Listen to Rand Paul’s Passionate Speech Against the Patriot Act

Rand Paul has been vocal opponent of the Patriot Act. In fact, he held up voting on the measure in the Senate in order to make a point and introduce amendments. And on the floor of the Senate yesterday, he laid out his position in a passionate speech.

Paul eventually agreed to let the bill go forward after he was given a vote on two amendments to rein in government surveillance powers. Both were soundly defeated. The more controversial, an amendment that would have restricted powers to obtain gun records in terrorist investigations, was defeated 85-10 after lawmakers received a letter from the National Rifle Association stating that it was not taking a position on the measure.

“Well I think there are victories and then there are symbolic victories, and I think we had a symbolic victory here in the Senate in the sense that we did get to talk about some of the constitutional principles,” Paul said, according to TPM.

“23 votes against the extension of the Patriot Act are much better than zero or one,” he added. “I don’t think it came easy, I’m kind of worn out. But I consider it to be a great success that we got to debate it.”

The “constitutional principles” and “debate” came during a speech from Paul on the floor of the Senate explaining his concern for the act. He invoked everything from Thomas Jefferson to even gold and guns, and made the case that the bill is “emotional” and nearly impossible to stand up to. Listen to a montage of his remarks below:

I find it odd that the Dems all shouted at the tops of their lungs when it was Bush’s Patriot Act, now Reid loves it? At least some conservatives have come to see how a chipping away of liberty for security is wrong, but why have the lefties suddenly decided it’s the greatest thing ever? Perhaps so they can use it like they imagined Bush was going to, to rob freedoms from political opponents. I have no idea but this is one of the strangest turnarounds I have ever seen.

They want to use it to ENSLAVE US using this against us. For example, they can use it EVEN IF THEY SUSPECT a tiny infraction of the law, such as tearing down one’s door (without due process) if they suspect you are a terrorist just because someone with a vendetta (someone evil because a good person wouldn’t do this) said you were. These leftist FOOLS claim to be wise and by keeping the Patriot Act, they want to take out the rest of us (good). LIFE IS ALL ABOUT GOOD VERSUS EVIL. THIS COUNTRY IS A REPUBLIC AND NOT A DEMOCRACY. We will vote them out. We will stand up to them. It will be a big fight, but we will do it NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES. I suggest the greatest 2 things we can do in initially is to PRAY FIRST FOR ISRAEL AND THAT GOD PROTECT AMERICA AND HER FREEDOMS and then VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE……IN THAT ORDER. Always include Israel in your daily prayers FIRST. If you do not pray for Israel or side with Israel, you are silently praying for evil AND blessing will not come to America. “Blessed is the nation who God is the Lord.” — Psalms 33:12

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they prosper that love you.” — Psalms 122:6

I agree 100% with Rand Paul in that we can catch criminals and bring them to justice without having to give up our liberty’s, but I ask the question who is in our Justice System? Are these Judges the Judges YOU would trust in following the Constitutuion? I am not confident in the ones put in place by the Clinton Administration nor this Administration as I see they are ones who would do their bidding against the Constitution. So perhaps the Patriot Act is something needed to counter balance those Judges who side with the criminals against America?

Obama was against the Patriot act when Republicans were in charge for two reason.
1 It was an easy tool to inspire outrage against the Republicans since a Republican President signed it.
2 He was worried that Republicans might use it like the Democrats and spy on the other party’s members.

Franklin was referring to giving up liberty permanently for temporary security. In other words, do we give up our right for self rule and submit to the crown for temporary protection from the Indians?
Or, in present day application, do we give up our guns in order for the government to save us from the terrorists who have guns?
      The answer should be obvious.

Much closer to the truth, Stagger, but still missing a key word. Between “little” and “safety” Franklin said: TEMPORARY. In it’s original context, Franklin was NOT trying to get the govt to back down infringing upon liberties like we use the quote for today. He was trying to get the Executive branch of the day to STAND UP, and DO its JOB of keeping the colonies safe (mostly from Indian attacks at the time). There’s plenty to criticize about the Patriot Act, but even Paul recognizes it attempts something (in the wrong way, goes too far, etc.) that we NEED the govt to do–protect us from WMD threats from terrorists using communications technology the 70s era FISA courts can’t keep up with. You can decry loss civil liberties all day long, but what do you actually propose that WOULD keep protections of our ESSENTIAL liberties in place WHILE granting us a more PERMANENT security? Paul’s been a little short on THOSE proposals…This is where ideological rubber meets the road, people.

