Lions Players Celebrate by Mocking Broncos QB Tim Tebow’s Praying

You don’t have to be a football fan to know who Tim Tebow is. He’s the current Denver Broncos quarterback and former University of Florida Heisman Trophy winner. He‘s also an ardent Christian who doesn’t hide his faith, and he regularly — before, during, and after games — drops to one knee to thank the Lord. But his praying has become a worldwide internet sensation, with people from all over taking pictures of themselves “Tebowing” — or dropping to one knee and pretending to pray. In fact, two of his opponents did it in celebration during this Sunday’s blowout win over the Broncos.
So are you still confused as to what “Tebowing” is? How about some visuals from the site devoted to it. There’s the original from Tebow himself:
There’s Tebowing in Halloween costumes:
Tebowing in war:
At the altar:
In Rome:
And even kids are doing it:
But it was the Lions — who played the Broncos in Denver on Sunday — who grabbed the most headlines for “Tebowing” during the game. See, Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch sacked Tebow during the first quarter, and instead of gyrating or screaming or hovering over Tebow like an alien spaceship, Tulloch instead hit his knee and “Tebowed:”
But the Lions weren’t done. In the second quarter, former Bronco Tony Scheffler caught a touchdown pass and celebrated by doing some half-hearted Tebowing:
So what do you think: Was it “low,“ or ”whoa?”

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 9:13amThe whole thing with Tebow is very interesting. Jump over to huffpo and see what bloggers say about him. He is hated by the left. They hate him because they see his belief in God as being real and visible. When Obama stood up during the last election and claimed Christianity, the left did not care, because fake does not bother them.
In a day when pro athletes are arrested for drugs, violence, and all manner of other crimes, the left picks Tim Tebow to mock and hate.
I hope the lions smoke in hard and loose ever game the rest of the season.
I could care less if Tim Teabow is successful as an NFL quarterback. I believe the good Lord may have use for him either way.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 9:17amPRB…yes, you are right, I suppose praying does not “require” a pose as you call it. But dropping to your knees is a way to show humility, honor, reverence and submission to the creator of all things.
What bugs me is people bowing or kneeling before royalty or other heads of state….and they do that in public. Guess they’re just trying to get attention.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 10:39amPosters here are ripping Tebow for “Showing off” about praying in public? He does it on the sideline, not when he’s standing on the 50 yard line after picking up a first down, or as a touchdown celebration. The only time I’ve seen him do it on the field is after the game is over, when dozens of players from both teams meet up at the 50, and pray together. I’m a Bronco fan, and I am NOT a Tebow supporter ( I don’t think he has what it takes to be an NFL QB), but with that said, I’d much rather have a role model like Tebow for kids to look up to than pretty much any of the other pro athletes that kids worship these days. He’s not waiting until the cameras are on him to pray so he can have 30 more seconds of face time on TV – he prays when he wants to….just so happens cameras are on him 24/7.
To me, mocking someone’s faith is beyond disrespectful. What would you have to say if a pro athlete had a big play, then pretended to roll out a prayer rug, got down on his knees, faced Mecca, and began bowing? Over the line, or just good old fashioned fun? Do you think Muslim athletes should be offended by such a thing?

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 12:07pmThis is so a non-issue. Notice in the first clip how Tebow taps the guy as he’s getting up. This is fun and games for them. Yes they mock each other. They do it on the field, they do it to get under each others skin, and at the end of the day, they laugh and drink beers together.
That’s the world of sports. And if you don’t like it, well then I guess we should go the progressive route and no longer cheer or jeer a team in fear of “hurting someone’s feelings”.
—On a side note, the Lions just a couple of years ago were the only NFL team to go 0-16 in a season. They were made fun of by everyone in the league, fans and teams alike. This year they are off to their best start in 50 (yes 50) years. Let them have their fun.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 12:25pmI don’t see it as “showing off” at all. As Christians we are to be a testimony to God, we are to be a light to the world. As Jesus said in Matt 5:14
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your lights so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
It is the progressive, liberal left that has convinced us the “politically correct” thing is to keep our religious practices private and not express them in public. I say pray on Tebow, show the world that you are NOT afraid to express yourself and honor your God no matter how you are mocked and rediculed. The only opinion that matters is Gods, and you are honoring Him and being a shining light, an example of what it means to show thanks and honor, to all who see you. Thank God for people like you who are not afraid to show their faith in public, people who refuse to cower to the pressures of “political correctness”. More should be like Tim Tebow.

