Libyan Transitional Leader: Shariah Will be Basic Source of all Law

Libyan transitional leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil said Sunday that Islamic Shariah law would serve as the basis for all legislation. (AP)

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — Libya‘s transitional leader declared his country’s liberation on Sunday, three days after the hated dictator Moammar Gadhafi was captured and killed.

He called on Libyans to show “patience, honesty and tolerance” and eschew hatred as they embark on rebuilding the country at the end of an 8-month civil war.

The transitional government leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil set out a vision for the post-Gadhafi future with an Islamist tint, saying that Islamic Sharia law would be the “basic source” of legislation in the country and that existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified.

In a gesture that showed his own piety, he urged Libyans not to express their joy by firing in the air, but rather to chant “Allahu Akbar,“ or ”God is Great.” He then stepped aside and knelt to offer a brief prayer of thanks.

“This revolution was looked after by God to achieve victory,” he told the crowd at the declaration ceremony in the eastern city of Benghazi, the birthplace of the uprising against Gadhafi began. He thanked those who fell in the fight against Gadhafi’s forces. “This revolution began peacefully to demand the minimum of legitimate rights, but it was met by excessive violence.”

Abdul-Jalil said new banks would be set up to follow the Islamic banking system, which bans charging interest. For the time being, he said interest would be canceled from any personal loans already taken out less than 10,000 Libyan dinars (about $7,500).

He also announced that all military personnel and civilians who have taken part in the fight against Gadhafi would be promoted to the rank above their existing one. He said a package of perks would later be announced for all fighters.

“Thank you, thank you to the fighters who achieved victory, both civilians and military,” he said. He also paid tribute to the Gulf Cooperation Council, a six-nation alliance led by Saudi Arabia, The Arab League and the European Union. NATO, which aided the anti-Gadhafi fighters with airstrikes, performed its task with “efficiency and professionalism.”

      What is a demonstration of the absurdity of the entire thing is the “bounce” that idiot in the WH has supposedly has gotten due to the murder of a head of state – Qaddafi.     Well, looks like Obama’s foreign policy has accomplished destabilization in the Middle East – and won’t we be thrilled when the calipha is established? NOT! The people in the Middle East deserve better than the dictators they had but it‘s about to go from bad to worse as Obama’s good buddies, the Muslim Brotherhood, takes charge. The only fight worth having in the Middle East was the one to stabilize a SECULAR Iraq and now we’re abandoning that fight. Boggles the mind. Obama is at least as bad at foreign policy as he is when it comes to the economy.

      Americans need to be made aware of what Sharia is….a big prime time show on Sharia and haw it has effected the people that live under it. BUT IT WILL NOT HAPPEN BECAUSE OUR “POWERS THAT BE” WILL NOT ALLOW IT…and no one will buck the system.

      Syria is secular,so is libya[gadaffi banned the harsh penal codes of the fundamentalists like stoning and chopping off hands] and wanted women to be educated and enter the professions.Egypt is mixed . But sharia can be interpreted according to how one interprets the koran-.There are liberal and fundamentalist versions of islam.And Allah is the arabic word for God.Christian and jewish arabs use that word Allah too when saying God.Good we’re getting out or iraq and that they did not give in to our unjust tyranical demand that our troops can murder with iimpunitty .That was pushing too far and the iraqi government stood by the people and refused such a blatantly colonial condition.Hope they demolish that 50million dollar vatican city size embassy Bush wanted as a “triumphalist mosque” type thing to assert that we’re here and gonna stay for l long time [with bases to control the whole mid east from -now that we removed our base in arabia after osama attacked us].The iraqi people wanted us gone from the start and even more when they saw that huge embassy in their midst. That the iraqis didn’t not cave and we got booted out means they won ,we lost. Sure you toppled saddam-but the people could have and would have done it themselves[like egypt, libya etc]. Allah is not my God. Another difference is their 12th Imam (who they are awaiting the arrival of in order to create a muslim caliphate) lines up with the Anti-Christ of the Bible. So the religions differ greatly. To respond to your friend’s comment: America WAS built on Christian principles, unfortuantely we have fallen away from those principles in the recent past.       I believe our elected officials are adding fuel to a fire called a Caliphate, by helping citizens of foreign nations that have shown hostility over many years towards the United States and any country that does not uphold the teachings of Sharia law. Those that blame the United States for the troubles around the world, need to go back and study some history of foreign nations and discover why these foreign nations that are in turmoil ended up with the likes of their overthrown leaders in the first place. This is a dangerous game our leaders are playing, we have no business being involved. I also believe that the Supreme Leaders of Iran have more to do with the situations abroad than most give them credit for and that persecution of Jews and Christians will continue to rise in foreign nations.

But it’s not difficult to connect the dots. The language is pretty clear. (which by the last count has conducted almost 18,000 deadly terror attacks since 9/11)

      ….Along with that comes oppression of women, Christians, Jews, and others who violate the tenets of Sharia. You’re presenting a false choice. Libyans can still be predominantly Islamic without establishing a theocracy. It’s amazing how Progressive criticize Evangelicals for wanting to “legislate morality” and yet it’s ok if countries like Libya want to do the same. I guess the argument is that it‘s more tolerable if it’s not Christianity.
