Local Boy Scouts Troop In Trouble for Using Patch Depicting ‘Fleeing Immigrants’

A local Boy Scouts troop in Milwaukee, WI is under fire for an “unauthorized” patch it’s been using depicting fleeing immigrants.
Troop 11 has been using the patch for the last 10 years as a symbol of one of its patrols (each troop is divided into patrols). The name selected for the troop? The Border Patrol.
But while that may strike some as odd, especially for a troop that includes Latinos, one of the scout’s leaders explained that it was actually former troops who came up with it.
“The patch is used to symbolize that a scout is part of the ‘border’ patrol,” Assistant Scoutmaster Bradley Schultz told the blog Latino Rebels, which has dubbed the patch “racist” and has been leading the charge against it. “The image was chosen by the patrol as a whole, but a scout of Mexican decent, who was visiting family in Texas when he saw the iconic signs, is the who originally thought of the idea to use the image. We knew we wanted to be named Border, but we wanted an image to go with it.”
The blog has also posted an alleged email from Ryan Antczak, another assistant scoutmaster for Troop 11, explaining that the troop is made up largely of minorities who do not want to be associated with illegal immigration:
This had nothing to do with US BORDER PATROL. This was the name of the patrol the boys picked out that they wanted. The majority of the troop &the patrol are Mexican. They wanted this because they didnt wanna be associated with those that come to our country illegally. This has been part of our troop for almost 10 years. We are located in a very diverse area were the majority of Latin decent. No one has been offended till this day. We are not embarrassed by a branch of our government that serve this country proudly who put their lives on the line. [Errors are original]
The Boy Scouts’ National Council has weighed in and told the Huffington Post, “Neither the United States Border Patrol or the Boy Scouts of America were involved in the naming of the patrol, or the production or distribution of the patch.”
It’s also apparently told the troop there must be a change.
“We have been told by our council that if we don’t change the NAME of the patrol the troop will be disbanded as a whole,” Schultz told HuffPo.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:50amGod forbid the Boy Scouts object to the breaking American law. (or is it Allah… errrrr Obama forbid, oh well…)
Get real. At the nominating convention for AlGore in 2000… the Dem’s invited the Boy Scouts to the convention only to use them, and to boo at them, while on stage. This, to press their homosexual agenda. The simple understanding of the Lefts hatred of the Boy Scouts is found in the Boy Scout pledge… you know, the “… for God and Country” thing. I remember at the time, Rush compared the Boy Scouts, to “canaries in the coal mine” .. Back before they had explosive and poison gas meters, they would put canaries in the coal mines. If the atmosphere became so poisoned that the canaries stopped singing, it indicated a serious problem. The coal mine is America, and when the atmosphere becomes so poisoned that they boo the Boy Scouts. Well, when innocent children whose highest honor is to God and country, find themselves being used by evil, because of their refusal, to bow to evil. Something is bad wrong in America. For the Scouts to have this patch, is not racist… It seems strange, but it only seems that way. Honor is still alive in America, and can be found, at the local Boy Scout troop.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 1:20pmI’d tell the Council to take it up with the national organization (BSA). The BSA doesn’t authorize those patches, nor is their approval required. These boys are clearly taking an interest in current events and politics, and their views support their country. Those are key elements of the program.
The Scout Master should go over the head of the Council President. I’d give him 60/40 at having BSA side with him.

It’s not clear whether it was the National Council or the local Council that told them to remove the patch. The official statement by the National Council is typical – “We neither support nor….”
From Shultz’s wording, “…told by our council…”, I’d bet it was the local Council demanding they remove the patch. Local Councils are twitchy and can be cowardly. National takes their job really seriously.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 6:28pm@Jaycen – not necessary. Neither BSA national nor the local council have anything to say about a patrol patch. Every troop is OWNED by a Charter Organization and they are the ones who say what patrol names/patches can be used. They should tell them to shove off.

I do not advise any non Latino to banty about this term “Frijolero” but it sure is interesting and humorous to see these T-Shirts at the local super market!