It really annoys me when people take a quote from the Bible and mold it and use it to fit an agenda. This verse is one of the few the left actually know and only because they can use it to try and stifle religious practices by Christians. Its just like they do with the Constitution, memorize a few sentences they can use to push their agenda while totally ignoring all the other lines that go AGAINST what they are saying.
This verse is NOT intended to tell people to never pray in public, to lock themselves in a dark room to talk to God. He is talking about the importance of what is in peoples hearts. He is saying don‘t just pray for the sake of being seen as somehow holy or righteous by men if your heart isn’t with God. Some people are all talk but don’t live the life. The verse ahead of that one talks of charity, and to give charity without blowing trumpets and saying “Hey everyone, look at me, I just donated a million dollars” while not really caring about the people you are donating to, but rather caring that everyone is looking at your “good deed”. God looks at our hearts, not our actions, that is the point of this verse. That it is better to do it in private with sincerety then in public without. But it does NOT mean that you should never pray in public. So many more verses tell us the exact opposite, so try reading the context before just spouting verses to fit an agenda.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 1:48pmUSAMama. I am not a Leftist. I am a conservative who was taught that scripture at an early age, as I was taught not to be ostentatious and make a show of religiosity, but to simply live it. I believe that the “light” that we are supposed to let shine is our example of Christlike behavior toward others. That doesn’t mean that we are to be ashamed of the gospel, certainly not. But, there is a time and a place for everything.
There is no “context” in Matthew which changes the plain meaning of the words I have quoted. The interpretation you put on the plain language is just that — interpretation. But that’s fine. It’s a free country.
If Tim Tebow wants to make a show of praying, that’s up to him. It’s not that big a deal to me. But, if it were my son, I would probably tell him to say a silent prayer, just between him and God, not the entire stadium and TV audience.

Your right, you are not a leftest, I am sorry I should not have painted you with that brush. I looked over some of your previous comments and felt the need to apologize, I just have seen that particular scripture used by the left so many times to paint Christians into a corner and legitimize keeping prayer out of the public square that I had kind of a knee jerk reaction. So many “Christians” go to church on Sunday and then have the attitude “Well, I’ve done my Christian duty for the week” and go on Mon-Sat lying, cheating and stealing. To me this scripture isn’t saying the answer is to stop going to Church on Sunday where you might be seen praying, but rather do the rest of the week in private the same you would do in Church in front of others. Be consistent with your faith, not a hypocrate only doing it when you think it counts and you get credit from others. From what I understand of Tim Tebow he lives the life not only on Sundays or on the ball field, but in his daily personal life as well. Therefore, he is not being a hypocrate and I think he should let his light shine and be an example to others. Now if he then went out boozing, lying and cheating then I would think it wrong that he put on a public display because that would be a negative testimony to the Lord.
Anyway, thats my 2 cents :) Again, I apologize for misunderstanding your intentions.

I will pray in public, but I don’t think God really cares how or where you pray, as long as you pray, and say the right things to him. Show him you love Jesus Christ, show him respect, show him you’re repentant and show him you mean it. Amen.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 9:18amRickBob and Symphonic: I think that bible verse is misinterpreted to mean we can only pray in our closets or homes and no where else. The exhortation you quote was meant against religious authorities and hypocrites of the day, whom Christ knew very well and spoke out against. Like all scripture, it must be interpreted in its entirety. If we use this one bible verse, we as Christians, could not every pray in public. For your discernment, please read these verses: ” I will therefore that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and contention.(1 Tim 2:8)” ? Or ” We ought always to pray…(Luke 18:1)” or Ecclesiasticus 18:22 “Let nothing hinder thee from praying always, and be not afraid to be justified even to death: for the reward of God continueth for ever.“ There are many other references such as ”Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all.” (1 Thess 5:16-18).
The early Christian martyrs openly prayed to God the Roman Colosseum before being torn apart by lions and other wild animals. The Colosseum was their version of a football stadium albeit a more deadly and bloodthirsty game. Would you have criticized them for praying in public? Tim Tebow is a Christian attempting to walk the walk. As such, his public witness for his Christian faith is fine. We need more of this in the public square to remind our secular culture of how far they have strayed.

