‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’: Couric’s Dream TV Show Now Airing in Canada!

In a story that has garnered a lot of attention, CBS News anchor Katie Couric recently called for a Muslim version of the “Cosby Show” in order to combat what she sees is American Islamaphobia. It seems Canada already has Couric’s dream show.

Every Monday night at 8:30, Canadians can tune into CBC Television’s sitcom “Little Mosque on the Prairie.” The show is wildly popular — enough so that it’s currently on its fifth season. The audience watches as a new imam and his mosque try to assimilate into the predominately Anglican town of Mercy. Each episode is rife with jokes about stereotypes because, as the show’s website explains, assimilation “isn’t as easy as they thought.”

Take the first episode of the series, for example, which features a Christian church member calling the “terrorist hotline” on the local Muslims and the new imam being arrested at the airport for a suspect phone conversation:

“I thought it would be interesting to do a series about what life is like in a mosque in a small community,” the show’s creator Zarqa Nawaz told the BBC in 2007. She says the inspiration for the show came from her own experiences as a Muslim woman who moved to Canada to work in a Mosque. That has apparently produced a wealth of material. Back in 2007, CBC Director of Network Programming Kirstine Layfield defended that material and the jokes about racial profiling and terrorism to the BBC.

“It is daring in the sense that it’s bringing it out again and discussing it in kind of an honest but funny way,” she said.

But not everyone is laughing with the Muslim sitcom.

“Little Mosque on the Prairie tries to sell itself as ‘Muslim Lite,’” writes Kidist Paulos Asrat in a 2008 American Thinker article. “But some Muslim commentators have denounced the shows premises, from the strong presence of women (“The fact that the women were sitting so close to the men is an abomination”, writes one blog commenter), to the non-Muslims caste in Muslim roles.”

According to Asrat, the episodes are laced with jabs at the dominant culture and traditions. He explains:

In an episode on a discussion for a New Year’s  Eve party, Amaar, the unconventional Imam (he’s young, has no beard and speaks with a clear Canadian accent, unlike those “terrorist” Imams) says “New Year‘s Eve isn’t really a big Islamic holiday”, and “Actually, in the Islamic calendar there is no last day of December”. His invitee responds, “There you go, it will be like [the New Year's Eve party] never happened” to accommodate Amaar’s tacit disapproval of the holiday. So much for the very Canadian sounding Amaar. In  his telling classification, holidays are either part of Islam or not. Muslims’ celebrations are so intricately linked with their religion, that even non-religious, secular holidays such as New Year’s are not acceptable.

“Such anti-Western remarks are peppered throughout the program,” he says. “And despite their jovial, light-hearted air, the jokes are ultimately on the whites and non-Muslims of the community.”

NPR picked up on that slightly in 2007 when it covered the sitcom. It made sure to point out that many of the jabs are actually meant to mock America.

“But the show has a definite subtext, although Nawaz denies it’s intentional,” NPR reported. “Canadians love to laugh at their southern neighbors in the United States.”

The news outlet goes on to quote John Doyle, a TV critic for The Toronto Globe and Mail: “The kind of redneck attitudes from some of the locals in the small town toward the Muslims is very much reflective of an American suspicion of Muslims and not a Canadian suspicion.”

Katie Couric would probably chuckle and nod.

    lf the limp wrists to our north can’t get it right with out offending muslim terrorists, why does catie think our candy coated version will appeal to them? After all if we make it realistic to their beliefs, even the fence straddlers in this country will take up arms and chase out every last one of them. There is no “winning” in trying to appease to the muslim agenda.

      Your hating on someone who thinks its a GOOD idea to show a positive view of the muslim culture so they are not so demonized and called terrorists? Similar to the Cosby’s who opened their eyes to alot of people that blacks were not the monsters depicted by the racists.

      There is no limit to the amount of hatred you people feel about little things. Most of you act so religious, yet you act counter to the way the Bible teaches. The Bible doesnt teach to hate people for no reason. Your hating on people you have never met for NO reason other than your own INTOLERANCE.

