Deadly 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes New Zealand

New Zealand (AP) – A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the southern New Zealand city of Christchurch on Tuesday, seriously injuring people and damaging buildings throughout the city.
Live video footage showed parts of buildings collapsed into the streets, which were strewn with bricks and shattered concrete. Sidewalks and roads were cracked and split, and hundreds of dazed, screaming and crying residents wandered through the streets as sirens blared throughout the city.
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said he was on the top floor of the city council building when the quake hit, throwing him across the room.
“I got down onto the street and there were scenes of great confusion, a lot of very upset people,” he said. “I know of people in our building who are injured and I’ve had some reports of serious injuries throughout the city.”
Radio New Zealand reported that a church near the city center collapsed. The station also said staffers in its Christchurch newsroom had to cling to their desks during the shaking, with large filing cabinets toppling over.
Some cars apparently parked on the street were buried under rubble.
“What I can see from where I am in the central city is that there are significant amounts of additional damage,” Parker said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor was centered 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the city at a depth of 2.5 miles (4 kilometers).
Christchurch has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks since a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Sept. 4 last year, causing extensive damage and a handful of injuries, but no deaths.

The city is home to about 350,000 people and is considered a tourist center and gateway to the South Island.
New Zealand sits on the Pacific “ring of fire” — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching from Chile in South America through Alaska and down through the South Pacific. It records more than 14,000 earthquakes a year — but only about 150 are felt by residents, and fewer than 10 a year do any damage.
The Sept. 4 quake wrecked hundreds of buildings in the city, and caused an estimated 4 billion New Zealand dollars ($3 billion) in damage. A strong aftershock in December caused further damage to buildings.
The city was still rebuilding from those quakes when Tuesday’s temblor hit.

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 9:58pmOkay, so I realize that my comment was uncalled for, I’m here complaining about the lack of reporting of another NON DEADLY earthquake when people have lost their lives due to this quake in NZ. My apologies. My heart goes out to these people and the first responders that are assisting. As alumni of the Red Cross Katrina disaster team I should have been more compassionate in regards to commenting on this post.
I realize that The Blaze is compiled of a very small team of journalist (like 4 or 5 people right?) and they are dealing with A LOT of news going on at this very moment, from Wisconsin to NZ to the Middle East so I should give them time to gather the facts and report on the Suez Canal 5.9. Wow, I was just convicted by God:

This is the volcano that is bigger than the last one that blew….the one they kept talking about saying that if it blew,it would melt the entire glacier and cause ocean levels to rise.
As we near the time of the 2012 “cosmic cross” (an alignment of the solar system perpendicular to the galaxy) comes closer, you’ll begin to see more and more natural challenge manifesting itself. It is interesting to note that where as a year ago there was a lot on this subject on google, not much there today. Physics is physics and forces are shifting as we move into alignment. There was a report that the magnetic pole is shifting 25 miles a year towards Russia. Some believe that the poles are getting ready to flip flop. Who knows what will happen then. So the thing to do is prepare…. but most of all prepare your heart…prepare your soul. These times they are “a changing”.

God will not abandon or fail to hear the prayers of his people; we are the example of Him unto the world in the lives we live with Him. And personally, as my grandpa was a marine, they are the best defenders you can have around you along with God himself.
My grandpa used to tell a joke that the only thing worse than a mad marine charging his enemy is the rest of his regement right behind him…after being told the beer barge just got blown up…
It is based on a story of his from WW2, the pacific theater…and they took the hill they charged up as well.

You are stressed out over four things that immediately come to mind. One of them, the Progressives, have just been stirred up. The fact that the Democratic Party had to bus in protesters and pay homeless people to hold picket signs should tell you something about the numbers against numbers, okay? Gov. Scott said he had received 10,000 emails in support of his position. Let the Tea Party get stirred up, and we’ll see who outnumbers whom.

Those who reported Broker 0101 thank you, sometimes my temper gets the better of me with that individual, and I do appologize for my outbursts to the Blazers. Events like this do happen across the world on a weekly, or daily basis dependant where you are and what is happening, and the stories of humanity coming forth to aid one another in the face of opposition and hardship from nature shows we can work togeather and achieve the unachieveable, and take control of our own futures once again.
America is the greatest of the worlds nations in my oppinion, and like the people of NZ wh have to deal with the aftermath of the quakes, we will be able to deal with saving and restoring the nation and the constitution.
the progressive nightmare is our earthquake storms, and how we chose to change and deal with it will determine how the nation will change, and if she will emerge into the light, or disappear into the night once again.

Wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, natural disasters. There will be more coming. Expect more solar flares. The flare this past week was the first of many to come. We have blasphemed God, and we murder our unborn children. We elevate ourselves thinking ourselves to be gods claiming the power of God to create life, control our destiny. I still shake my head in disbelief knowing that even as I write there are some in Switzerland trying to recreate the “big bang”. (I wonder if they’ve ever given a thought to what will happen when they do create a “big bang” setting of a series of events that become uncontrollable). We are not gods, but we are the Children of God. My prayers go out to the people of New Zealand. Yep, still here Josh. Just got back to the keyboard from a contract. Thank you very very much for your concern. And thanks also to Snow and everybody else who offered their kind thoughts. You guys don’t realise how much that these messages mean to us. We really appreciate it. (And to Banjarmon, you are right.)
I’m 300 kms to the north but all of my family are there and, at this time, I have been unable to contact them. I’m reasonably sure that they are ok as they are away from the epicentre, but I’m still trying to get through.
Since the first smack in September, we have all got a bit blase about the shocks. My mother told me last month that she stopped paying attention to the count when it went over 3500. Silly us.
Body count is 65 so far and will go up. The first shock caused a lot of damage but thankfully injury was light because of the hour (around 4 am). Everybody was asleep and the only person that was seriously hurt was the guy whose chimney fell into his bed. This one occured at lunchtime and its getting really tragic. Even though the was a comparatively light one, the seriousness was because the fault was so shallow. About 5 kms down (3 miles).
We fear that this is not over.
