‘Lightning Rod for Controversy’: Another American Flag With Obama’s Face Shows Up In South Jersey

The mid-Atlantic might widely be seen as a pro-Obama region of the United States, but apparently there’s such a thing as going too far even there – and a sleepy neighborhood full of senior citizens has just drawn the line. After an Obama supporter brought home three flags which replaced the stars on the American flag with a giant picture of President Obama’s face, many in the community – whose residents include some military veterans – expressed anger. CBS Philadelphia has a video report on the subject:
“I fought for that flag, I just don’t want a face,” said one veteran.
“I don’t want to be called a racist because I object to the flag, the American flag, where the stars are removed to put a face. I don‘t care if it’s a can of peas. It don’t belong on my American flag,” said another resident.
Ironically enough, the man who hung the flag is himself a veteran.

The STATES used to be the foundation of our country and were represented on the flag by the 50 stars. However, the power of government has been taken away from the states and concentrated in the federal government. Even worse, the power of the federal government has been concentrated in the executive branch.

That is a crime. Are you not a conservative that believes in individual LIBERTY and private property rights? This is a classic case of PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS.
I find it hilarious that you consider me a Communist even though I advocate for STRICT adherence to the Constitution. I may not agree with other people’s point of view, but I believe the Constitution afford EVERYONE equal rights. Freedom isn’t just for people that vote Conservative or Republican. Freedom isn’t just for people who hate Obama. Freedom isn’t just for people that are Christian. Freedom is for EVERYONE, regardless if they believe the complete opposite of me.

Because that is exactly where every here is. They accuse Obama of wiping his butt on the Constitution but don’t realize they are wiping their own butts with it as well, just on different sides of different issues.
They are allowing their emotions get the best of them. What most can’t understand is when you get the government to side with your particular belief system, what’s to guarantee that next election cycle, next year… hell, next month the tides don’t change and now you gave the other wide the ammunition to flip the policy in their favor. That’s why it needs to stay neutral for everyone. Equal opportunity.
But that’s a different topic altogether but overall, they need to understand freedom is universal. Freedom is for everyone, not just for people that agree with you.

Hell NO. But they have every right to not only own it but display it on their private property. Since when do YOU get to dictate what someone else displays on their property?
Then you go as far as making the threat to STEAL their property. In that moment, you are a thief and have broken someone else’s right to property. And you still call yourself for freedom and liberty?

My local pub, that I am a member of the pool league, had a lady from the Dept. of Human Services come into the establishment, she took a picture of a patrons pack of cigarettes laying on the bar, wrote the bar a $500.00 ticket because a pack of cigarettes was within the view of the public!!!!! How many wars have you fought for your country? How many years were you apart from your children to be in some war in some sand box thousands of miles away? When‘s the last time you came back from a war zone to be greated by your OWN children with fear because they didn’t know who you are? How many times have you risked your life, your future and your children’s future for this country?

The act of buying and displaying this flag, which is obviously NOT an American flag, is legal for this man to do as an American citizen. Regardless of how tasteless you BELIEVE it to be. You have every right to dislike this man for his actions. You have every right to not buy his goods and services (if he owns a business) and you have the right to tell him that you disagree with his display. It was painfully clear they had no argument when they start their rebuttal with name calling, trying to tarnish my reputation as a soldier. Is it so hard to believe that a soldier could believe in freedom for everyone, not just those that agree with me?
The problem is, if you allow the Constitution to be bent to favor the Conservative or Republican mind set, then it can be used by the Liberals to bend in favor of their mind set. The Constitution is the middle ground, allowing every American certain freedoms. It shouldn’t be bent or ignored regardless of your intentions. You follow it. That’s it. Bring freedom back to America!
And I still get called a liberal commie because I’ll defend those that I disagree with. I didn’t sign on the dotted line to defend freedom for Conservatives. Only a strict adherence to the Constitution will bring true freedom back to America. That means neither side will be favored.

McCain is a patriot that suffered greatly while in uniform and does not deserve the ‘ugly mug’ comment – it was unwarranted and uncivil. The flag is a symbol of this great nation and to casually shrug off a disrespecting of that symbol says more about you and how you view this country.
Francis Scott Key was so moved by seeing the flag still flying at dawn after the bombardment on Fort McHenry that he composed what we know today as the Star Spangled Banner. It wasn’t just a piece of cloth, it was a proof that we still stood.
Many veterans eyes tear up watching the flag raised at dawn as they know the blood that has been shed to protect the freedoms the flag represents – many of their brothers in arms that did not leave the battle field but gave their all for that symbol that means so little to you that defacing it is no big deal.
I find people like you puzzling – freedom of speech can mean disrespecting the flag but don’t sing ‘God Bless the USA’ as you might offend someone, don’t say Merry Christmas as you might offend somebody – but veterans offended by this disrespectful act on the flag they fought for, well get over it – it just a symbol no big deal.