      People are on the defense and rightfully so. Sure, blame the media hype, but also, try blaming the perpetrators who WANT this fear to spread.

      The AA community DID NOT wholly accept the Cosby‘s because it didn’t truly represent them. Bad analogy. I doubt there’s even reputable data to support that it HELPED the AA community. Even now, a large part of the AA community rejects Bill Cosby’s philosophy.

      A silly sitcom does not put a band-aid on the damage that THEY created through violence and terrorism. If we are misunderstanding, shouldn’t that other so-called religion of peace act on that faith and help us to understand? Because if we are misunderstanding, kill all infidels, then I surely want to know how…..without the indoctrination that is. So far, the only message I see is ‘Die non-believers!’… when I’m having dinner with my family….so I’m like….WTF?

      Aren’t good Christian supposed to forgive their enemies? Just checking – at least the church I went to growing up taught me that! I mean 9/11 happened 10 years ago by Islamic extremists, not your everyday Muslims. Are you people not going to be happy until we kill off every Muslim in the world? You do know there are more Muslims than Christians in the world and in another decade in our country as well.       “You do know there are more Muslims than Christians in the world and in another decade in our country as well.”

      There are about 600 million more Christians than Muslims at the present time (2.1 billion vs. 1.5 billion approx). Islam is the second largest religion after Christianity.

    UNLESS just something out of thin air. She saw Little Mosque and decided no one in America would know. Well, I cannot make it an old Christian show. But, I can however make it a Christian on a show about a Muslim instead… I AM SUCH A GENIUS. That idea I just stole and readjusted is a million dollar project. Katie Couric lost credibility when she took a breath out of the womb. The doctors all know she was fake crying. What an elitist people are stupid thinking halfwit she is. I love how this page is news but, it also finds time to make people who try to make Glenn look bad…LOOK LIKE COMPLETE FOOLS.

    One more little rambling point. How bout we have like a sea world type park.     Liberals need fantasy to keep up their self-congratulating sense of moral superiority. That’s why they say things like Miss Perky did about a Muslim sitcom. She demands we should be understanding, but many Islamists don’t want to assimilate into the societies of their new countries. She doesn’t get that for the simple fact it would blow her overblown sense of superiority out her perky little ears.

    In Europe (France in particular), some Moslem neighborhoods are so bad even police won’t go into them. Non-Muslims are beaten on the streets, and any women not covered are called whores to their faces by the men. Basically, it’s enter-at-your-own-risk in those places if you’re not a Moslem.

    Where is Miss Perky when it comes to domestic abuse of wives and daughters? Let’s make a sitcom–the wife burns dinner and hubby beats the snot out of her in front of the kids. Real funny. Or even if Dad’s dead, the eldest son tells his mother what to do, and she better obey! I’m sure we can make an Edith Bunker type there, strictly for laughs, of course. And I‘m sure we can find frivolity and hilarity whenever daddy goes into his daughter’s bedroom for a midnight snack.

    Given Canada’s laws, I can’t see their show lasting much longer. I’m waiting for the complaints to flow, calling the show ‘hateful’ toward Islam. Or death threats against the show’s producers, which are never revoked (evidence Denmak a few days ago). You can bet that’s somewhere in the future.

    Yeah–Islamists are such a fun crowd! I’m sure there was also a warm and witty side to Heinrich Himmler, too.

    I cherished the first amendment, freedom of religion and speech. They want to live in a land where religious law is dictated…they also reproduce 9 to 1…how long will it be until non-Muslims are outnumbered?…Wake up America! They have already infiltrated our government…right behind the progressives…it is not the huge news reports that we should be tracking…it is all the stealth bureaucracy implementation behind the scenes we’ve got to watch and shine a light upon…as you know, Bloomberg is heavily involved in developing a Sharia Financing conglomerate overseas…why?     Katie Couric is enjoying the spoils of being an american, such as her job, her money, her freedom, etc.

