Maine Gov. Talks Tough With Able-Bodied Unemployed: ‘Get Off the Couch and Get a Job!’

Maine Gov. Paul LePage isn’t known to tip-toe around controversial issues. And he lived up to his reputation on Sunday while speaking at the Maine GOP convention. There, he talked tough on welfare reform, and even called out able-bodied workers abusing the system: “Get off the couch and get yourself a job!”

The boisterous political figure made welfare reform a staple of his speech. “I understand welfare because I lived it,” he said. “I understand the difference between a want and a need. The Republican Party promised in 2010 that it would bring welfare change. We must deliver on this promise. …  We need to get it under control.”

“There is such a thing as a free lunch, but you’re picking up the tab!” he said later, pointing his finger.

“Maine’s welfare program is cannibalizing the rest of state government,” he added. “I am compassionate and committed to our children, our elderly, and our disabled. But to all you able-bodied people out there: get off the couch and get yourself a job!”

According tot he Bangor Daily News, he received a standing ovation for that line.

You can watch the entire, rousing speech below (which at one point was interrupted by someone calling for a medic). The money quotes start around the 14:20 mark:

Well, I actually agree with you this time. Yeah, the government is killing business in a big way here. The only jobs in the want ads are for nurses and doctors. We need a lot of them. My brother just lost his job. There are 8 college kids living in a house nearby because they need a combined effort to afford the rent. Another neighbor (she’s deaf and an unmarried mom living with her mom) recently lost their home and now they‘re also being evicted from the apartment because they can’t pay the rent. WE HAVE A HUGE MESS HERE! NO JOBS!
There was a job for a dishwasher recently. I talked with the owner. He said he had over 100 applications for the dish washing job in under a day. He had to pull the sign down and tell people he wasn’t taking any more applications. It’s really bad here. The 8.1% unemployment is bull$h!t… it’s much worse than that.

I see help wanted signs every time I go out. In the Permian Basin (west Texas) even the pizza places are hiring and paying $20/hour due to the booming local oil and gas economy. If you are able bodied and out of work your lazy. If there are no jobs in your state, move.

My husband is 2/3 of the way through law school. He recently got a temporary job that will last through the summer. His boss told him that she had received over 100 applications for his job. It doesn’t pay a lot, but we’re thankful for it.

In 2007 (the last year that we earned above the poverty level), my husband lost four jobs. Every time that he was hired, the company would go bankrupt shortly afterwards and have to lay everybody off.

There might be jobs in some places, but in other places there’s not a lot. There are reasons why people can’t move too; for example, they might be in the middle of getting a law degree, can’t afford to move, or perhaps they have an elderly parent to care for. Texas is one of the places that we will be looking for jobs for when dh graduates.

Now I agree there are those who do sit on their patooties and just want to collect a check and I agree they should try to get a job. This I agree with the Governor on.

    However,

To get a job, you have to get an interview. If you don’t get an interview, how do you expect to get a job you dip _________. It is a catch 22. The problem I have found those who are looking for workers are advertising everything at the SENIOR level; I have the education but not the necessarily the “work” experience. Not one job posted is for a REAL entry level position. Even the ones advertised at “Entry Level” are not entry level. They still require “certifications” with the 0-5 years experience; please tell me what is entry level about that job? I also am near a military town – all the contractor jobs 95% require the applicant to have an active Secret or TS clearance because they don’t want to pay for you getting one.

Employers are just as much a problem as the people sitting at home. So before everyone condemns the unemployed for collecting a check you also need to look at employers. Many claim they can‘t find qualified employee’s in the U.S. yet they also do not want to spend money to train people. They want pre-trained employees that was paid by someone else. Gone are the mentorship hiring, where a new employee worked next to a trained employee to get the training.

Everyone wants their cake and eat too.

I see your problem is you have more excuses NOT to work than you have desire to work. If you had no gov. benefits, hunger would motivate you to work. I have handicapped employees working instead of collecting gov. checks because they still have enough pride not to take from others.

Go mow lawns, go work at walmart, local gas station…hell, get TWO of those jobs and you will still make enough to live. Might not be IDEAL but conservatives don’t live in an IDEAL world, we live in the REAL world. When I was a kid, my dad was let go from his job. This man had 2 Master’s degrees and a PhD. He worked 70 hours a week at a MOVIE GALLERY to make sure we could eat for the next 8 months until he found another job he WANTED. Suck it up, swallow your pride, and do what you MUST!

I know a few people on public assistance and they all need it. They all work jobs and all would go hungry or not have vital needs met if it weren’t for this aid. People that need help because they’re in a tough spot supporting their families or themselves due to unforseen events (job loss, injury, illness etc.) far outweigh the ones gaming the system. Based on anyone I’ve ever met or have spoken with, the decision to accept public aid was never because they said “Hey I just don’t feel like getting a job. I like struggling to pay bills. The constant worry of keeping up with my expenses is totally worth it for a small amount of free money!” It takes a lousy person to leech off the government for everything out of laziness, but the ones who do are few compared to the ones that do it out of necessity.

