Majority Support Banning Common Allergen Foods in Public — Do You?

A recent NPR-Thomson Reuters Health Poll of 3,000 adults reported 59 percent of them would be fine with having foods that are common allergens banned from public places as a safety measure.
But, as NPR reports, what constitutes a food allergy can be hard to identify and quantify in a population:
“Food allergy has no universally accepted definition,” according to a review of the medical literature that was published last year in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association. That has complicated the task of coming up with precise figures on of the prevalence of food allergies.

Though peanut products may already be banned in some schools, what and where else is next? (The Parent Experiment)
Some schools and other public places have already banned items like peanut butter. After considering to ban peanuts on planes in 2010, the U.S. Department of Transportation decided in 2011 that it was unenforceable and abandoned the topic for now. Although, United and AirTran airlines decided not to carry snack nuts on board.
Though peanuts and other nut allergies are the most publicized because they have the most severe reactions, 9 percent of those surveyed had peanut allergies, compared to more than one-third with a dairy allergy and 19 percent with a fruit allergy.
The survey also asked if people felt food allergy fears were overblown: 51.5 percent said no.
What do you think?

Posted on August 9, 2011 at 8:01amIf you know you are allergic to a certain food group and you continue to eat it, you deserve what you get for being too ignorant or obstinate to stop. Where does it stop if they did do this? There wouldn’t be a food store left in business if this occurred! How stupid is that idea. Must have come from the “regulatory brilliance” of one Cass Sundstein; that guy would regulate SUNLIGHT if he could find a way…… We all can attribute the over-regulation of this regime to one person, the same Cass Sundstein!

Report Post »Problem is people don’t know the difference between side effect and allergic reaction when talking about MSG. Many, many people have side effects to MSG (i.e. headache), but, as you said, few have an immunologic reaction to it. Those with a strong tendency towards headaches are really sensitive to MSG. I steer clear of it as its just another source of sodium I don’t need.

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 11:59pmGood grief, a significant percentage of the population has some amount of allergy to wheat. Are you going to ban all products with wheat? Running from allergies only produces greater sensitivity. Exposure in measure amounts will allow the body to strengthen and adapt. I‘m allergic to many things but would never think to tell other people they can’t have something because of my problem.

Posted on August 9, 2011 at 6:40amI have celiac disease, which means I can’t have wheat, oats, barley or rye. (Oats in America are rotated with wheat, but Irish oats are grown in dedicated fields, so they’re fine.) I’m for better labeling, but not banning those foods in public. That’s just ridiculous. Celiac isn’t technically an allergy, but an autoimmune disorder. Right now, since barley and rye aren’t recognized as allergens, they don’t even have to list them on the label, it can be hidden under “natural ingredients.” Which means I get a severe stomach ache when I eat them. My sister-in-law is allergic to shell fish. If you banned all allergens, you would have to quit selling food. I adapt. There are places I can‘t go because there’s nothing I can eat there. Get over it.

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 11:12pmAs the mother of a 3 year old with a peanut allergy I still say no. It would make mine and my daughters lives a lot easier, but it isn‘t fair to everyone else and certainly isn’t the role of the government. If a business or school chooses to do that voluntarily is up to them. If someone informs them ahead of time and they choose to accommodate that person great! For example if I was flying and informed the airline of my daughters allergy I think they could voluntarily ask other flyers not to bring PB on board, but if they chose not to I would have to accept that and find another way to travel (because on an airplane if someone opened up PB or a bag of peanuts my daughter could be dead before we ever got her help. An epi-pen only buys you about 20 mins to get to an ER.)

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 11:16pmI suppose that we continue to re-elect the same government leaders in spite of their failure to truly represent our needs and wishes. We elect people whose looks we like and whose oratorical skills impress us. They say hope springs eternal, but that is a pretty slim defense in the face of reality. Things will only improve when we replace the self-seeking elected with representatives who truly represent us. It’s time to stop acting like the mindless peasants they consider us. DID YOU VOTE IN THE LAST ELECTION? If not, I don’t want to hear any more complaints. We all need to step up and vote, contact the elected with our opinions, and hold them accountable to their promises. Get off the keyboard, attend town hall events, and find others in your area who are likeminded. Alone we are pretty powerless but united we have the strength needed to bring about the changes necessary to get us to the America we want. Read, listen, and watch the reports of daily events and act on them if you feel we need to make changes.