    I would love to see her stripped of all that then placed in a “quaint little village somewhere in Afghanistan, or Pakistan, Iran or Iraq. Then she could realize and live out her dream of being a part of the “friendly Muslim” lifestyle she dreams of having here.
    Kate…your fantasy is already available to you and all the folks that feel and think like you! Just give up what you have now in a free country, then move your ass to the land that you long for… IDIOT!

    It is a funny show. Just watched the first two episodes and there it was all about how English speaking Muslims who have no problem fitting in with us and tolerating western culture have so many problems with narrow minded westerners, except the christian preacher, who accepts them all for some unknown reason.

      America has liberals, conservatives, and moderates. Canada also has liberals, conservatives, and moderates. It’s just our leadership that is pathetic, not the population. The average Canadian can’t stand the government here. It’s a running joke. It’s all you hear people talking about at every coffee shop, which are about the last bastions for common sense left in the country. We aren’t regulated there yet. If you want to get an idea, just listen to Mark Steyn, who I think you’d like.

      Every day when I follow links from here or Drudge to leave a comment, I see dozens of narrow-minded comments from Americans who think Canada is a single entity… just like I see narrow-minded comments from Canadians who think America is a single entity. Obviously both are wrong.

      We do have a body count from Afghanistan, you know. Families are shattered here too… so yes, Canadians understand terrorism. Do you think we don’t have televisions either? We saw 9/11. Some of the dust from the WTC landed here in Halifax. Geographically, we’re closer to ground zero than most places in America. We didn’t feel any safer just because it happened on the other side of an imaginary line. We also didn’t see it as “America” being attacked. We saw it as “our culture” (western) being attacked, and fellow innocent humans being murdered. We risked our cities when you diverted your flights here, any one of which could have slammed into a building. We also housed the displaced passengers for weeks and sat with them in front of the TV, bewildered.

      We’re all humans. When something happens to you, we feel it too. Don‘t act like we’re heartless America-hating morons. There isn’t anything stopping terrorists from striking here either, and we know it. We’re the same landmass, and we’re both in Afghanistan. Our snipers are hated by the Taliban, and we have gotten threats and exposed plots in Ontario.

      There’s no point in creating division. When you hear something about “Canada” don’t apply it the the population. It’s the leadership and the media. You should already know this; America is wrongfully hated all over the world because of your leadership and MSM propaganda. You must see the comments everywhere too, and surely they must frustrate you. This whole “Canada and America hate each other” thing is an illusion. Talk to average people (who are actually informed), and we’re pretty much the same: frustrated, and beaten down daily by idiotic regulation to the point of insanity. People just want to live their lives, but instead we’re constantly being poked at.

      We’re both suffering under the same shroud of federal idiocy: When we sent emergency crews to help with Katrina, they got stuck in “sexual harassment and racial sensitivity training” instead of saving lives. And that was from your federal government… even though they already wasted their time on this self-defeating trash back here at home. Our radio is regulated to death… just try finding a voice of reason on the radio. Conservatives are banned from speaking at universities under “hate speech” laws. Print media is worthless. The only place for sanity is the internet, American radio, or like I said, coffee shops. Sound familiar? You’d think we had your current FCC.

      Believe me, we feel your pain. We aren’t all a bunch of mindless slaves up here. Financially, we made some better decisions recently (amazingly) but socially, we are pretty much identical.

      But also, seems younger people are very uninformed here. Alot just seem to believe the media. They don’t have a clue what is really going on in the States at all.(i.e, Obama and his terrible policies, etc.) Drives me nuts.

    I was watching TV with my GF a few months ago… a commercial came on. Can’t remember what it was. Something for kids. They showed a white kid, a black kid, and a native kid. Right when the commercial looked like it was about to end I looked over to her and said “Uh-oh, they forgot the Asian kid… someone’s going to be in trouble!”