HappyStretchedThin: Not fair to Paul at all. We are way pass the point of coming up with proposals but what is obvious to the Patriot and God fearing man is that there are many ways to protect to the Nation from the even “supposed threats” without infringing upon Constitutional rights. One is insane to believe that this was the best they could do and to trust their motives?? Especially in light of all we know. Seriously do you expect an educated American to trust the motives of Lieberman, Fienstein, Schummer Boxer Graham and McCain??

The Legislation is simple Treason. Really time to quit with all of the pretense for America’s biggest enemies are all Domestic not Foreign and all one has to do is listen to a little talk radio in order to see that the average American is awakening to this simple point!

The days of the Republican Establishment are few and numbered.. They will soon be harrowed asunder while the Constitutional Conservative will eventually be looked upon with respect and admiration.

I find it interesting that many contemporary Christians just do not believe that leaders can determine the level of misery a society suffers. And by doing the Lord’s will, we can change that. Somehow they see it in terms of “God being in control” or “this is the way it has to be” if the prophecies of Revelation are to play out. They use these as excuses to stand by and watch the world around us literally and figuratively go to hell. And, believe me, I know that God is in control. But I also know that while we cannot stop the march of prophecy, we can determine our place in it. To me, there is too much emphasis in the church these days on self improvement and self indulgence. The Lord wants us to have a personal relationship with Him. It really has nothing to do with trying to be all that you can be, or establishing the kingdom of heaven here on earth. Its not about you, or me. Its about our Lord. THOSE WHO KNOW THEIR SCRIPTURE understand that we are to hear and obey God, and in that there is peace and fulfillment. As James wrote in 2:17,18, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man say, Thou has faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” The point can be made that because of what the Lord did for us, and does for us, then we desire in our heart to do his will. Leftists and Obama DO NOT KNOW THEIR SCRIPTURE AND THEREFORE, DO NOT DO GOD’S WILL. ARE THESE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO FOLLO

No, Paul is ideologically blind on this one. EVERY law restricts freedom to some extent. The question is not whether freedoms will be eroded by laws, but what freedoms does a given law serve to protect. It’s adolescent to believe that liberty and security are equally weighted: liberty is the only thing worth securing. Security without liberty is the Orwellian world Paul is afraid we’re sliding into, yes, but liberty cannot exist without security. How very sad and how very preventable, were it not for the media who want ALL of this to be.

Under GW this bill was a little scare but it seemed to be alot more constrained and gear towards actual over seas terrorism. Now under this POS Eric Holder, it will probably used against who he preceives as the real threat. Gun owners, non-union workers, christians and anyone who may whisper oposition to open borders and big Gov.

“First” good for you, now instead of worrying about being first, at least use your brain to say something other than “Dibs”.

When will we wake up to the government creep. There is just too much stuff, and I really hope that this goes down soon, but it isn’t likely.

Liberty doesn’t exist without security, and WE ARE ALL OBLIGATED TO SECURE IT INDIVIDUALLY, not to be secured by law enforcement claiming they’re securing our liberties by restricting our liberties.

      It’s ludicrous.

I never delegated the security of my liberty to anyone. It’s me and my firearms responsibility.

      Abolish the TSA/Police.

YOU ARE A FOOL CLAIMING TO BE WISE. What you think is good, is really evil. What you believe to be evil, is probably good. Oh thou fool, when will you follow good and know that you are blindly following evil?

“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” (NIV) Proverbs 13:20 A wise person’s heart leads the right way. The heart of a fool leads the wrong way. (Eccle 10) “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools…” Romans 1:22 THERE ARE MANY OTHER WAYS TO COMBAT TERRORISM other than the Patriot Act, fool.

I think Rand should’ve fought harder against the Patriot Act. I‘m all for doing what’s necessary to keep us safe but there’s a line in the sand and I think this act crosses it.

By definition, no speech can be termed “epic” if it includes the words “willy nilly”. But good riff Rand.

      @staggerlee32

Agreed in terms of who’s running for POTUS. I’d vote for Rand Paul, but not Ron Paul.

I’d vote for Paul Ryan. I’d vote for Allen West.

I would have voted for Herman Cain, but I think he’s done too much damage to himself.

Completely agree with Akimus and Sintas Mase, didn’t think I would ever say that so wow I am having a moment.

A – completely agree the two laws need to go but please attacking bush? So where are you on Obamacare? The other two are child’s play to this one.

SM – very well said!! You’ve inspired me to take the kids and wife out to the back forty so they can practice incase Liberty calls. Couldn’t agree with your position any more. Well done.
