Losing Hope: Confessions of an Obama Supporter

Greg Smith used to campaign for Barack Obama full-time. Now he needs convincing that things will get better. (Photo: NY Post)
Greg Smith, 46 from New York, has supported Barack Obama since the now-president announced his bid for the White House in 2007. But three years later the diehard Obamaniac has a sober admission: he’s losing hope.
In 2007, the New York Post featured Smith’s story — he was a converted Clinton supporter that left his work as a hotel doorman to campaign for Obama. Obama read the story and asked Smith to introduce him at a campaign event and also tell his story. He did, began campaigning for Obama full-time, and even was present backstage during the Democratic National Convention speech in Denver.
Obama won the election. Life was great — hope and change were alive. But now, reality has set in, and Smith — back at his old job – wonders aloud to the Post what happened:
Two years later, I’m living a more sober reality.
My life is not better. I‘m a college graduate and I still can’t get a good job.
I’m back working as a doorman at a Manhattan hotel earning peanuts because my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and I need the health insurance again.
I share the same sentiments of Velma Hart, the woman who confronted Obama at a town hall last week, saying she was tired of defending him. The idea of leaving New York is even on the table.
Obama has let professional politicians take over the White House — and our dream of change.
I know it’s childish to expect solutions to happen overnight. Obama inherited a big old mess, and I don’t expect him to have everything figured out after 18 months.
But we’re only human and we want to see some visible change.
I’m trying to keep up my hope — but I’m afraid that instead of being that guy who knocked on doors in Denver, I’m now the person who needs convincing.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 11:28amI’m trying to feel for this young man. However, even now he refuses to educate himself about the realities of Obama and what this means to his life. As a Black, I have and am trying hard to educate Blacks about the reality of not only Obama but Progressive liberals. As they continue to deny the reality of the destructive nature of Progressivism they will continue to be frustrated in seeing the type of real change that ONLY CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES AND POLICIES CAN BRING. My daughter once held these beliefs but now has been truly converted to conservatism.

It’s hard to blame people who were unengaged when the legacy media completely lied about Obama & spent all their time in Wasilla and none of their time in Chicago. Even some on the right have recently awakened to the hard cold facts. Most of the normal hard working people of the US were too busy making a living to pay much attention.
The Tea Party is the awakening for many. I hope it is not to late to save the Republic.

Quote: “Obama has let professional politicians take over the White House — and our dream of change.” Greg Smith and his kind still don’t get it. Obama is the problem not just the people he placed to surround him. He makes it sound like its all them but who put them in their positions? Obama because they have the same agenda for our country. Posted on September 26, 2010 at 10:54amPeople are lying when they say they didn’t expect solutions overnight. That is the kind of culture we live in. We have sex with someone and expect that there are no consequences. When we get pregnant, we can have the instant fix of an abortion. But somehow, even that doesn’t make things right. We spend on credit for years and then declare bankruptcy and wonder why we can’t buy a house – that bankruptcy was years ago! Liberalism offers ‘magic’ as a solution. You have problems? POOF! They are gone with a single magic spell! When we discover that magic doesn’t actually work (when we all really knew it in the first place), we are disgruntled, angry, and betrayed. To go for another magic solution is pure idiocy. The answer is in hard work and taking your hard knocks. It’s not magic, but it works (like abstinence) EVERY TIME IT IS TRIED.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 2:33pmI have been saying this since before he even announced his presidential bid…
I’m from Chicago and I can tell you that he has been absolutely open about his Marxist agenda since he served here. I referred to him as the most dangerous politician the US has ever seen and everyone treated me like I was some kinda crackpot conspiracy theorist, even by those on the right!
Now they [all of us] got their hell, and their fundamental transformation of America I was talking about 5-years ago.
I saw him speak several years ago, way before he was even a potential presidential candidate [back when people would say "Barack who?" - and I said to my self - "this guy is the anti-Christ." His legislative voting record proves just that...... When he says "hope & change" he has visions of Stalin in his head.
Obama's goal is to make Americans as miserable as possible and you can only take two positions with him, you're either with him or you're against him and if you're against him than he will take sadist approach with you....
This guy thinks its his duty to bring retribution to the world in the form of sadism on the US...
These aren't my "opinions" either [except for the anti-christ thing] – all one needs to do to figure this out, is do thorough research on him and his life. He was and is more than open and blunt about his feeling on America and what would make “us” right in his eyes…..