    Then the very last line was given by an Asian kid… I called it perfectly. We laughed so hard.

    Liberals are NEUROTIC.

      Katie needs to move to Saudi Arabia. There she could produce a real and true reality show titled
      “Little Tent in the Desert”. She could even star as one of Ahab the Arab’s ten and his most favorite wife. She could be shown feeding and grooming the camels and performing “Corral Patrol” which consists of removing the solid fecal matter deposited daily. She could be seen as the leader of the other wives, performing the household chores as sweeping out the tent, sand scrubbing the cookware and dishes, toting water from the oasis and aiding cooking over an oil lamp. She could have a starring role in the preparation of Ahab’s 11th wife, a 13 year old from the next oasis just twenty dunes away.

      I don’t think that the Canadians would be laughing or be so tolerant if it was them that had nearly 3,000 people killed when planes were purposely crashed into some of their buildings. Not if but when the Muslims start making a concentrated effort to change Canadian society similarly to what is taking place in the U.K., I think we will then see a drastic change in the Canadian tolerance. Even so, how much actual violence has taken place against Muslims in the United States. Yes there has been isolated incidents but they have been isolated. There has been more Muslim on Muslims violence, such as honor killings, here then any other.

      Well my relatives are mostly in Canada .. my parents came here from Canada in the 1940′s .. The relatives always say that they don’t have to spend so much money on DEFENSE because we would defend them — NOT SO FAST CANADA …. if those *****’s want to move to Canada and live in Canada and RULE Canada … I have no problem with that .. we should strengthen and then should that happen CLOSE THE BORDER!

      Yes they tend to be a pretty “smug” group regarding the U.S. …

      Firstly, you folks need to learn about your neighbors to the North. For the record, the CBC is a leftist, government-funded institution. It does not have to compete for ratings or advertising revenue and so doesn’t care how many people watch its politically correct, socially engineered productions. Its mandate is simply to provide Canadian content. Canadians pay dearly for the CBC and, while most of us would like to see it defunded, it has become an untouchable sacred cow. Don’t judge all Canadians by the socialist propaganda you find on the CBC.

      Secondly, understand this; we are your mirror. We are where you are going to be unless you continue to stand at the gate and be the resistance. Our creeping socialism began with Pierre Trudeau in the 1960s and has been progressing, inch by inch, each and every year, while most of were asleep at the switch. We didn’t have an Obama type who burst onto the stage, hell bent on transforming our country overnight. We didn’t see it coming. Since then socialism has infiltrated every institution. With the benefit of hindsight, conservatives in this country were horrified that the folks in your country would fall for such a charlatan as Obama. Both print and TV media in Canada are overwhelmingly socialist. Talk radio show hosts, such as they are, must always present both sides of an argument, have no opinion on either, and will apologize or terminate any conversation that dares to venture too far off the politically correct path. To do otherwise will risk finding yourself in front of a Human Rights tribunal that boasts a 100% conviction rate. To avoid the risk, most talk show hosts prefer to discuss really important issues, like what is “must see” TV in your household. Between the fodder offered on both radio and TV, Canadians have to work very hard at learning the truth. Worse, most Canadians believe that what they read in the newspapers and hear on the TV or the radio, is the truth.

      Believe me when I tell you that we aren’t laughing at you. Rather, we are horrified watching you speed down the socialist cliff at breakneck speed. It is only our socialist elite who “tend to be a pretty smug group regarding the U.S.” and that, my friends, is only because they have been able to implement so much more of their socialist agenda. They laugh at what they perceive are your futile attempts to fight back against the growing socialist tide. I don’t think any of you fully understand the poison pills that have been buried in the legislation your representatives passed over the last two years.

      Many informed Canadians know what’s at stake for you. We already have socialized medicine, our own version of death panels, a fairness doctrine, hate speech laws to prevent public expression, government regulation up the wahzoo, and a growing taxation burden that confiscates more of our income than any of our other expense combined. Sharia Law has been banned in Ontario and the proposal to use public tax dollars to fund private religious schools (including Islamic) was voted down. We’ve had to deal with our own share of honor killings in this country and have fortunately thwarted our own Muslim extremist terrorists plots.

