Loyalty: After 5 Months Dog Still Waits for Dead Master

Loyalty: After 5 Months Dog Still Waits for Dead Master

Wayne Giroux’s family sure misses him after he was killed by a drunk driver this summer. But there’s also someone else who misses Wayne — his dog Spot.

From WFAA-TV:

It’s hard to tell who misses Wayne more… Paul or the dog.

At the same time, every day, Spot hangs around this quiet country road waiting for Wayne to come home.

“I have no doubt that‘s what she’s waiting for,” Paul said. “It breaks my heart every time I go over there.”

Twice a day, Spot leaves her post when Paul looks in on her. But he knows it’s not him the dog really wants to see.

“If you can ever find anything that loves you that much, it’s the most precious gift in the world,” he said.

It’s possible, one day, Spot might give up. But Paul doesn’t think so.

Around here, friends are for a lifetime.

Just over a yr. ago we lost our beloved Holly. She passed away in her sleep. Her son, Buddy Love, who looks almost identical to Spot, was heart broken. We had her covered in a blanket…Buddy threw off the blanket and started to lick (kiss) and lick her, whining and crying. At first I was shocked, then I realized it was his time to mourn, his way. After about 15 minutes, he walked away. 3 months later we bought a 3 month old puppy, and he adores her.

I‘ve always said a dog’s love is unconditional and as close to the love of God that you can get. That’s why it is so important to adopt and/or foster older dogs whose owners are no longer able to care for them and they end up in shelters. These animals are lost and in need of serious love the kind of love that they give every day.

Amen to that ….. we have rescued and rehomed MANY (over 100) older dogs that fall through the cracks of life ….(divorce, death, allergies are the excuses) I don‘t even listen to people’s excuses anymore …. I just look in their eyes and know what to do … I know some people say that I rescue and rehabilitate dogs to find their new homes … because I couldn’t rescue Leslie …. well maybe that’s true … BUT before Leslies’ death … I was in the business world and I had NO idea that I had been given the gift of helping God’s creatures …. !!!

I had a dog like that, I just put her down a couple of months ago, she was old and had a serious heart problem. I left her with a friend for a month last year to go to AZ for a job. She never gave up waiting for me to come home to pick her up. She wanted to go everywhere even if she had to stay in the car for hours. She never complained or acted up and was always happy to see me even if it had been five minutes. You can read more about her on her very own page on my website, http://www.josephfawcettart.com , I think it is the second page on the list, I miss her still so much. Freckles was her name.

This is not uncommon. Over four years ago my first wife passed away from a 35 month battle with cancer. One of our Boston terrier’s, Cookie, demeanor drastically changed. I could tell she missed her master. She actually appeared depressed. She no longer played with her mate, Oreo. Sadly, Cookie passed away from a brain tumor 11 months after my first wife.

I began in Collies when my daughter, Leslie saw “Lassie, Come Hone” … we were building a house in the country and Leslie in her 4 yr. old logic decided that a Collie/Sheltie would be a good dog for living in the country … “Just in case she got lost” …. the dog would help her find her way home … That was 1986 … we put a deposit on a Collie pup that was due to be born in December 1986 .. November 22, 1986, an horrific auto accident (old woman fell asleep at the wheel and plowed through our windshield) took my daughter’s life … I was helicoptered to a Philadelphia Hospital … my family was told that I was not expected to live … and IF I did live .. that I would loose my left arm and possibly my leg …. The deposit on the Collie was offered back to us because I was not in any condition to raise a puppy …. I said “NO … that puppy who was born on Christmas Morning was my daughter’s puppy … and she is coming home with me … we named her Samantha” …. That dog saved my life … she gave me a reason to get out of bed once I could walk … she listened to my stories of Leslie my daughter, without EVER telling me to “just get on with life” … as some people did … she licked away my tears … The nurses that were at my home for the first months after the hospital were all interviewed about …. Did they like/love dogs … If they didn’t … they were NOT hired … Samantha turned out to be my first Obedience Champion … she helped me walk again … she had endless patience …. She was the beginning of my life with dogs … I have been active in obedience, conformation as well as Rescue …. Samantha is gone now … with her master in Heaven, my daughter Leslie, who would be 27 years old now … and there have been many doggies at our home since her death …. when they pass …. I send them, in prayer, along to Leslie …. My mother, Leslie’s Grandmom, who has also passed on (1987) was not a huge fan of more then one dog … so I laugh when I think of all the doggies, horses, kitties that have passed on during my life out in the country … and I have sent their spirits to Leslie …. and I can just see ‘the look’ on my Mom’s face … lol ….
Bottom line …. Just spell D O G backwards ….. G O D …. I think that God sent us these creatures to teach us …. of Love … pure and simple!!! You can see some of our doggies on http://www.mysticgrove.org God Bless Spot the Dog!!!

Right in front of me is my dear Josephine s photo. She left us in 2008 after 19 years. She is still so missed. In her last days she could not get up from her bed.
I gave her a dish of water and left the room while she finished it. When I returned she had flipped the empty stainless bowl to her head and was grinning at me from under her ‘hat’. Thank the Lord for digital cameras, I got a photo for my husband to see.
Dogs are the greatest. They never ask for the keys to the car, or for expensive toys and always try to cheer you up when you are down.

