Locals Baffled by Crop Circles Appearing in Washington State

KHQ Right Now – News and Weather for Spokane and North Idaho |

SEATTLE (The Blaze/AP) — Mysterious crop circles have appeared in an eastern Washington wheat field – not far from the nation’s largest hydropower producer – but area farmers preparing for the summer’s harvest find the distraction more amusing than alarming.

“You can’t do anything other than laugh about it,” said Cindy Geib, who owns the field along with her husband, Greg. “You just kind of roll with the theory it‘s aliens and you’re special because aliens chose your spot.”

Friends called the Geibs on July 24 when the pattern of flattened wheat was spotted off Highway 174, about five miles north of the town of Wilbur. The field is about 10 miles south of the Grand Coulee dam, which the Bureau of Reclamation says is the largest hydropower producer in the United States.

The circles resemble a four-leaf clover and remind Cindy Geib of Mickey Mouse ears. The design knocked down about an acre of their wheat. Some of it could be salvaged by combines when the harvest starts in a week or two, she said, but some will be lost.

Crop Circles Appear in Washington State

In this July 30, 2012 photo provided by The Wilbur Register, crop circles are shown in a wheat field owned by Greg and Cindy Geib near Wilbur, Wash. The circles were first noticed on July 24, 2012. Crop circles have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades, and this is not the first one in Lincoln County.Credit: AP

“Of course, we don’t have alien insurance,” she said.

Crop circles have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades, and this is not the first one in Lincoln County. Similar circular patterns were left in crops in the Wilbur area in 2010 and in 2008 or 2009, Geib said.

Lynne Brougher, public affairs officer for the Grand Coulee dam, hadn’t heard about the latest crop circles but said the previous one was no cause for alarm.

“It seemed to be highly unusual,” Brougher said. “As I recall from a couple of years ago, there was no good explanation of how they got there.”

Still, she added, “it wasn’t a concern.”

The latest crop circle was first reported Tuesday by Spokane station KHQ-TV (http://is.gd/57FTpy). There were no signs that anyone walked into the field.

“We’re trying to figure out how they got out there without breaking any of the wheat. It’s hard to walk through the crunchy wheat and not knock it down,” Geib said. “At the same time, it‘s hard to think it’s aliens. It’s a bizarre thing to wrap your brain around.”

Geib’s daughter-in-law, Kelly Geib of Wilbur, says the crop circle has given the family something to ponder and chuckle about.

“The kids all like to say the aliens have come, and we’re happy to indulge them,” she said.

Crop circles that have appeared across the country and the world before have been attributed to pranksters. But that hasn’t stopped speculation, albeit lighthearted.

Mickey Mouse—-done by young bored farmer kids!! They know when the wheat will be harvested and they did it right before he was to cut down the fields! How simple is that….aliens….I don’t think so!
I come originally form a farm community….and the farmer kids used to do a bunch of things like that and mess with the wheat, shocked corn, and cows! I am sure someone is laughing hard over this. I think it is cool. :)

They might as well start having a lot of crop circles in Washington State, when they already have many invasive plants from Britain or other parts of Europe like the Yellow Archangel.

republicans also know that vandalizing someones livelyhood isnt funny. No crop circles don’t cause a huge financial loss but still those farmers bought the seed, invested the time to cultivate and care for it. So every stock of wheat damaged is an indavidual slap in the face of the people who grew it. I don’t call that a prank, I call it destruction of private property. Note to all who would pull this sort of stunt, most American farmers own guns and don’t like people prowling around their property late at night

I wonder if the creators of these crop circles were making fun of Americans (and even perhaps baseball players), while they were making the crop circles – playing the song “Three Blind Mice?

I have lived in eastern WA since 1968 and I have been around farming since that time. My wife’s family had a wheat ranch between Reardan and Davenport for 4 generations. There is no way to get to the center of a wheat field without destroying some wheat or making a trail of some kind!
To suggest that some kids used planks to reach the center of the field, as some have suggested, is as absurd as any statement could be. Let’s get real people. This is a real story. Please use your intelligence, time, and efforts in a productive manner to give some insight to the phenomena.
I am not saying aliens caused this. It is hard to believe that a wind storm or a rain and/or hail storm would leave such a pattern. The wheat is definitely knocked down by something. What could cause this?
It is easy to post sarcastic, irrelevant insults. How about some real thought and ideas to solve the mystery?

That’s amazing they travel light-years to come here leaving wonderful art in wheat fields. The more likely scenario is that a helicopter dropped off some people to make them, and then picked them up some time later.

The downdraft from a helicopter would cause more damage than a couple people’s feet. You can walk in a wheat field and not leave obvious traces (especially on aerial photos). Let’s not be silly.

Wow. It’s 2012. You must be baffled if the first thing you think of is aliens. Of the hundreds of crop circles in England there were 4 that could not be explained away by human activity. (according to the national enquirer). People were scared . Until the pranksters who did them showed up with video of how they did those last 4. Then everyone felt stupid.

Scared of what? Be real. If those do have something to with with something not of this earth, they are very shy and all they are good for is to make circles. Maybe they like wheat. Give ‘em a bite of it and they are, obviously on their way. It is just something someone is doing, so don’t worry about it. People get bored. They play games.

The Eastern half of the state is conservative….by a huge majority so do not think the whole state is that way. Not to mention the huge retired military population that tends to be more more conservative in the vicinity of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. And oh by the way, many of those in Eastern Washington are family farmers.

Dems dominate 2 – 4 counties in the rain-soaked puget sound. There are a few others that lean Democrat, but as Erik said, Eastern Washington is solidly conservative. The wet-siders pretty much hold the rest of the state hostage politically. The politics of Eastern Washington are much more closely aligned to the conservatism of Idaho, which by the way gets a bad rap for a small enclave of “white supremacists” who took up residence there. They have pretty much died off, and never reflected the beliefs of the general population.

If they would travel 100 trillion miles to make wheat swirlies, imagine what they‘re going to do when they discover the executive poser’s record:
      ==============================================
Nixon brought the troops home, this guy has just made more widows and cripple people, jerkwad!
By selling trees to Asia, not approving solar projects, not setting wind stands, and by promoting plant farming (vs. grazing and animal farming) he’s caused more enviro-damage than all of the Amazon rain forest damage for 40 years! He’s a monster.
55,000 dead in Mexico, mass graves, allowing continued trade of guns for druhgs, thereby rigging elections, promoting crime and destroying our youth, education and public safety nets.
Has attacked over 9 separate sovereign nations, &just approved direct military &CIA interference in Syria.
Missile shield threatens WWIII, too conceited to look at Salt I & II, Reagan’s missile shield plan? ……..What?
      Behind closed doors legislation
Has backed failure big and small, promoted inefficiency, created more entitlement morons than anyone in history, forget interstellar travel, this guy couldn’t even “dance with the Stars”, He‘s robbed success everywhere he’s found it!!!!!, And continues to do so!!!!

On second thought, go aliens!! I know someone that needs a swirlie.