      Sadly, because we’ve lived under the socialist thumb for so long, Canadians lack the spirit and conviction of the U.S. people to stand up and say “Hell No…No More” and mean it. But we are watching you organize and take personal responsibility to educate yourself and others around you. We watch as so many of you make plans to take back your little corner of the country and to do everything you can to set things right again.

      We wish you great success…because as you go, so does the rest of the world. It is a huge burden to place on one country. But you are our last, best hope, that shining city on a hill. And if you don’t think you are setting an example for the rest of us, think again. Canadians are watching and listening and taking notes. Toronto, a socialist bastion, for as long as I can remember, voted in its first real conservative mayor. And we have a conservative Prime Minister, albeit in a minority government position, but I don‘t think he’s going anywhere soon.

      And finally, conservative Canadians are beginning to speak out. Just like when Glenn put together that collage to show you that you weren’t alone, for the first time, I am hearing Canadians speaking out, reaching out, and finding they aren’t alone either. And they are echoing many of the same sentiments that you’ve expressed. Maybe there is hope for us yet. Maybe we, who know what is right, will get the last laugh. Together. So thank you for that. Thank you for showing us the way. And know that most Canadians are watching you with great admiration and respect.

      If Muslims have a “beef” against Christians for believing in the triune nature of God, what is it to them? Christians aren’t beheading Muslims for not believing in Christ, but hundreds of thousands of Christians are being murdered for not believing in Mohummad.

      We Canadians have been watching this show for about a year and I hate to admit is hilariously funny … but I’ve seen how tv programs are designed to desensitize viewers to accept nudity, bad mannered kids, vulgarity or promote immorality.       Just so everyone knows, the show is not wildly popular. The only reason its in ints fifth season is because it’s a CBC production (Canadian Broadcast Corporation), the country’s government run TV network. With an annual budget of 2 billion dollars the network produces many shows that nobody watches, but because they don‘t have to make any profit they don’t care if there are ratings to justify continuing it. They just keep making this crap, and we just have to keep paying for it.
      As for this show, the Muslims are portrayed as the tolerant intellects, and the Canadians are portrayed as dimwitted ignoramuses. Yea, it’s a laugh riot all right.

      Christians can be as extremist as Muslims. I won’t deny that in recent history, Muslims has had the most extremist per capita then the Christians but if you actually read and followed your old testament to heart, you’d be out there killing non-believers and homosexuals in the name of your religion. Not all Muslims are extremist just like most Christians are no longer extremist. Christians still have the potential to have that extremist mentality. Most of you are prime example.       Little Mosque on the Prairie is aired in Canada by the government run CBC television network. Subsidized to the tune of $1.6 billion a year, the CBC is not subject to the rules of the free market like other networks. The CBC itself is watched by a small minority of our population to begin with. Little Mosque on the Prairie draws only 400,000 viewers and even that number is suspect. Unfortunately there is a segment of our country that actually thinks shows that denigrate mainly white Christians and portray them as morons on a Muslim friendly show is funny. The vast majority however are not laughing. The show was renewed for a 5th season despite continued declining ratings, thanks fto the aforementioned fact that the CBC is paid for entirely by taxpayers, so it can air politically correct but unpopular crap. The truth is that Little Mosque would have been pulled off the air years ago if the CBC had to pay its own way and rely on ratings to pay their salaries. Calls for a Muslim sitcom by Katey Couric are not well thought out. Too many people are immune to propaganda and will not be swayed by a Muslim version of Cosby. They’ll simply refuse to watch and it will die a sad and lonely devoid of an audience required to sustain it. Then again Ms Couric is free to use her own money to back up her words, but I doubt that she has the courage to do so when it’s so much easier to ask someone else to do so.
