‘Makes Very Little Sense’: Why Are Army Tanks Rolling Down Residential Roads for Training in St. Louis?

Late last week and through the weekend, citizens of St. Louis, Mo., were told not to be alarmed should they see military vehicles roll by their home. Even with this warning, though, some wondered why the U.S. Army was taking the vehicles off the base and to the streets in the first place.
According to KSDK-TV, Army specialists from Fort Meade came into town for a training exercise for members of the 354 MP company. As the reporter states, this “drivers’ ed.” for armored vehicles will take place on city streets and the highway.
Watch the KSDK report:
As noted in the video, the military is warning onlookers to steer clear of the tanks should they be seen on the road. Still, this caused Brandon Smith from Alt-Market in a guest post for Zero Hedge to wonder why the military is really conducting this training in public at all, saying it “makes very little sense to me.” He poses these questions:
U.S. Army troops all the way from Maryland running open exercises in armored personnel carriers on the busy streets of St. Louis? I know Maryland is a small state, but is there really not enough room at Ft. Detrick to accommodate a tank column and some troops? Are there not entire fake neighborhood and town complexes built with taxpayer dollars on military bases across the country meant to facilitate a realistic urban environment for troops to train in? And why travel hundreds of miles to Missouri?
He also points out that some local reports did mention some citizens being worried about the purpose of the training exercise but those featured in the report were all supporters. The local Fox affiliate has a couple examples of the supporters in its report:
In the video, two locals explain that they think the presence of troops or law enforcement that looks like the military could help cut down on crime in the area.
Smith wonders this as well writing in response to his above questions that it “makes perfect sense if the goal is to acclimate citizens to the idea of seeing tanks and armed military acting in a policing capacity.”
“One of the interviewees even points out that in some countries they don’t use police at all; only military. This is true,” he writes. “We call those countries ‘tyrannies.’”
The training is expected to continue through June 28.
Update: A Blaze reader has informed us that the vehicles being used in the training are not tanks but heavily armored vehicles. The Army Reserve company’s name was also the 354th MP company, not NP as we originally reported.

The Guard always moves its tracks to Yakima Training Center from Ft. Lewis this time of year. Why? Because its time for the National Guard‘s annual training or ’summer camp’. You will see small units or parts of units moving all over the country this time of year as units consolidate from remote armories and reserve centers and move to their summer training areas.
Honestly people…You have got to lay off the dillusion juice.

I sent the Blaze a link about 2 months ago and people were see large amounts of equipment being moved to the East Coast! It wasn’t just a few tanks and equipment. The story stated that train cars and Semis were moving large amounts to the East Coast. Any Idea? Some people were saying this is way more than what they normally see! Would they load ships on the East Coast? Or is there something else happening that maybe were not supposed to know?

Has it been done before yes, I’ve taken part in many low vis urban and suburban training events, the key is to reduce the footprint and impact on the public, this does not do that.

I was stationed at Fort Lewis and this totally different from convoy operations en route to Yakima in which convoys are only limited to the route to Yakistan. Army units do not train in actual towns (at least none that I’ve ever been in). To me this does not seem like a drivers training class en mass. Where are the “Student Driver” placards? In my 8+ years is the Army I have never seen this. EVER!

This is what I would do! Fuse in a little more socalled training with a massive in flux of equipment to the area. Don’t be alarmed because its training excercise only.
Russia, China, Syria, Iran are conducting their own training exercises right along side our massive never before type of training excercise in the Jordan and Israel areas.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 7:18pmThank you SETH…I was in the army, in several different places in several different types of units. I have NEVER seen 1 or 2 military vehicles go down residential side streets OFF BASE for “training”. Every base I’ve every been too has had places to do that training in out in the middle of nowhere, ON BASE, or in a long convoy on the highway. I don’t know if this is some cover-up for planning martial law, but I do know this training was meant NOT ONLY as a “drivers ed” but also to measure response and draw a reaction from the citizens as well as acclimate the community…that much is GUARANTEED, this doesn’t make ANY sense otherwise.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 7:32pmNo…re-read the article. This isn’t about moving the military to a different training ground, this is about making St. Louis the training ground. We see military vehicles in our area all the time, but there are specific areas where they are more prevalent. If there were a squad, a company, or a battalion in a different area there would be legitimate concern.
Again, Ronin_6 read the article…not what you want it to say but what it actually says.

