would they be round and the earth flat? When the first astronomers saw Venus and Mars, they could see round planets, again… why would the earth be flat? Even earth mariners just be looking out at the ocean can easily see the horizon having a round curvature to it, its right there in plan sight… the whole “flat” thing is just ridiculous.

      If the earth was flat, GPS would not work.You could not orbit a non-round planet.In aircraft such as the SR-71, and the Mig-25, they fly at such altitudes you can see the curvature of the earth and the sky turns dark.

      This is a good piece of history, and should not be forgotten just because it is not right. It reminds us that man does make mistakes, and big ones at that…..I am sure a good portion of science being put put now, that we bow down to, and use to mold society will be proven wrong, or only partially true in the future as we learn more an more…….

      First of all the Earth is flat as far as any individual, standing in one place can discern. You can only get a broader view from education, something much maligned here.

      And the Earth isn’t really “round.“ A flat Earth can be ”round,” a term which is a two dimensional concept. The Earth is spheroidal. Actually that’s not quite right either; the Earth is an oblate spheroid, slightly flattened at the poles.
