Lowe’s Issues Pseudo-Apology After Pulling Ads From TLC’s Muslim Show

National hardware retailer Lowe's has pulled its advertisements from the TLC show "All-American Muslim." (Image source: TLC)
Earlier this weekend, we reported on the decision by Lowe’s to pull its ads from the TLC show “All American Muslim:”
“While we continue to advertise on various cable networks, including TLC, there are certain programs that do not meet Lowe’s advertising guidelines, including the show you brought to our attention. Lowe’s will no longer be advertising on that program,” the Lowe’s representative said.
However, since announcing that they would be pulling their ads from the TLC show, Lowe’s has been met with a flurry of heated criticism.
The company has issued a statement stating that it is sorry that its ad-pulling decision “managed to make some people very unhappy.”

“Some people” includes a California state senator (who‘s exploring whether Lowe’s decision violated any laws), Def Jam founder/Foundation for Ethnic Understanding chairman Russell Simmons, and millions of Americans, reports Gawker.
“Lowe’s community manager has probably been chugging aspirin-infused milkshakes all weekend considering the thousands of critical comments people have posted to the company’s Facebook,” the Gawker report continues, “Though given the radio silence on the company’s Twitter feed, maybe that person quit their job altogether.”
As mentioned in the Gawker article, a state senator from Southern California said Sunday that he was considering calling for a boycott.
Calling the Lowe’s decision “un-American“ and ”naked religious bigotry,” Sen. Ted Lieu (D-CA) told The Associated Press he would also consider legislative action if Lowe‘s doesn’t apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads. The senator sent a letter outlining his complaints to Lowe’s Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Niblock.
“The show is about what it’s like to be a Muslim in America, and it touches on the discrimination they sometimes face. And that kind of discrimination is exactly what‘s happening here with Lowe’s,” Lieu said.

Although Lowe’s issued an apology, Lieu said it doesn’t go far enough.
“We want to raise awareness so that consumers will know during this holiday shopping season that Lowe’s is engaging in religious discrimination,” he said.
Besides an apology and reinstatement of the ads, Lieu said he hoped Lowe’s would make an outreach to the community about bias and bigotry.
Lieu’s office said a decision was expected Wednesday or Thursday on whether to proceed with the boycott.
Lowe‘s said company officials are trying to arrange to talk directly to Lieu about his concerns and clarify the company’s position.
Suehaila Amen, whose family is featured on “All-American Muslim,” said she was disappointed by the Lowe’s decision.
“I’m saddened that any place of business would succumb to bigots and people trying to perpetuate their negative views on an entire community,” Amen, 32, told The Detroit News on Sunday.
Dawud Walid, Michigan director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said his group felt “extreme disappointment” at Lowe’s “capitulation to bigotry.”
Walid said he has heard expressions of anger and calls for a boycott by Muslims but said a key to resolving the Lowe’s advertising controversy will be how non-Muslim religious leaders and others react to Lowe’s decision.
“I will be picking up the phone tomorrow to some of our friends and allies to explain the situation to them,” Walid said Sunday.
Given the nature of the show and its subject material, and Lowe’s decision to pull its ads, can anyone really say they’re surprised by the subsequent backlash?

Posted on December 12, 2011 at 5:45pm[Shrug] Lowe’s can advertise (spend their money) however they wish. It’s a free country (or it’s supposed to be, anyway). If they chose not to advertise during a show promoting Jewish culture, that’s also their choice. A certain, well known figure recently said, “Let’s not jump to any conclusions.” People choose to get offended by all sorts of things, but it’s still a choice. If you’re offended, by all means vote with your feet by shopping elsewhere. In most places Lowe‘s isn’t the only game in town. If they decided to promote something I didn’t agree with, I’d write them a letter and shop elsewhere, but I wouldn’t feel entitled to force them to spend their money in a certain way.

All they really had to do was just cancel the ads, with NO reason. We just don’t need to advertise at this time… why do they need to even give a reason. You know other ethnic groups always put’s their race on the line, Black Entertainment Network (BET), American Muslims, For Colored Girls, Black Panthers, etc… But yet if white people were to create White Entertainment Network, White Americans, For White Girls ONly, White Tigers, etc… ACLU would have a seizure trying to figure out who to sue first, all the race baiters out there like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be on every street corner calling the White Devils out!!! Either you are totally uninformed as to the alarming influx of muslim immigrants into our country, and the agenda ISLAM has for the world, or you are a large part of that problem. Which is it? There are millions of American’s who are aware of what ISLAM stands for, but you do not, or you do. Again, which is it? It‘s time for all American’s to take a stand! This is OUT OF CONTROL. Companies are free to decide where and when to spend their advertising dollars. I mean, no one called for legal action when advertisers pulled their support for Glenn Beck’s Fox program did they?

Lowe‘s couldn’t have been the only advertiser. What/who were the other advertisers? Are they taking heat like Lowe’s? Lowe’s has a right to advertise on any show. It’s risky business. I‘ll shop at Lowe’s and would have anyway. Ya’ll have the choice to watch or not to watch. Probably a more effective way of boycotting.

There are two issues here: a First Amendment right to free speech (or lack thereof) & the expected economic fallout of making this particular financial decision.
A: A company has a right to advertise when it wants, where it wants, to whom it wants, and no decision to pull advertising is illegal, regardless of the reason.
B: Face it: it’s extremely likely that more people shop at Lowes in the Bible Belt than there are Muslims in America altogether. The numbers speak for themselves.
Lowe’s made the decision that the potential for losing the business of a portion of the religious majority outweighed the business lost by a religious hyper-minority that even a very small portion of the majority outnumbers.
Is it religious bigotry? No. It’s a business decision based upon the predictable results of their business decisions. This begs the next question: Is it religious bigotry in the masses, particularly in the bible belt, that brought about this move? You could argue that, I guess, but that would also mean that the Buy Black campaign is a racial bigotry movement…

Mr Simmons has a debt card business that makes money from every US citizen, but let another company not sponsor a show and he protests. Muslims are good people like any other religious group. However demographic studies show that there are not many Muslim contractors or other many do it yourself Muslims shopping at Lowes or Home Depot for that matter…just sayin Russell Dawg Simmons

I then added that their decision to pull the advertising (that part was an unstated, yet understood, part of my last sentence) was one more reason to shop there. Here in America, everyone regardless of faith should understand that all faiths are free to be practiced. Many Americans who are Muslim understand this and don’t wish to impose themselves on others.