Report Post »Without getting to deep into operational details let me just say that there are lots of reasons to move equipment around. Units are on different statuses throughout the training year. Sometimes they are in a wait and see mode, sometimes they are stood down and refit and sometimes they are sent overseas to replace other units in different theaters. Sometimes vehicle and equipment stocks are rotated on and off fast deployment ships.
Without knowing exactly when the vehicles were moving, what type of vehicles were moving or where they came from or are going to anything is just speculation. Even if I did know I wouldn’t say in a public forum like this.
The armed forces aren’t just a bunch of spear holders standing on a wall. We move all over the place. Units from Ft. Drum NY will transport their vehicles by rail to places lie Ft. Irwin in CA or JRTC in LA. Units from Washington state will send people to the Mountain warfare school in Vermont. The Hawaii National Guard will send its units to AK for arctic training Its just part and parcel of the modern American army. It might look nefarious to see Armored vehicles moving down the highway especially if you haven’t seen it before but that’s just one of the blessings we have living in this fine country.
Nothing insidious. Truly.

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 2:06amThose who say they have never seen this type of training only prove that they have never seen this type of training, not that it doesn’t occur. When I was in the Guard back in the 80‘s we conducted driver’s training through residential neighborhoods all the time. Everything from M151 1/4 ton jeeps up to M35A2 Deuce and halfs and 50 passenger buses. We even drove M113 APC’s and M2 Bradleys around (boy did the city hate that. Tore up all the little bumps in the road). Our armory was on an old Nike site right in the middle of a residential neighborhood not far from Microsoft headquarters. It was about the size of a small school circa 1950. Not much room to train so when we had home station drills we drove when and where we could. Once the local high school was having a car wash so I brought the whole units jeeps down and had the cheer leaders give them the once over. They loved it.

1. The first report was about 100 white buses with UN insignia painted on the sides parked in a remote section of Fort Eustis, VA.
2. The second report involved a project at Camp Lejeune, NC, that was using contractors to convert ambulances to paddy wagons with bunks and shackles. Curiously, the final step in the conversion process was to paint them flat black.

The standard press release that is issued every single time the military will be performing convoy operations or other training in a civilian area? The same one I, as an Army public affairs sergeant, has had to write several times? This is out of the ordinary? Because we have to write these each and every time there is any sort of off-post convoy. Most of the time, you just don’t read them because nobody notices the trucks were there in the first place.
Report Post »I’m also confused because everybody seems to be concerned that “tanks” are rolling down the streets. Where exactly are these tanks? They certainly aren’t in any of the videos of this supposed incident. Oh, are you fools talking about those little security vehicles the MP’s drive around in. Folks, just cause it‘s got a turret doesn’t make it a tank. I believe this would be the M1117, not even as big as a Bradley.
As for why they would be driving through neighborhoods, not everything in Iraq or Afghanistan is a 4 lane highway. Train as you fight, people. You should have seen the looks on the German’s faces every time we went convoying through one of their towns to get to a field site with PATRIOT missile launchers that were over 20 feet long mounted on the back of a HEMMT. Lots of stop signs were liberated during some of those tight turns. That was a missile launcher. These are trucks.
There is literally nothing to see here people.

