Live TV Captures Massive Tornado Tearing Through Tuscaloosa

A mile-wide tornado crushed sections of Tuscaloosa, Alabama late this afternoon.  A tower camera at WBRC-TV captured riveting live video as the tornado moved through.  The TV team can hardly believe what they are seeing:

My heart grieves during this storm. Thanks to all of you who prayed, we needed it. My family was in the line from Mississippi to Alabama to Tennessee and Georgia. They are reporting that the town of Hackelburg, AL is missing, Dadeville, AL took a direct hit and Catoosa, GA has had to call in mass casualty trailers. Alabama Governor Bentley has called for help from the National Guard for search and rescue. The Weather Channel reports this as the worst outbreak of tornados in American history. God forgive us and have mercy on us. I pray for family, friends and for this storm to weaken. I am so grateful for everyone of you praying, I cannot thank you enough. We’re not out of the “woodwork” as of yet, my area is next.

I am a native of Tuscaloosa and alum of UA, and a thirty-two year resident of Birmingham. I watched this tornado on live television as it churned its way through T-town and later just a few miles from my back door on Red Mountain. It was an awesome, terrible sight to behold. I’ve seen videos like this before, but never live in my own back yard. It was truly horrifying. Please pray for us.

This is not a time for Alabama vs Auburn. I pray everyone one is safe and that the families that have lost loved ones will find peace. Death toll at 25 right now in Alabama

It has been so dry here in Eastland County, Texas we pray for any kind of storms like this with rain in them to help water our livestock. This series of storms started about 45 miles from here, west of Abilene over the weekend headed east. We knew there were confirmed Tornado on the ground but were praying they would come our way and bring a little rain. We can handle a little wind, we are use to that, but dirt starts tasting bad after about six months. Lord, please bring us a little water.

We have the best meteorologists in B’ham. They take this weather seriously. If there is a tornado warning in the market they do wall to wall coverage. It is 9:45 now and they have been on the air non stop since 2:00 this afternoon. They do keep us safe.

My friend and I were in Birmingham when we watched the video of the tornado unfold live. One of our best friends lives in Tuscaloosa; thank God he was safe. Unfortunately, the tornado came barreling towards Birmingham, so we fled south to our families, where lesser-powered tornadoes came through (we couldn’t get away, apparently). My girlfriend, a resident of UAB, decided to stay instead of come with me home. She saw the tornado rip through the city, towards where my father works. My dad, being a respectable ex-Navy man, had to be forced down to the first floor of his office because he wanted to keep working – to keep the T-Mobile cell phone coverage in the city up and running. But this move probably saved his life. So the people I know have been very fortunate.

Unfortunately, this is not the case everywhere. The reports now say 64 people have died in the storms. Residents in Birmingham are having to conserve water big time, as Birmingham Water Works is out of power. 176,000 people around the city have no power as well. Much of Tuscaloosa is destroyed, and there are a lot of people displaced. Tomorrow, I’ve got a test up at UAB (assuming they still have classes tomorrow), and I’m probably going to help in the cleanup effort there. Hopefully there will be a large turn-out. But right now, I think the sentiment of many people here can be summed up in my girlfriend’s last text-message: “What happens now?”

Ultimately, it’s up to us to decide that.
