Los Angeles Passes Resolution Against ‘Intolerable’ Radio Speech

The Los Angeles City Council has passed a resolution condemning speech on radio that some may find “intolerable.”
According to the local CBS station in L.A., Councilmember Jan Perry “introduced legislation this week that would call upon media companies to ensure ‘on-air hosts do not use and promote racist and sexist slurs’ on radio and other broadcasts.”
The resolution, which the L.A. Times notes is only a “symbolic” move, passed 13-2.
“It’s exactly appropriate for this council to speak up against the vile things we hear on the airwaves,” Councilman Paul Krekorian told the Times. According to him, he doesn’t want to see free speech stifled, but rather is looking “to seek a greater consensus on what is appropriate speech and to reject what is not.” [Quote is referring to the Times' paraphrase -- it is not Krekorian's exact words]
That raises the question: Isn’t coming to a greater consensus on appropriate speech the beginning of censoring free speech?
Just consider what local radio host Dominique DiPrima of KJLH-FM (102.3), who supports the resolution thinks.
“Instead of censoring people, or firing people, we want to see representation in terms of hiring and clear standards of what can and can’t be said on the air,” she said. [Emphasis added]
And that raises another question: Who decides what is tolerable and intolerable beyond the regulations already set forth by the FCC?
KTTV reported on the resolution yesterday, before it passed:
LA City Council Wants Radio to Mandate What Their Host Can Say: MyFoxLA.com
“It is easy to become desensitized to what other groups find intolerable which ultimately fosters an environment where negative comments can go unchecked and corporate guidelines and policies are no longer being enforced,” the resolution reads, according to CBS. It calls on the stations to hire a more “diverse” list of talent.
According to reports, the resolution was initially aimed at local radio hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of KFI 640 AM who referred to Whitney Houston as a “crack ho” a few days after her death. (They were later suspended for a week.) But an amendment soon broadened the resolution to all local stations.
Also mentioned in the resolution? Rush Limbaugh for his remarks about Sandra Fluke.
Members of Black Media Alliance, National Hispanic Media Coalition, Korean-American Bar Association, and American Indians in Film and Television all supported the statement.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 10:00amHaving lived in CA all my life until August of last year, I weep for my home and where my parents and brother still live. My sister and older brother are left, one to Australia the other to TX where I am now as well.
there is no other state in the union with as much natural resources, farmland, and the ability to go from beach and surfing in the morning to desert four wheeling during the day to skiing at evening and night.
CA used to be the breadbasket of the nation now it is the WASTE basket! and that isn’t just because CA has 1/4 of all the illegals in the nation that burden the state with 10-20 Billion in welfare, education, and medical payments.
Sad….I truly weep for my home state and pray that those still there fix her soon.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 10:38amThe FCC should have authority to prosecute/fine over DECENCY standards, NEVER over CONTENT (offensive or not to anyone). This law is illegal on its face. And beyond the fact that it’s anti-1st amendment, even if it WERE legal it would produce the opposite of its stated intent. People will find more and more clever and indirect ways to say the same offensive things.
Report Post »The REAL way to deal with offensive speech is for the offended to use their OWN voices to demonstrate how offensive the offender is being. That way everyone remains free from the threat of government deciding what CONTENT is offensive and what’s not, as well as free to decide which side is the stupid side.
I for one call the LA city council STUPID.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 10:59amI lived in L.A. in the early eighties. I worked at Walt Disney Productions in Burbank, and it was during these years that California openly started on the path to communism. I was laid off in 1982, after my bosses found out that I voted for Ronald Reagan, even though I can’t prove it. It’s just a strong feeling I have had about that situation. So I packed my bags and moved to Indiana. No regrets and no reason to visit CA ever again! I feel bad for all the good conservative folks still there. But if you work in the entertainment industry out there and they find out yer a conservative, they will see you fired from yer job!

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 12:45pmCalifornia was at one time the greatest state for innovation and living a free lifestyle. Sadly the state has decayed beyond repair. There are so many rules, laws and polarization that living here is a nightmare. The state turned into the welfare capital of America and it will be just a question of time before we have to pay the tab. The smart businesses and people have moved away leaving a barren landscape of empty strip malls, housing tracks, and beggars on every Freeway exit. You can walk 5 feet without someone asking you for money. This is what happens when laws are not enforced and the productive people are punished. I would compare the State to the City of Detroit. It is very sad to see how far we have declined. I just cannot imagine any way that California can recover, because the majority of the population is an entitlement culture. Time to move…

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 3:08pmAren’t the people of Kalifornia fortunate to have a censor to stop objectionable content on the radio? Not!. The only problem, is who are the decision makers, and how do they decide, what and what not should be allowed to air. Where does the FCC stand in this matter. It would be wonderful to see the censors go after a few TV stations and movie makers who use their venues to support their agenda of propaganda. That will never happen, for many reasons. I think they are out to get Rush Limbaugh off the airwaves, for he is one of the few telling the truth, and they fear the populace will become informed of. If they do decide to go after TV, stations, one bias spewing station would definitely be banned for the vitirololic news of their pundits. But maybe not ,especially if they are protected by those who dictate their scripted diatribes. I won’t mention the name, but it is an off shoot of a larger once well respected news outlet.

Posted on March 23, 2012 at 12:19pmAh, the “consensus”.
Thank God for the “consensus”. Clearly, multiple people holding the same opinion is the same thing as freedom of thought and speech. Having a consensus is the same thing as scientific validity. Having a consensus is the same thing as empirical evidence and fact.
Do you know what you get when you form decisions by consensus? You get the worst possible outcome. When a committee tries to reach consensus, the result is the weakest possible decision. The least responsibility, the least threatening change, the least likely to get implemented.
People who talk about coming to a consensus are pathetically weak leaders.

If it had the force of law like a regulation or ordinance then it would be unconstitutional. This just shows you who they really are and what their desires are. Los Angeles now knows it lives under a fascist minded government and most there are happy with that condition. I would like to see more city and municipalities make statements of position desire so I know what type of people govern there.

These people, no doubt, would love to impose a politically correct set of restraints on radio and all other media. But let’s face reality, they have zero chance of accomplishing this in today’s world. If anything, control over information is slipping away.
One city council bows to leftism and rather unsurprisingly blows off public steam to placate leftist citizens. Hardly a big deal.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 9:43amThe city council will not be able to regulate what is already regulated by the federal government. This is I believe the second paragraph in the above story. “The resolution, which the L.A. Times notes is only a “symbolic” move, passed 13-2.” But, I am certain the council and other local politicians, media and such will apply as much pressure as possible. I would also expect the so called self compliant radio stations to attack the talk show stations with more conservative shows as well as try to provoke the believing populace. They can’t really do anything legally, but I can see the pressure coming.