Do you honestly believe 90% of welfare/public aid recipients don’t really need the money? I mean, you may very well know 9 sad leeches but that would be extraordinary. The more a person on public aid hears that what they’re doing is wrong and immoral, the less they have to lose by voting for Obama.

Wrong as usual, JZS. Like any time in our history, the economy isn’t a monolithic force. Different sectors wax and wane all the time. Manufacturing is picking up right now. Locally, in St. Louis, we’ve seen a lot of “help wanted” signs in windows popping up in just the last few weeks.

Even during the worst of the downturn, one of our customers was going like gang busters. They couldn’t keep up with orders when everyone else in their sub-industry was shrinking and shedding jobs.

There are jobs out there. You must be willing to take one and do the work.

So if this guys comment was to point out that the economy is improving, and that people should persevere in their hunt for employment I applaud him.

But if he’s trying to characterize the unemployed as lazy bums and suggest that every unemployed person could get a job if they only would stop being lazy bums, then I think he’s playing politics and full of crap. In that case, he‘s only trying to deflect from the fact that he’s been unable to create jobs. If he’s only saying that to cast the unemployed as the bad guys and suggest that unemployed people are unemployed because they are lazy bums, then I disagree with him. We are in a recession still.

Good paying jobs are scarce here in Maine but that isn‘t LePage’s fault. He knows he has to clean up the previous regulatory, welfare and entitlement programs to attract business. He‘s isn’t whining about the past, he’s acting. All this while having his message filtered by extreme left media. Virtually every major newspaper and television outlet is hard left. Liberal Senator Pingree and her husband own the largest newspaper in the state (and it shows). So for anyone to lament the lack of jobs here first you need to support this Governor, fill Snowe’s seat with a true conservative, keep a conservative legislature and then vote for pro-business policies. That’s where the jobs come from. I fear that since Ron Paul‘s campaign has literally taken over the GOP here that Maine won’t count in the Presidential election which only helps Obama.

Each one of them stayed on the unemployment until it ran out and in many instances they were given extensions on their benefits. Oh and btw most of you in these programs have first dibbs on jobs.My old manager at a different company told me they were required to hire from those exiting welfare programs ahead of others.Didn’t matter if the person had excellent skills was a former employee and would have been the first pick. They still had to hire the welfare to work people first.
I know that you are in a tough position. You will have to reinvent yourself whether you like it or not.You won‘t be able to get a job if you don’t.Try taking some classes in something that will get you back in the job market quickly.Although if you don’t have any money saved that will be almost impossible. Most of these classes aren’t covered by pell grants and most educational loans[not sure of the last,I am sure of the first.]

On slow days she still came home with at least $50 dollar in cash, but averaged around $100 per shift. She never expected to live on the “salary” of that job either but she made a damn good living on the the tips.
My nursing degree was paid for with tips I made as a bartender and waitress, while I was a single mom of three wonderful kids! It was tough, I even went to apply for assistance but was told I had to sell my home and get rid of my van as those assets made me ineligible for assistance (never understood how owing 100K on home and 10k on car were assets)…didn’t get any help and left me with a really bad impression of the entire system!

Sargeant Major how old are you? I am in Rebecca’s boat, except I am 60. I have a Master’s. I have taught PT college classes. I did not get any summer classes. I can’t stand for 4 hours much less 8 hours on my feet any longer, thus Fast Food, Retail etc are not doable. I am guessing neither can Rebecca. You are right you can’t walk in our shoes.

Employer’s regardless see older employees as making their health premiums rise, so they do discriminate against us; they come up with other reasons not to hire other than age.

You all want to blame everyone based on a few that take advantage of the hand-outs. I want to be employed, but first you have to qualify for outlandish requirements; go read some job requirements and see how many you qualify for. I do apply to some, but in my boat the majority “require an active TS clearance”; just another way to discriminate. Some require certifications, which can cost hundreds of dollars to get, which is hard when you are making NO money.

I do not collect unemployment, I am living on savings. I can’t do this forever.

I am so sick of this when the government trains folks to pay for these programs and encourages a safety net why are they confused when folks utilize the system they paid for? enough already I am a conservative but this guy needs a reality check, unless he does away with unenployment what do you expect? folks want the money they paid into this. I look at my social security statement of how much me and my husband have paid in and I think write me a check federal gov.

Socialism..your belief is the redistribution of wealth.. but on the facts..the states receiving more money are the states that grow food and raise meat to feed your little city slickin’ face. If you look at the states receiving more “fed” funds, they are also the states that receive the most farm subsidies, which those horrible extreme right wingers would like to end. However when we do, we will be happy to charge you out the a$$ for our product.

There are jobs to be had. You either need to raise your standards, get a real education not a fluff liberal arts BS degree, or you need to lower your standards, in other words get over yourselves you can do manual labor.

I met two gentlemen yesterday when they came to pump out my septic tank, who were better people then any of the OWS types crying about how life wasn’t fair. They didn’t make a lot by they made enough to support their families.