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 10:39amSorry, but no. The military does do training here and there that requires them to move vehicles and equipment to different places, BUT routes are NOT routinely taken through residential neighborhoods in urban and suburban areas. In fact, due to road closures or whatever, the military will generally travel miles out of its way to stay on main roads and out of residential neighborhoods. Tactical vehicles don’t even drive through the housing areas on a military installation for any reason, let alone residential areas in the city or suburbs. Additionally, commercial transport is generally used to move vehicles and equipment that have any real distance to travel to get to their training areas.
One other thing I’d like to throw out there is, for now at least, whatever reasons are being fed to Joe Shmoe army guy (including ranks up to smaller unit Sergeants’ Majors and smaller unit commanders, for receiving orders to “train” like this or train extensively on civilian personnel handling is coming from much higher in the chain (like Washington level). Most Soldiers are just following orders and if there ARE nefarious intentions behind it all, the lower echelon leaders and Soldiers most likely don’t know about them and few would formally question them.

It is perfectly legitimate to do driver’s training in relatively small vehicles down normal roads. Where else would they do it? At the reserve center? Ha! Good luck with that. Reserve centers are not large posts like a Ft. Benning or Bragg. They are often just a single building with a tiny motor pool and an overcrowded parking lot. Main roads and highways? Why not put the 15-year-olds in driver‘s training out onto the interstate on crotch rockets from day one while you’re at it. Most civilians couldn’t even start a military vehicle, let alone drive the thing. These people are weekend warriors, meeting up two days a month to do paperwork, participate in ceremonies, and do PT. They travel no faster than 40 mph and cause some congestion, but they are not patrolling. Armor is transported on lowboys, not on public highways and streets. Tracked armor is extremely destructive to pavement.
You call it “delusion juice”, I call it Jenga. Pull out one brick at a time, and the Constitution remains standing. Eventually, the wrong brick is removed and the Constitution is is a crumpled heap. Then what? I won’t give you a history lesson, but you should read up on it. Discover for yourself what a difference an all volunteer force and regular assignment rotations make. Those two seemingly innocuous areas of our armed forces play a big part in the stability of our country.

You mention that near Yakima was a training ground. Saint Louis is not a training ground. It is many time larger than Yakima.
Could be completely innocent. But as Zero Hedge pointed out there are already mock towns built for training.

Most residential roads are not rated for 62 ton armoured troop carriers, much of what I saw were even heavier, they will tear up asphalt roads, or cement not thick enough and more layers of reinforcing bars (“rebar”), such as on highways.

Apparently the unit is just now being issued the M1117 ASV, or Armored Security Vehicle adopted by the Military Police in the late ’90s. I crewed one until the vehicles were eventually washed out of the active Army. In the mid ’90s while I was a combat doctrine writer for USAMPS the R&D section within our directorate worked hand in hand with Cadillac-Gauge to develop an upgraded version of the V150 that had followed the V100 but only in use with other nations at that time. I was at Ft McClellan when the prototype ASV was delivered for some tests. I thought it was funny. Of the troops there I was the only one who had experience driving a similar vehicle, but was not allowed to do any more than look through that one. Now, it is in use by other MOSes as well.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 6:56pmCONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE BASRA, Iraq – The soldiers of 354th Military Police Company, attached to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, are going strong on their mission to help Iraqi police operate their police stations more effectively. The MP squads visit police stations in the Basra province and provide training courses for Iraqi police officers and the Iraqi Army. The training consists of crime scene management, room entry procedures, officer safety, and riot control. Soldiers from the 354th MP Company instruct these courses both at COB Basra and Iraqi Police training centers.
“Our police team’s mission is critical to the support and stability of Iraq during this transition. We are teaching them critical skills and compounding the basic skills they possess already, helping them to achieve a more effective and efficient police force in Basra,” said 1st Lt. Angela Smith, commander, 354th MP Company. Based out of St. Louis, Mo., the 354th MP Company is a reserve unit where many of the soldiers are civilian police officers back home and can share first-hand experiences and knowledge with the Iraqi Police. Having both the skills of a military police officer and a civilian police officer is unique to the Army Reserves.
Thus far, the Iraqi police officers are very impressed with the knowledge and skills these Soldiers have and can relate to their experiences as civilian police officers, said Smith.

