Lieberman Wants Google to Flag Terrorist Activity on Its Blog Site

Just as you can flag inappropriate material on YouTube and content that could be related to terrorism is banned, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has asked Google for the same policy on its blogging platform Blogger.

Talking Points Memo obtained Lieberman’s letter to Google that expresses his “disappointment” that Blogger doesn’t “expressly ban terrorist material” or provide a “flag feature.” The drive for making this request seems to be the recent arrest of Jose Pimentel, who built a pipe bomb to be used against military members and posted bomb making instructions and extremist positions on his blogsite hosted by Google. Here’s some content from his site that Lieberman called out in his letter:

“People have to understand that America and its allies are legitimate targets in warfare. This includes facilities such as army bases, police stations, political facilities, embassies, FBI and CIA buildings, private and public airports, all kinds of buildings where money is being made to help fund the war.”

Lieberman makes his case to Google that many blog sites are hosting material of “homegrown terrorists.”

As of Tuesday this week, Talking Points Memo notes that Pimentel’s site (www.trueislam1.com) was still active, although as of today, Friday, it has been taken down. But The Verge reports that as of Thursday, Google had not responded to Lieberman’s overall request for the “Blogger kill switch.”

CNET reports that in 2008, Lieberman was responsible for calling to Google‘s attention that its YouTube platform wasn’t doing enough to prevent violent or terrorist-related information on its site. This resulted in a change to YouTube’s Community Standards to include a ban on terrorist content. But TG Daily considers enabling flagging on the blog sites as censorship and recalls the time when Lieberman was advocating for what many dubbed “an Internet kill switch”:

It sounds like Lieberman supports outright limitations on free speech. Of course, this isn’t the first time the senator has made a case for government approved filtering of the Internet. In 2010, he argued that an Internet “Kill Switch” in the US is no big deal because China already has one.

CNET posted this video to give readers a sense of the type of content that is blocked on YouTube, alluding to how a change in policy could effect Blogger should Google decide to allow flagging:

 As the video states, YouTube staff reviews flagged videos 24/7 and many are often acted upon within an hour.

    If Sen.Lieberman isn’t careful, opening the door will allow government tyranny to stick it’s foot inside our privacy. We the people are the eyes and ears to help combat terrorism foreign and domestic. There are those who will wish they didn’t play on our playground.

    Best for him to stop charading as a moderate Liberal…they don’t exist!
    Anytime a vote really counted, he was against We The People.

    He needs to GO HOME and BE REPLACED with a true Conservative,
    someone who supports Israel AND America,
    supports 2nd Amendment,
    supports !st Amendment,
    and demands the repeal of ObamaCare.

    I don’t agree with Sen. Lieberman. If you don’t want to read a blog or watch a video, then don’t. Besides, there is a divid even among congress members as to what exactly ‘terrorism’ is so making policies based on the word right now could get complicated.

    For those of you that are critical of this crooked, corrupt and evil government you will be watched, spied on then possibly arrested for terroristic threats.       Whats really scary is thar people will allow it to happen because it makes them feel secure. Look at what TSA is doing, they started with the airports and now they can throw up a roadblock and check you out.
      We are becoming a nation of sheep who accept these invasions of our privacy in the name of security.
      Homeland security is lobbying for warrentless searches, based on questionable intel.

      You are so right..I couldn’t walk in any park smoking a blunt or defecate and in some parks smoke just a cigarette, or drink in public or have sex in public, let alone throw a piece of trash down and not be arrested or called out or on someone’s FB or youtube… They talk about the oppressed and then act like the spoiled brats they are. FRESHMEN, FRESHMEN, FRESHMEN.. I am voting for the candidate that listens and spends the least amount of money from having big expensive dinners..Do you know Herman Cain came to our NWArkansas Republican dinner and didn’t charge us a dime not even travel expenses?

    With whats available on the Internet,its surprising that wacko ‘domestic’ terrorists aren’t wreaking havoc everywhere.But its just not happening.I‘d like to know where Lieberman gets off wanting government to get involved when most major blog sites have ’flag buttons’ or similar,where-as responsible everyday people alert the webmaster to violations.

      Didn’t you get the memo? They are protecting us from all these wacko “terrorists” daily. Sure in almost all cases our own government inserts an “informant” who stirs up things with some random mentally unstable person(or persons), guides them, provides monetary or other material support, provides the targets, provides the time of attack, fake bombs, etc. Then arrests them, shuffle them through the legal process, covers up and flaws or illegal activity on their own side with their trump card of “national security”, convicts them with the during and afterwards of how hard they are working to “protect” us. It is one big, sick joke. To add insult to injury, they will at the same time either ask us for more government money to continue or simply have it handed to them, no questions asked.

      If we have a need to be protected from terrorism, it is that we need protected from our own governmental terrorist acts.

      This is another scare tactic by the socialists to seize more liberties under the guise of public Safety.
      The only monitoring we need stepped up, is the watchful eye of the people on the “politicians”.
      If we don’t demand 100% transparency, we are finished.
      I want to know where the government got the authority to pledge AMERICANS, America‘s land and it’s government to the Federal Reserve ( a PRIVATE BANK ).
      We are owned by the IMF, an arm of the UN and Global Elite, for the Bankruptcy of 1933.
      We must quit the UN and repeal the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.
      Although they are criminals, we will pledge to pay our old debts, previous to the repeal of the Banckruptcy act of 1933, under the condition that they relinquish their deeds and titles that hold America, It’s Government, and people as collateral under a UCC lien at the Depository Trust Corporation.
      This is why Birth certificates became law in all states in 1933, and Social Security in 1936.
      We must print OUR OWN AMERICAN money AGAIN, based on a gold, silver or another natural limited resource found in the United States only, and become independent for a decade or two.
      We can get back to helping the world, once we can take care of our own Country and it’s people,
      and I DON’T mean spreading democracy around the world using Military means.
      They have slowly transformed, what used to be a Sovereign Nation full of Free Americans,
      into a Corporation of slave-like employees.

      Ever dime you pay in taxes does NOT go to roads, military, etc.
      It goes to pay on debts to the IMF that are decades old.
      It is funneled to the Global Banks through the IRS, IMF, UN
      this 400 billion dollar “jobs bill” is just another loan to keep the Corporation of the United States solvent and operating.
      One thing that the Corporation prides itself on, is the Military / Industrial Complex, just one of the pernicious tentacles of the global elite.