Not a single person died for the piece of cloth, they died for the values and freedoms the piece of cloth represents, which includes the freedom of speech and the freedom to express one political opinions, if that is not the case than the flag wavers have turned this nation into a facist one.

I did not say you had no right to lower yourself to name calling, only that someone who suffered while in uniform (I never went into McCain’s senate record) deserves a level of respect. I also love the ‘distraction’ argument. Yes there are many more important things going on but that does not mean one must ignore the smaller things as well. I think most Americans can walk and chew gum at the same time. Many people have a very high level of respect for the flag and if we are so politically correct we must cave in to every minority because we don’t want to offend anyone, why can’t we say disrespecting the flag offends veterans and we just should not do it. After all, their contributions to this great nation far exceed all others.

The flag IS a symbol. The fact that there can be an infinite amount of flags made, makes it a clear symbol. I can make it my avatar right here on this website. I can make it into a Tshirt. Or a bumper sticker or make one small enough and put it on my car. To say it’s not a symbol is moronic.
It’s a symbol of America. Of America‘s greatness and of America’s failures. It’s a symbol of freedom and of those lost. It’s also a symbol of how we conduct ourselves around the world.
Do you think everyone looks at the US Flag and just feels warm and fussy inside? NO. The flag represents everything we are as AMERICANS. Past, Present and Future. The core representation of the flag is our freedom. Liberty. That liberty includes being against the US Government, which is also represented by the flag. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly.
You cannot just look at the flag and only see the good it represents because around the world, that flag represents bad things as well. Even nationally, it’s looked at negatively. You all obviously oppose the current administration, correction? Well that flag represents the government as a whole as well.
I’ve almost gotten into fist fights over this conversation with fellow soldiers. Burn the flag. It doesn’t hurt me. If that’s what you need to do to convey your message, you have the freedom to do so.

That‘s my exact argument I’ve used when debating this with fellow soldiers. My friend‘s didn’t die for a piece of cloth. My good friend didn’t lose his leg for a piece of cloth. I didn’t sacrifice several years of my life, years I spent apart from my children, for a piece of cloth.
Those sacrifices were made for FREEDOM. How much sense does it make to protect the SYMBOL of freedom by destroying the actual REAL freedom is represents?

Report Post »A mother dies unexpectedly. Later on, her teenage “boys” were working on a car engine and ran out of rags. One of the boys was rummaging through some boxes and found a simple-long-white dress and took it out to the other boys and they ripped it into size pieces to use to wipe etc. grease & oil from repairing the car engine. Years later, the one daughter wanted to wear her dead mother’s simple-long-white wedding dress for her own wedding. Family members could never understand why the boys disrespected their dead mothers wedding dress. One boy said something like he didn’t know…“they” just needed something for rags to work on their “hobby”. The End.

If it was merely a piece of cloth then it is one our military have always bravely carried into battle and upon gaining ground have triumphantly raised it. One of the most moving photos during WWII was the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. Francis Scott Key was so moved to see the flag still there after the battle at Fort McHenry he wrote the Star Spangled Banner. After 911 three fire men stood on the rubble and raised the flag. Not because it was just a piece of cloth but because it represented we still stood strong. Were your eyes dry when the flag was unfurled from the pentagon as it smoldered from al-Qaida’s attack? As it was during Francis Scott Key’s day, to see it flying gave us hope amid those tragic days. That is the piece of cloth that men have died carrying into battle.
American Soldier, sorry you are so jaded. I pity anyone who lives in this nation and upon seeing an American flag burning, flying upside down, or desecrated and is not sadden. People have the right under the constitution but it doesn’t make them right.

Why would you even imply that I wouldn’t be sadden to see such a thing? Just like Justangry said, I hate the idea of flag burning or flag desecration. But I hate the idea of removing that freedom to express their own disgust against the government even more.
I would never burn the American Flag. I have fought with that flag on my shoulder. I respect it with everything that I am. However, what I truly fought for was the freedom that it represents. That freedom is more important to me than the symbol of freedom. Why can’t anyone see the difference in that? How can you stand there and say you will defend the SYMBOL of FREEDOM by removing the FREEDOM ITSELF! What good is the symbol of freedom if we no longer have the freedoms it represents?

Do you listen to your own logic, ever? I mean, really, do you ever sit there and actually LISTEN to what you’re arguing?
You put down the totalitarian governments that would punish people who burn their nations flag….. but then you go to say that we should punish people who burn our flag? How does that make any logical sense?