This, with everything else he and his admin has done certainly has most people rather spooked. I can almost understand some of the paranoia. But, some have gone overboard. LOL, makes me think back to when “Red Dawn” was being filmed. The director John Milius, a super stickler for details had a number of tanks and other rented vehilces mocked up to look like then Soviet equipment. When these were being trucked to the filming locations the populations in the area freaked out to the point that cops started pulling the trucks over and notifying the feds. We are living that old Chinese curse. “May you live in interesting times.”
Report Post »You nailed the remainder of the details regarding that this is the time frame for Guard and Reserve movements to their assigned AT locations. As for the remainder of the military convoys, we are at war and units move to their jump off points. Regardless of where these units are located, they just can’t jump into the air and deploy. Thanks for your cool head too.

Crack the periscope and the driver cannot see. Clog the ventilation system and they will have to come out. For every weapon system developed, there later came an anti-weapon to counter it. Now, take away the weapons of the people and then we are really in peril.
As for the training in this article, I have read where the military has been training to combat riots in urban environment. Obama planning for the coming riots when countries stop buying our debt and we become the Weimar Republic or Zimbabwe when QE3 trashes the Dollar and throws us over the edge? Posted on June 25, 2012 at 10:45pmIf it comes down to martial law and the US military actually does move on US citizens then, sadly, they have become the enemy (may it NEVER happen). We may have pea-shooters in comparison but we’re not helpless.
In a urban setting they are playing on our turf where we know the streets, alleys, short-cuts, man-hole cover hiding spots etc. Remember that during the American Revolution the mighty British army, standing in ranks, was sitting ducks for the Patriots hiding behind rocks and trees. Hit and run. Think Red Dawn.
Wolfgang has some excellent points. The more sophisticated the equipment is the more vulnerable spots it has. A sharpshooter could take out the ‘scope and then head out the back door and cross-lots through the yards, a home-made mix of Chlorox and Drano poured in the vent intake generates phosgene gas ( ? if I remember my HS chemistry). Don‘t know about IED’s but there are enough vets around that would. Like a wolf pack take out the last in line or the isolated loner.
Don’t forget psychological warfare. Plaster the area with posters like”WE’RE AMERICANS TOO !” or pictures of small children, hot babes or grandmother-type ladies with the caption “PLEASE DON’T SHOOT ME”.
It’s a terrible thing to have to even consider worst-case scenarios like this but we appear to be in the prelude to the crazy years. Thank you SO much, Dewey Progressive education.

I am 3rd generation Army. My son is on active duty now. Neither of us has been conditioned to take over the US.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 4:04pmRonin, do you think this training cannot be used against us? Ever heard that the best place to hide something is in plain sight? That goes for un-American agendas too. This is not our daddy’s military anymore, for lots of reasons. And in charge of it is the first anti-American ever to be elected to the WH. I don’t see how you can assess the purpose of these maneuvers with the same certainty you could have even 4 years ago.
You seem confident that you know that these maneuvers have nothing to do with potential plans to control Americans. You base that opinion on what you observed in the past, when a training exercise was just that and nothing more. With due respect, you display the exact complacency that others on this blog are warning about. They say the true purpose of these maneuvers may be to desensitize us to the presence/threat of military patrols in our streets. You discount their concerns even as you fail to see that you are already so desensitized that your assessment of the potential threat is not reliable
Obama is the commander in chief of the military and you are sworn to follow his orders. Most of you WILL follow unlawful orders when your CO stands before you and threatens to shoot you for treason if you don’t.
The suspicion with which people view these training exercises is not paranoia. Given Obama’s disdain of America and his rationalization for deploying his planned “civilian army,” increased vigilance is entirely rational.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 6:51pmI am on the east coast of Florida and also saw a few sand colored tanks being flat bedded going south on 95. There is no military bases close to where this happened or where they were headed. Looks like they are getting ready for civil unrest. What are they going to do when the verdict comes down on Obamacare? or when the dollar finally tanks? or worse yet if the Muslim Brotherhood decides that Obama isn’t moving fast enough for them?

