Majority of Egyptians Support the Muslim Brotherhood & Want to Scrap the 1978 Egypt Israeli Peace Treaty

With Egyptians heading to the polls in mere days, fears are beginning to run rampant regarding what will happen with relations between Israel and Egypt. A new study from the Pew Global Attitudes Project does little to temper worries, as it showcases that a majority of Egyptians want to abandon a peace treaty that was signed between the two Middle Eastern nations.

The Pew study, released earlier this month, found a startling 61 percent of Egyptians claiming that they would be in favor of abandoning the Egypt-Israeli peace treaty, with only 32 percent supporting it. This proportion is up from 54 percent in 2011. The treaty was originally negotiated at Camp David in 1978 and was signed the following year at the White House. If an Islamist president decides to scrap it, there would be broad implications in the region.

Sixty-one percent view the billions in aid that the U.S. sends to Egypt as “mostly negative” in its impact.

Here are some of the other troubling findings that CNS News parsed from the data:

  • On the role of religion in government, 61 percent chose Saudi Arabia as the preferred model. (Turkey came in at 17 percent).
  • Asked whether Egypt’s laws should strictly adhere to the Qur’an, 60 percent said yes while 32 percent said it should follow the values and principles of Islam and only six percent said laws should not be influenced by the teachings of the Qur’an.
  • Seventy percent of respondents viewed the Muslim Brotherhood favorably, down from 75 percent in 2011. The Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, also received the highest support rating among political parties, 56 percent.
  • Priority issues in the election are the economy and a fair judiciary (81 percent each), with others including free speech (60 percent), equal rights for women (41 percent) and religious freedom (38 percent.)

Already, Islamist groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood — which has substantial support among Egyptians — are dominating parliament. A sympathetic or radical president could tip the scales, creating even more chaos in the unstable region. Considering the candidates and the emerging rhetoric, this is certainly concerning.

On Monday, The Blaze reported about troubling comments about jihad coming from Mohammed Mursi, a Egyptian presidential candidate being touted by the Muslim Brotherhood. Additionally, Real News explored similar themes last night surrounding whether the Egypt presidential election will spell trouble for Israelis.

As CNS notes, Aboul-Fotouh, a former Muslim Brotherhood leader and Amr Moussa, the former foreign minister, are the frontrunners. In a debate last week, they used words like “enemy” and “adversary” to describe Israel.

The election will be held May 23-24.

    I think decisions were made long ago, long before I was born. The man pulling all the strings is God. He has always been in control.

      I saw this coming as well and thought the same thing you did. Peple would say, “Oh, isn’t this wonderful?” And I’d say, “This is just the beginning of the worldwide caliphat.” People said I was nuts and I would tell them it’s all in Revelations. They would ask what God had to do with this and I would answer that EVERTHING is about God.

      We don’t talk anymore…………I hope they have been watching what has happened and maybe, just maybe think about what I said.

      im not an athiest, and not a hardcore christian either…. but I believe that GOD gave us the blessing to be free, keeping freedom is our job. our’s as in “the people”. APATHY is what is going to let OBAMA win again. LETHARGY (and crap reality shows) is what is going to let this happen as we are too entertained to see the storm coming.
      If you have a teenager @16+ yrs…. ask them what they know of what is going on in foreign affairs…. because it will be them to go and fight off the jihadists when it all comes down. Not us the parents… our children… I seriously doubt the OBAMA children are going to be drafted anytime soon, and we can’t blame no one but ourselves for not expressing our concern to our representatives and holding them accountable for their actions or lack of…

    I think it is pretty safe to say Mexico is full of poor people that could be easily converted with money, we do not have to look far to find similar poor nations that religion has bought out by building things for them while on missions so soon enough this could happen with Mexico and of course muslims will convert all blacks to their religion in an effort to rid the world of the white devil, think I am crazy or wrong, do not go to sleep, this is gonna happen

    why is this really shocking. The middle east is full of people wishing and fighting FOR their enslavement, not against. They have NEVER wanted to be like us and in face the west and them hold complete ly different ideas on how life is. We cannot coexist and we cannot work together nor ignore eachother and hold true to our beliefs. its not that hard to understand and its not that shocking. But people need to grow up and get out of this suicidal notion that we can live and let live. we need to wipe out islam from the planet and show no mercy. and for thoes who want to argue with me fine but remember they are plannign the same against us. and its not some yahoos in the mountains. it is the MAJORITY of islam, not “extreamist” not “radical islam” it IS ISLAM!

      the Egyptians have very long term memory problems; on one hand I believe they have never forgotten what happened at the “Red Sea incident”, where they lost the flower of their military and their pharoah and a load of riches. Never mind it was a son of Israel that brought all that wealth into Egypt in the first place. Egypt has never been a world power since and that was more than a few thousand years ago. “I will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you…remember? They have forgotten that part.       It’s funny…the only ones oblivious to the Muslim Bros’ intentions were Obama and the liberals who gushed over the “arab spring”. Beck called this one with almost prophetic accuracy.
      But why mince words here? The radical left is anti-Israel, this is exactly the course they wanted taken in Egypt. The only thing standing in the way of a new enemy for Israel is the Egyptian army which has ruled Egypt for decades regardless of Mubarak’s presence.

    Why does CNS News find it troubling that the economy is the top issue with the people?

    Why does CNS News find it troubling that the people are concerned with women’s rights and free speech and above all, a fair judicial system?

    If you Blazers weren’t memorized by Glenn Beck and his Bogeymen, like the Muslim Brotherhood, this story takes on an entirely different, and more worrisome, meaning. The FACT is that ISLAM is the ENEMY of America. This story is simply nature taking its course. Give Muslims a vote and they cast it for Sharia Law. End of story.

      Us giving them money didnt start with Obama. We have been playing this game for along time. When will we figure out that giving money to these nations doesnt buy us good will and in the end it comes back against us.

      We do still have one guy running for president that wants to end the river of our dollars headed to these nations.

      Will Israel be safer or less safe when our economy collapses? There is only one of the three candidates that addresses this issue.

      So both of you support giving money to these nations? Here is an idea, quit giving money to these animals. No aid, no nothing. They have sand, let them eat that. Starving troops with very old weapons dont fight well.

      Are we not going to learn that when we get involved there is a polarizing effect. The ones that end up making money love us, the majority of the population hate us.

      My father is from Chile. I asked him one day “dad to people in Chile like us?”. He said the people of Chile love Americans and hate our government. They believe all we do is stick our noses in other peoples business and we end up creating more problems.

      We funded Bin Laden, Saddam, and Pinochet in Chile. We need to wake up and fix our country. No place on earth will be safe if we fall into bankruptcy and chaos.
