M.I.A. Obscene Hand Gesture Caught on Tape During Super Bowl Halftime Show

M.I.A. Gives the Finger During Super Bowl Halftime

After Janet Jackson’s 2004 “Wardrobe malfunction,” the NFL drew the ire of the FCC and Americans disgusted by the show’s disregard for the broad audience of the Super Bowl, including families and other viewers who would find Jackson and Timberlake’s behavior inappropriate. The NFL publicly denounced the show’s climax and producers; MTV. To avoid the same problem, subsequent Super Bowl halftime shows featured older rock performers like Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. This year the show returned to pop diva performers.

Looks like we can expect another seven years of old rock stars.

(Related: New York Giants win the Super Bowl)

While the show’s main performer, Madonna, remained tame, singer M.I.A. made her presence known, flipping the bird to the camera and millions of viewers at home:

You can also see the obscene hand gesture at about the (0:09) mark below:

The NFL and NBC wasted little time in responding.

“The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans,” said Brian McCarthy, spokesman for the NFL, which produced Madonna’s halftime show.

The risque moment came during the biggest TV event of the year. The screen briefly went blurred after M.I.A.’s gesture in what was a late attempt – by less than a second – to cut out the camera shot.

“The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show,” NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said. “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”

When you have no talent you have to resort to gimmicks. Look..I’m all for “dangerousness” in Rock and Roll but you have to be aware of the venue. A rock crowd at a show will lap up the swearing and the bravado, but a TV audience watching a sporting event? Not so much. I call this the “hissy fit” generation. A bunch of teenaged and college aged gits hissing and spitting and blowing their tops at anything and everything, just for the sake of it. Look at the movie Chronicle for instance…college nerds having a hissy fit.

Little did I know that some ugly ex-convict (those are prison tattoos, right?) with a mud-fence face and no talent would be given the opportunity to tell us how she has the same opinion of America as our first lady! MIA = a name that tells where her brain went.

Well, I am glad that I saw this on be Blaze because I have no doubt that the NFL will get all video of this pulled.

Interestingly enough, my wife watched the show and didn’t catch this – but she was critical of the NFL for always booking some older entertainer and not one that’s more upbeat and contemporary. So this profane little attempt at relevance was lost on her.

Mixing of races? Really? Moses married an Ethiopian when he was younger (read Josephus for more details about that; the Bible says very little about it). When Miriam and Aaron complained about his “mixing of races” God gave Miriam leprosy (that part is in the Bible). Miriam was healed, but evidently, God didn’t really care for his complaining about it.

MTV did do an awful lot of things for our society. I would agree with that. Promoting promiscuity, drug abuse, violence, and just about everything else that the Bible is against. There‘s enough real filth on MTV to complain about that we don’t need to start inventing imaginary “sins” like mixing of races.

More to the point though..as has been said earlier, the solution is simple, you tell MTV or whoever the acts are promoted through that if their performer intentionally breaches standards and rules, MTV will not get paid. Easy…money is the only thing that will end this buffoonery from these kinds of idiots who believe a family watched television broadcast is the right venue to show off your vulgarities.

I absolutely agree with RangerP. Our culture has been greatly influenced by the arts and behavior of the elites, Entertainment business and Hollywood. IMHO, they know what they’re doing. The decline we see today in our society is what they desire: no sound education, sense of morality, true knowledge, decent behavior or respect towards others, just do as thou will.

Saying “mixing of the races” is not racist. Racism means you blindly and without reason hate and abhor another man solely based on the color of his skin. This hatred is precluded by some bigoted, ignorant or prejudice thought or belief that greatly and unjustly overgeneralizes one group of people based on their race or skin color, thus affecting everyone in that group. Racism also means that you believe your race is superior than another, and for that reason, you believe you must rule over them, oppress them, or unjustly govern them. The liberal interpretation of racism today has greatly distorted its true meaning. Anything even remotely racial or mentioning race that might be offensive or contrary to another belief is quickly and ignorantly labeled racist. These liberals who think they are superior because they believe they have achieved some kind of higher knowledge, wiser conscience or blessing from some authority sanctioning their belief as true are the real ignorant, bigoted and prejudice folks who don’t know jack squat, believing they are right and know what’s best for everyone else.

      @Colt

“Saying “mixing of the races” is not racist. Racism means you blindly and without reason hate and abhor another man solely based on the color of his skin.”

      Not quite.
      “rac·ism   [rey-siz-uhm]
      1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
      2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
      3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.”