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 9:48pmWEAVER, You do have National Guard and Reserve armored units in that area, correct? If headed south on I-95 they are likely being returned to their units from repairs that occurred either at Picatinny Arsenal, or Anniston Army Depot. If they looked super clean with new paint, I would say that is exactly what happened.
Report Post »I live less than thirty miles from Anniston Army Depot, and was even stationed within a few miles back before I retired sixteen years ago. We see all sorts of truck convoys with tanks, bare tank hulls, turrets, tracks, and even stripped M88s, along with all sorts of military vehicles or parts of vehicles coming into the area. As well, convoys of rebuilt tanks, M88s, and other vehicles in fresh paint being returned to their units. These vehicles have a certain lifetime to them, and are rebuilt every so often by Army guidelines. So, you will see all sorts of convoys at various times.
Now, with Nat’l Guard and Reserve Summer AT going on, you will see all sorts of convoy coming and going to and from various military installation set up to handle this type of training. When I was at Ft Drum in ‘84-’85, the summers where filled with these units all summer long.

No one here trusts the Commander in Chief and most reasonable people no longer trust the media either, so when they say don’t be afraid, I’m not buying it one bit.

The affect this may have psychologically can’t be fully known, but it is interesting to note that when Washington wants to send a message to a belligerent nation, they do so by staging military exercises in close proximity to its borders. Could this same tactic be at work against U.S. Citizens?

But But, thats why we have to vote him out in Novmeber as Glenn says, having him impeached or charged with treason is just a distraction, thats what Glenn tells us. So put your nose to the grind and Work on Mittens campaign… after all he supports many of the same policies as Obama.. NDAA, he supports Obama’s over use of executive orders.. But remember Mitt isnt a communist though, If Glenn really knows the nature of Obama as we do, and he continues to marginalize those that cause for impeachment then Glenn is a fraud. I fear as most of you do, that no matter what the citizens vote for come November.. Obama will find a way to stay in power, it is the only cause he truly cares for.

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 8:55pmYou should read the book “America-Lite” by David Gelerneter, he is a Professor of Political Science at Harvard (yes-he is a Conservative). He writes just about what you are talking about, one piece of the book says: “Harvard, Yale, and other Ivy League schools no longer teach anything of substance…ie History, what it took to build this country from its beginning, what they ‘are’ being taught is that what we stand for is wrong and bad. That somehow we have become the bad guys, they are smarter at learning how to use their iPhones and argue points wrongly, but believe it to their core. They have lost the ability to learn the truth, this has been going on for decades.
“Airhead Liberal: Accepts Liberal-Anit American political ideas religiously, but never questions them.”
In most of today’s Universities, you cannot question what you have been taught, they no longer have the ability to think for themselves when it comes to common sense ideals, or political ideals. These so-called Airhead’s turn their minds off to anything or anyone else’s opinion and keep it off, the intention is to keep them from thinking on their own, about anything other than what they have been told, this is not exclusive to just college students. The Hitler/Marxist effect.”
This is what he has seen happen over the decades he has been teaching, being 68 and being a professor, they cannot get rid of him…Tenure!

4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a “state of emergency” on a state, or to enter with force into a state, without the express consent and invitation of that state’s legislature and governor.
5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty and declares the national government to be in violation of the compact by which that state entered the Union.
6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.
7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

@CatB: Something I just thought of; could these vehicles be part of regular maneuvers, but those troops who are solidly loyal to the nation and Constitution be preparing for a move on DC, in support of the lawful successor of Obama if/when he declares his seizure of power?
It is a possibility; the preparation for when the call comes from whoever in the chain of succession lawfully gives the order to oust the dictator to be after his declaration of tyranny comes?
