Malaysia Censors Gay Lyrics in Lady Gaga’s Homo-Sexy Hit, ‘Born This Way’

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP / THE BLAZE) — Malaysian radio stations worry some lyrics in Lady Gaga’s homo-sexy anthem “Born This Way” are on the wrong track, baby.
Broadcasters in this Muslim-majority nation have refused to play lines in the hit song that encourage public acceptance of gays, claiming Thursday they are being cautious because the government forbids offensive content.
Malaysians who tune in to popular stations hear edited versions of “Born This Way” that use indecipherable garble to replace the lyrics: “No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I’m on the right track, baby.”
AMP Radio Networks, Malaysia’s top private radio operator, said the precaution was due to government restrictions against songs that might violate “good taste or decency or (are) offensive to public feeling.”
“The particular lyrics in ‘Born This Way’ may be considered as offensive when viewed against Malaysia’s social and religious observances,” the company said in a statement to The Associated Press. “The issue of being gay, lesbian or (bisexual) is still considered as a ‘taboo’ by general Malaysians.”
Broadcasters can face fines up of to 50,000 ringgit ($16,000) and other penalties for breaking the rules. AMP Radio Networks runs eight radio channels, including Malaysia’s No. 1 English-language station, Hitz.fm, which has an estimated 1.5 million listeners.
Malaysian gay rights activist Pang Khee Teik criticized the broadcasters’ decision, saying the media should be “a platform for marginalized voices and create understanding – not perpetuate ignorance and hate.”
“Lady Gaga was attempting to address this very thing in her song. How dare they play that song and cut out its shining heart,” said Pang, the co-founder of Sexuality Independence, a Malaysian anti-discrimination arts movement. “We just want the same thing as everyone else: to love, be loved and have our songs played on the radio.”
Lady Gaga, who is highly outspoken about gay rights, should consider protesting the decision by asking Malaysian stations not to air her songs at all, Pang said.
Gay Malaysians have tried to press for greater acceptance in recent years, saying discrimination persists.
The Sexuality Independence group last year posted a Youtube clip of a young gay Muslim who defended his sexuality, but it removed the video after anonymous viewers made online death threats against him. Government religious authorities accused the man of insulting Islam, though no official action was taken.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 12:45pmLove the MUSIC! I heard this a couple of weeks ago and could not get it out of my head! Love the “general” concept of ‘born this way”…could do a lot of good in the world…the “gay” issue? Not so much! But, when you think about it, even if her intent was not leaning in that direction…others would have taken it down the “gay” road anyway…God will judge…and, He will judge ALL of US when it’s said and done, right? My problem with “gay” or any other type of “preference” is that I wish they would just keep it to themselves…flaunting ANYTHING is what I like to call “stinkin‘ thinkin’”…

“Ghost, when someone doesn’t know the difference between immorality and decency, he would not understand the difference between freedom of speech and censorship.”
Whose morality? Whose sense of decency? Who gets to define it? If one can define it, cannot the torch pass to another, perhaps against *your* viewpoints, and suddenly you find yourself censored?
“There is a difference between pornography and free speech, and Malaysia demonstrated that it has values.”
Actually, by banning *any* type of expression, it immediately becomes political speech (since government action was invoked to silence it), which makes it a matter of freedom of speech.
Most here would be blowing gaskets and have steam shooting out of your ears if this were an article about some Muslim nation banning a singer from singing Christian lyrics. Most here would be in the same state of anger if it were an article about our government banning any kind of speech we liked.
I don’t enable tyrants. I despise, truly despise, this “Lady Gag-Me” person. But it always bothers me when freedom of speech is abridged. Trash must be allowed to show its face in public, so that the people can justly dismiss it and let it fade into history.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 2:28pmThat‘s Malaysia’s problem on the free speech issue…I am tired of the stupid argument. Though I disagree with Malaysia cutting content based solely on that—-again, this is Malaysia’s issue.
For the U.S., I am BEYOND tired of the victim class in this category. Based on the marriage issue and that issue ALONE, they claim they are being discriminated against in EVERY OTHER AREA is bogus. The ONLY so-called right that is being denied is marriage at this point. Because of this, this platform is used to stage events and shout down and berate other citizens and DEMAND they accept the gay lifestyle. Let’s take a step back—no one has to ACCEPT your lifestyle. They can even call you names in public if they wish. It would be tasteless and moronic, but it is ALLOWED. Again, over the marriage issue and the marriage issue ALONE, leaders in this category have rallied gays to engage in victim behavior in EVERY aspect of their life and have pushed people like public ho Gaga to rally for them in ridiculous ways. Again—-based on her song alone, she is advocating the DEMAND that you accept their lifestyle, not tolerate it.
And before the progressive nuts jump all over me, my best friend is a lesbian. She has done quite well in her life and does protest the inability to marry in her state, but other than that, she is successful in every area of her life and her sexuality is no more of a standout issue than my own relationship. She doesn’t define herself by her sexuality alone.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 2:30pmWhere are the comments defending freedom of speech and freedom of the press? Have all the freedom-loving posters forgotten these rights are not granted by the government but inherent in our nature? This includes Malaysians! The rights of listeners, the broadcasters, and Lady Gaga are all being violated. Instead of rallying against government censorship, I have seen little else besides gay/weirdo-bashing.
Oh, lest we forget, anti-gay marriage types are amongst the worse of progressives. A marriage is a contract between two people. Why do you want government intervention in these contracts? Many of the benefits of marriage relate to taxation (inheritance as well as tax-favored benefits like health care). If the progressive government were less intrusive, and our taxes were minimal as they should be, then there would be little-to-no economic or tax benefits to marriage (I realize some may pay more payroll taxes due to marriage, yet no estate tax or gift taxes). Anti-gay marriage types expose their pro-Nazi, pro-tax, big government progressive nature.
Progressives love to shape behavior with taxes. Why are so many of you on that side?

