Libyan Woman’s Shock Rape Account to Reporters Cut Short in Melee

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP/THE BLAZE) — A distraught Libyan woman stormed into a Tripoli hotel Saturday to tell foreign reporters that government troops raped her, setting off a brawl when hotel staff and government minders tried to detained her.
Iman al-Obeidi was tackled by waitresses and government minders as she sat telling her story to journalists after she rushed into the restaurant at the Rixos hotel where a number of foreign journalists were eating breakfast.
According to Sky News:
As journalists tried to speak to her, things got out of control and the police minders waded in, trying to physically shut her up and stop her talking.
Hers is not the voice they want heard in this country. In the commotion a gun was pointed towards the Sky News team in an attempt to stop them filming.
A team from another news organisation had their camera smashed in front of them.
After about 15 minutes the woman was dragged outside the hotel and put into a waiting car.
A bag was put over her head and she was driven away. The government minders said she was being taken to a hospital, but according to CNN, “she insisted she was being carted off to prison.”
She claimed loudly that troops had detained her a checkpoint, tied her up, abused her, then led her away to be gang raped.
Her story could not be independently verified, but the dramatic scene provided a rare firsthand glimpse of the brutal crackdown on public dissent by Moammar Gadhafi’s regime as the Libyan leader fights a rebellion against his rule that began last month.
The regime has been keeping up a drumbeat of propaganda in the Tripoli-centered west of the country under its control even as it faces a weeklong international air campaign against the Libyan military.
At a hastily arranged press conference after the incident, government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said investigators had told him the woman was drunk and possibly mentally challenged.
Before she was dragged out of the hotel, al-Obeidi managed to tell journalists that she was detained by a number of troops at a Tripoli checkpoint on Wednesday. She said they were drinking whiskey and handcuffed her. She said 15 men later raped her.
“They tied me up … they even defecated and urinated on me,” she said, her face streaming with tears. “The Gadhafi militiamen violated my honor.”
The woman, who appeared in her 30′s, wore a black robe and a floral scarf around her neck and identified herself. She had scratches on her face and she pulled up her black robe to reveal a bloodied thigh. She said neighbors in the area where she was detained helped her escape.
The Associated Press only identifies rape victims who volunteer their names.
As al-Obeidi spoke, a hotel waitress brandished a butter knife, a government minder reached for his handgun and another waitress pulled a jacket tightly over her head.
Al-Obeidi said she was targeted by the troops because she’s from the eastern city of Benghazi, a rebel stronghold.
The waiters called her a traitor and told her to shut up. She retorted: “Easterners – we’re all Libyan brothers, we are supposed to be treated the same, but this is what the Gadhafi militiamen did to me, they violated my honor.”
It soon turned into a scene of chaos with journalists attempting to protect the woman from government minders who physically attacked and intimidated her.
Journalists who tried to intervene were pushed out of the way by the minders. A British television reporter was punched, and CNN’s camera was smashed on the ground and ripped to pieces by the government minders.
Eventually the minders overpowered the woman and led her outside, shoving her into a car that sped away. Al-Obeidi kept crying that she was certain she would be thrown in jail. She begged photographers to take her picture, raising her robe to show them her bruised body. A minder tried to cover her mouth with his hand to keep her from talking.
“Look at what happens – Gadhafi’s militiamen kidnap women at gunpoint, and rape them … they rape them,” al-Obeidi screamed.
She said she wanted to be taken to see the leader himself.
“I want to see Moammar Gadhafi. Didn’t he say that every victim will have justice? I want my rights,” she said.
The government spokesman said the woman was under investigation.
“The investigators did phone me and told me the lady is drunk and that she seems to be suffering mentally,” Ibrahim said. “They are checking on her health condition, her mental condition, whether she was really abused or if these were fantasies.”
Gadhafi‘s crackdown has been the region’s most violent against the wave of anti-government protests sweeping the Middle East. Tensions have been rising between foreign reporters in the Libyan capital and the government minders who have sought to tightly control what they see and whom they talk to. Most of the international press corps is being housed at the Rixos hotel.

I don’t think that any amount US intervention will help these creeps. Does anyone know what the people of Tripoli used to do to Italians in WWII? Well, I have family who survived it and they used to kill the Italians then eat them.

Under Shriah Law, this poor woman will more than likely be stoned to death but not after she will be subjected to more rapes than can be imagined. Obama’s Moslem sympathies will prevent him from doing anything to protect her. You can bet he won’t utter a word.