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 1:24pmYes, please purchase the popcorn. Even if you don’t care for popcorn, you can purchase a tax-deductable gift that will be shipped to a soldier. The company the BSA is using currently gives 72% of each sale back to the BSA, and a large chunk of that comes back to that scout’s local council. I think it ends up being 30% of the total that comes back to the local council. Those are really good numbers.
This year, the company switched from metal containers to plastic containers so you’d get more popcorn for the same price. They really are a good company that keeps the consumer in mind.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:31amThe irony is, this image is taken directly from a sign off the freeway by San Diego. I lived there for most of my life and drove past the sign all the time. I had, at one time, been tempted to steal the sign because it was so funny to me.
Yes, that image is a REAL sign found off the freeway by San Diego warning people to watch out for, basically, illegal immigrants running across the freeway.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:31amI’m a lifelong scout leader, and this is a no-brainer. It was insensitive and poor judgment to allow this patrol name and patch to ever be created. Scouts are routinely allowed to come up with names for their patrols, and it is a boy-led organization, but this is a good example of why BSA has adult leadership watching everything and guiding the boys. Had I been a leader in this troop, my message to the boys would have been that there is a very good chance that some folks would be offended by their name, and that they should move on and come up with something else.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 11:40am@ WORDWEAVER : Great tag name since you can certainly ‘ weave ” something into your words. I strongly detect a large dose of political correctness in your posting. The patch was chosen by this patrol in the “ boy led ” Boy Scouts of America. The patch reflects a real sign on the U.S. – Mexico border. The only ones that would be offended by the patch OR the sign would be law breakers entering our Country illegally and a few namby-pamby politically corrected wussified liberals ! I sopport the B.S.A. with my time and money; my grandson is a Scout; BUT I carefully follow news about the B.S.A. to make sure the Scouts and their leaders are true to their motto and Scout Laws.

There are a number of BSA leaders who are wishy-washy and rather Progressive in their world-view. It’s been seeping into the organization for years. I think it’s because the whole country has been sliding that way for so long.
I disagree with Wordweaver, but his approach is valid. He didn‘t say he’d force them to change it, just that he’d bring up the point. He’s right that some people would be offended, but offending people and being strong enough in your beliefs that you can stand to the criticism is also an important life-lesson.
The boys are now living that lesson in real-time. I hope they come out on the other side stronger for the experience.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 2:06pmpolitical correctness would also mean that the boys could no longer honor god, country or family. It would mean that they were homophobs and anti-Allah and jesusfreaks. Stick to the Boy scout law and leave the boys alone for loving their country. If our leaders did, this nation would be better off. On my Honor I will try to do my best for God and my country….

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 4:52pm“Life long leader”?? Then you must have missed the part where the troop is a boy led organization. This patrol has not violated ANY bylaws of the national BSA, or, apparently, of the chartering organization. Note that this patch was created TEN YEARS ago and copied a sign on the Mexican border and is still approved by the largely Latino troop. Get the sign(s) taken down, then maybe some one will have an issue. GAL!

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 6:26pmNonsense. Neither BSA national nor the local council have anything to say about what a troop names its patrols. This isn’t a feel good, lolly pop and ice cream world. All this sensativity balogny is causing our relationship with The Living God to fracture to the point of self destruction. He will only put up with so much, and society has stepped over the line. He has given us warnings to turn back to Him, and they’re being ignored. If we are to continue under His blessings, we must become militant about following His ways. That means to repent and follow Him, or He will destroy this nation, as is already happening. Society is listening to the Great Deceiver, Satan. Read His Word.

Posted on April 7, 2012 at 7:50pmBSA scouts wear a small circular purple patch above their left breast pocket. It is the International Scouting patch, and reminds them that Scouting is an international organization. As such, it is open to boys of all races and creeds around the globe. Even Mexico. I am not one who is prone toward political correctness, but this patrol patch patterned after a road sign warning people of border patrol agents rounding up illegals to me seems inconsistent with the aims of the program and the brotherhood of scouting. The fact that they have been wearing it for ten years without any blowback is surprising to me.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 9:47amLet’s be clear there is only one way to cure the majority of the illegal immigrant problem. That is fine all the businesses that hire them $250,000 per illegal employee. While I appreciate focusing on the poor illegal who comes here looking for work, their desire is not the root of the problem. It is the businesses that hire them off the books for lower than market wages. The business owner is guilty of hiring them, in most cases knowingly, avoiding payroll taxes and probably a host of other labor laws. Time to go after the owners of landscaping, maintenance, construction, cleaning, etc. companies. The blaze could actually do something useful by highlighting the companies and individuals who employee larger numbers.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:59amWe have those deer crossing signs all over around here. Of course there are a few deer whining about it.
1) They believe their civil rights have been violated because cars aren’t obligated by law to stop or even slow down when deer make a last second decision to leap out of the shoulder ditch.
2) They believe they are being unfairly depicted as a group because not all deer have the suicidal desire to become bumper-burger
3) They believe they are racially targeted & discriminated against because there are many other critters that run across the road. And they are demanding that an equal number of warning signs depicting skunks, ‘possums, raccoons, cats, dogs, coyotes, foxes etc be put up.
4) They want the signs changed to show only SOME deer etc are illegal roadcrossers.
5) They are also offended by people wearing clothing with logos such as Mossy Oak, Realtree, North American Hunt Club and Venison – It‘s What’s for Dinner.
6) They say that unless their demands are met they willl bring summer vacation & fall harvest travel to a halt by blocking roads with massive protests, demonstrations and illegal encampments. Note: encampment kitchens will not give out food to homeless cats
I‘m betting they’re not all that commited to their cause and the protests will die out when hunting season opens.