Allow me to explain why this phrase is racist, and feel free to refute it. “Mixing of races” can mean two things:
      1. Associating with other races. If this leads to the downfall of society, as Rangerp suggests, then the only solution is either segregation or banishment of unwanted races. Segregation, of course, makes unequal conditions based on race and elevates some races above other. It doesn’t have to be “hatred,” but it definitely holds certain people as superior based solely on their skin color.
      (cont below)

    • Locked
      Posted on February 6, 2012 at 4:40pm

      (cont)

      2. Interracial marriage and/or reproduction. If mixed race children or interracial couples lead to the downfall of society, as Rangerp may suggest, then the solution is making interracial marriage illegal, and to confer a secondary citizen status to their children. Their very existence weakens our country if this is his belief, so something must be done. Obviously, again, this means that certain races are superior than others. There is no other metric in this considered other than race.

Thus, it’s obvious that saying “mixing of races” leads to the downfall of America is racist. Now, if something like “government-forced diversity programs“ or ”affirmative action creating inequality” had been said, maybe there would be an argument that doesn’t cater to racism. But saying mixing together different races, either through association or reproduction, leads to the downfall of America… that’s 100% racism.

@encinom I’m against Government sanctioned segregation or Government run racism. “Mixing of races” is not racist. That’s your opinion and belief, and it’s not fact or absolute truth. Forcing your belief on others, and dismissing what their beliefs are is bigoted. Thinking you know what’s best for someone else is ignorant.

There sure is a lot of hate here towards an artist that most of you admit you know nothing about.

First of all, MIA is an incredibly talented artist. Not having heard of her doesn’t take that away.

Secondly, flipping the bird is probably the mildest “obscene gesture” I can think of.

Finally, considering the views of most people here, there are better reasons to not like MIA. She has openly and routinely supported a Sri Lankan terrorist group in the past, so you could start there if you want to pass judgement. @Locked I was right on.

It’s the liberal reading of those definitions that are the problem. Labeling anything that might be racial or might mention race as racist is ignorant. Granted, some statements or beliefs might be racial, but they sure as heck aren’t racist.

“usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.”
Exactly what I said. “must rule over them”

Exactly what I said. “oppress, unjustly govern”

“hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.”
Exactly what I said. “blind hatred, without reason, bigoted”

Segregation as practiced in the 1900′s was Government instituted, permitted and controlled. I’m against all Government sanctioned segregation or Government run racism. However, the Government can‘t pass a law that mandates that a man may not marry a white women if his reason is because he won’t marry a black women. No matter what you or I believe, that’s his right. The problem starts when Government fiercely starts interfering in social and personal matters. That’s how public segregation started. The only way I see interracial marriage as being some kind of “downfall” would be, as the Bible says, if another people, culture or nation absolutely abhors and detests the truth or knowledge of God, and thus corrupts, distorts, and destroys an otherwise godly or, in our case, Christian so

@Locked Do not take my above post as meaning anything else. Unlike liberals, I don’t believe the Government should, can or must enforce what I believe. I believe these are personal and social matters best handled by free individuals, not Governments. This provides the best freedom and liberty for individuals to make the choice they believe is best for themselves or family, and peacefully allows for those individuals differing in beliefs to continue their own way. I just don’t like it when the Government dictates our lives. As regarding RangerP’s statements, you and Encinom quickly jumped to the close minded or prejudice conclusion that RangerP meant public or Government segregation, and were terrified by Jim Crow and who knows what other boggy man. IMHO, the public schools, MSM, and pervasive liberal culture has done enough to indoctrinate, brainwash and influence the minds of people to think a certain way just by the mention of one word or phrase. This quickly blocks all attempts of discussion and reasonable debate. As most have their preconceived notions engraved into their minds as absolute truth. Which is why I’m also against our public schools being greatly influenced or fiercely dictated upon by the federal Government (Judicial, Legislative, and Executive branches).

      @COlt,

You are dancing around the issue. RangerP used a term, without further explanation, that has a racist meaning. Nor does racist mean that the government has to be invovled as you put it, “Segregation as practiced in the 1900′s was Government instituted, permitted and controlled.” Segregation was and is a part of Southern culture. The Government only enforced the norms of the culture. It was not as if after the Civil War tthe government said okay I can see only you Whtes and Blacks play along nicely, I need to put a stop to it. The Jim Crow laws came from the need of the Southern Whte Man to continue to hold power over others, using Government as a tool for that goal. RangerP has proved himself a bigot and a racist, he is opposed to any advancments made in US society and a return to the Leave it to Beaver myth of America. From his objections to equal right for homosexuals to his use of blatently racist terms he is a disgrace to the uniform he claims to wear.

@en You said, “RangerP used a term, without further explanation, that has a racist meaning.”