And Obama wants to arm them.
An article a few days ago from the LA Times said that young gangs of rebels were dragging black Afican immigrants from their homes beating them, intimidating them, throwing the males in horrid jail cells, accusing them of being merceneries for Gaddafi.
The rebels paraded the prisoners/ immigrants in front of cameras. One broke away to plead with the journalist to help him, saying he was just a construction worker and that rebels had raped his wife.
I wonder what Barry will do when the rebels start slaughtering the men, women, and children who support Gaddafi.
I think we’ll find Obama curled up in a fetal position sucking his thumb if Gaddafi gets dragged into the street and gets mutilated in front of the cameras. Gaddafi‘s blood will be on Obama’s hands.

Posted on March 26, 2011 at 2:01pmThis article misses a mark, while remaining somewhat true. Sure, it is a demonstration of Gadaffi’s brutality. That much is true. However, what goes unsaid is where this brutality, against women in general, by him and his henchmen comes from.
It comes right our of the Koran itself and bolstered by the Hadiths.
Things are not going to improve if we are unwilling to speak bluntly about the truth as it is, no matter how uncomfortable or ugly it may be.
Rape in our society here is a crime. In hardline Islamic culture is a punishment.
This woman will die a horrible and brutal death, if that has not already taken place. She will never be heard from again, and there is no doubt about that.
Missing persons are touted by cable news here all the time. Big Media should now make this woman the face of all the women oppressed unwillingly under Islam. All the women seeking their own self determination should stand up now. All the talk about shahid and martyr, well there she is right there. She knew what doing what she did would cost her, an she did it anyway. It should not be dismissed as if she didn’t make that sacrifice for all the women who live as modern day slaves.

I wouldn’t go for a forced conversion to Christianity any more than I do about forced compliance to Islam.
It is pretty tough for anyone to even try to defend the Aisha example, she was only 9. – or so the story goes.
I know this much, slavery is slavery and it is unjust no matter what, or who, tries to justify it. It is not “cultural” to enslave human beings, it is pure Evil to do so, and the fact of the matter is that Islam does exactly that.
America faced that demon and so too must the Ummah.

It is the ending where she is almost walking out to the car like she was going to meet her husband or a family friend in the parking lot. If she had been violently raped she would put up more of a struggle possibly even to being injured before she would allow herself to be detained again. Even some of her actions in the video are to easy going knowing that Gov’t minders follow journalists, sitting there calmly and talking and looking comfortable until a male comes into the picture.

They may not go out alone or travel without their husband or a close relative (male) that is unmarriageable. They can be divorced by simply the husband saying I want a divorce. They can be raped with almost impunity. They may even be jailed for fornication at the allegation of rape. They can be used in a marriage called “temporary” wives, or mut’a, that allows a man to marry her for a time limit of usually 3 days sleep with her and then move on. Basically a form of religiously allowed prostitution. Although the man usually doesn’t pay the woman.

For that matter, do we really know anything about these “rebels” that we seem to be helping. Maybe what we are helping is a takeover by the Muslim brotherhood. Maybe the woman herself is a tool of that brotherhood used to gain sympathy for the “rebel” cause. I would be very skeptical of any group that Obama supports or aids.

Isn’t the larger question as to why the liberal press never seems to report these types of incidents with the same fervor they do on a random act in America or point out the obvious fact that Radical Islam seems to be winning with the help either by ineptness or covert cooperation of the POTUS? Someone mentioned “Why did the reporters not step in and defend this woman”. Ever heard you are going to have to know what you believe in and ‘take a side’? Most of the journalists abroad would not trade their life for another. They are not the brave servicemen and women that are enlisted in our military or a few other western civilizations. How many people will stand to the death to protect another that they do not even know? Secondly, if they did, what would this woman claim is her “faith” or political affiliation once they did and she has healed up? Likely Islam? While it is tragic that it happened to this woman, many of those women are the same ones strapping devices on their kids to end westerners. I defy anyone to identify the enemy in some of these countries that are 80-90% Islamic? How can you tell “Radical Islam” from that ‘religion of peace Islam’ that supposedly exists when MOST hate Western civilization and its customs? That is not to say that there are not descent Muslims or other religions that have evil people in it. However, this world is rapidly shaping up to be in a war of good against evil, Freedom against oppression, or civil order against tyranny, choose how you would like to characterize it. Meanwhile, we have a multitude of enemies flooding our borders and getting set up behind their enemy’s lines, i.e. here, again while politicians keep everyone distracted and bankrupt our country quicker so it will be virtually impossible to even defend ourselves if or when the time arrives! While that sounds conspiratorial, you have to wonder if the events taking place are ALL accidental. Probably are, we should just get back to that Netflix movie or shopping for shoes.