“”"
10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”
“”"
13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”
I suspect when Jesus spoke about how the hypocrites prayed (you cited Mat 6), all that was seen of their public prayer was ALL of their prayer period. They prayed to the public arena only to be heard by all the people there. The hypocrites never prayed privately to the Almighty. So if Tebow does not pray as much privately as he does publicly, then Tebow is in trouble in his relationship to Jesus. But this guy gets so much attention, I am sure they pick up on his private prayers too, but mainly harass him for the public prayer.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 8:01amNot going to vote. We should be in constant prayer and Tebow shows himself to be a strong Christian by turning to God. That said, we should not make a big scene of our faith either.
Matthew 6:6 is SO often misinterpreted, but it does app;y here:
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
This does NOT mean we should hide our faith or our prayer, but we should also not stand in the synagog (figuratively) proclaiming ourselves to the Lord as the Pharisee of Luke 18 did:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
As for those mocking Tebow…What else should we expect from the secular world? I am sure many do it in love because they look up to Tebow and want to emulate him. Others do it to mock his faith.

How is synagogue figurative? It is literal and literal the word used in the original Greek. And you are sorta, kinda right… should you hide your belief? No. Should you do your prayer in secret as not to bring attention to yourself by grandstanding thereby dissuading others from turning to Him. Yes.
Funny “Matthew” 6:6 says nothing about faith and only prayer. I think YOU are the one misinterpreting.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 8:25amI do not think that Matthew 6:6 does apply here. You need to look at the motivation of the Pharisees and Look at Tebow’s motivation. The pharisees prayed to aggrandize themselves and Tebow prays in true gratitude to God. A lot of kids have been drawn to Christ by looking at Tebow and that’s a lot better than little kids looking up to Michael Vick. The difference is all in the motivation. Do you doubt Tebow’s motivation?

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 8:29amThe synagog is figurative in the sense that I used it here. Of course Jesus was being literal in his parable. But Tebow is not a Jew and does not go to a synagog. So it is figurative in this sense.
As far as Matthew 6:6, what is Tebow doing down on his knee? As you are sort of dense I will answer for you: he is praying.
I think you are just trying to pick a fight over past arguments. It is your problem.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 8:33amGonzo, you do have a good point. You meant Luke 18 though. Of course Tebow is authentic in his prayer, I do not think he is doing it for show. But what do others think? Maybe that is why God also gave us Matthew 6:6?

He is not a Jew? I thought believing in the JEWISH Messiah mad you “heir” and “descendants”? I thought being Jewish was a religion?(before Hitler that is) Hmmm, I certainly don’t see any recommendations for “church” behavior. I was simply trying to restore some context for you since you like to destroy it. Which is how you then misinterpret “Matthew” by using pagan christian glasses.
As for your response on “Matthew” 6:6… I have no idea what a football player has to do with it. You said that people misinterpret that verse. This is not true, YOU do because you don’t like the way it makes you feel. It probably would feel even more odd if you understood “closet” in the original language to mean tallit or prayer shawl. What an oddly Jewish thing for christians to do.
I have no problem with you and you are no problem for me. I scold you the same way I would any pagan, preachy, anachronistic, christian. If anything I hesitated after I decided to respond when I put the @, in and realized it was you. Because, you argue like you always do… deflect and insult intellect.(calling your beliefs pagan in origin is a historical fact not an insult) That’s why you are no problem for me.
I shake the dust from my sandals.

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 7:59amFolks we shouldn’t be so surprised, these players actions are derived from “positive” feed back from their fans, coaches, ownership and the NFL. “Clowning” as the term goes, the other team is expected at this point of the NFL timeline. Respectful play went the way of Marcus Allen, the last running back I recall who was a class act on each touch down he made. This game, a reflection of society, lacks humility and respect for your fellow man.
