You’ve brought the family to the State Fair and after a long day of bouncing from booth to booth in the hot sun, there is nothing like a freshly-grilled Maggot Sandwich to refuel your system and silence hunger pangs.
The Maggot Sandwich is not something served to castaways on “Survivor.“ The combination of grilled maggots on a bun are the invention of food cart owner ”Jungle“ George Sandefur of ”Jungle George’s Exotic Meats & Bugs.”
This past weekend, George brought his culinary delights to Pueblo, Colorado. The Associated Press was on the scene to cover the story AND sample the freshly grilled treats.
Maggots… Yum yum, give me some!

Report Post »KickinBack
Posted on September 6, 2011 at 5:27pmGross, only because culturally we don’t normally eat them. (and associate maggots with smelly trash and road kills) But I hear they are tasty and high in nutrition.

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 1:47pmStrictly speaking these are NOT maggots. These are beetle larvae. My dad used to raise these for fish bait. (They work great by the way.)
Report Post »you can find these in novelty candy lolipops. Baked or deep fried these make an excellent source of protein, and they are grown under very clean conditions.
We used to breed them in corn meal.
I have eaten them before in the chocolate covered form, and they are not bad. Crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside! YUM!!!

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 2:34pmAbsolutly correct on being larvae! Maggots are fly larvae! Pretty good fried. A whole heck of a lot tastier than dry dog food! In a past life I was an entomologist!

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 3:19pmFlies are almost 100% protein. When I was in the survival portion of flight school in the Army, a survival instructor stood before us holding a pound of flies and a pound of steak in the other hand. He instructed us that if we had these two items, to throw the steak away and eat the flies because they contain more protein. I immediately raised my hand and asked if we had these two things, could we eat the steak also instead of throwing it away. I ended up doing push-ups! Insects could become the healthy food of the future.

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 1:27pmOh please, this isn’t even remotely the same. You make yourself look really dumb by trying to equate the two. Raw milk poses a very real threat to people’s health. Maggots may seem gross, but assuming that they are cleaned and cooked there is nothing to worry about.
Raw maggots, on the other hand, would be a completely different story. If THAT is what he was serving, then your comparison would be valid, as you would be comparing one uncooked, pathogen-carrying product to another.
Sheesh….

Report Post »The Feds tell us that milk is bad, beef is bad, hay to feed the beef is bad, pork is bad, grow crops for transportation fuel instead of food, unreasonable restrictions on food producers like farmers that forces some out of business.

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 2:43pm@Rational Man
There is no irony here. The USDA says that LOTS of stuff is bad for you. It doesn’t make the stuff illegal. All it means when something is USDA-Approved is that it’s not going to a) outright slay you, b) pose a high risk of giving you a disease. Eating grilled maggots poses neither of those risks.
Honestly, insects are extremely nutritious. They just get a bad rap because they are ugly. But seriously here, they aren’t any grosser than a cow or a pig that spends its whole life walking around in (and eating food contaminated by) its own excrement; or a chicken that EATS its own excrement.
Again, raw milk:grilled fly larvae = Apples:Oranges
Report Post »Doctor Nordo
Posted on September 6, 2011 at 2:57pmMixed up FDA and USDA, but the fact still remains that there is nothing wrong with eating bugs. They are healthy, high protein, and low fat. They‘re like nature’s cookies!

We had milk with everything. Ever put milk in your chilli?

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 12:41pmEarthworms aren’t bad either and taste like meat when cooked. I tried it on a whim when squirrel hunting with some friends while a teenager. We almost always cooked up some of the squirrels over a fire while hunting and I happened to find some earthworms in the soil around the firepit we always used. I figured wth it couldn’t hurt to try it. I was pleasantly surprised and if the times get desperate enough I know I can scrounge some up if necessary. I might have trouble getting the wife and kids to accept it though.

I’m not the one pushing people to eat insects. Who runs the USDA (an un-Constitutional federal bureaucracy btw)? If you don’t think there are people at the department of Agriculture that would love nothing more than to ban red meat, think again. NONE of our freedoms are safe as long as the left holds political power.
I wish everything didn‘t have to be political but that’s just the world we live in today…..

Report Post »trolltrainer
Posted on September 6, 2011 at 2:34pmIt is USDA approved…meaning it can be served to the paying public…It has nothing to do with the government pushing anyone to eat anything…It is the government approving the food as safe. I am not supporting the USDA, that is another argument, but you people should be thankful the USDA recognizes maggots a food. If some bug entrepreneur wanted to sell maggot burgers but the USDA did not approve it and would not let him THEN you would have a reason to get your panties in a wad…

In what crazy world should I ever be glad that the federal government recognizes that maggots are safe to eat?? Aside from the fact that the federal government has NO Constitutional authority to set up a bureaucracy to tell me what is and isn’t safe to eat – IOW my tax dollars are being wrongly taken from me to fund them (it should fall to the States) – I‘m perfectly capable of deciding what is and isn’t save for me to eat.
BTW, did you know that the federal government has been arresting people for selling milk without (gasp!) the government’s permission? I think that’s something people should be getting their panties wadded up over…..

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 9:11amJkendel,
You are just looking for an argument. You will not get it. I do not deny what you say, I even said as much myself. But you are creating an argument here where none exists. This story was not meant to be political, the USDA actually did the right thing for once. Never mind if the agency is needed or not, we are not arguing that.
I know people will be people, but the types of responses we get on this site dishearten me. No wonder the left can so easily make us out to be total fruitcakes…Most are…There is no rational argument with irrational people. Do you want to change things? Do you want to be part of the solution? Then quit being part of the problem! You are simply the opposite side of the same irrational, loony coin.

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 1:00pm@ Alanstigg — I understand not eating a pet (not only my pet, but anyone’s pet), but secular taboos are enforced by fiat and the delineation is made according to species, not according to an individual animal’s having been a “pet” during its lifetime. Some people have pet goats, pet llama’s, pet rabbits, etc. — but the law does not proscribe their consumption by humans.