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 11:49amHe is so wrong. Obama did not “let professional politicians” take over the White House, he purposefully brought in the liberal-progressive machine. Wake up. This is who he is. He gives lip service to job creation and American values, but that is just a smoke screen to keep more moderate democrats on his side. His “fundamental change” is to move away from constitutional government as it was intended, and into a Marxist redistribution model and government control of our lives. We are all Homer Simpsons to this machine – stupid, impressionable, manipulatable. The problem is, for a large body of entitlement seeking, victim minded lemmings, his take is right on. The rest have just been politically sleeping through their normal lives. But the alarm bells are ringing and the dormant power of America is waking up. Let‘s just hope we’re not too late. This November and the election in 2012 is our last chance. Let’s not waste it. Get informed. Take action. Warn friends and neighbors and anyone who will listen. Posted on September 26, 2010 at 12:21pmThe reason people are losing hope is quite simple: Liberals & progressives were hoping to have a REAL progressive in the White House in charge of things for ONCE!
But no. The old saying that Richard Nixon was the last liberal President of the United States holds true even until today!
Ever since Ronald Reagan, every prominent Democrat politician has tried to somehow concede to the idea that the Supply Side Neoliberal Economic theoreticals embraced by Reagan were actually a GOOD thing. Barack Obama is no different. President Obama is just another post-Reagan Democrat whose actions resemble those of a moderate or even a conservative politician.
Just look at his health care plan: Normally slammed by conservative political opposition as “socialism,” the Obama health care plan is just the Mitt Romney plan, which was vetted by the Heritage Foundation. There’s really NOTHING progressive about the health care plan.
Look at gay rights: NOTHING has been done on that issue.
Look at the war: Iraq is not even done. Afghanistan has been ESCALATED. We’re bombing Pakistan. We’re supporting terrorist opposition in Iran through the CIA called Jundullah. Obama is MORE pro-war in ACTION than George W. Bush!

That notion is absolutely NOTHING more than liberals attempting to sell extremist Marxism as an ideology thats not a threat to the American way……
You know absolutely nothing about Obama and your post made that quite clear.
Furthermore are you not aware that these Marxists pasted “Obamycare” so they could CONTROL your life while decimating capitalism in the process?
If these Marxists actually were able to keep power, they would start attacking EVERY AND ALL industries that could potentially effect your health, MASSIVE GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS AND TAXES will soon follow on the air we breathe at work to the food we eat, they will attempt to CONTROL absolutely everything citing “health care costs” and the useful idiots will buy right into it — because to them — government knows best and ANYONE who has the audacity to question our dear Marxist government is nothing more than a “stupid dummy, racist hate-monger.”