Maine has been blue for decades and this is the first Republican Gov. in years. He’s done quite alot in less than 2 years, including eliminating food stamp fraud. It will take awhile to undo the work of his predecessors and he will do it. He‘s been a successful business man for years and he’s got guts!

That‘s one of LePage’s goals since he’s been elected governor… to make Maine a business-friendly state. The guy is working hard and has been true to what he said in his campaign. Maine has been decimated by liberals for a loong time- this is the first time we‘ve had a Republican governor and Congress in I don’t know how long (yes, I’m from Maine.) LePage talks the talk but he is also walking the walk.

Really? Just get off the couch and get a job? Ivory mansions must be real nice.

Each job gets hundreds and hundreds of resumes. The idea that jobs are somehow easy to come by is delusional. The idea that people are not looking shows that he has little knowledge about the people that he governs.

I think that working at McDonalds would bring home a larger paycheck than sitting on unemployment. The problem is that because it isn’t the job we want most would probably rather stay on unemployment until a preferable job was landed. Unfortunately, the jobs that we want are not here and unless people start up new business’ the waiting will be a long time. This is what has to happen in America! We can’t wait for “someone else” to create a job for us!

The paradigm of applying for a job that is posted through help wanted ads is old-school anyway. By the time the job is posted, it’s likely that an employer already has a prospect in mind but they have to advertise to avoid charges of discrimination. The trick here is to cold-call. Mail those resumes to a department head in the company (ies) you would like to work for. Use the internet (Manta and LinkedIn for example) to get names. It takes a little more work than using the want-ads, but the likelihood that you will get interviews is a lot higher. Change your job search method – you may be pleasantly surprised.

Welfare is not only unconstitutional it’s immoral to take from one to give to another, that’s what charities are for,oh that’s right I almost forgot our Marxist in chief has done away with tax deductible contributions.

They did away with charitable contributions so as to stem the tide of terrorist organizations. It was also done to seperate the state and church. You might not have known this but that deduction was created in the 1950s.It actually irked those who went to church for faith as it created a business climate. It caused the faithful to fall away from the church. How ironic that the communist witch hunts began about then too.See it was on the agenda that if you didn’t attend church regularly that could be considered as a sign you might be communist. The fact it was created on purpose to drive out the faithful wasn’t discussed. Its why when I read on here that there are those who want to bring back the communist witch hunts I about barf.

Here are some facts on Governor LePage regarding his personal story, it is great. He left home at 14 years old because of abuse. The last time his father abused him he flipped a quarter at him so that he would tell the hospital he fell down the stairs. He did not go back home. Instead he pulled himself up and look at him now. He spoke French Canadian and had to learn English. He is a college graduate. He has an adopted black son and did not use this during the campaign. Yes, he is not the best public speaker but he is truly trying to do what is right for Maine. ….the largest Maine newspaper the Portland Press Herald trashes him at every chance…why because Chellie Pingree’s husband owns it.

I just pray that the state of Maine will replace Olympia Snow and eventually Susan Collins who I just saw on Fox patting herself on the back regarding pumping a boatload of funding into the USPS, with other people equal to your governor. Funny thing is things are improving in Maine, balancing the budget, lowering taxes and trying to pay the hospitals the money they’re owed. I will say he doesn’t tip-toe around and he speaks his mind but at least he is trying to change Augusta.

I also love the libs with the bumper stickers saying 61% of Maine didn’t vote for LePage but their democrat nominee, a Nancy Pelosi clone, only got around 15.9% of the vote.

Not hard to look good when the previous Governor and legislators acted like beggars to the federal government most of the time. But yes, the real lefties hate that they voted for the Democrat who had no shot and as a result their second choice lost to LePage. More amusing is that if you use that same 61% logic, then the last governor would have had bumper stickers saying 62% all over the cars of Republicans.

Boy, do I feel your pain… and you and I are the ones who don’t sit around on our a$$3$ waiting for someone to pay our way, are we? I have been out of work for over a year… So I started a gift basket business from my home. I am blessed with a wonderful husband who takes as much overtime as is offered so we can get by, but our family has cut back on EVERYTHING! Even though we reduced the amount of groceries we buy (I make our soaps, grow our food, am learning to hunt) our monthly grocery bill hasn’t gone down. Our fuel bill has gone up even though one of the cars is parked 50% of the time. Our power bill has increased. Our heating bill has increased (the Goodwill has great sweaters!) and we made the hard choice to eliminate some of our daughter’s activities (volleyball camp, driver’s ed) because we can’t afford either the gas to get her there or the tuition fees.

This is very frustrating, and my small business is simply solvent. I am not in debt, but the money I make off of it barely covers any of our monthly bills.

Chin up, though Bryan. I am praying for you. God has something in store for you and your journey that will help you understand the necessity of this trial.

I hate the thought of packing up my family and moving, but we are in times unlike our parents ever dealt with. You do whatever it takes to survive and put food on the table even if it means to go out of our comfort zone. You’ll do it and you know you will! Keep the faith!
