French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe proposed a political steering committee among countries involved in the military operations in Libya.
“I’ve proposed to our British colleagues, who are in agreement, to create a political-steering operation that would unite the foreign ministers of the states involved as well as the Arab League,” Juppe told lawmakers today in Paris, according to Agence France Presse.
Discussions about such a panel are ongoing and details will not be made public until agreement has been reached, a spokeswoman for the U.K.’s Foreign Office said in a telephone interview.

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 3:18pmSadly looking to the Republicans offers no solution. C. Rove and many others support this no-fly-zone involvement in Libya, they only want to pick at BO over timing, tone, leadership etc. The key issue is we have no strategic interest in Libya. The issue of concern is that we are putting US blood and treasure on the line to ‘protect’ the Libyan people from their govt. Americans, if you believe the polls sited on TV, (which I do not) have incedibly been sold another war. If true the capacity of the American people to be thoughtless is amazing.

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 3:16pmGet out now! We can never hand out troops ove to another controlling power, it will only lead to problems. Watch what happens: we’re in this only for a minor role in support of the rebels. Then someone else comes along takes over our forces, tells us what to do and we do it. Only to find out the mission handed us was a set up to turn the middles east against us. i.e. civilians get killed. Everyone points fingers at each other until it’s determined by the U.N. that everything was our fault. This can’t go well.

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 2:37pmEach minute that goes by this whole situation goes from just ridiculous to adsolutely absurd! Perhaps I am not seeing the entire situation with objective eyes, but I do not see anywhere in the Constitution that allows the President to put our American citizen soldiers under the control and command of another country. Has he or anyone else in his government not seen how long it takes the UN or Arab League to reach a consensus or decision? Has he not considered that this committee might decide to put American citizens in the most perilous situations? Has he thought that since this is UN sanctioned and Arab League approved, if any action by our troops is deemed inappropriate, they would demand that the soldier be tried at the World Court or be subject to international law? Could we possibly see multiple cases like the CIA contractor in Pakistan with diplomatic immunity according to the State Department, but not according to Pakistan?

I can’t believe that there is not ONE member of Congress, especially the new 60 member freshmen, that isn’t barking to all that will listen, how it is unconstitutional to committee US troops to a UN action without the consent of Congress. This is not a matter of emminent threat to the US so the President DOES NOT have authority to act without Congress.
Or how about ONE…just ONE member of Congress mentioning that turning over control of our Navy to a Political Committee that doesn’t even include the United States is SEVERELY unconstitutional.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Think about it — there is no “degree” of unconstitutionality. It is either constitutional or it isn’t.
Congressional members ARE putting their heads together, and something good will come of this. The best thing would be to create some legislation that would tie Obama’s hands…like articles of impeachment. I hear that’s being discussed by Democrats in the Senate. Now wouldn’t that be peachy? The House impeaches and the Senate CONVICTS?!
Now is the time to get on the phone with your congressmen in both houses and DEMAND that something be done! Ask them what they need for US to do!! If they don’t hear from us, they won‘t know that we’re out here screaming at EACH OTHER!
And, VRW, they are buzzing like hornets in D.C. They WILL act! They know that We The People understand what’s going on, that we keep up with them, and that we expect them to correct the situation.
Posted on March 22, 2011 at 2:54pmThe time has come for our Generals to stand up to the CINC and explain to him how it works. The Military takes an oath to 1) Protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies Foreign AND DOMESTIC and 2) To obey the LAWFUL orders of their superiors. A US President that places the Armed Forces of the United States under the command of a POLITICAL STEERING COMMITEE is not giving a LAWFUL order. This time the President has gone too far and the leaders of our military must take a stand.
Posted on March 22, 2011 at 2:58pmBolton is a brilliant man, and hopefully our next Secretary of State. He nailed it perfectly – this is Obama’s vision of “humanitarian” military intervention. Even liberal bloggers, like those at Huff N’ Puff are calling these “Humanitarian airstrikes”. Yet no one there will ask, how many lives need to be lost before we protect the people of Yemen? Bahrain? Syria?
This goes to show you how much the world relies on American leadership, and what a complete vacuum of common sense is left when America has no leadership to offer.
Posted on March 22, 2011 at 3:17pmNot completely on topic ……but the FRENCH are involved….
A long time ago, Britain and France were at war. During one battle, the French captured an English Major. Taking the Major to their headquarters, the French General began to question him.
The French General asked, “Why do you English Officers all wear red coats?
Don’t you know the red material makes you easier targets for us to shoot at?”
In his bland English way, the Major informed the General that the reason English Officers wear red coats is so that if they are shot, the bloodwon‘t show and the men they are leading won’t panic.
And that is why from that day until now all French Army Officers wear brown pants.
Posted on March 22, 2011 at 3:35pmOur military forces have always been under civilian command. It needs to be that way – Under U.S. civilian control. N.A.T.O. can be a real pain, the U.N. is worthless militarily, but this, this “steering committee” is downright dangerous. Military decisions and direction cannot wait for a consensus opinion from a multinational group of politicians. Our two party system can slow things down to a dangerous crawl. I can’t imagine what this would mean to our warriors and their military commanders.
Throughout our country’s history an important military attribute has been the amount of responsibility given to each member in the chain of command. If our company commander, say a Captain, was killed or badly wounded a Lieutenant would IMMEADITLY step in to take command. If he bought it the next ranking member and so on right down to the PFC’s & PVT’s. You don’t have to wait for a replacement or a decision from some distant headquarters. (I.e. in the old Soviet Army if you killed a commander the unit was effectively out of the battle because they had no mechanism for a battlefield promotion or temporary command structure.)
This kind of top heavy command can be disastrous to those poor souls actually doing the fighting!