In fact, from the perspective of the progressive power structure, Obama’s administration has been a stunning success. They have passed much of what progressives have been dreaming of for years. Still, there is more to come. Many would say he doesn’t have a chance to be reelected. I promise you he and his inner circle do not think that way. They think Americans are easily fooled, especially progressives. Yes, progressives, they don’t hold you in high regard. No wonder they think your stupid, even in your disillusionment you will not blame the appropriate party just like the doorman in this story blaming “professional politicians” that Obama “allowed” for his life not being better off. You’re absolutely right – Obama pushed too hard and too soon. The Marxists got snug within their position(s) and thought the world was theirs for the taking….
America isn’t brainwashed that bad just yet, they apparently believe we were.
They may have gotten away with a Marxist revolution 10-years from now, however they counted their chickens before they hatched and I’m grateful it happened now, rather before their brainwashing of America was at 90%.
They succeeded in the UK but failed here, and if anyone has an ounce of brain matter between their ears they would view the UK as what the progressive communists want here.
The only thing thats holding these Marxists up is our Second Amendment – they haven’t figured out a “legal” way to take our guns just yet, but they’re working on it via the appointing of communist Supreme Court justices whom have the final say…. They’re working on softening up the populace though and once they do that and brainwash enough people believe that guns are “bad” then the US will be for the taking by the progressive communists.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 11:34pmYeah. I remember the day when I figured out what Democrats were all about and how they and their rich supporters were getting richer yet I was going nowhere. In fact my life has always been MORE difficult when the Democrats are in charge. And boy, did I feel like a fool for actually believing the song and dance they were selling me to keep me in their voting herd. I mean really, they demonize the rich daily, yet the uber rich in this country from Hollywood, Wall Street, attorneys, etc. all contribute overwhelmingly to Democrats. That makes no sense if the Republican party is the party of the rich. Then they procede to heap the burden of their spending on the regular rich like small business owners and the middle class. Everytime the Dems are in power, the middle class gets smaller and the poverty class gets bigger. Today, right this minute, the poverty class is the biggest it’s been since they started measuring these things.
Republicans aren’t perfect, but from the time they took Congress in 1994 until the Dems took it in 2006, my personal income rose 382%. Now while I proudly state I did it on my own steam, without any formal education, I can say government stayed out of my way and let me do it.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 12:05amI am with you Awakenedone! Your are 100% correct in all of your points. Take a few ideas from James Wesley Rawles book “Patriots:A Novel of Survival in the coming Collapse”. National Convention needs to be called for to make some seriously needed amendments to the Constitution. 1st, and 2nd Amendments need crucial clarifications for those who have forgotten why these 2 are THE most important for We the People to remain free. We need to remove the Fed Gov from our schools, and return power back to the state levels where we know whats best for our state, not a bunch of career, fat-cat elitist in D.C. Fed Welfare, and foreign aid needs to stop, and it calls for a Constitutional Amendment to make certain that the Fed can pass no law to let these things be funded with Fed money. Fed should be capped to no more than 2% GDP. All elected officials will be compensated by their respective states. They will be held to the highest standards of his/her states wishes when Congress considers any Fed law. Repeal the 16th, and 17th, and outlaw deficit spending.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 3:00amHere’s the deal, let me be clear. I never meant for you to believe any of that crap I fed you during the election. Why, transparency? What looney tune do you take me for? We’ve funneled so much of your money, your childrens money, your grandchildrens money, their kids money to our friends that you will never be able to recover. And with the help of the fed, you’ll never figure out where it all went. Kind of like how I bought my house, only bigger.
Whoops, I wasn’t supposed to actually let you in on our little secret just now. I got confused when I said let me be clear. Won’t happen again.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 9:51amThe very first time I saw and heard Barack Obama on TV, I had the instant sense that this guy would not be good for America…
For the past century, and especially the past fifty years, Progressives have been slowly but surely chipping away at our Constitution, our founding principles and our civil liberties… Then, all of a sudden and quite magically, the well-polished Barack Obama bursts onto the political scene, rises quickly to the top (His speech in Berlin seemed to be his highest point) and becomes our 44th President…
Now the Progressives were so close to the “finish line,” they couldn’t help themselves… They got greedy and started chopping away at our Constitution and individual freedoms… No “chipping away” with this bunch… This gang rushed so fast with all of their far-left, freedom-destroying policies to finally “win” their globalist agenda, they ended up losing it…
Clearly, the Progressives have lost their message as more and more Americans become attuned to what’s really going on… Actually, Barack Obama is a blessing in disguise for his radical race to the finish line simply awakened the vast majority of the American people…
And it couldn’t have happened soon enough…

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 12:39amWhat a fool. Do you really think “Obama has let professional politicians take over the White House — and our dream of change.”? He is a politician of the most corrupt variety – Chicago style.