Would you defend kiddie porn under freedom of speech/expression laws? And so you can’t use the “it hurts a child” argument what if it was computer generated kiddie porn? They can post any scene or situation they want under freedom of speech? Believe me I am a staunch supporter of 1st amendment, but all our rights also come with responsibilities to the community. When those sometimes cross the line in such extreme ways (not this situation necessarily although I can’t stand lady gaga) then the community may have the right to curtail such irresponsibility. That is why the founders liked a stronger local government rather than a centralized one. The standard of obscenity in NY would be different than in KY I am sure, which is fine as long as it is the communities standards as determined by the local officials voted into office and the local courts do not find that these standards of decency do not violate freedom of speech unduly. It is a very sticky situation with all kinds of clashing rights and moralities. In the end each situation needs to be evaluated. I don‘t surely have all the answers but just wanted to provide a devil’s advocate position.

two locations at least:
Lev 21:9 And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.
If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel’s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: And the damsel’s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. Deuteronomy 22:13-21

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 5:32pm@Silentwatch,
THey can all be found in Leviticus. also prohibition against shaving and cutting one’s hair.
So are we to use this outdate book for morality, or realize that we have advanced in 6000 years.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 5:36pmI do not agree with those lines in that song in any way. BUT its not the governments place to shut down someone’s right to say it. There are limits of course such as extreme cursing, pornography, etc. But it is our INDIVIDUAL responsibility to live morally and those morals that do not intrude on another citizen’s rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are exclusively protected by our Constitution. We certainly can have discourse and debate about what is right and moral and from where or whom morality stems, but all freedom loving Americans who respect our Constitution should stand unified AGAINST governmental control of personal morality. Personal morality which is expressed quite often through speech.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 6:21pmOh my word ENCINOM..this is as about as kindergarten as logic and reason get, but when you want to disregard SHOWTIMES morality you are in fact imposing your own. You are holding your values up over hers. You are stating that the value of determining values as she would deem appropriate is not valid, by doing so you are stating your won morality over hers. Every law, EVERY law is the imposition of some form of “someone’s” morality on the rest of society. That is why there is such bitter division between right and left in this country. Don’t think for a second you stand on some higher moral ground than SHOWTIME, you don’t. That was a ridiculous and hypocritical statement. Pro-abortion is imposing one groups morality on others that would think it morally the same as murder. Same with gay marriage. Same with collective bargaining rights and so on and so on………………Be a man or woman and just say, “I think my morality is better than yours.” Otherwise, hide behind cowardice hypocritical statements in the area of community and let your statements fall on deaf ears.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 6:32pm@ OZ…….I hear what your sayin’. But I have a question for you. You listed pornography and extreme cursing as limits to 1st amendment. Then proceeded to say we need to limit government over 1st amendment. To play devil’s advocate for a sec. That sounds all good and stuff, but where and who decides the morality and limits in those 2 areas you listed? It must be established by standards of communities that elect officials to represent their views in office by setting standards of decency and obscenity with the courts playing the counterbalance to protect the 1st amendment. That is our system of government. Only problem is that too many ideologues have infiltrated the courts and perverted the intent of the 1st amendment to defend even the most obscene forms of pornography etc. Same with the right to bear arms. The courts have found that certain requirements and restrictions do not unduly limit this right. Just my 2 cents
