Louisiana Teacher Robert Duncan Fights for Job at Boyet After Anti Obama Cartoons

Louisiana teacher Robert Duncan is fighting for his job at Boyet Junior High School after displaying his students’ pictures of President Obama in the hallway outside his classroom.  According to AOL, while the images indicated diverse political beliefs, several were deemed racist and offensive.

AOL’s Claire Gordon explains:

[Some] of the cartoons, like one depicting a bullet hole in Obama’s temple…and another implying that it was Obama hunting season, disturbed a passing parent. The parent snapped photos of the cartoons on her cellphone and sent them to the media, according to Duncan’s attorneys. Then the firestorm began.

Secret Service agents went to the homes of two of the students, reports The Times-Picayune, and questioned the children and their parents to see if they posed a real threat to the president. Duncan was placed on paid administrative leave, and on Aug 6., Superintendent Trey Folse officially ended Duncan’s 13-year career at Boyet.

Folse testified on Wednesday that Duncan was fired for “making a bad, incompetent“ decision by posting the ”violent” pictures, as well as for dishonesty.

A number of Duncan’s former co-workers have stepped in to defend him, the social studies chair Mark Selzer commenting: “I did not see the element of racism…I saw political points of view being expressed, whether pro-Obama or anti-Obama, and that’s what the lesson was designed to do.”

There is also some controversy over whether the perceived “bullet hole” in one of the photos is really what it appears.  Duncan claims it wasn’t there when he hung it up, and the student “artist” says it is the result of a dropped marker (and therefore, may have been there).

Many remain doubtful of both claims, saying the circle looks a little too large to be the result of an accidentally dropped marker.

The appeals panel is on hold as Isaac blows through the region, and can only issue a recommendation on the eighth grade teacher’s future at the school, according to the Times-Picayne.  Superintendent Trey Folse will make the final decision.

It is unclear whether the national media coverage will help or hurt his case.

Apparently Boyet Supervisor of Administration Michael Cosse admitted that, had the story not been all over the news, Duncan would likely never have been suspended in the first place.

      Uh, I dislike Obama because of his beliefs and that his is a bold faced liar. He can never tell the truth even if it would benefit him. That being said, I find it offensive just seeing the picture of Obama with the bullet hole in the head. This teacher does need to be reprimanded. These are not your ordinary anti-obama posters, these appear to be coming from a disturbed mind and he is teaching our children.

      Ben Franklin the teacher didn’t do the posters the students did……so the disturbing mind are the 8th graders doing the posters not the teacher.
      More over art is often offensive so are you saying that only art that no one finds offensive should be displayed and that all teachers who students make material anyone finds offensive should be reprimanded.

      JROOK, Bush 43 often had veiled and unveiled threats against him and the liberal media and pendants didn’t have a problem with it. Was it borderline? Maybe. But should the teacher have been the one to say this was not appropriate? If so, he would have been inject his views instead of the students.

      I’m not a supporter of President Obama.

      However, just like I thought it was in really poor taste to film a movie about a fictional assassination of George W. Bush, I think it’s in REALLY bad taste to depict a bullet hole on the side of the head of the President.

      Can you imagine if this was a poster held up at a Tea Party Rally?

      They need to send the police to S. Oklahoma asap. In our Sunday paper we had a offensive political cartoon – probably by one of these students. Now also picture this fron a Democrat paper. It mention Jo Bidens comments about the black being chainded again and under that was a picture of Biden being chainded to a real skinny Obama with elephant ears. Under this picture it said “Four More Years.”

      The bullet hole in the head pic is inappropriate. However, the Obama season one is a parody of a classic Looney Tunes cartoon:

      Bugs points to a poster with Daffy on it, and says “It’s Duck season!”
      Daffy rips off the poster, and underneath is a picture of Bugs.
      “It’s RABBIT season!” Daffy exclaims.
      “Duck season!”
      “Rabbit Season!”
      The last poster has a picture of Elmer Fudd, reading ELMER SEASON. Bugs and Daffy turn to face Elmer with a devious look on their faces (as seen in the picture above). Elmer sweats bullets, makes a weak smile, then runs off.
      Bugs and Daffy dress as hunters, then break the fourth wall with,
      “Shhhh! Be vewwy, vewwy quiet! We’re hunting Ewmers!”

      Honestly, has this malcontent woman never seen that episode?

      We say the teachers aren’t doing enough to teach critical thinking, compare and contrast thinking, etc., etc., etc. Look what happens when one tries to do it! Teachers can’t win. Why did the parent immediately send the pix to the media instead of going to the teacher? Maybe the parent was a liberal? Knowing middle school students (I’m a retired teacher), I can imagine that a student added the “bullet hole” after the pic was already up. The teacher would not have put it up that way. Have a little faith in teachers. They’re battling enough opponents as it is.

    I believe in freedom of expression and speech.

    But I know I would be dang sure to get a visit from the Secret Service and/or the FBI if I posted a poster with Obama, or even Romney or any other candidate, with a bullet hole in his head and a cartoon that seems to declare them open season.

    The other posters I’ve seen are typical political hyperbole…IMO

    This administration is so paranoid that if you are stupid enough to publish in any way something derogatory about them, they will pay you a visit & you may lose your job. Haven’t they demonstrated this repeatedly… The First Amendment has been suspended at the very least & don’t you all get that yet? Have any of you read about the days when the mobsters & gangsters were running things because this is the way it gets when criminals are in charge. Even the press is getting their news okayed by the WH before they publish anything public. Even professional political cartoonists are at risk… So much for freedom of speech. GW Bush got it. His dad got it. Reagan got it. This guy doesn’t get it. That’s because he is a criminal & he is trying to hide his criminal activities. And he is the biggest detriment to ever hit this country before now. Even FDR was sweet compared to this clown. If racism & the destruction of everything we held dear is more to your liking, then by all means run with the present status quo. If not, then exercise your soon-to-be non-existent rights & vote the present administration out.

      My thoughts exact how dare a teach allow a students to express themselves and practice their God given first amendment rights. Of course the liberals rallied the troops and did the Lisa Jackson (head of the EPA) Crusifier to scare any other teachers thinking about allowing their students to think for themselves and express themslevs from every trying.

    So it is perfectly acceptable for the public school system to teach Marxism and overthrow of the US Government, but political cartoons are not? The one with the bullet hole was very inappropriate, but unless there is proof that the teacher was aware that it was there, then losing his job over it is absolutely unacceptable. I will make my opinion known to the school. The original story I heard was that another student “added” the bullet hole to the artwork once it was on the wall. It should have been removed immediately.

    Did these people ever *see* the political cartoons run by every *newspaper* in the country when George Bush was President? The most hateful, biased, lying images drawn by paid artists were published every single day in every state in the Union…I never heard a single comment from CNN about those…

    Apparently, though, actual students are not to be allowed the same freedom of speech. Apparently any student that strays off the socialist NEA plantation is to be rounded up, threatened by the secret service and hopefully then will be either cleansed or at least too afraid to air their views on our socialist dictator.

    Just wait until Obama is re elected – then they’ll be able to jail these students and move into your house to make sure you never say anything against the beloved leader.

    If school officials put all their faith and future in the hands of that character, they are doomed. Had a conservative president the subject of the drawings, these would had ended up hanging on the school walls, like art, instead of being considered threats.