Dogs have such keen senses, I think we should take a pet to the funeral home and let them give a kiss goodbye, if possible. They will understand that better than the just the stark absence. If the dog is family, that is the least we could do.

Animals are such a wonderful addition to anyone’s family. How blessed I am with the unconditional love that my babies give me.

I had a cat, Habibi, who was so attached to me that my ex-husband used to say that if something ever happened to me and I passed away before Habibi, he would just place my cat in the casket with me because he could never live without me. He was correct. Unfortunately, I had to lay rest my sweet boy in July and I miss him daily.

My heart breaks for sweet, sweet, Spot.

    RAINBOW BRIDGE

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears ***** forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

    For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

This is a very nice thought and I appreciate you posting it. I have read it before and was given it just after putting my last dog down, a couple of months ago. I have to point out as a true believer in Christ that we are not promised to ever see our dear beloved pets again in eternity. I sincerely hope it is possible, and I trust Christ enough to know that if we can’t then everything will still be ok for us and them. I know God used Freckles and my other dogs in my life and I am eternally grateful to God for the gift of thier lives bound with mine. Beyond that as a Believer I have to just trust God for the rest.

      Thanks again,

I had two Shelties who would run outside each day when I went to work and watch me leave. They would also greet me when I came home in the evening by meeting me at the fence in the same spot.

I had a house guest for a few months who told me something that shocked me. He said that each day, when I left, my two puppies would sit outside, watching through the fence the ENTIRE DAY until I came back in the evening. I thought that they would go back into the house for the duration of the day, only going back outside to watch for me at the hour of my return, Instead, they waiting outside ALL DAY LONG! There are lessons of loyalty for us in these canine friends!

Enter our Border Collie, Sadie. Today she made me laugh so hard that I doubled over on the ground in hysterics – just has she has every day for the past ten years! To me, the joy a dog can bring is immeasurable and although I really love all dogs, especially hounds and herders, I am now and forever a Border Collie Feeder. Good luck with the newbie Divine, and Sbenard, I hope you find a new four legged love in your life in the future. I always get a mutt from the pound. I don’t think breed matters too much, most dogs, if given a chance to be part of the family and not just something in the backyard to throw food at, will love openly and honestly and never leave thier owners’ side. I have to laugh at what your wife says … because my first husband used to say the same thing to me … ummmm … that’s why … he never asked that question too often … We parted our ways 14 years after our only child (Leslie) passed on …. and I was OK with living by myself with my doggies … that’s when my second husband (younger) showed up … I was part of a transport team for several litters of kittens … I met the transport person (now my husband of 8 years) and the rest, as they say … is history … Our dogs are our lives …. I’ve always considered that a subtle form of animal cruelty. Domestic animals need love as well, and if you can’t give your pet(s) SOME affection, your psyche is warped.

It is somewhat off topic, but here’s how Islam views dogs, thanks to Muhammad:

“Maimuna reported that one morning Allah’s Messenger was silent with grief. Maimuna said: Allah’s Messenger, I find a change in your mood today. Allah’s Messenger said: Gabriel had promised me that he would meet me tonight, but he did not meet me. By Allah, he never broke his promises, and Allah’s Messenger spent the day in this sad mood. Then it occurred to him that there had been a puppy under their cot. He commanded and it was turned out. He then took some water in his hand and sprinkled it at that place. When it was evening Gabriel met him and he said to him: You promised me that you would meet me the previous night. He said: Yes, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture. Then on that very morning he commanded the killing of the dogs until he announced that the dog kept for the orchards should also be killed, but he spared the dog meant for the protection of extensive fields or big gardens.” (Muslim #5248)

These people are taught to hate all of God’s creatures except themselves.

The first thing I bought after I moved into a new house was a dog door so my doggies don’t have to ask to be let in and out, they come and go as they please. I have a beautiful fenced yard with green grass for them, I love dogs. I hope you didn’t think I meant that dogs belong in the yard all the time, I also think it is cruel to leave them out. They are pack animals and it hurts them deeply to be separated from thier pack (family).

Greyfriars Bobby was a dog in Scotland who spent 14 years guarding his master‘s grave until the dog’s own death. He only left to get food and water and the city took over renewing his licence so he wouldn’t have to be destroyed. As soon as the vet came out to the waiting room I knew it was bad news. He had congestive heart failure and they had to put him down. We were all devestated.

Also, I have two 15 year old dogs myself that I have had since they were both puppies, and I know they will not be around too much longer. They absolutely love me unconditionally, and it will be very tough when it is their time to go. They truly are man’s best friend.

One had cancer and the other one had stopped eating and was trying to die and just kept lingering on in the back yard so I finally had to take her in, she was fifteen and wouldn’t eat or come in the house anymore. I will always keep dogs even though the pain of losing them is so great, the joy and unconditional love they bring into the home is to be cherished.