The way in which you say that proves my point. You went ahead and publicly concluded a whole bunch of things without knowing anything. No, you did more. You labeled and categorized him as something which you had nothing to back up with. That is prejudice and close minded. Like I said before, you folks have your preconceived notions engraved into you minds, and anyone differing, even by mentioning or stating one word or phrase, is absolutely wrong, false, lying and a whole bunch of other things conceived by assuming.

You said, “Nor does racist mean that the government has to be invovled as you put it.” That’s not what I said. I’m against racism. I disagree with your conclusion that RangerP hates others solely based on the color of their skin. You’re statement is ignorant and bigoted. There are various reasons why some do not favor interracial marriage. Granted, some folks may truly be racist, but others see it as a personal or social matter that has nothing to do with racial hatred or superiority. Some of these decisions are based on racial differences with respect to culture, traditions, ethnicity, heritage and customs, not skin color. And having beliefs or opinions on race or racial matters doesn‘t and shouldn’t automatically label one racist. I find the comments made by you to be more ignorant and intolerant of other people, than anything RangerP has said.

So either RangerP is a bigot or he is a racist. Either way his views represent and belong back in a disgraceful period of American history.

He makes a loaded statement, a statement that has a racist history, I am judging him based on his comments. He is making irrational judgements solely based on either race or his bigoted views of the various cultures and creeds. The man is a disgrace to his uniform and if he is not lying undeserving of his senior rank.

@en Your use of the word racist and bigot is very liberal. In today’s liberal world the sense or meaning of bigotry is very vague and broad.

Here’s an actual definition: bigot – A person who is obstinately and unreasonably wedded to a particular religious creed, opinion, practice or ritual. Obstinately – firmly or stubbornly adhering to one’s purpose, opinion, etc.; not yielding to argument, persuasion or entreaty.

There was no hatred in RangerP’s comment. You cannot say you judge him on his comments, then say his comment is loaded with a racist history, and base your judgement on something not personally related to him. Either you’ll judge the man by what he believes, what he says, and how he acts, or you should leave the judging or critique for some historical discourse or college history course. Bigotry implies an unsound, ignorant and blind attitude or behavior towards another belief or opinion without reason, relevant purpose, or respect for the differences confronted, or fiercely attached to one’s own, e.g. close minded. I reject Satanism. I have my reasons and established opinions based on sound research and lots of information on why I reject the Church of Satan. That’s not bigotry. Now, if I were to hate, detest and avoid all people that speak Italian for no reason, or for illogically thinking that they will do harm to me, that’s bigoted, ignorant and stupid. Today’s culture is so liberal, that I guess, the definition of words are thus also.

“mixing of the races” – let me pontificate

I do not believe Biblically that mixing races is necessarily a sin. I think you will find in the bible where Israel ran into problems when they mixed with the heathen around them,

Let me be specific as to what I meant by MTV promoting “mixing of the races”. MTV was not looking to have hispanics marry asians. If you watch MTV (especially their reality shows) they without a doubt have pushed in the direction of having young white girls lay up with thugish black dudes. there is a reason for them wanting this behavior. It promotes more welfare, thus promoting more on the system, thus promoting more to vote democrat. remember, MTV got started almost thirty years ago . They had a plan then, and it is working. When I walk through the Walmart in Phenix City, Alabama and see countless young white girls with no ring on their finger, and pusing around the offspring of Tyrone, MTV got what they wanted. Most who are half black are more likely to see themselves as black, thus more people voting democrat.\\

Once again, had their never been an MTV, we would not have a president Obama. He sort of fits my talking points if you know what i mean

I agree … and how about some majorettes with fire batons .. now that’s a show! (my high school days!) Actually we also performed at a Lions half time on Thanksgiving (no fire however could have used it .. open stadium and FREEZING!)

I missed it, but that was on purpose. When the half time show started I muted the TV took the time to watch a couple of videos on my favorite hobby site. Wait, I stand corrected, actually I didn’t miss it.

Carol Burnett used to tug her ear at end of show to say hello to or acknowledge family, perhaps that is all this dirtbag was doing tonight, that is just her way of acknowledging her family.

Maybe the camera should have panned down to Madonna’s knees a little more often.

First, blame the person who booked this disgusting act.
Second, blame the person on the live broadcast delay switch, for not censoring it.
Why does it seem like the censor people are always asleep at the switch?

Who the heck is MIA? But now I guess everyone in America will know. The NFL should be able to put into the contract, “If you violate any obscenity rules during your performance, you will be fined $10 Million and will pay all FCC Fines”. That would stop this crap. Maybe the FCC should go ahead and levy the Jail penalty on this one. Seemed rather blatant.

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.” And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.” …
